ShadowClan Firepaw's battle training!

Firepaw

(She/her)

Firepaw trotted along the clearing, a cheerfull energy to her steps, her amber eyes flying over every single cat that came into view, looking for a specific tom. It turns out that, at least judjing by what she had found out a few hours ago, you dont actually need to wait around to be asigned a mentor to start training! Apparently Dawnstar encouraged the apprentices to take inniciative over their own training and look for cats to teach them, and she planned to do just that while the mentor spot was empty for her. After all, Dawnstar herself was very clear when she had allowed her into the clan, if she doesnt pull her weight, she would be kicked out, and Firepaw wasnt willing to wait until the next clan meeting happened to start making herself usefull to the clan, so she asked around camp for any cats that could be up for giving her a class, and a certain "Rookfire" popped up a lot in the lists of posible teachers cats gave her.

By what she had heard, he was a Shadowclan enforcer, a rank above warrior that Dawnstar asigned to certain cats, a warrior had explained to her, and he also seemed like an experienced mentor, which basically made him the perfect fit for what Firepaw was looking for! And looking for him Firepaw was, searching through the camp looking for a tom that matched the description cats gave her (black cat with some white stripes on his tail), trying to keep the excitement in her face from being too obvious. She was about to meet one of Shadowclan's elites! One chosen by Dawnstar no less! And she was about to recieve training from him! ...Hopefully, anyway. She already had in mind exactlywhat she wanted to learn: battle training! She had thought that, considering what her skills were right now, battle training would be more usefull to her. She already knew how to hunt by way of teaching herself while she made the trip to Shadowclan, but she didnt have much to show in terms of battle prowess. Before she came to Shadowclan she mostly avoided predators instead of facing them off, and she hadnt had any hostile loner encounters, mostly becouse she always was very carefull to not get on their territory to begin with. So some fighting lessons would be ideal to round up her skills. And which you look at that, fighting was one of Rookfire's specialities!

After a little while, Firepaw finally spotted the cat she was looking for from across the clearing. The older apprentice let out a little mew of excitement and bounded towards the enforcer. As soon as she came into his view though, she made sure to calm herself down and seem a bit more profesional, sitting down in front of him with her tail neatly tucked in front of her paws before speaking, though a gleam of enthusiasm still could be seen from her eyes.

"Hi! Im Firepaw, a pleasure to meet you! You are Rookfire, right?"

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan enforcer | purrks ]
one of his apprentices had appeared a bit absent, too bad really, his very own little plan had been to collect himself a good resume as a mentor, assist the most ridiculous amount of young cats to reach their potential and earn their warrior names. may it be for getting on dawnstars good side, the ever present feeling that he needed to perform above and beyond to earn and maintain his keep, wanting to impress mossfreckle (for whatever reason he had gotten so focussed on getting on the herbalists good side) or just his competitive spirit pushing him to be better than everyone else. whatever it was, rookfire knew he wanted to get cinderpaw and echopaw to earn their names as quickly as possible, turn them into fine warriors, so he could take on another pair to repeat the process alongside teaching groups. now, with echopaw being a bit...distant..rookfire was in a bit of a questionable situation, he could hardly just got ask to get a new apprentice because he definitely was not backing out of this or afraid to take on a more 'complicated' or less willing apprentice. it was..complicated..yeah that was probably the easiest way to put it into words.
right now however, rookfire was laying on his side in a sunny spot near the medicine den, close enough to theoretically smell its heavy herby scent yet more or less unable to do so, it wasnt much of a surprise, after nights spent sleepy close to the very source of this particular smell his pelt had once again taken on notes of lavender, rosemary and whatever else mixed into the overall smell. it was both comforting and had been a bit stressful at the beginning, mostly because it brought back memories and feelings he thought had been long burried and had not been unearthed by being around the medicine den alone. 'brows' furrowed slightly, rookfire chewed that memory once again, the bitter taste coating his tongue no doubt caused by a particular set of cats, cobwebpaw and mistyshard in particular, though, he hardly thought mistyshard deserved to be called by her "warrior name" at all. in all honestly, he preferred thinking about his...odd..conversation with mossfreckle over a moon ago, even though that had been possibly the most embarrassed and humiliated he had ever felt, which should pretty much clarify how much anger at riverclan and mistypaw, fadingsun, everyone who wronged him, still burned inside of him. one battle wasnt enough, that one apprentices death wasnt enough, would anything ever be enough until he stood, covered in blood and panting in bliss above the limp body of the one who had taken his dignity and called himself a leader whilst acting like a kit. attacking a apprentice half his age and LOSING. running with his tail tucked and fear shining in his eyes. he was an embarassment. embarassing and disgusting filth like the rest of riverclan (save for marigoldkit, bless her heart).
firepaws movement in the corner of his working eye went unrecognised, rookfires head filing at as simply another clanmate passing by, until the apprentice was right in front of his, finally snapping him out of his thoughts, striped tail that had been tapping the group rhythmically stilling and frown filtering out of his face. out of necessity, he hated laying down whilst talking to people, rookfire sat up, now towering over the younger feline and carefully wrapping his tail around white tipped paws kneading the group momentarily.
"sure am." the enforcer replied, searching his mind for a memory of this cat, anything, their name being mentioned, him seeing them around, and came up blank, assuming they were an outsider that had recently joined, rookfire cursed the wild for being turned the other way, blowing the mollies scent away from him rather than towards him and leaving his questions about their heritage specifically unanswered for now.
"how can i help you, firepaw?"

Firepaw looked up slightly to meet Firerooks gaze. They were almost the same height, Firepaw being a little taller than average for her age almost made her warrior siced, but aside from that the diference between the enforcer and the apprentice was truly like night and day. While Crookfire may be lean, his body was a lot more built than Firepaws, packed with rigorously trained musle and overall much more better shaped than the apprentice's, that, while tall, was more bones and fluff than meat. Firepaw looked down to her body once she made the comparison, her scrawniness becoming much more obvious to her now. That was the diference of almost an entire lifetime of training made, she thought. She would really need to hurry if she wanted to be at a decent both physical and skill level before she became warrior aged, event that was already closer than she would've liked, if she didnt want to fall behind her peers already.

She shook her head to clear her mind, this wasnt time to make fuss about that, if she had sought out Rookfire in the first place, it was presicely to fix that issue. And either way, that comparison only brought to the spotlight how perfect Rookfire was for what she was looking for: strong, skilled, trusted by Dawnstar... He was as perfect as a cat could get to teach another, at least to her knowledge, and she was going to make the most of it while she had the chance. Firepaw sat up straigther and tried to catch the smell of the enforcer in case she needed to recognice it later (the wind was blowing in her direction, it should be easy enough, she thought), but came out of her efford empty-pawed when she realiced that the enforcer's natural smell had been almost completely overtaken by the aromas of various flowers and herbs, so much so that a blind cat might confuse him for a flower garden if they were to smell him. She didnt think much of it, assuming he provably just had an injury recently and his pelt absorved some of the scents of the medicine den, but she still found it a little funny that the respected Shadowclan enforcer smelled so fiercely of flowers.

"Well, I havent been asigned a mentor yet, so I figured that, while Dawnstar is sorting that out, I might look for some training by myself!" She responded, shifting in place a bit to mimic the enforcers posture better "I've heard you are open to giving classes to apprentices, so I was wondering if you could help me out with my training a bit! I was thinking maybe about some battle practice, since I think im a bit lacking in that area... If you can, of course, you arent busy right now, right?"

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan enforcer | purrks ]
rookfire observed firepaws gaze tracking from his body to her own and made note of what he percieved as openly displayed insecurity, or at the very least, comparison. which, on a base level, rookfire could understand, his father had been large and muscular yet kind spirited and rook looking like half a cat with shaggy fur for most of his life had been a bit discouraging. shadowclan had treated him well in that regard, and he was sure so would it firepaw, if the apprentice was willing to put in the work.
he didnt say anything just yet, being not overly comfortable or keen on sharing his past with just about anyone, well, at least not the part that came before riverclan. there wasnt really a way to hide his riverclan heritage to the vast majority of the clan since he had only joined a couple of moons ago and he had long since given up on trying.

rookfire hummed, nodding slightly, perhaps he had underestimated firepaw. "very well." he commented, keeping his expression neutral despite the overall liking he tended to take to willing and hardworking apprentices, they would still have to proof they didnt just have a big mouth or ambitions bigger than their actions.
"you've heard right, i'd be happy to help" the warrior unwrapped his spiky striped tail from his paws, shifting from sitting to walking towards the camp entrance in one swift motion.
"has anyone explained stuff to you yet? some rules maybe hm?" the enforcer enquired, head turned to look at the apprentice whilst white tipped paws carried him seemingly aimlessly into the dense evergreen forest surrounding shadowclan camp.
"the most important thing ya gotta know is that you're not allowed to leave camp alone 'til youre a warrior. to become a warrior you gotta train at the very least battle, huntin' n stealth and then ask a enforcer, mistlewhisker or dawnstar to assess you. that just means they test if youre ready to be a warrior" he explained, genuinely trying to not fall victim to the ramble-y way he tended to explain things he really enjoyed speaking about in. "that can be replaced by a battle though, was like that for me" rookfire added after a quick pause.
"errr otherwise..you just gotta be present, attend meetings n that stuff. do patrols et cetera. 's not that hard, really" with a shrug, rookfire came a halt in the middle of a sun speckled clearing. whilst the dark pines overhead filtered out a lot of the sun burning down on the forest, the thick foliage provided both a shield from the direct heat and allowed enough light to pass through to make it pleasant. "do you know anything yet or do we start from zero?"

The older apprentice smiled and gave Rookfire a little nod. "Great! thanks a lot" Firepaw quickly stood up and made her way beside the enforcer, her step quick and tail held high."And no, no one has really explained me anything yet, though I know a couple of things, from some rumors and all" She continued. The "rumors" she was talking about were just stories her mother told her and her littermates when they were kittens, but she didnt feel the need to clarify that. It would sound very silly to say that basically all her knowledge from clanlife came from kit stories (which it did) to a full blown warrior, so for now she just kept it at rumors. "I know some rules, like, be loyal to your clan, follow the leaders word unless it contradicts the warrior code, dont kill cats if you dont need to... Though I'm provably missing a lot, so let me know if im doing something wrong!" As they walked around the camp, the older apprentice's gaze shifted from one side of the camp to another, inspecting and memoricing every cat they came across. There were so many! She heavely doubted that she would ever get to meet all of them. If just one clan could hold so many cats, she couldnt imagine how many there would be in the gatherings the clans held every once in a while, the mere thought made her head spin.

Firepaw continued walking along rookfire, listening and nodding along to his explanation. It was more or less what she expected, she would have to train in some basic skills (Obviously), she wasnt allowed to leave camp without a warrior until she earned her full name (She wasnt really pretending to get lost on Shadowclan territory anyway, so that was fine too), she would have to attend to gatherings and clan meetings (Oooh, meetings!), and she would have to get assesed by either an enforcer, Mistlewhisker, or... Dawnstar... She 'd met Dawnstar before, when she somehow managed to convince the ferocious she-cat to let her in her clan, and though she admired her for her strenght and skill, the thought of putting her her future as a warrior (or lack there of) in her paws made the apprentice's fur bristle a little. Though, in the other harnd, asking her to asses her would be the perfect way of showing the leader how much she had improoved since she accepted her and that she would be a worthy member of the clan...Oh well, she would have time to figure that out later, now it was time for battle training. The pair had already made their way to a shadowy clearing, just enough light peeking through the leaves to be able to see clearly, and the trees also provided some very much needed protection from the scorching Green-leaf heat, so Firepaw made a mental note on this place in case she ever needed a place to cool off.

Rookfire's next question snapped her out of her thoughts. What was her skill level? That was a wonderful question. She didnt know much, that was why she aproached Rook about battle training to begin with, only a couple of basic moves, but she didnt know if by warrior standards knowing those would be considered akin to knowing nothing. "I think reviewing the basics would be a good idea, I dont really have a strong fundation and building one up would be nice before getting to anything more comlicated."

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan enforcer | purrks ]
alright, rookfire hadnt expected more knowledge, or maybe a bit more honesty because with how scrawny that apprentice looked 'dont really have a strong foundation' sounded like a halftruth at best, but who was he to judge. an enforcer actually. pretty sure he was actually allowed and encouraged to judge apprentices like that in his current position. whatever it was, he guessed the apprentice wasnt from shadowclan or else they wouldnt be this old and untrained which meant they couldnt really be from any clan (besides maybe riverclan, but they didnt have the telltale smell like fish and algae clinging to black and ginger fur) which meant her excessive (even for a clanborn apprentice) knowledge was kind of making rookfire antsy. dawnstar or mistlewhisker mustve seen something in her that was currently being overshadowed by the enforcers distrust.
"no need 'ta pretend ya know more than you do" petty, had rookfire ever not been petty? no, probably not. however, at least this very specific display of overall pettiness wasnt as obvious as it could be, said in a tone so neutral one could assume he was agreeing with her.

"the basics, front paw strike, cranial blow, duck n twist. that'll be the foundations for more or less every other technique n move, plus somethin more defence." the enforcer began, repeating the same three basic moves he had taught that other group some time ago. after shifting in his pose to let the joints in his forelegs click quietly in place, he stepped closer to the apprentice.
"for front paw strike n cranial blow ya need one of your front paws, doesnt matter which one. front paw strike, you do what the name says, strike with yer claws out. ideally youre goin for shoulders, chest n flank, anything higher than shoulder is gonna draw more blood n if you hit the face they might lose sight which can be good for fightin large predators but no idea if you've been intructed ta only fight not leave any lasting damage like that tho" rookfire explained, drawing his right forepaw, claws retracted, across firepaws shoulders as an example, whilst the prime example of not listening to 'no maimimg' instruction visibly crossed his left eye, leaving the eye a slightly more milky grey and a obvious scar amongst shorter fur. had he not been the one to treat it himself at a point in time far too late it mightve faded 'til now, but that wouldnt bring the sight aspect back so what did it even matter.

"cranial blow, similar thing, claws retracted. basically you smash yer paw down on your opponents head as hard as ya can." again, a white tipped paw gently tapped the top of the apprentices head, before moving to the side of it and repeating the motion. "top or side, doesn' matter, jus gotta put a lot of force into it n it'll hopefully distract em long enough for you ta' plan your next move". for this one, the real life practice he had was extremely limited, pretty much only repeating exactly what lostspark had told him instead of adding his own notes to it.

last move before rookfire would get to find out how to continue this. he was in no way an expert but c'mon even the youngest of warriors should know to not just forcer their own style choices onto any and all apprentices. "duck n twist is more like two moves than it is one. the first part is just ducking. someone is swinging for yer head? duck. now, its faster and safer to combine simple ducking with quickly rolling to the side n back to your paws 'specially if theyre comin at you for an angle."
