Heroneye watched as her apprentice attempted the move, head tilted slightly to the side. She appeared to be struggling a bit. It seemed that Heroneye had forgotten how different battle moves were from normal, everyday movements. The move was quite easy to her now, but that was only after several failed attempts of her own, naturally. In any case, she would have to find a way to help the apprentice. To that end, she watched her form carefully for any potential flaws.

"Softpaw, you seem to be leaning a bit too much to your left," Heroneye prompted, not unkindly. "Try to keep your body parallel to the ground at all times. It may make sense to put as much force as possible into your blow, but it's more important to keep your balance." If the apprentice stumbled like that in a real battle, any opponent would quickly take advantage. Any sign of weakness or distraction could easily spell one's end.

In a real battle, that is. This wasn't nearly so high-stakes, but Heroneye couldn't help but take this lesson just a bit too seriously in her mind. Perhaps that was only her nature.

Softpaw sighed gently, not at her mentors advice but at herself. Softpaw nodded, trying the move again but awkwardly balancing, "It feels weird to do." Softpaw admitted gently, her mew filled with concerns for the move as well as shy detemination. "So.... we...... or I..." Softpaw murmured, flicking her ears as she crouched, she attempted the move, this time facing her mentor, and as she did so she narrowed her pastel green hues to slit, as she attempted the move she leaned to the right a bit, swiping at her mentor and not trying to, but possibly smacking her mentors leg. If her blow hit, it wasn't exactly aimed properly but it was a strong, decent blow (as Softpaw's been working out regularly, mainly after her frustration with the swimming and being told she needs to be stronger) If the blow didn't hit, then Softpaw would swipe her paw over the plant, knocking off the top leaf and staring at it in shock as she would if she hit her mentor.

Heroneye watched patiently as the apprentice attempted the move once more. That was what this was a matter of: patience. Heroneye would watch the apprentice as many times as she needed to for her to get it right. Softpaw simply had to be willing to do the same. She'd get it eventually; that was a given. It was just a question of when. Though Heroneye understood better than just about anybody how frustrating that question could be, it was better than nothing, still.

So Heroneye watched and waited. She watched as the apprentice crouched, then sprang up. And then struck Heroneye right in the leg. She honestly hadn't been expecting it and stumbled a bit, which caused her to do something she didn't do often. She laughed once, the strange, sort of bark-like sound emerging from her maw in spite of herself. Well, she hadn't been expecting that, either. She blinked, a bit surprised at herself and her ugly-sounding laugh.

After a pause, a more serious expression returned to her face, and she meowed, "Well, that was a bit better than before. Though I don't believe you were aiming for my legs, it was a decently powerful move, at least." Heroneye's whiskers twitched as she turned to the apprentice.

"Try again."

Softpaw looked at her mentor with an open maw as she made her stumble. Softpaw gave a gentle laugh. Softpaw heard her mentors laugh and gave a soft purr. "Well, at least I hit something." Softpaw meowed, her tone filled with amusement. Softpaw nodded at her mentors next intruction, flicking her ears happily at the praise, Softpaw looked like she was awkawrdly trying to hold back laughter, in truth she was, who'd laugh out loud after everyone had stopped laughing? She'd look weird. Softpaw shook her bright white pelt and sniffed, Softpaw crouched, remembering to keep her weight even as she decided to straighten her tail behind her put them tilt it to the right a bit, helping her balance become better. Softpaw blinked and swiped again, her paw slapping the plant. Softpaw gave a triumphant purr, looking at her mentor calmly, her twitching whiskers giving away her pride at hitting it head on first try.

Softpaw sat up as her mentor spoke, looking and listening. The white apprentice noticed her mentors lingering amusement, Softpaw letting out a gentle mrrow. Opponent's face? What if there like.......waaay taller and you can't reach there face?" Softpaw asked. Softpaw asked, her tail flicking gently, "Be fast..... perhaps to be fast, when you hit them... you could like, crouch and switch over to the paw? Oh no.. then they'd leap on your back nevermind." Softpaw mewed

Heroneye listened to her apprentice's question with a flick of her tail. "If they were too tall, you'd likely have to use a different move. I'll show you one for that case after this." It was good that Softpaw was asking such questions. Being a skilled fighter was all about being adaptable, so thinking these sorts of things through was a must. Of course, the front paw blow wasn't a catch all move; there was no such thing.

"As for your other question," she continued, "That is a possibility, though like you said, it could also leave you vulnerable to certain attacks. It all depends on the situation, and you'll have to be able to decide whether or not it's worth the risk when the time comes. I'd say it would be better to try that tactic if your opponent seems distracted or stunned."

In any case, Heroneye braced herself. Whenever the apprentice was ready, she could once again try the move on her mentor. Hopefully she'd remember to keep her claws sheathed; Heroneye wasn't looking to come away from this with a scratched muzzle.

Softpaw nodded thoughtfully, listening to her mentors advice and answers to her questions, crouching for a moment she adjusted her paws a bit under her, despite her eyes gleaming in discomfort, she stayed in an even poition, not leaning on the wrong side. "Alright then.... well." Softpaw murmured, thinking about what her mentor had said. Softpaw shook out her white pelt, crouching and then narrowing her usually rounded, soft green hues. She studied her mentor swiftly, slithering over and swiping upwards, keeping her claws sheathed as she attempted to hit her mentors muzzle, if it landed, she'd try to make the hit a bit softer. "Oh wait, it's kinda like batting a kit away but more precisis." Softpaw mewed

Heroneye stood still, allowing the apprentice's paw to hit her muzzle while stifling a flinch. Some might say that she was going too easy on the apprentice, but Heroneye was fairly certain that this was the correct course of action. Probably. Well, Softpaw had only just gotten the move down without anyone dodging all over the place, so going out of her way to trip the apprentice up probably wouldn't be very helpful at this stage.

Heroneye's whiskers twitched at Softpaw's comment. Like batting away a kit, huh? Heroneye couldn't help but wonder what sorts of situations would call for such a skill.

In any case, Softpaw had made a fair bit of progress thus far, so Heroneye decided it would be best to switch gears then. "If you think you've got that down, we can move on to the next move. This one will be a bit more complicated."
