Gutspaw Tree Climbing

Recently, Hawkbite had gotten an influx of cats wanting to learn how to climb trees. Not a bad thing, he didn't mind, but he was starting to think a training event for this would be better. Gutspaw was next on his list to train, bite had expressed interest not too long ago.

"Gutspaw! If you wanna learn how to climb trees, meet me in the corner of the camp in a few minutes!" Hawkbite would holler into the Apprentices' Den before heading to one of the giant trees within the camp. He was glad the new camp had these here, honestly. It was nice shade, and he didn't have to leave the camp to train anyone. As he took a seat at the base, his gaze would look towards the Apprentices' Den before looking at the camp entrance. A quick glance to see if anyone was coming or going or being weird. After the event with Fishkit, he was much more cautious of the cats leaving lately.

Gutspaw shot up from its nest before it could even adjust from being partially asleep and awakens. It blinked wildly, interrupted by a sudden yawn. Ergh, imageless dreams still swirled around its head. Somethin' somethin', fish in the stars.. Mm, would the enforcer be frustrated if it grabbed a quick bite to eat? He had said a few minutes. Not right this instance. Though, truth of the matter Gutspaw was beyond ecstatic. The trees held so many secrets, and useful materials.

Right, right. The apprentice hopped to its paws, making a swift sprint to the fresh-kill pile. Hawkbite could be saved from a hangry Guts. It picked the smallest prey it could find which happened to be a shrew. Teeth wolfed it down in a few bites, perhaps a bit too fast before scurrying off to the corner of the camp.

"Yoyo!" It barked, approaching the tom with a large, raised tail that shook with excitement despite its casual expression. Gutspaw was not aware of this otherwise it would make an attempt to hide said tail.

Gutspaw made decent time for just waking up, Hawkbite even noted the quick bite to eat. Good, he'd need his strength for tree climbing. If he recalled correctly, Gutspaw was an older apprentice so unlike the smaller guys he'd been training, this one would have more muscle tone and would probably get up the tree easier. That was good. It was nice to have a break from the new apprentices here and there.

"First things first, when it comes to climbing trees, you need to make sure you pick a good tree, and you make sure it can support you. Too small of a tree and you'll fall. Too weak of bark, and you'll fall. The goal is to not fall, especially in situations where getting up a tree is the only way to escape whatever it might be that's chasing you."

Hawkbite turned to the tree and gestured to the different bark appearances. "The dry and cracked bark is weak and won't hold your weight for long, if at all. The darker, more stable looking bark is what you're aiming for. When you reach up and touch it, you'll see. Try with me," Hawkbite instructed, reaching a paw upwards and sinking his claws into the cracked, dry, bark. The wood almost instantly crumbled the moment he pulled down on it. Then, his claws hooked into the darker, healthier bark and the wood was stable enough that it didn't budge under his pull. "In moments where you can't physically tell what's healthy or not, just move fast. The dry bark can hold you up briefly, but you have to be fast and have your other paws on something more stable," Hawkbite spoke, waiting for Gutspaw to confirm it understood or had questions.
