foxes round 2: FIGHT!

The hornet could already feel themself getting sore, huffing as the foxes were mopped up and helping the rest of patrol wrangle those remaining by grabbing limbs and playing distraction. It was tiring, and the tripod could feel their minor injuries from the fox stinging and aching as adrenaline faded with the calming of the fight.


Their throat hurt too, an itching ache that felt separate somehow.


Wolfhive wanted something though so Mudhound pushed it aside and focused, though why Wolfhive wanted opinions from the idiot was unknown. "Uuuuuhhhhhhhh... Well I dunno about vultures at all but I dont see why they wouldnt eat dead foxes? Dunno how you'd bait the vultures too the dead foxes and off of our land though. But for the traps Ive seen those be sprung by jamming a large stick into the snappy bit so if you shoved a fox leg in there it'd work the same I think."
Mudhound shrugged a bit, not knowing how many more traps there were and if they were snap traps like these ones or the nose traps they saw kill a hare once. Honestly why the tripod was being asked at all was beyond them, but Wolfhive had their opinion as he seemed to want now.

”Hey, nice moves, Wolfhive!” Raggedear panted as he clambered off the foxes still-warm body. He sniffed at the creature wearily, making sure it was in fact dead before nodding at the Hornet’s order and whipping around towards the fox den. He snarled as he approached the fox kits, their incessant high-pitched barks drilling into his ears. Killing young didn’t exactly sit well with him, but it’s not like they’d grow up to be on their side.

Shaking off a shrug, Raggedear launched himself at one of the fox kits.

 

It shrieked as his claws made contact with its shoulders, throwing it hard to the ground. Eyes glittered, the tom acted quickly so his resolve wouldn’t slip. Pinning the cub down, he locked his jaws around its throat, only letting go when he had a crack and the cub fall silent.

”There’s more than one in here!” He called out to Brackenclaw and Nightgaze, hoping they’d finish the other two as he backed out dragging his kill along with him.

The reason Wolfhive had looked to Mudhound was simple, at least to him: a former outsider and the senior citizen of the patrol, he figured if anyone knew about these traps - 'cause the current entourage didn't - it'd be them. Oh well. "Here's what we're gonna do. Mudhound, focus on disabling whatever traps you can find. Don't care if you use a stick or a fox leg. Once you're done - if you finish before us, dump the traps and corpses down Herondive's Ravine." A stick might be easier than hauling a fox around, though - but a fox could disable multiple at once theoretically. "Rising, go ahead 'n help Mud. Sproutfleck, you're with me. We'll figure out the vultures." [ @Rani, @Spider. ]

Willow's Rise wasn't too long of a trek from here, thankfully. Being near the old camp location had that benefit even if the landmark wasn't very practical. "Help me haul this to the outskirts, we're gonna tear it up there and leave a trail for the vultures to follow."

Wolfhive grabbed hold of one of the foxes and began to drag it; if Sproutfleck helped him, this would go significantly faster and they'd make it to the outskirts in question. Once there, Wolfhive committed war crimes on the body for the sake of bait. "Grab some, let's set the vultures up." They didn't need to kill them, just get them Out. So Wolfhive worked on setting up the trail until they were at Willow's Rise, and the vultures were in sight.

He threw out a piece of meat and watched them descend upon it in a flurry of wings. They caught sight of the trail laid and began to follow it in a shuffle, snatching the pieces of fox up in the process. "We'll follow... make sure they leave and find the fox."

He'd do just that, trailing behind the hungry birds until they were off Clan territory and they were feasting upon the dead fox. Great, stay there. Wolfhive would go on to head back to where he'd left Mudhound, wanting this to be over with. He was wholeheartedly done with predators this moon.

Uuuuuuuuugh ok fiiiiiiiiine. Mudhound was just feeling rotten at the point, the calm drawing their attention to this horrible aching in their muscles (must be from the exertion of the battle, because otherwise why would everything hurt?) and how hot they felt right now (summer sun and exertion right? RIGHT?) but they were gonna do their duty anyways. Nodding tiredly, more tiredly then the situation deserved, a smaller was nabbed from the pile of bodies, Mudhound lingering long enough to give their old 'friend' fox a look before departing, Risingstorm hopefully following.


"Ok so Ive seen a few of these traps before but be careful cus I dunno how to open them though I know its possible. These traps snap shut on the leg of anything bigger then a rabbit and can even catch like coyotes but thankfully these arent the bigger kinds that can snap off a cats entire head if you stick yours into it. I dunno why twolegs make those ones that big.


Finding the traps is most of the issue but you and Sproutfleck already did that so just take a big long stick or a foxes leg and jam it right into the open part of the trap and it'll snap shut. Just keep paws clear."
Was the world spinning? Why was Mudhound feeling woozy no no- they were fine. They werent woozy or dizzy or achy or too hot or tired they were fine. Lets just wrap this up and go home and after the tripod had their wounds healed they'd be fine!


"Lets get this done."
After that they'd work in tandem with Risingstorm to snap the traps shut mopping up the final issue, making a short trip to dump the used and now battered fox body (though snagged some teeth and claws as gifts) at herondive, arriving back right as Wolfhive did.


"Ok we're done now right Woofie? Theres no more predators to deal with, we're free and I can take a nap?"

Brackenclaw would help Raggedear take out the pups as well. As much as the large Maine Coon hated this idea he knew it was for the best. @TanghuluCat @Morrigan @BEAR.

In a matter of moments the battle was over. Freshmeat took the liberty of changing back his name to Sproutfleck and limped over to Wolfhive, listening intently to his words. Pups were going to be killed. Mudhound was on traps with Risingstorm, so that left Freshm- The Bronze Knight with Wolfhive. ”Sounds good.” he replied with a quick nod to accompany his words. The patterned Tom stopped his head down to grasp one of the foxes between his jaws, the fresh blood still oozing from its wounds. When he bit into it blood still came. He ignored it determinedly and gave Wolfhive a bobtail flick to show he was ready as his jaws were full of fox. As they made the trek, the tomcat found his thoughts wandering briefly. Just to the simple things, like his apprentice and how life was treating his son Pinepaw and Shockhoney.

Good hopefully but he hadn’t spoken much to either of them lately. He ought to do that soon. It didn’t take long for his thoughts to retrace to the intense pain from the wound on his hind leg, where the longest canine teeth were lie two more pained puncture wounds. It would scar, probably. Three? Three scars now? Yeah, that sounded right. Sproutfleck watched Wolfhive beside him briefly. He didn’t seem too hurt. In what felt like ages they reached the outskirts and Sproutfleck dropped the body. In compliance to the head hornets war crimes he wasn’t sure if he should.. beat up his fox, but then the tricolor (more than tri? Quad color? He wasn’t sure) spoke once more. “Sounds good. Let’s get this mess over with.” He puffed, “I’m about tired of all these predators and threats in the territory. No, not about tired. very tired.” Sproutfleck corrected himself with a snort, clicking his tongue at himself.

He then bowed down to grasp some of the… innerd turned outterd in his maw. Carrying it to Willow’s rise. Ew, there they were. Vultures always disgusted him. Vile, nasty critters. Just as he was about to mention following them just to be certain Wolfhive spoke those exact words. “Took the words right outta my mouth.” Sproutfleck agreed. The Bronze Knight briskly, despite his limp, followed the disgusting death eaters (as he liked to call them) all the way to the outskirts. “Mission accomplished.” He growled in contempt approval. Work was done, predators taken care of. And then they were walking, walking, walking back to Mudhound. Whabam, problem solved. Uh,, Go team!
