Cricket's pelt bristled, but not in aggression directed towards Sunset. She just didn't like thinking about their old home. "Territory-wise it was similar to here. There was a mountain, a large cave, pine forest, different areas." She started.

"But there were groups of cats there who referred to themselves in similar ways to the clans here." Notch chimed in.

Cricket nodded. "They made things difficult. So we left." She turned to groom some of the burrs from her thick, fluffy tail. "We wanted to find a place away from there that was more peaceful. And here we are..." She added the last part with a low growl of annoyance. From one fire to another.

Sunset scoffed at Marsh's words. You, tough? She sneered and looked him up and down, making it obvious that Sunset thought he was too weak.

Notch flicked Marsh's ear with the tip of his tail. "You don't need to prove anything to anycat." He meowed sternly. "Only weaker cats feel the need to prove themselves. Strong cats know their own strength, and are confident." He ignored Cricket's snicker.

Cricket didn't comment. She and Notch had their differences of opinion, and this was one of them. "Confidence is all well and good, but it means nothing if you can't back it up with claws and fangs." She muttered to Sunset. She didn't want to disrupt...whatever was going on here between Notch and this kit. Clearly, Notch was taking it upon himself to teach this kit, and she didn't want to get pulled into some kind of parenting dispute with him.

Sunset rolled her eyes at the kit and bared her teeth at Marsh before acknowledging Cricket. She smirked and headed to the designated resting area, twitching her tail at Cricket as a goodbye.

Marsh showed his teeth, growling back. This isn't over! He yowled, then sat down. He gazed up at Notch. Can we eat? He asked.

Notch let out a purr, touching his nose to Marsh's head. "You are a courageous young kit standing up to bigger cats. I have no doubt in your strength." He meowed. "But, don't forget what I said. Strong cats don't need to prove their strength to others."

He nodded at Marsh's question. "Yes. Since you've traveled by yourself, I assume you've hunted before?" Notch had no intentions of letting Marsh hunt by himself. But he didn't want to treat the kit like the average kit his age either.

Cricket waved her tail goodbye at Sunset, somewhat disappointed that she was now on her own with Notch and Marsh. She grumbled to herself. But when Marsh brought up hunting, she brightened up. This would be the perfect excuse to get away. "I'll start." She meowed, standing up and walking off on her own. She flicked Notch's shoulder with her tail as she left.

Notch watched Cricket walk off before turning back to Marsh. He nodded. "Good. I would expect nothing less." He meowed, turning to leave as well. He touched his tail to Marsh's shoulder. "Let's go then." He meowed as he padded away from the cave. Once there was enough distance between them and the cave, he opened his mouth to drink in the scents, stopping when he smelled prey.

"Marsh," he whispered, flicking his tail for the kit to come up beside him, "what do you smell?"
