It was as if everything played out in slow motion.
The hawk swooping down, Elderkits screech. Wisteriawren and Starrykit. The cats rushing in to help. It was as if their pelts surged together into a flood, but towards the wrong target. Aspenpaws demands coming far too late. He felt himself glued to the ground in shock.
There was no way a kit could survive such a fall, and no way any cat could reach them.
Fenpath wasnt sure what went through his head, maybe it was instinct? Or perhaps there was nothing at all in his mind, but something like pure adrenaline forced his paws forwards. Shoving his way past the crowd, hardly caring who he bumped into, Fenpath ran. This wasnt good, not at all. He had to do something, anything. The hawk was already far out of anycats reach.
His heartbeat pounding in his ears, legs carrying himself as fast as he could go, head crained back, it was as if everything but the kit in the hawks claws went black. Perhaps his own body would be enough to soften a drop? Elderkit would still get hurt but at the moment it was his best option. Chase it until it dropped them, then pray to the world itself that he would be able to get himself underneath.
He'd do anything in his power to save Elderkit.
