Mallowpaw

As Mallowpaw watched the new apprentices find their mentors, a commotion caught her attention. Two apprentices were fighting- full on fighting, landing blows on each other. Soon enough a warrior pulled one of them off the other, and then cats were rushing towards them- an apprentice (Morningpaw, she thought his name was), a warrior, and another apprentice. Concern pooled in the pit of her stomach as the young brown tabby fell forward. Her eyes scanned his fallen form, and although she was a fair distance away, she thought she saw his flank move. Part of Mallowpaw wanted to go help, but there was nothing she could do. She wasn't a medicine cat; she would just serve as a hindrance to those who could actually do something.
Then Wolfhive was there, calming the storm, demoting Vinepaw and confining Beetlepaw to camp. He called Drizzlecloud over; surely that was a sign Pinepaw was alive. He wasn't a medicine cat, but he would know what a dead cat looked like, and she doubted he would bother with Drizzlecloud if Pinepaw was gone.
Mallowpaw's eyes were drawn back to Bumblestar as she spoke again. To her surprise, she didn't mention the chaos that had just unfolded, instead warning the mentors of the new apprentices to be careful with them. It was a confirmation that they were underaged; she just needed to figure out why.
Then Bumblestar called two apprentices up for their warrior ceremonies. Mallowpaw's gaze followed them as they approached the Stormcrest and made their vows. Her stomach sank like a stone. They were young. Kestrelpaw looked only eight or nine moons; Morningpaw, six or seven. And they were already becoming warriors. It was just another thing to highlight how behind on her training she was.
They got their warrior names, Flamesurge and Shockhoney. Bumblestar started the chant, but the words were lodged in her throat. It was stupid and petty, but she couldn't bring herself to be happy for them, couldn't bring herself to chant their names with the rest of the crowd. She just sat there, silent, while the joyous cries soared over camp, so different from the bleakness that filled her chest.
Mallowpaw was almost relieved when Bumblestar spoke again. She was choosing the medicine cats. Curiosity pricked her chest, a nice relief from the despondency that weighed it down, as she wondered who it would be. But just as Bumblestar was about to announce her choices, she leaned forward, her eyes unfocusing, blood trickling from her nose. Was she going to faint? Mallowpaw watched, anxiety tying her stomach in knots, as Spiderthroat scrambled onto the Stormcrest to support the leader. After a moment that stretched on and on, Bumblestar came out of her trance, and the deputy slithered off the rock.
My initial plan seems to have been… interrupted. What was going on? Was this the reason for Bumblestar's stupor? Had StarClan given her a vision or something? Trying to fit together the pieces in her mind, Mallowpaw listened as she announced the new healers.
Wolfpaw was the new medicine cat. An apprentice, taking up the role she thought could only be filled by adults. And Hollowpaw would be his apprentice, but the other clans wouldn't know about his rank. Bumblestar's reason made sense; the other clans seemed to have no qualms about attacking medicine cats, and she was sure some purposely targeted them. Mallowpaw could keep her mouth shut.
Bumblestar moved on to reporting a fox attack. Another cat dead to a predator. The going out of camp rule was changed; two warriors now had to accompany any apprentices. Mallowpaw wondered how that would impact her training sessions; Wolfhive would have to bring another warrior along. Maybe Risingstorm; they seemed fairly close.
A shout caught her attention, and Mallowpaw turned her head to see a warrior yelling at Bumblestar about her medicine cat choices. Risingstorm responded in an equally loud and aggressive voice. Hollowpaw snapped at the first warrior, and then Bumblestar stepped in, confining the tom to camp. The second disruption of the meeting- third, if you counted Bumblestar's trance.
Mallowpaw stood up and headed to the apprentice den. She needed time to
be bitter process the meeting.
