"That's not a scary story." Antpaw snarls, even more mean tempered than usual, "That's just you being a coward. Nevermind, so you've got nothing. Even the little kit's story was better than this."

Why had he come here again? Right, it was to get his mind off all the recent cat deaths and how there was nothing he could do about them. But it wasn't helping. Nothing was helping. It was only making things worse. Antpaw rakes his claws along the ground and lashes his tail out.

Alpinepaw sighed in disappointment. She was right about they would make fun of her story. Alpinepaw thought, "I remember most of the details, and yet only one had responded. He's right. I was a coward back then...Am I still one now?" She continued looking at the stars in slight sadness.

Beachpaw had peeked out of the apprentices’ den at the right time to overhear the bustle near the prey pile. It sounded like, ooooh! Scary stories! Maybe they wouldn’t be sleeping tonight, but having the fur scared off their tiny hiny was worth it. “Did I miss it? Is it over?” they asked, panicked, as they rushed over to join in. Beachpaw secured a spot and let their eyes drift over their Clanmates, eager to hear at least one. “Wait, no, we can’t be done yet! Let's get those stories goin' again. More stories, more stories!” And none of those cheap elder horror stories where they went on and on about how things were harder, colder, uphiller, eviler back in their day. Beachpaw wanted the real deal.

These younger cats... Definitely had quite the imagination, that was for sure. Where they came up with or heard these stories from was a bit worrying to him but he stays quiet, tail twitching behind him. No, no, he most definitely wasn't scared. That is until Beachpaw comes out of no where and has him jumping out of his fur. Blue eyes blown wide and heart racing in his chest he eyes the newly joined to the group apprentice with a twinge of fear in his gaze before beginning to lick at his chest fur in embarrassment. No, no, he wasn't unsettled... Wasn't scared... Definitely not.

There was no masking Wolfhive's irritation when Antpaw decided to interject, rudely. "Antpaw, let's be respectful. Alpinepaw, that was a lovely story." And even if it weren't, there were better ways to give feedback than tearing someone apart over stories by the prey pile. Just was unnecessary.

Once things settled down from the kid stories, Wolfhive cleared his throat. "I'll take this as my turn, then."

Originally, his plan had been to start first - but he hadn't wanted to take the wind out of the excited kits and apprentices who had their own story to tell. "This isn't some long lost tale from our ancestors, but it is something that predates the lives of many of you. This is the story of our old camp, and how it fell." From the perspective of a tiny kitten with a wild imagination, but they didn't know that part! .. Maybe the older cats might, but there was a reason it was a scary story and not an elder lesson.

"It was nightfall when the sounds started. A low, guttural groan that shook the core of our very camp and rattled the walls of our dens. Thrushstar was the first to investigate the nose - following it outside his den and into the clearing.

"That's when the ground cracked. Paws larger than the Stormcrest forced their way through the rift, causing more of the ground to shift and crumble away into the abyss. Thrushstar only had enough time to yell out and alert the Clan before the creature's head emerged, jaws agape with drool stringing from them.

"It lunged at him and within a heartbeat, our leader of the time was gone! Swallowed whole by the depth dweller, who's attention shifted to the sea of cats escaping. The elders' den was the first in reach, and with a mighty lash of its paw it both destroyed it and threw the elders into its mouth. Bumblestar - Bumblebreak then, had to act quickly and distract it with a few chosen cats before the monster consumed the whole Clan! They narrowly succeeded in keeping it off the majority before the ground fully caved in around the monster and buried it. With the ground being so unstable, it has been unable to re-emerge and continue its feast.

"Our Clan survived that fateful night, but the spot known as Haggard Ruins remains as a reminder of the creature that lurks beneath.. just waiting to return one day."
