Clovepool's fluffly brindled chest hair rose and fell with every breath she took, her entire frame enveloped in her dark plumage of luxurious fur. Even though she merely stood, her presence alone proved intimidating. Although she wasn't a big cat physically, it was her stature, the way she carried herself like a looming apex predator.
Once Shadepaw was finished speaking, her bobbed tail flicked impatiently, a subtle warning of her displeasure before she began stepping closer to Shadepaw. Tsk, typical. Excuses excuses, no matter how valid they were, were still excuses. Without warning, Clovepool stalked forward confidently towards her daughter and stopped a mere inch away from where she was sitting. "You’ve been assigned to a tour of the territory instead of proper training. How... typical." She purred, a tinge of disappointment seeping into her melodic voice.

She stared quietly at her daughter with daunting orbs. And for a few beats, she said nothing. Craning her neck down slightly to be at eye level with Shadepaw, Clovepool said not a word for a solid few seconds and maintained a blank, emotionless stare. There was a palpable tension in the air; Clovepool was unpredictable. There was no telling what she would do and how far she would take it, at any given moment. Then, in the blink of an eye, she gave Shadepaw one long, rough lick on the top of her head before turning her frame around to leave, pausing briefly to turn her head back to her daughter, "The other apprentices may seem like distractions now, but they are part of your path to becoming a true warrior. If you think you can merely leap into training without understanding your peers and their weaknesses, you are sorely mistaken." She meowed matter-of-factly, her eyes narrowing as she flashed Shadepaw a parting sinister smile before padding off into the distance and setting her sights and warpath on Silentpaw.

Shadepaw was tense, very, very tense. Clovepool was disappointed. Just how she thought she would be. Resentment flared in her chest. Why couldn't she just be proud of Shadepaw instead of disappointed? No. She tamped down the thought. That was never going to happen. It was ridiculous thinking. She needed to earn Clovepool's love. That was all. She knew this. She also knew that a tour was strategically the best thing to do first, before learning anything else. Clovepool didn't think this was so. Maybe Clovepool was wrong. Nevertheless, she knew she had to train hard. She had to do better. I'll ask Shrewstep for more training right away, she decided. Her expression was carefully blank, her feelings shut down as Clovepool was around her. She dug in her claws again when her mother came closer. She tensed even more, but didn't move. Not. An. Inch. She remained fixed, motionless, as her mother gave her a lick and began talking. Clovepool was right. The other apprentices did seem like distractions. But she already knew all that about weaknesses and understanding. She wasn't dumb. She just... It didn't matter. Nothing did. Nothing except Clovepool and her expectations. She didn't move, either, when Clovepool stalked off. Her paws seemed glued to the ground.

She gazed at Silentpaw. She wasn't particularly close to him, exactly, but right now she needed escape. She knew that he would understand better than anyone what she was going through. Going to him would be a distraction. Shen needed a distraction right now. She didn't care that he was talking to another apprentice. Besides... Clovepool had told her to get to know the other apprentices better. This was a chance.

Shadepaw unsheathed her claws, untensed her muscles. Slowly and deliberately she rose from her sitting position. She made her way to the two apprentices, murmuring a subdued "Hello." No emotion showed from her earlier interaction. But inside was a roil of thoughts and feelings she didn't understand. She needed her brother right now. Shadepaw pressed her face briefly, quickly, so quickly that she hoped Clovepool wouldn't notice, against Silentpaw's fur, then turned to the new apprentice. She internally shook her head, clearing it. She didn't recognize the apprentice. She felt curiosity now, sharp and clear, helping her feel more grounded in the moment. Curiosity she could manage. She liked figuring out things, using her head to solve problems. "Who are you?" she asked. Not unfriendly or hostile, but not particularly warm either.

His gaze was back on Shadepaw and Clovepool. Well, just Shadepaw now, given that Clovepool was no longer with her. Actually, Shadepaw was now walking towards him. Great. Silentpaw stiffened, instinctively straightening up, matching the flame-coloured apprentice beside him. What could she possibly want?

As Shadepaw approached, he gave her nothing but a quick glance. He hoped Firepaw, outgoing as she was, would keep her distracted.
Clovepool seemed displeased earlier. And Shadepaw looks somewhat tense. What if she was here to complain and complain?
No, that wasn't right. That wasn't like Shadepaw.
He let himself relax as Shadepaw came over, saying only a mere greeting.
However the tension that spread through his body only returned heartbeats later when Shadepaw briefly pressed her face to his fur.
What was this?
Silentpaw thought he felt... Nervous, for the first time in such a long time.
Why was she doing this? What was the point?
Was she pitying him?
He didn't need pity, he needed acceptance from his mother!

He wanted to snap at her, to hiss at her.

But he just couldn't bring himself to do so.

He didn't hear Shadepaw's next question.
