The air was getting colder and colder every day as the season changed from Greenleaf to Leaf-fall. The once leafy green trees had turn duller each day Palepaw had passed through, in and out of camp. Though it had yet to changed to the rumoured red colour. Palepaw was jittery with anticipation, he couldn't wait to see the scenery being painted in reds and oranges. It would be like a permanent sunset...or at least permanent until the leaves fell.

He's been getting lessons recently, just introductions courses. But he cherishes every single one and looked forward to learning the next. But today, he was feeling a bit tired and his drowsiness had reminded him of the warm nursery where Nightshiver was. He should definitely give the nursery a visit. It'll be good to say hi once in a while.

He popped his head in, but the forever queen wasn't really in sight. Probably needed a breather once and a while. She's definitely doing a hefty ton of work with all the kits running around. Specifically him, when he was still a tad smaller. He made a mental note to greet her once she does appear once more. He was just making his way out before spotting a little white kitten in the corner of the nursery. Curiously, as his normal self, he padded up to the kitten and spoke in a soft tone filled with elation, "Hey there Icekit! I'm Palepaw, if you didn't know...that is"

"I'm actually just here to visit Nightshiver. But it looks like she's out for a moment! But thennn I was heading out and I saw you!" Palepaw kind of trailed off. Where was he taking this? He didn't really know. Perhaps it would've been better to talk straight to the point. "Whatcha doing here in the corner?"

Icekit, yet again hiding around in the corner of the Nursery, refusing any social interaction. Then, her worst fear. A happy looking... Kit? padded up to her. He seemed... Like a kit, but bigger than average. Maybe he was one of those bigger kits that she would sometimes see around camp, almost never in the Nursery. And this one was... Palepaw? Strange. Icekit tilted her head, blinking at Palepaw. At his question, she thought for a bit.
What was she doing here in the corner?
Avoiding everyone else, of course. And Palepaw absolutely fit the description for "everyone else".

Icekit shrugged, tapping her tail on the ground and swaying from side to side. She didn't want to talk to this big kit. She never wanted to talk to anyone. Should she make an exception with this soft-coloured cat?

All Palepaw could get was a shrug from this little kitten. Confused but still high spirited, Palepaw had chalked it up to social anxiety or maybe he was overwhelming the little kitten. With a few paw steps backwards, he talked in a softer tone. "It's okay if you don't want to talk. You could...um...answer yes and no questions! Nod means yes, and shaking your head means no."

That should be easy enough. So first question. Hmm... what should Palepaw ask. A yes and no question. About her, what she liked, or if what she'd done around camp. No no no, that would be too overwhelming again. He doesn't even know if she wanted to talk to him.

So here goes his first question. "Okay first question, are you okay with me being here? Could I talk to you?"

Oops. That was two questions.

So, Palepaw still wanted to talk, apparently. But didn't prompt her to talk back. Interesting. Something a lot of kits didn't do. Maybe Icekit would decide to like Palepaw, after all. He wasn't as scary as that other kit who kept snapping at her.

Then, came the first question. Or rather, questions. Icekit didn't mind. They were easy to answer. She thought for a bit. Was she okay with Palepaw being here? Sure, Palepaw seemed nice, but did she ever want to talk with other cats? The answer was no. And so, the answer to both Palepaw's questions should be no, right?

...

Icekit gave Palepaw a slow and hesitant nod, shifting her position so she lay on the nest, paws tucked neatly under her belly.

Was that a nod he sees? A slow one, but that was indeed a nod. Palepaw excitedly settled himself down and made himself at home. Afterall it hasn't been a full month since he'd become an apprentice and he'd very well had fit right in with the kits, especially with his small body structure.

The pale calico kitten gave Icekit a tiny smile before wondering about what if could talk about. Maybe they could start by talking about themselves? Like introductions! The best way to introduce yourself was to say something you like and dislike!

"Well, now you know. I'm Palepaw. I'm a recent apprentice! I've been working really really hard to learn as much as I can, so I can become a warrior!" he continued with his soft voice that carried like the wind. A whirlwind, at times. "I like climbing, watching ants...um...talking to others, making friends, and ummm..."

He really couldn't think of much on the top of his head, but that's okay because this was Icekit's turn. So here he went, a random start question, "Hmm... do you like ants?"

Icekit watched as Palepaw settled, and was almost instantly overwhelmed with information. Information about Palepaw. Apparently, he was an apprentice. She'd never heard of anything called apprentices. Apprentices... They learn things to become warriors? How come nobody had told her about any of this?
But then again, nobody was willing to talk to her about anything.
Except Palepaw.

Icekit smiled, happy to know someone had finally decided to speak to her despite her silence. Happy to know someone wanted to talk to her.

The white-furred kit's ears perked up again at Palepaw's next question. Ants? What were ants? There was just so many things Icekit didn't know. There were a few things she did know. She knew the flying things with pretty wings that she could often see outside the Nursery, she knew of the other cats, the leader, and a few other kits that she didn't bother talking to.
She loved the flying things with pretty wings. It calmed her.

Icekit turned her attention back to Palepaw and only shrugged. She didn't know what ants were. So she wouldn't know if she'd like them or not. Hmm, Palepaw had said he liked watching ants, hadn't he? Maybe they were like the things with pretty wings?

Palepaw's head turned sideways at Icekit's confusion. 'Does she not know what ants are? That's weird...I'm sure there are a lot around.' Hmmmmm....Palepaw took this chance to think of a good way to explain it.

"They are like insects!" Palepaw exclaimed. 'Oh wait, that makes it harder.' "Ants are little creatures that crawl on the ground and usually in groups! Small. Sometimes black, sometimes brown...and other times they could be red or green!"

"And insects or we could call them bugs. These include butterflies, beetles, moths, bees, caterpillar and ummm... spiders!" The pale calico kitten explained. "Maybe I should bring you one, one day! Would you like to see one?"

Insects? Bugs? They sounded intimidating. But if someone like Palepaw liked them, maybe they weren't so bad. Butterflies? Moths? The names of these so called "bugs" intrigued Icekit. Maybe she'd like to see these so called "ants" that Palepaw liked watching. They sound interesting. Tiny creatures that move around in groups? Sounds like a useful way to pass some time.

Icekit nodded, wanting to see these "ants" one day. Maybe they were as interesting as the flying things with pretty wings.

"Alright! I'll definitely bring you some one day!" The pale calico kitten chirped brightly. He made a mental note to himself to bring them in next time, and maybe he could even find an assortment of bug to show. They were sort of interesting in his opinion. Weird, small, but oddly interesting. They were so small but seemed to be almost everywhere.

"Thennn...next question! Favourite food! Do you like mice?"

"Or maybe...birds?" Palepaw wondered. Bird's feathers are so tough to navigate. To him, they are almost too pretty to eat. So he quiet down about it. Suddenly at the corner of his vision he see something flying about. A pretty little butterfly with thin fragile wing that just flew pass the nursery. Palepaw whipped his head around, excited to tell Icekit. "Did you see that! That was a butterfly!"

Icekit tilted her head to the side at the mention of mice. She's had some before, they were able to fill her stomach, but it wasn't great. And-

Icekit's eyes dilated suddenly, looking off to the distance as Palepaw began talking more. She hadn't heard what he had said, too distracted by something that captured her attention. There it was! The flying thing with pretty wings! Her gaze followed the creature, until it seemed Palepaw had noticed it, as well.

Butterfly? Was that what they were called?
Butterflies.
It sounded very pleasant and fitting for such a fragile and beautiful creature.

For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Icekit smiled.
