Cricket wasn't sure how to feel that the kit was enjoying himself. "Careful!" She hissed. "I don't want to drop you." She warned. The kit wasn't really twitching around, in fact he froze stiff. But she didn't want him to start squirming either. Although...I supposed it's not really a crime if he enjoys himself a little. She knew that he had come from a dangerous situation and was still in danger now. But he seemed totally clueless about it.

She looked up at Notch, who glanced back and nodded before picking up the pace. Cricket tried to keep the kit from swaying too much. Carrying him and being mindful of her pacing and where she was placing her paws was trickier than she anticipated. But finally, they reached their first obstacle: a Thunderpath. Cricket didn't dare set the kit down here, if he ran out onto the Thunderpath it would be a real pain. But she wrinkled her nose at the stench.

"Even if they do follow us," Notch mumbled, "they wouldn't dream of crossing here for a kit they didn't care about in the first place." Cricket snorted in agreement, she certainly wouldn't be doing this if she didn't have to.

* His tiny nose was wrinkled in disgust at the smell. He tried to mew. *
" D-dow? N-no g-gow a-anywere... I-I s-stay... "
* He was getting better at it slowly, but his mew was still raspy. *

Cricket glanced down at the kit and growled. She set him down and then put her face really close to his. "If you run off before we tell you to, I will eat you understand?" She hissed. Notch rolled his eyes at the display. "Just give it a rest, Cricket." He grumbled. "You're not fooling anyone." Cricket only shot Notch a glare in response. She didn't care if she scared the scrap, she wanted to keep him safe. And if that meant scaring him to her side, then so be it.

With that matter settled, at least in Cricket's mind, she purposefully set her thick tail in front of the kit's path as Notch carefully approached the Thunderpath. He gingerly set a paw on the path and immediately jumped back to where Cricket and the kit stood as a monster whizzed by. Kicking up grit and stench with it's large black paws.

* He mewed as he was pointing towards an opening that led under the Thunderpath. *

Cricket scowled when the kit showed no fear. Dammit...I'm losing my edge here! She was getting better at understanding the kit's attempts at speech, and followed his tail. "Hey, Notch." When Notch turned to look, Cricket flicked her tail in the direction of the tunnel. They shared a look and nodded in silent agreement.

Cricket scooped up the kit again. Daring him to protest with a glare and flattened ears. Notch went into the tunnel first, cautiously entering. Sniffing for any scent of an enemy, ears erect. Cricket followed in slowly behind him, willing the kit to keep quiet until they knew it was safe.

* He mewed quietly when Cricket picked him back up, but made sure to be really quiet when they entered the tunnel. He stayed still and hung limply in Cricket's jaws. He dared not move as he knew she would scold him later on. *

Cricket was glad the kit was so well behaved, Notch was grateful too. Cricket scented the thread before Notch did, and immediately slid out of the tunnel. She set the kit down hidden in the long grass outside. "Do. Not. Move." She growled, looking at the kit with a serious gaze. "I'll be right back." She felt compelled to touch noses to the kit but resisted, quickly scurrying back to Notch's side.

Notch stood fluffed up against their enemy: rats. Of course. He glanced back to see that Cricket had returned without the kit, standing guard in front of the entrance to the tunnel but still inside. Blocking the rats from escaping behind him.

He lashed out at the first rat, while two others scurried past to where Cricket stood waiting. She quickly snatched a rat up in her jaws and shook it, tossing it against the tunnel wall where it thudded to the ground dead. She yowled in pain when a rat bit leg, but quickly ripped him off, crunching down on the neck until she heard the snap of it's bone and dropped it.

Notch was fairing a little better, thankfully this didn't seem to be a primary nesting area so they weren't getting swarmed. He swiped at the two rats in front of him, relishing their squeals. "Damn right, filthy vermin." He growled. He stomped unsheathed claws down on one rat, lunging at the other and quickly ending the skirmish.

He saw Cricket and Notch fitting a bunch of small things scurrying around them. He yelped when something bit his hind leg where his old wound was and turned around to see a rat. He squealed and started to call for Cricket when the rat started to attack him. *

Cricket flinched when she heard her name, turning and instinctively lunging over to where the kit was calling out to her. Without thinking, she clamped her jaws on the rat's neck, pressing down hard. The rat let go of the kit to let out a screech before it's neck snapped. Cricket flung the rat into the tunnel wall. "Filth!" She spat. Then immediately turned her attention to the kit, licking at the wound furiously to try and clean it out.

"What were you thinking?! I told you to stay outside!" She hissed. Notch's attention was now drawn over to the commotion, but he wasn't as frantic. For starters, he knew that with Cricket being the way she was that he'd only get clawed to pieces if he tried to help. Instead, the gray tom decided to continue inspecting the tunnel for any additional threats.
