Default Will you kill for me?

@Mica [meant to get this up sooner. I also totally agree with Mistle being Dawn's executioner, it fits her.]

The daylight had dwindled to a barely perceptible lightening of the gloom. The warren empties and the rabbits are out to forage and play. They move slowly, lolloping in their ungainly way, grazing as they go. At the slightest noise, they're up on their hind legs, black eyes staring in multiple directions. Without warning a young rabbit darts from the bushes, its white undertail bobbing furiously as it kicks the springy ground. The rest of his earthen coat just blends into the gloom, he runs right into the claws of a scarred, brown tabby she-cat.

Unfortunately, she didn't hear or see what he had been running from until it was too late. The darkness was no barrier for the long-eared owl. In the inkiness she swooped, her talons sinking deeply into still-living flesh, ripping a cry from Dawnstar.

The ShadowClan leader, caged and tense, left the camp not long after dusk fell. She felt a little more at ease now that she had a full rank of cats, still, there was always something with ShadowClan. A new problem or new headache for her to deal with. Hence why she sought some time alone, a night hunting was a good distraction. She had gotten luck finding a small group of rabbits grazing, even more so when one rabbit ran straight into her claws.

It was rare for her to meet them out here, let alone one that was hunting the same thing she was. So, she hadn't been expecting it in the slightest. The owl swooped down, probably going after the rabbit that had been hunting but sank her talons into the ShadowClan leader instead. Owl talons were huge, sharp, and hurt immensely. The bird had its claws stuck in the Clan leader's chest, Dawnstar fell flat on her back after colliding with the bird.

Her fangs were buried in one of its massive wings, and her hindlegs furiously churned at the bird's chest, sending feathers flying all over the place. "Get off!" She spat, wincing as she felt the talons dig into her chest a bit deeper. The owl barked and screeched, no happier than Dawnstar was about the situation. A well-aimed kick and a painful twist freed the she-cat. She immediately leaped out of range of the owl's talons, and wings. She could feel warm blood dripping from her wound, but she couldn't take her eye off the owl.

Mistlewhisker
ShadowClan Deputy
she/her | 41 moons
[Large black cat with a half white muzzle and a pale green eye]
Purrks: Beefed Up T3, Shadow Fiend

· · ────────────── · ·
[Dawnstar - @Undertaker ]
· · ────────────── · ·
The endless work required of the high ranks of a clan was something that would drive lesser cats to madness. Had, if RiverClan’s decent into ruin and subsequent destruction was any indication. But not Mistlewhisker. She had been deputy for one moon and the clan had encountered a cannibal problem, been forced out of their camp, and entered a 3v1 battle against RiverClan. But she thrived when busy. Now that things had calmed down, she could focus on keeping the clan running as smoothly as possible. However… Assigning patrols was impossible until the clan was settled, and hunting a cannibal was more difficult than one might expect especially after a move. Organizing the construction of camp was work enough, but Mistlewhisker still felt as though more could be done.

So she found herself out alone in the territory, hitting two birds with one stone in regards to the cannibal and any missing clan mates. Mistlewhisker knew she could take on a cannibal. The third largest cat in the clan, as well as a cat who had been extensively trained, she has no doubts that whoever the cat in ShadowClan was that was eating others would be no match for her. But maybe they didn’t know that. If she could lure the cannibal out into attacking her, then she could get a positive ID on them, or even take them down.

At the same time, Mistlewhisker was out here looking for lost clan mates. After the fiasco with Bleedingpaw and Moonpaw, she wasn’t about to let another young cat go missing if she could help it.

So the deputy slipped through the shadows cast by the pale moonlight, the chilled moisture in the air sticking to her fur and washing away the oppressive heat of Greenleaf. Her paws tread lightly, despite her size. She was a wraith in the darkness. Being out at night served the black feline well. Impossible to see in shadows, she was free to move however she liked without the pressure of watchful eyes on her. Though many predators of the night had vision suited for picking out subtle movements.

The call of an owl was nothing new, and Mistlewhisker was content to ignore it until she heard a powerful screech split the air. The feline paused, ears swiveling towards the sound and eye straining to see further into the bracken she skirted. That hadn’t been the screech of an owl.

Mistlewhisker slunk towards where the sound had come from, ears perked and tail streamlined behind her. It wasn’t until she could hear scuffling did she catch a familiar, reassuring scent. Dawnstar. Another yowl rose above the treetops, and suddenly Mistlewhisker was running.

The deputy sprang over a fallen log, large paws thundering over the needle-strewn ground. She was a dark comet as she streaked towards the fight, breaking out of the bush line just as the creature scrambled to its taloned feet and shrieked in Dawnstar’s direction. Mistlewhisker rammed into the owl at full force, sending them both sprawling away from her leader. Vengeful claws tore into the belly of the surprised bird, blood and feathers spraying across the ground.

A panicked talon found its way past her defenses and sliced Mistlewhisker’s flank, earning a pained grunt from the deputy and another claw to the face. The owl shrieked as it tried to get away, wings flapping uselessly. But Mistlewhisker wouldn’t let this transgressor go. The sharp tang of blood mixed with Dawnstar’s scent had turned Mistlewhisker into a single-minded assassin. Anything that threatened her queen must die.

Dark paws pinning striped wings, Mistlewhisker reached down and clamped her jaws around the feathery throat of the owl. A terrified screech died in its throat as she bit down and tore, the owl gurgling frightfully for a moment before falling limp underneath her. As Mistlewhisker panted above her kill, the forest returned to its usual nighttime cacophony.

As the red haze of bloodlust faded from Mistlewhisker’s vision, she turned to face Dawnstar. Aside from a couple nasty puncture wounds on her shoulders, she seemed okay. Mistlewhisker stepped off the owl’s rapidly cooling corpse and padded over to her leader. A single green eye scanned Dawnstar’s face, lingering a little too long on her golden eyes, turned tawny in the silver moonlight. She wanted to say something to fill the silence, but all words felt hollow. What did you say to someone whose life you saved? “You’re welcome”? That felt disrespectful. “Are you alright?” Of course she was alright. Asking would imply she had been in danger to begin with.

Would Dawnstar accept her defense? Or would she scoff and claim Mistlewhisker had interrupted?

“Was that guy bothering you?” She finally meowed, eye twitching as she mentally slammed her face into the ground in embarrassment. Usually Mistlewhisker was cool and unflappable. Now in the face of the cat she held in the highest esteem, she was nothing but a bumbling fool. She hoped StarClan struck her down where she stood.

Massive wings and a body full of feathers obscured her view as the owl attacked her again. In her fury, she reared on her hind legs and ripped away feathers and flesh, blood beading the owl's chest. Any other cat might have felt an inkling of fear, of certainty that death would be coming for them, but all Dawnstar cared about pinning the foul creature; so she could rip out its throat!

She was too livid to bother acknowledging the sheer pain vibrating through her nerves. Death courted Dawnstar more times than she could count, and so far only three times had she fallen victim to the fiend's advantage. Considering that she has killed bigger, (debatable) worse, threats than this, she was confident that she'd get out of this alive... possibly missing an eye or an ear though.

She dropped back down to all fours to avoid a beak coming at her face. The cruel curve of its beak looked horribly dangerous and Dawnstar didn't want it anywhere near her face. Getting back to the clan maimed would be exceedingly difficult, and she wasn't looking forward to attempting. The owl spread its magnificent, damaged wings, they looked strong enough to crack a spine in two, she assumed it was going to try and fly although whether it had been coming at her or not she'd never know.

A blur of black, which looked like a mass of shadows at first glance, rammed into the large bird with the force of a monster on a thunderpath, and bowled the bird over. She was not slacked jaw! Not like anyone was around to say otherwise. The fighting did not last long as the raptor was taken by surprise, and access to its throat was easier to gain, the owl's cry of terror as it was taken by death's grasp immensely satisfied her, even though she wasn't the one to do the deed.

The thick scent of blood filled the area, and the leader's heart slowly returned to its normal rate as her 'savior' turned to face her. In the shadows, the powerfully large build, and black pelt resembled two of her warriors in particular, but the splash of white on the muzzle and the single green orb separated the two. Damn it! It'd be easier to deal with the latter of the two. Dawnstar held a steady flame of irritation for him, and he had had a habit of spewing whatever came to his mind and often fueling her anger.

Her deputy on the other paw was the polar opposite. Outside of her former mate, current mate, and daughter Lostspark, few learned how to speak to her without pushing one of her many buttons, let alone engage in anything remotely considered playful. Mistlewhisker, however, seemed to know exactly how to tip-toe around offending the easily agitated leader, like now.

There was a stretch of silence as golden pools stared into the verdant hue, the leader's usual rage absent in her gaze and filled with curiosity. Dawnstar felt wet, almost sticky, globs of blood slowly pooling and spilling out of the cuts in her chest. They were ignored since Dawnstar was wrapped within her head and feelings. Emotions were tricky with her, she'd spent years analyzing herself for weaknesses and trying to figure out these fleeting things feelings. Dawnstar didn't understand them, but as reoccurring ones popped up she could at least try and relate with words.

The first time she felt this was when Grimhound brought her ShadowClan's first pelt, the second Slytiger killed that traitor who attempted to take one of her lives. Dawnstar's been raised since birth to be powerful and independent, to stand at the top by her mother; to protect the clan and the cats within it and she'd said she'd done a pretty good job of it. She was always quick to place herself between threats and her clan when it came down to it. She never asked, and never expected anything in return for it. So it was always strange when things were reversed, unexpected even.

Knowing that she did have those few rare souls that would actively put themselves in harm's way, would kill for her... it brought a mixture of her usual bitterness, but more diluted mixed with astonishment and some flavors of attraction. Nope, she could not settle on one set word for the emotion, that was the best description she got for it. Mistlewhisker had claimed her attention after their little fishing tripping, her last remark had Dawnstar considering the deputy to be vexing charmingly. But now this made more sense.

"Not anymore, thanks to you, I suppose," Dawnstar replied, finding the she-cat words more amusing than anything else. That had not been what she had thought would come out of Mistlewhisker's maw. It had certainly defused the weird tension she had been feeling. She had been waiting for the inevitable "are you okay" which would have immediately pissed her off. She was good at tip-toeing around the Queen of Mean's anger issues.

"That's two for two now. Is this going to become a regular thing between us?" She quired teasingly after sitting down, lapping at the coagulating blood on her chest. Mistlewhisker was growing to have a knack for murdering hindrances, big or small. Grimhound used to serve as her bane of death, the one she sent out when she needed someone dead or maimed. He disappeared, and she had been hoping to replace him with Vulturefang, but he proved unfit and disappeared. Mistlewhisker hadn't been on her radar as an executioner but Dawnstar could work with this.

"I need cobwebs and marigolds." She meowed absentmindedly as she finished cleaning the cuts on her chest to the best of her ability. Her golden orbs gleamed in the moonlight as she subtly scanned Mistlewhisker, noticing the cut on her flank. She glowered at the wound as if she gazed at it long enough it would wither and disappear underneath her dissatisfaction.

The discovery of her newfound attraction to the molly would have to be put on hold, as Dawnstar did not like to dance around or play the courting game. She tended to demand or accept cats as her mate without asking their thoughts. But that was only after she was dead certain she wouldn't be turned down. She was too possessive to let cats go once she had them and was too petty and vengeful to break things off amicably let alone let an ex walk away from her alive.

Even after all these years of his disappearance, she still considered Grimhound hers. Taking Dawnstar as a mate was a (lethal) lifelong commitment. She wasn't going to waste her time, or force a cat's paw if the interest wasn't mutual, she wasn't that evil. Dawnstar would have to wait and see before jumping the gun.

Mistlewhisker awaited StarClan’s retribution for her blurted idiocy, but no smite came. Alright then, looks like she would have to take it into her own paws and bury herself far beneath the forest floor where no one could find her. WindClan used to tunnel, right? Maybe someone still knew the old ways and would teach her how. The only thing more unlikely than someone knowing how to tunnel anymore was a WindClan cat teaching her. Looks like she would have to face the world once again today.

Luckily, Dawnstar didn’t comment beyond vague acknowledgement of her statement. Amusement danced in her golden eyes, but instead of embarrassment, Mistlewhisker felt the desire to keep that amusement there for as long as possible.

“Two for two”. Yes, she supposed it was. First the frog who dared use Dawnstar’s face as a landing pad, and the owl who mistakenly thought the leader might be a good snack. Mistlewhisker lapped at her shoulder, partially to hide the heat that rose to her face at the idea of this being ‘regular’. “Do you mean being alone in the forest, or me eliminating whatever makes the mistake of crossing you?” There was a teasing lilt in her voice.

Dawnstar’s observation of her wounds had Mistlewhisker pushing herself to her paws, striding into the shadows with her jaws unhinged to scent for herbs. Collecting them wasn’t hard, as cobwebs and marigold were common. Thanks to Lostspark teaching the Enforcers how to do basic field medicine, Mistlewhisker knew how to apply the poultice and bandage. Whether Dawnstar would let her that close was a different question entirely. As she padded back, two marigolds and a wad of cobwebs around her tail, she thought of a further response to the teasing remark she left the leader with. Maybe she could still say it and it wouldn’t be awkward. Even if it was, Mistlewhisker wasn’t one to get bothered by that sort of thing. At least, she used to not.

Returning into the dimly lit clearing, Mistlewhisker pushed the marigold towards Dawnstar and began unraveling the webs from her tail. “I would do it again, you know.” She murmured, not looking up and instead focusing on laying the webs out so they could be easily used. “Both find you in the forest and kill whatever you asked me to. As many times as you require of me.” Finally she looked up, meeting Dawnstar’s intense gaze. This felt like a tipping point, and while Mistlewhisker was certain of her devotion to Dawnstar, she felt herself hesitating at the precipice. But she must have seen something, a twitch of an expression, a glimmer in her eyes, because suddenly Mistlewhisker was more sure than anything that she would dive headfirst into whatever this was. Whatever this could be.

@Mica - Mistlewhisker
The leader ducked her head to inspect the puncture wounds left by the owl as Mistlewhisker replied, hiding her smirk. She tested her tolerance for moving a little here and there, stretching and irritating the muscles in her chest. They stung painfully, but at a level that she could tolerate. She could make the journey home without much trouble.

Perhaps it was due to how often she found herself in a fight, but she was gifted with healing quicker than most at least minor things like this. Well, to anyone else the cuts in her chest would be anything but minor, but after dying as cruelly as she has multiple times. If it wasn't life-threatening or bone-breaking, she'd classify the wound as minor.

She drew her head back up as the deputy vanished into the shadows, leaving her alone. Dawnstar's sun-hued orbs were drawn to the large raptor that lay unmoving. She padded over to the dead creature and ignored the way her flesh and muscle stretched thin over the broad chest bone. The hurt wasn't intense or yowl-worthy more like an anyone flea she wished to itch away. She left a barely noticeable trail of crimson in her wake with the movement. The she-cat's nerves were a little messed up due to all the scarring and whatnot. She assumed that played a part in her ability to tolerate injuries that would leave cats crying for their mothers.

New blood seeped out of the cracks of the dry blood with each pawstep. By the time she reached the bird it was like she had never cleaned herself in the first place. How bothersome. Her ears twitched toward the return she-cat, and her eyes followed shortly after. Dawnstar blinked lazily after noticing she had found both herbs she had listed. She was enjoying having a competent deputy more and more.

Dawnstar started cleaning her wound again while Mistlewhisker set the herbs down. The only indication that the Queen of Mean was listening to her was her tattered ears turned towards her. Her amber glare flickered towards Mistlewhisker as she commented on doing this again. That was a curious thing to say it intrigued her for a total of three heartbeats, and then the spark in her molten golden irises dimmed.

"Of course you would, you're a loyal warrior of ShadowClan. It'd only make sense that you'd defend your leader and clanmate as any good warrior would." Dawnstar's tone was a little flatter (bitter) than before as if she were stating the obvious. She needed better lighting to evaluate the damage done to her chest. Her night vision was spectacular for a member of ShadowClan but there was a reason medicine cats often worked by moonlight or daylight.

She could always speak to Mossfreckle or Lostspark if the pain spiked during daylight. "Do you know how to apply those?" She asked giving Mistlewhisker her full attention, and pointed her nose to the herbs she was sorting. She could do it herself. Marigolds and cobwebs were usually the herbs she went to when it came to flesh wounds like these, they were also among the few herbs she was very familiar with. However, it'd be easier with aid.

Dawnstar did not like cats in her personal space. It took her seasons to get used to even touching cats in remotely familiar ways without triggering the urge to attack them. When she was in pain it was worse. Pain was associated with battle and fighting, and she often had to constantly remind herself not to tear out her medicine cat's eyes when it came to healing her. It wasn't as bad with cats she felt had no motive for hurting or killing her, like Lostspark. Or at least that's why she thought she was fine with Lostspark.

Since it was an instinctual reflex, Dawnstar didn't know how she'd react to cats in her personal space until they were there. She hasn't hurt any cats since she was an apprentice that one time, but there was always that chance like playing with fire.

For a moment, it seemed as though the two felines were at a tipping point, staring each other in the eyes and trying to gauge something that neither of them were familiar with.

Then, the moment was broken. Dawnstar's reaction to Mistlewhisker's expression of loyalty was... muted. It left the deputy flailing in the void, reaching for a foothold that had been ripped from her. After the shock and confusion were snuffed out by her stony defenses, shame crept in. What had she been expecting? A sweet moment between a goddess and her follower? Mistlewhisker was a fool, it seemed. She was meant to stay in her place. At Dawnstar's back, watching her blind spots so the clan could run effectively. But didn't the leader understand? Dawnstar's will was ShadowClan's will. Maybe she understood too well the burden of someone holding a clan upon her shoulders.

Mistlewhisker was ambitious, and her position as deputy was the most important thing to her. Dawnstar wanted someone who would stay in their lane and do what they were asked. Mistlewhisker was that cat. She wouldn't jeopardize everything by listening to her heart of all damned things. All that indicated her struggle was a slight narrowing of her pupil before she blinked and looked at the herbs between them.

"Yes. Lostspark taught the Enforcers in basic first aid a moon or so ago." She meowed at the asked question, reaching down to take the marigold into her jaw before pausing. "My duty is to serve the clan." The deputy insisted quietly, gaze serious. "I love ShadowClan, and wish to keep it the strongest clan in the forest." Her one good eye glinted sharply in the watery moonlight. "Whether it be as a warrior, as an Enforcer, or as Deputy. Yes, you fall within the realm of the clan. So it is my duty to protect and serve you." Her words were halting, and she let the statement fade in the space between them. It was clear there was more to her statement, but the usually concise and effective speaker was suddenly drowning in incompetent words. She didn't watch Dawnstar for a reaction, hiding her uncharacteristic nerves by grabbing the marigold.

Mistlewhisker was whatever Dawnstar wanted her to be. But even as the deputy chewed the marigold, the bitter taste in her mouth had nothing to do with the herbs. Mistlewhisker leaned forward, eyeing the wounds in the dim moonlight carefully before gently and purposefully applying the poultice. She did it like she did everything in her life. Carefully calculated, each option weighed, the most efficient route taken. Her touch was gentle--gentler than a cat of her size should have been able to manage.

[Mistlewhisker used +1 marigold!]

Once she was done with that step, she spit out the marigold onto the thin grass and reached for the cobweb. This was a little more of a time intensive process, as in the dark it was difficult to see how the cobweb was maneuvering. While Mistlewhisker would have preferred to get it over with and go back to camp where she could slip back into the comfort of her place in the clan, it seemed the stars were here to torment her, and gave her plenty of silence to think in.

Mistlewhisker was close to many cats. Hawkbite, Squirrelrise, Goopywhisker to name a few. But the pull she felt towards Dawnstar was different. It rivaled her love for ShadowClan, and that terrified her. What would Dawnstar say if she knew the traitorous thoughts swirling through Mistlewhisker's mind? That she would destroy the clan, the forest, the stars if it meant enacting the shadow queen's will? Would she be glad? Disgusted? Would she laugh at Mistlewhisker's devotion? Cast her aside for even thinking about choosing Dawnstar over the clan? It suddenly felt like Mistlewhisker was hurtling towards her own self-inflicted worst nightmare.

Finally, the cobwebs were secured, and the black feline sat back to study her work. Shoddy, but it would do until they got home.

[Mistlewhisker used +1 cobweb!]

Mistlewhisker looked at Dawnstar and knew she was disgusted with herself. She was listening to her heart more and more, and all it seemed to do was give her grief in return. This was not something she could afford to mess up. ShadowClan was everything to a cat like Mistlewhisker. It was part of the reason she took her duties so seriously. Running patrols, training apprentices, keeping her clanmates in line--everything she did gave her purpose. She lived to be deputy.

But all she could think about in that moment was how Dawnstar made her want to live for something else, too. And suddenly Mistlewhisker wasn't sure she could go another day without telling her.

"My loyalty is to you. You, and no other." She murmured, infuriated and ashamed by her misplaced boldness. It was the vow of fealty and devotion she had been wanting to give for moons. Laid out in between them, ready for its judgement. Her judgement.

[I’m so sorry I feel like this post is so lacking : sob :]

Default Re: Will you kill for me?

@Mica - Mistlewhisker [not the greatest, but she's not an easy cat to write when it comes to her emotions]

Her ripped-up ears frantically jerked forward and backward while the leader digested Mistlewhisker's response. They finally stilled as disappointment settled like a thick tar in her chest. So she couldn't have Mistlewhisker??? When she baited the deputy she hadn't been expecting such a lackluster response. Dawnstar hadn't thought she had been wrong. Then again, she wasn't used to dealing with cats like Mistlewhisker, more quiet and stoic, when it came to potential mates.

Those who had shown interest beyond the usual subordinate-leader relationship made themselves quite clear. Mistlewhisker was more of a mystery for the dark tabby and thus confused her. If the deputy acted as she did with Dawnstar with everyone, then Dawnstar supposed she could have mistaken something there that wasn't. It'd be easier if Dawnstar had bothered observing Mistlewhisker's interactions with others and comparing them to theirs. However, the mere thought had her wanted to murders so maybe it was better she hadn't.

She didn't know why this left her bitter and moody about it. Dawnstar stiffed and her pelt did a full-body twitch as Mistlewhisker entered her personal space. She focused on not jerking or flinching away at the black she-cat's touch instead of on the strange awkward tension that filled the air. Despite how gentle she was being, the poultice still stung when applied. She quietly flexed her claws in and out of the grass and dirt to give her something other than stew in her head.

However, her disappointment with how things turned out was almost palpable. Thus refused to leave her alone. Dawnstar wasn't sure if her pride or her ego was hurt. It wasn't like the she-cat had shot her down, Dawnstar was very careful when it came to rejection cause she was well aware that she was quite immature when denied something she showed appeal in. That is why she never reciprocated feelings or mutualized any interest until she was dead certain she'd get what she wanted.

Now she'd feel unsettled by Mistlewhisker for who knows how long all because of an assumption. She swallowed an upset hiss and was not to brood about this. She wanted to go back to camp, preferably with the owl to pluck its feathers, and brood in her den. It wasn't an outright rejection, even if it felt like it, so she assumed her annoyance would cease as the days passed. She couldn't be running around snapping at her deputy or causing discord because Mistlewhisker unintentionally stepped on her toes.

Dawnstar took a moment to inspect the she-cat's work once done. It was neater than Dawnstar's usual patch job, not as good as a medicine cat, but good enough. The leader parted her maw to comment about Mistlewhisker having a future in healing in jest, but the molly was mumbling something before she could speak. She would have completely missed what was spoken if her ears weren't as sharp.

Ugh! Seriously. Dawnstar takes it back. Mistlewhisker was almost as infuriating as Slytiger on a good day. Why didn't she say that from the start?! The molly had Dawnstar second-guessing herself and loathing every second of it for how long!!! They were going to the fact that it was Dawnstar's fault for being unable to properly communicate without trying to manipulate said she-cat, some of the conflict she had been feeling faded away now that she had what she wanted.

"Oh, how bold. I suppose such devotion is worthy of allowing you to be my mate." She meowed smugly as if she hadn't just been agonizing about being unable to have Mistlewhisker as her mate or unconsciously hurt that she had been turned down unintentionally.

The words thundered through Mistlewhisker's ears, and instead of reeling at the offer held out in front of her, she just...

Laughed?

It was less of a laugh and more of a dry, low chuckle, but it was far from the reaction the Deputy had expected for herself. Not that she could expect something as unorthodox as this. All of the tension, the stress and anxiety growing in Mistlewhisker's heart until it threatened to explode, all of it released in a slow rush of laughter. Mistlewhisker met Dawnstar's gaze, eye glittering with an openness that wasn't there before. It was teasing, it was light, it wasn't held back by the chains she had previously kept upon herself. Could this have been a trick? Yes. But Hawkbite's words rang through her head, and suddenly Mistlewhisker was willing to dive headfirst into this unknown.

"If you will it, it shall be done." She purred. "I am honored to be given this opportunity." Okay, well, she might have been a little less uptight than normal, but she was still formal beyond reason.

Mistlewhisker had never wanted a mate. Never thought it necessary. ShadowClan was never devoid of kits, and if it reached that point she could always find a suitable male to sire her own. Romance, emotional intimacy... all things Mistlewhisker had scoffed at as an apprentice and young warrior. She felt no desire for any of it. Her mother had insisted that one day she might feel differently, but it wasn't until she was over forty moons of age that finally something sparked in her heart. But even though this was a new experience for her, Mistlewhisker was less nervous than she felt she should have been. She and Dawnstar worked well together. There was a constant push and pull, the reliable strength of two cats on each end of fate's thread, keeping the clan between them--and by extension each other--steady. Mistlewhisker had Dawnstar's back unconditionally, and as long as she kept up her part of the duties, she was worthy of Dawnstar's attention.

A hilarious thought occurred to her in that moment as well. She supposed she might have something in common with Slytiger, now. They couldn't be more opposite personality-wise, but they both had a rock-steady dedication to the she-cat they served. The idea of consistently interacting with him promised an eventual migraine, so she avoided it and instead focused on the moonlit Leader in front of her. "Come," she murmured, "let us head home." Mistlewhisker shifted the owl's corpse around so she could carry it properly, grunting around the feathers as they slapped her face. Frogs never did this. Frogs were easy. But when was the last time she liked something easy?

As the pair began slowly making their way back, Mistlewhisker sticking close to Dawnstar in case the leader needed stability, but never touching her unless the Leader moved to on her own. It was... a little weird for Mistlewhisker. She kept tumbling the word "mate" around in her head, trying to figure out where it would fit in her life. Mistlewhisker was figuratively married to her job, but she supposed that was another reason she and Dawnstar made a good match. They were both committed to the clan first no matter what. But what would this relationship look like? Would Mistlewhisker move into the leader's den? The thought had her reeling for a moment and she tripped over a root. Perhaps she should just stay in the warrior's den. That was much more comfortable with her. Besides she was sure she'd seen Slytiger in there before, too.

But there was also the chance that he had been booted out by the cantankerous Leader. Yeesh.

By the time camp came into view, Mistlewhisker had made the executive decision to simply Not Think About It Until The Morning. Simple, effective, perfectly consequence-free! Surely she wouldn't continue to push off processing this for several moons. Surely not.

Before the entered, Mistlewhisker set the owl down and directed her attention to Dawnstar again. "Do you want me to fetch Lostspark or Mossfreckle?"
