Alpinepaw was on a border patrol with three other cats in the forest. She didn't really talk to the other cats, but she was listening to their conversation. Sometimes, one of them asked her a question and she replied. They were nearing the RiverClan-ThunderClan border. Something horrible was bound to happen at any moment...

"It's so nice out here in the summer! Such a gentle breeze, and the trees shade us. I hope it doesn't get too hot." Fleckpaw meows to Alpinepaw light-heartedly. In fact, she had come down to a light case of sunstroke just a few days ago. It hadn't been serious, and with a trip to the medicine cat den and some rest, she was now good as new; but she still felt cautious.

Fleckpaw sniffs the air, but the wind is blowing away from them, not towards them, so she can't smell anything significent. Fleckpaw glances at Alpinepaw. "First patrol?" She asks kindly, "You look a little too nervous."

Appleleap

It was a nice day. The sun shone gently down on them, and a nice breeze prevented them from getting hot. In short, the perfect conditions for a patrol. Appleleap's strides were relaxed and unhurried, his eyes and ears trained on the group with him rather than the forest around them. There was no reason to be particularly alert; RiverClan was gone and he doubted any trespassers or predators would dare attack such a large group. Springlight had been alone when she was killed by the owl; he wasn't sure about Dovefluff, but she was probably fighting it solo or with only one other cat. They had a group of four. Besides, Darkecho was the patrol leader; he was sure the tom was looking out for any danger.

Maybe Appleleap's inattentiveness was part of the reason things went south so quickly. But he didn't know that.

Alpinepaw looked a bit nervous, and Fleckpaw commented on it. "Don't worry, kit," he told her with a smile he hoped was reassuring. "This may be a bit scary 'cause of what happened with Springlight and Dovefluff, but nothing bad's gonna happen. You hear all sorts of things at clan meetings, but the truth is nine out of ten times it's just a regular old patrol. And the border's completely safe now RiverClan's out of the picture."

Dark’echo; black Tom with patchy fur and deep green eyes.

Dark’echo’s ears picked up, lifting his tail for the patrol to be silent. “Hush.. can you hear that?” His ears flattened to his head with a growl. “Whatever it is… I don’t like it. Let’s keep moving, but keep an eye out.” He felt bad to unsettle the patrol especially because there was such a small apprentice who now looked like she was ready to jump out her fur. But the safety of the patrol is what mattered. It wouldn’t matter how scared she was if they never made it back to camp.

Alpinepaw grew a bit anxious as she heard what Darkecho had said. She hardly knew any of the patrol members. But, at least she was acquainted with Fleckpaw. Alpinepaw's fur slowly puffed up as she smelled the surrounding air. The scent was strange, one that they had not encountered before. The young apprentice carefully looked around while she quietly walked.

Fleckpaw's ears twitch. She also hears the sound of paws stepping on long swaying grass and twigs snapping. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it's from, and it's faint, but it's definitely there, ans by the sound of it, it's not a small creature either. Maybe it was another clan cat? Fleckpaw listens to Darkecho's advice and stays alert. After the win against Riverclan, she had also supposed that their cats wouldn't come back, but maybe they were wrong. Fleckpaw sniffs the air. The breeze had stilled a lot, but not enough. Her nose still does not catch much.

"Do you think it's a Riverclan cat?" Fleckpaw meows, readying her claws. She walks faster. She'll scare them off if they stepped foot onto their territory. Looks like her battle training might come in handy, she thinks with satisfaction.

Appleleap

Appleleap didn't catch the sound that had attracted the interest of Darkecho, but he fell silent as the tom lifted his tail in warning. He scented the air, but there was nothing; the breeze had all but disappeared, preventing scents from coming to them as easily as they normally did.

Appleleap's ears swivelled towards Fleckpaw as she asked them whether they thought the noise had been a RiverClan cat. "I doubt it," he replied in a hushed tone. "We would probably already know if they're back. I reckon it's just a hare or something. They're pretty big." That was his hope; it could easily be a predator or a trespasser. But Appleleap had always been an optimistic cat, and he was going to hope for the best until he was proven wrong. And a group of four could defeat a predator or trespasser, right? "Like I said," he continued, speaking to both apprentices now in a cheery tone, "nine out of ten times it's nothing."

As the patrol walked on, ears pricked, Appleleap commented that it could just be a hare or something, but Dark’echo rolled his eyes silently. No way. He heard what he heard. Suddenly, the scent became clear. “CAYOTES!” He hissed, as the pack came into view. “Hide!-“ he would have commanded, but it was too late. The smallest spotted them and howled to its pack, calling them over. “Oh… starclan. Our times up.”

The smallest of the coyotes was a pup. The pup walked over to Appleleap and howled once again. The family group became worried as they watched their youngest member head off. It was a bit smaller than the average warrior.

Alpinepaw never saw a coyote before and she froze next to Fleckpaw. Alpinepaw mumbled softly, "Oh Starclan, what are they? Something bad is gonna happen..." She was right about that.

Fleckpaw can also smell it now, there was no need for any wind; the scent was all over the place, right in their faces. And more than that, she can see them.

Fleckpaw hisses at the coyote pup, swiping her claws near it's muzzle as a warning as it comes uncomfortably close.

"There's four of us, and two of us are experienced warriors. It'll be fine." She tries to reassure Alpinepaw, but her voice is stressful and cautious. Fleckpaw counts the number of coyotes. How many are there? One, two, three... her expression turns more and more scared as she sees more and more enemies to fight. And few places to hide. "Darkecho and Appleleap, what should we do? Are we going to fight?"

Even if the warriors said yes, Fleckpaw wasn't sure what she would do- could she defeat a coyote? Fleckpaw didn't fancy her odds. She'll just have to listen to the patrol leader and try her best.
