Maplekit looked around the camp. Boredboredboredboredboredboredboredboredboredbored boredboredbored. She was so bored!!!! She tried everything. Chasing butterflies [couldn't find any] making new friends [no way!] Then, she spotted it. Maggotpaw! She should congratulate it! She padded over to Fallenkit. "Heya! Wanna go see maggotpaw?" Maplekit mewed. She walked over to maggotpaw. "Hey maggotk-paw!" She squealed. "I heard you're an apprentice now! So lucky!" The impatient kit had one more moon till she was 6 moons. "Have you started training? What have you learned? Who's your mentor?" She asked.

After six moons of stomping around half-washed and scraggly without a care in the world, Maggotpaw has recently found itself worrying about its coat. Did it look nicer, licked down flat and free of dust? Was it...better, in any way? This is an irritating thing to wonder about. Since when has Maggotpaw ever cared about appearances? Hadn't it once mocked Fallenkit's worries over prettiness? This isn't the same, it tells itself bitterly, scrubbing a damp paw over its face. It must be an apprentice thing. After all, Maggotkit said and did all those things, and Maggotkit is now dead. It's stupid Maggotpaw that cares so much about baths!

What a pain. It's about to roll on the ground just to spite itself but—huh?? Oh. Friends.

"Yes, I'm an apprentice. No, I'm not lucky, I'm just older than you. Yes. Places. Whisperinghive..." It answers every rapidfire question in a gritted monotone save for its mentor's name, which gets its own special angry-voice. Maggotpaw does not like Whisperinghive. It's no fault of his, really; they're a difficult pinning their frustration on the most convenient target. Oh, but to Maggotpaw, "He is the worst. Did you know he's not even a cat? He's a real life hive of bees. Every day I get stung all over. See??" They hold out their paw, which is fine. Maggotpaw's never been stung by a bee in their life.

"Oh, and, I don't want to scare you guys*, but you better watch out. I just heard they're gonna assign you both to mentors that eat little cats." They add with a theatric sigh.

*(yes they do.)

Fallenkit's eyes widened as she listened. I don't wanna be an apprentice! She wailed, jumping to her paws. She paced around, trying to find her mother. Of course, she wasn't there.

A real hive of bees? She looked at maggotpaws paw. She thought it did look weird. "Wait, what??" i heard they're gonna assign you to mentors that eat little cats "Really? I never wanna be an apprentice!" @Crown_Sage @nyme (sorry, didn't have much motivation)

Maggotpaw has to fight back a look of delight to hear the pair of kits suddenly horrified by the idea of becoming apprentices. Good. That's the way it should be. They nod gravely, examining their '''stung''' paw for a moment before tucking their tail over it. "Yeah, well. You gotta do it. They're gonna make you, even if you say no. I mean...I guess you could try hiding, but then your mentors would be extra hungry. They'd find you eventually and you wouldn't stand a chance."

Maggotpaw shakes its head all somber before they light up comically with a plan that they'd been sitting on for a while, now. It bats their eyelashes at Maplekit and Fallenkit, playing innocent: "Oh! But you know what, I just remembered, Whisperinghive showed me one good thing. He showed me how to keep bad cat-eater mentors busy so that they forget all about eating little cats. You know, I bet I could help you guys not get gobbled up...but I can't do it with nothing. I think I'll need...five really pretty feathers every moon for it to work. From both of you. Really pretty, so not that ratty stuff you find in the freshkill. Hawk feathers maybe...or crow feathers, or raven ones. If you guys can make sure you give me five really good feathers—each!—every single moon after you become apprentices, then I promise I will keep your mentors from killing and eating you." Maggotpaw musters up every ounce of earnestness it can as it lays the plan out for the two.

"But if you can't do that, then...well, I saw some really pretty places in the Starry Meadow. Hopefully there's still bits of you guys left to bury after your mentors get you."

Fallenkit stood, frozen in terror. Okay! She agreed, shaking out her pelt. She would be an apprentice soon, so she'd better stay mostly clear of her mentor. She tried changing the topic. What's the apprentice's den like? She stared at Maggotpaw with her wide, cute hetreochromic blue and green eyes. Y'know, we'll be sharing a den soon!

"The apprentices' den is.........." Maggotpaw frowns, thoughtful. It's not really sure. It only goes there to sleep. "It smells different. There aren't any queens and there's less mossball. You get your own nest." They've taken to the change easily. No longer sharing with Whiterabbit means Maggotpaw gets cold from time to time, but it doesn't miss its mother's company beyond that. "Nobody's there to shush you or tell you to be good, so I think it's better." Maggotpaw decides.

The thought of training together with Fallenkit and Maplekit has it tipping its head, faintly intrigued. Maggotpaw's only toured the territory at this point, but that had been fun enough. Maybe...maybe doing other training would be nice. And maybe it would be nicer if it had friends to practice with.

"Why are you guys excited?" It asks through a frown.

Fallenkit purred. Why wouldn't it be? She rumbled, her ear flicking. We get to explore, and fight, and...and... She struggled for more information, but couldn't find the words. Fallenkit turned her gaze to Maplekit for help.
