"I dunno if the berries are worth being blind over." Wolfhive was still trying to blink away the spots. It was kind of working? They were starting to fade, at least.

As Beachpaw nommed the berry Wolfhive was kinda tempted to steal it, but Beachpaw stole some from themselves when they smeared it all over their paw and muzzle. "Your fur's gonna stick together," he mumbled as he leaned over to clean some of it off. The turtle shape did give him an idea.. he stole some from Beachpaw's paws and wiped it alongside it. 'Now we have two turtles!" Blobs were definitely a bit more accurate.

Beachpaw -

"Aww, look at them, they're perfect for each other," Beachpaw swooned at the blobby turtles, enamored. They were cute! And.. turtles, if you squinted. Two berry turtles hanging out on a rock on a sunny day, picturesque.

Heading over to the rock had moved Beachpaw into more direct sunrays, and they were starting to feel it."How do you think they stay cool? Not like they can run anywhere and feel the breeze in their fur." The whole shell setup seemed like a trap for warmth.

"Oh! We should finish this off--" Beachpaw indicated what was left of the prey picnic (not much), "and go towards that puny pond! I gotta get this berry goop off anyway." It was pretty small, more like a slightly-deeper-than-average puddle of water, perhaps attributed to the hot and dry greenleaf they'd been enduring.

Mmm, yep Wolfhive had already finished chowing down on the last bit of his prey. "Aren't turtles kinda cold to begin with?" He never really touched them, but they didn't seem warm without fur. "Maybe they're like, land fish."

The pond was fine, but Wolfhive was itching for something a bit.. more. The sun was cooking him, making his dark fur bordering on unbearably hot. "We could always.. go down the cliff. To the beach." He flashed him a small grin. "There's a lot more water too."

Beachpaw -

They narrowed their eyes in thought and couldn't recall a time where they'd touched a turtle. Why wouldn't they be warm like everything else they'd encountered? Sure, Beachpaw had a run-in with a snake in their youth, but they hadn't stopped to perform a temperature check.

"Okay, to the beach!" they declared and prepared to start off, but not prior to sniffing at the prey--making sure there was nothing else to gobble up. Beachpaw bounced about in a playful war dance, then crouched down like they were about to take off. "Meet you there? Just don't fall on your face, it's too pretty to get wasted on the side of a cliff!"

Beachpaw jolted forward and zipped off toward the beach, but couldn't have been more than a few strides in when their sides cramped from eating too recently. "Aaa! The berries! They hurt! They're ruining me!"

Wolfhive watched as Beachpaw crouched down, muzzle furrowed. "I don't think I'm the one at risk of falling on my face!" He was very graceful, thank u very much! Wolfhive tensed his muscles as Beachpaw began to zoomie away and sprang after them, easily overtaking them with his longer legs.

.. But concern sparked his heart, and he skidded to a stop to check on them. "You alright??"

Beachpaw -

The pain dramatically brought them to a slow, gradual jog before collapsing into the grass and rolling about with a moan of pain. Beachpaw’s sides HURT. This was a mistake. Not the berries. Running was terrible. Why did anyone do this voluntarily? Why were THEY doing this voluntarily? Stupid race.

What would make them feel better despite the circumstances? Probably more berries.

Beachpaw groaned and crumpled up, which eased a bit of the cramping sensation. The complaints spilled as they thrashed from side to side. “I shouldn’t have had so maaaany! No, wait, I should’ve--I shouldn’t have gone runniiiiinggg!” Now that the strenuous activity had mostly stopped, their sad bodily state was also becoming more tolerable.

Beachpaw yipped in surprise and jolted upright, back on their paws. “Hey! Something bit me! What is it?” They were turning in circles trying to spot whatever had caused the sharp pain in their flank.

Well, on the bright side Beachpaw seemed fine. The downside? They rolled on some sandburrs. "Stay still!" Wolfhive chided as he reached to pluck the burr out of Beachpaw's pelt. "It's just a sandburr - they're sometimes in fields 'n look kinda like grass." No real damage was done, it was largely just uncomfortable.

Wolfhive discarded the burrs and sprang past Beachpaw. "Last cat to the shore's stinky!"

He was careful to not go too fast, as to not lose Beachpaw. The race down the cliffs would take a few moments and at the end of it, Beachpaw would be ahead. It didn't stop Wolfhive from blasting into the ocean water, relieved to sink into the cold after being do unbearably hot! "Gotta wash it off!" He'd splash some water toward Beachpaw for good measure.

Beachpaw squinted at these SANDBURRS. And in a quick yoink, they yanked the remaining prickly bits of the stragglers from their fur. Begone, evil thorns. They didn’t even understand where those nasty buggers had come from since no sandburr tree or sandburr plant was growing the Dark Forest incarnates.

Bounding with Wolfhive, Beachpaw skidded to a stop where the water met the shore before moving forward tentatively, with more care in their step as it engulfed their paws, legs, and touched the bottom of their belly. The reprieve from summer’s heat felt nice, the sensation of the water itself not as much.

They splashed back with an accentuating noise, then began thrashing both to escalate the assault on Wolfpaw and get cool water onto harder-to-reach places without submerging themself deeper.

"Hey!" Wolfhive laughed as he was splashed back, then sputtered when a mouthful of salt water caught him in the mouth. "Yuck!"

He escaped the water to shake his pelt off on the beach. In the nearby field, he caught sight of a pair of butterflies and his instinct was to KILL.

Wolfhive lowered himself into a crouch and began to stalk one of them, when his paw landed in a soft mound - and immediately he felt the bites of a thousand angry ants. "Ow! Damn it! Gitoff!" He aggressively shook his paw and leg, trying to remove them before ultimately rushing back to the water to drown them. "Assholes!"

Beachpaw -

In an act of bravery, Beachpaw sunk their muzzle into the water with eyes screwed tight, feeling the coldness rush over their mouth, nose, and spread to their cheeks before they pulled their face out again. A gasp for air accompanied their return to the surface, then an exhale of relief at how much better that was. Wearing a mask of chilled water served as an effective block against burning summer sun.

Beachpaw followed Wolfhive from the water and let their nerves settle again now that their paws were safely on land that didn’t shift with rolling waves. As nice as the dip had been, they didn’t think they’d ever grow sea legs properly.

Wolfhive was exclaiming about something. Beachpaw blinked back to the present as they scurried over to see the problem for themselves. “Oooooh, ants! . . . Ow! Angry ants!” They’d already begun the ascent up Beachpaw, who promptly shook them off. “Nasty! I hate ants! I hate THESE ants.”
