Outside camp, Wolfhive would lead Beachpaw to where he'd set up a little picnic spot. They had some prey and a nice overlook of Firefly Cove.. it was rare ThunderClan cats braved the sprawling cliffs around them but Wolfhive wanted to take advantage of the view for once. "Figured we could get out of camp for a minute 'n just enjoy the day." Was too warm to do anything productive, and Wolfhive wasn't as concerned about predators - he could kill anything that threatened Beachpaw.

Beachpaw -

Arriving at their destination, Beachpaw was puzzled to see prey waiting for them. “Wait, did you set this up?” That was the only explanation barring something outlandish. Wolfhive’s intention for coming out here only backed their theory, and they suddenly felt—shy and flattered, because they couldn’t think of a time somebody had gone out of their way like this for their sake. It was sweet, and they were left flustered by the gesture. “I thought we were going to be training or something, this is WAY better. And the view!” Beachpaw plopped down by the fresh-kill to splay out lazily, basking while they snacked on the picnic's contents, still smiling stupidly over the entire ordeal. It was pretty clear they were beyond pleased with this turn of events.

"Yeah." Wolfhive watched Beachpaw settle in, barely containing the grin that etched across his muzzle. "We can train some other time, just enjoy yourself." Wolfhive especially needed the break.. he loved ThunderClan and he enjoyed helping train others and keeping the order of things, but he was running thin. "Stay here a second."

Wolfhive would go off into nearby brush to collect some berries. He had seen a small plant that grew close to the ground, and had large, red fruit growing from it. Wolfhive's instincts told him it was safe to eat and after taste tasting one (and BOY was it good!) he brought a pawful back to Beachpaw. "They're very juicy, try one."

On the tip of their tongue, a “wait, come back!” threatened to spill over but it was too late, Wolfhive was already gone. Beachpaw counted down the seconds until his return, but the complaint fizzled upon seeing what he’d brought. Kit tales of deathberries stirred an alarmed, “So it’s not poisonous?” Well, if Wolfhive had tried one before and was fine…

Beachpaw didn’t need additional convincing, maybe too trusting of Wolfhive — even if he had brought deathberries over, they could’ve probably been lured into trying them too. They sniffed the strawberry, then lassoed it into their mouth only to make a rather delighted noise at the result. “Why don’t we have THAT on the fresh-kill pile?” What were they doing, living like peasants when this tasty little berry existed?

"No," a gentle assurance. "I'm not gonna poison you." Wolfhive didn't know exactly what these red berries were, but his survival instinct told him it was fine. And they tasted pretty good too! "It's more of a snack than real food - we could bring some back to camp for cats to try, but it won't be a staple in our prey pile."

Wolfhive shuffled to settle down nearby Beachpaw, enjoying the sun as it basked over him. "You like them that much, huh?"

Beachpaw hummed joyfully, enjoying. And then they scooped up another with a claw. "Yeah, stop me after another, or five more." Or they'd just eat all of them. They were delicious little suckers, and it didn't take them long to finish off the little berry pile with a disappointed "aww" upon returning for more but seeing only one (The Last Berry) waiting to be devoured. ...Probably should leave it for Wolfhive.

They flopped back with eyes closed, rolling onto their back lazily and letting the sun rays warm their fur. A silly, happy snippet of a tune came next, naturally: "Picnics and eatin' berries, rollin' around and being merry." They let the serenity engulf them for another moment, then their eyes were open again and blinking to readjust. "What if.... we have a contest! For the last berry. Who can stare at the sun longer."

"You can finish it." Beachpaw seemed to really like them, and Wolfhive didn't want to take the last one away from them. He enjoyed the berry too but it was nothing compared to the sweet taste of fresh meat.

.. Speaking of, Wolfhive tucked into one of the remaining pieces of prey. He caught it himself as a way to ensure it wasn't tampered with, though since being poisoned in his youth he developed a sense for detecting contamination. "Oh, you want to do a contest??" The sun staring.. it didn't sound like the best idea, but Wolfhive decided to humor them. "Okay, sure. We can do that. How you wanna go about it?"

“Yeah, a contest, so I can beat you fair and square and not just be a preyhog.” Beachpaw let out a short laugh (and semi-fittingly, a snort along with that) before zeroing in on this contest proposal. “We just, do it. We see who can keep their eyes on the sun the longest.” With that, they were done taking any additional questions about it. They screwed their eyes shut and rattled off, “Okay, ready? 3, 2, 1, GO!” Their eyes flew open again to squint at the sun.

To look directly at it… was more painful than they were expecting. But they were going for the gold. “Ooh, it’s burnin’, it’s burning real good. Yep, definitely burning. I might not have vision after this, but I'll have a full tummy. Ha!”

Wolfhive squinted at the sun but after a second, noped out. Yeah, nah, that hurt and made him see spots. "Okay, okay, you win - ow." He blinked as he looked away, shaking his head in the hopes it'd clear up the momentary blindness. Who thought this was fun?? "Y'know you can eat more of the prey too if you're still hungry, the berry will only fill you up so much." Come to think of it, too much might give them a tummy ache... oh well. Might be a bit late for that.

Yeeees, winner! Winner of the berry. Beachpaw wasted no time in collecting their prize and gobbled it down, their eyes closed both from the deliciousness of the berry and.. because, well, they did hurt a lot. Maybe not their brightest idea, heh. As they opened their eyes, they winced back. “Ow.. ow. Guess it’s an early retirement to the elders’ den for me. I can tell all those future kits not to stare at the sun . . . unless there’s a berry at stake.”

Beachpaw’s tongue swept around their muzzle and felt the sticky residue, the remnants of cramming them in their mouth a bit.. too enthusiastically. They wiped what they could away with their paw, but then the problem merely shifted to a new dilemma: it was on their paw. Finally, their struggle came to an end when they were able to swipe it onto a nearby boulder.

Not bad handiwork. “It looks like a turtle!” More accurately, a blob of berry-smear.
