Cricket couldn't suppress a furious growl. She stopped her licking of the wound only to turn on the corpse of the rat that attacked the kit, tearing into it with her teeth and angrily devouring it's flesh. What...kind of....filth...attacks....a....kit?!" She growled between bites and swallows. Satisfied the rat was thoroughly consumed - wrathful that she was, she was not wasteful - she washed her face of blood as best as she could before turning back to the kit.

Cricket was busily sniffing the wound and making sure it was clean when Notch approached again. He eyed the...decimated remains of the rat that had attacked the kit but decided it best not to ask. "The rest of the tunnel is clear." He reported. "I'll go look for moss or cobwebs for the wound." He mewed before turning, Cricket only acknowledging that she heard him with a dismissive wave of her thick tail.

* He mewed in pain as the wound was still bleeding. He looked up at Cricket and his eyes were filled with pain and fear. Not for just himself, but for all of them. He mewed something he didn't mean to. His kitten instincts overrid his manners. *

Cricket froze. It felt like ice went through her veins. M-...momma?! She wasn't entirely sure how to process being called that. Snap out of it! Now's not the time! She didn't address what the kit called her, instead focusing on keeping the wound clean.

In just a couple more heartbeats, an oblivious Notch came running into the tunnel with a bundle of cobwebs. "Here-!" He blinked, unable to finish his sentence before Cricket snatched the cobwebs and began applying them to the wound in silence.

* He stayed still and watched her. He looked over to Notch to see if he was okay. He was worried for them both. More so than himself. *

Where Cricket slowly turns from being the grumpy and always on her guard she-cat to a caring and strict mother for Cardinal. ))

Notch perked up his ears when the kit made an attempt at his name. “Yes little one?” He mewed, keeping his voice low and soothing. Cricket only snorted to herself as she kept trying to wrap and press the cobwebs onto the wound. He said my name first… She definitely wasn’t jealous.

[OOC: Yeah! That’s pretty much where I saw her character going. But idk if she’ll ever be super warm or doting in a typical way. More like Yellowfang from the books probably. Where she’ll have her moments. But yeah, she’s basically adopted Cardinal already. ]

Cricket sniffed the wound, satisfied that it had stopped bleeding. She finally felt like she could breath again, covering the kit's head and tiny body in frantic licks. She honestly didn't know what else to do with herself. Notch, again in his infinite wisdom, chose to say nothing about Cricket's behavior. But he shot her a quick, knowing glance before looking back at the kit.

"Yes, it is." Notched answered. "We should probably take a break here though." He glanced at Cricket, expecting her to protest but he was surprised (or maybe not) that she was silent. Notch looked back at the kit. "That was very dangerous, little one. Next time when Cricket tells you to stay put, please do so."

Notch's concern wasn't solely for their kit, they weren't healers. They didn't have the experience of trained healer. Notch knew some of the basics from living under Lizardwing's rule and the other tom's experience living in a clan. But he wouldn't know what to do if the kit developed an infection. He wasn't surprised this time when Cricket curled her body around the little kit protectively. I guess she's expressed her rage already. He figured. "Young kit," he meowed, looking at the kit, "do you remember your name now?" Since the kit had been speaking more, he figured it was worth a try.

* He looked up at Notch and was going to protest when He said that he should have stayed put, but he knew Cricket knew the truth. He whinned a bit when Cricket covered him in frantic licks. He looked back up at Notch and nodded. *

Cricket ignored the kit's cries, holding him to her tighter. Notch tilted his head, repeating the word in his mind as he tried to decipher what he said. Notch turned to Cricket, his gaze questioning, asking for help. "Cardinal." She mewed. She wasn't sure how she knew, but she could just understand the kit. So, his name is Cardinal. Cricket mused. Like the bird huh. Notch nodded in thanks to Cricket, turning back to Cardinal. "I see. So your name is Cardinal." Notch shifted to lay down with his paws tucked under his body, resting his head on the tunnel ground. "Let's rest here for a bit before continuing." He mewed drowzily.

Cricket nodded in agreement, loosening her tightness around Cardinal but keeping her tail curled around him protectively. "Do. Not. Leave. Not until I'm awake and we're ready to set out." She half meowed, half growled at the kit with narrowed eyes. She was serious, she didn't want Cardinal to get up even to make dirt without waking her first. She wasn't sure if she'd even be able to close her eyes to rest because it would require her to take her eyes off him for a moment.
