Burnedpaw's ear twitched. Maybe Hawkthorn should've eaten before they left after all. "You okay?" He asked, genuinely concerned. Are we even going the right way? He surely wouldn't know, having never seen the territory before, but he hoped Hawkthorn did.

Hawkthorn opened his mouth to say he was tired but stopped. Weakness, weakness, weakness. He repeated to himself. He nodded and meowed, "Yeah. I'm fine. Let's head to the border to see if you can scent the other clans."

Burnedpaw stared at Hawkthorn a moment, considering his response. But eventually he shrugged lightly. Who was he to question his mentor. Burnedpaw tried to set the pace to something of a brisk walk. Maybe this will help him wake up a little.

Hawkthorn cleared his throat once they had reached the edge of the border. "Alright. Let's see how well you can identify scents." He meowed and gestured around him. "Go on. Scent."

Burnedpaw stopped with his mentor, turning to him and then nodding. "Okay." He looked to where the territory shifted, but he wanted to be able to identify exactly where the border was by scent alone. Burnedpaw closed his dark amber eyes and opening his mouth to taste the air. Drink in the scents of the forest...then separate the scents of your clanmates. He patiently waited while he took in the different scents, and when he felt confident he took a pawstep forward.

He kept his eyes closed, pacing forward until he felt like he could tell there was a line where his clanmates's scent was firm. Like they kept coming back to this line. But it's a little faint... He opened his eyes and closed his mouth, turning to look over his shoulder. "Is it here?" He asked, flicking his tail to where he thought the border was, but he wasn't completely certain.

Hawkthorn sniffed and frowned. "How 'bout we do the border real fast?" He suggested and looked for a nearby tree.

The reddish brown tom nodded in agreement, padding over to another tree with a bundle of ferns around it a little ways down to make the border, glancing at Hawkthorn and copying what his mentor did. "Hawnthorn," he meowed, "which clan does this border?" He asked, his nose instinctively wrinkling now that he was even closer to the other clan's markers. "It smells...weird."

Hawkthorn put his scent on the tree and scented the air. He wrinkled his nose and muttered something. Then, realizing that his apprentice couldn't hear him, he spoke up. "Shadowclan." He meowed and shook his head.

"Smells like dirt." He muttered, slightly joking.
