Cricket practically inhaled her mouse, while Notch was much more intentional about his. He watched the kit scarf down the mush, whiskers twitching with satisfaction. "Still hungry?" He asked.

Cricket looked up immediately, swallowing the mouthful she had in the back of her throat. "I am!" She mewed cheerfully, confused by Notch's glare. She didn't realize he was strictly referring to the kit.

* He looked up at Notch and shook his head. He looked up at Cricket and then back at Notch. He unsteadily padded over to the rest of the mouse that Notch had used for the mush and pushed it with his body over to Cricket. *

Cricket looked at Notch triumphantly, giving an arrogant snort. "Seems this kit knows some respect at least."

Notch rolled his eyes but said nothing. He looked at the kit and crouched down. "Are you sure you're not still hungry little one?" He asked, flicking his tail in Cricket's direction. "That big loudmouth is able to hunt for herself." He pointed out, wanting to ensure the kit was able to eat before either of them.

Cricket grunted with triumph. She picked up the mouse, glancing down at the kit with an expression betraying that she was deep in the thought. Cricket set the mouse down and took a small bite out, chewing it up to more mush and setting it down for the kit. "There." She huffed, returning to ravenously eating the remaining mouse.

Notch only heaved a sigh, then shook his head. He couldn't fathom why Cricket always had to make things so difficult. And Cricket felt it, she looked up at him with defiance in her eyes. "What?" She growled, swallowing a mouthful of mouse. "The kid earned it. He gave me the mouse, so he deserved to share a little." Notch's tail lashed in the air, but he said nothing. Only stared at Cricket judgmentally. She sounds so defensive... He noted.

"Besides," the brown she-cat continued, "he's talking more." Notch blinked, realizing that Cricket was right. He looked at the small kit who yesterday could only mewl pitifully, and wondered again how old he was and where he came from. And will where he came from be coming back... Notch's ears flattened at the thought. He couldn't grasp a mother that would let a kit this young wander alone, unless he was abandoned or his mother died. But Notch knew from his many moons in the wilds, you never knew what anycat's backstory was. Resolutely, he simply decided they'd have to stay alert.

"Cricket," he mewed, his voice now stern and almost grim, "we need to discuss next steps."

Cricket froze, clearly she knew what he meant. They needed to move on, but was the kit coming with them? They shared a glance before looking to the kit. Both of their minds churning as to how to approach this scenario. If the kit wasn't abandoned, his parents would no doubt be looking for him. But they couldn't assume that and just leave a defenseless kit here in good conscious...so....what should they do now?

* He looked up at the two and then looked to his flanks. Each side plastered with scars from abuse. He looked up at them and stumbled over to Cricket. He ate the mush she had sat down for him and then looked up at her. He tried to talk, but not much came out. Broken words. *

Cricket and Notch both tensed. The brown she-cat wasn't entirely sure she'd heard the kit correctly, but Notch's grave expression told her that he did. Which only convinced her that so did she. A growl rumbled deep in her chest. "Cowards!" She spat. "What kind of fox-heart goes after a kit?"

Notch shook his head. He understood Cricket's disbelief. This difference in morals is why they left the previous group they were in - the leader there was a vengeful dark-hearted cat who was not above cowardly actions to achieve his goals. Notch shuddered at the memories that came flooding back to him. But right now they had bigger issues. "Come." He meowed simply, his voice hard with urgency. "We need to move."

Cricket nodded in agreement, promptly helping Notch to bury the bones to prevent predators from following them. Notch looked at Cricket and angled his ears to the kit. "You may have to carry him." He mewed. Cricket interally groaned, turning to look at the kit. "Do you need to be carried?" She asked. "Or can you walk on your own?"
