BURNINGNIGHT THE AFTERMATH

lyrebird's lullaby, the collector, shadow fiend
@Luminous @Rose @wolfie
when the apprentice blundered up to him, gaze upturned to stare, his breath caught like lead in his throat. pigeonpaw was unabashed, unfiltered, and the energy hit him like a tidal wave. he was pretty sure he had been extinguished in one breath, snuffed out like a flame. blinking, it took a long moment for the words to settle in.
your fur pattern is very pretty.
"oh. thank you," he mumbled, bashful, voice hardly a whisper- and before he knew it, lostspark had joined their convoy. he hurried along after the patrol, plumed tail curling around himself conservatively. the territory stretched into tall pines.
tormentil and chickweed. the description grouse had given rung in burningnight's mind carefully. he sniffed around the underbrush for a while before locating some of the plants aforementioned. he carefully plucked them in his jaws and turned with his wide-eyed gaze to stare at his patrol.

The happy little chant soon died on the enforcer's maw, exhaustion slowly but surely seeping in. He hadn't been given the autho- atol- permission to go out and about with his duties for a quarter moon and honestly? That battle had taken it out of him, yo. He was panting already, and he was only digging. Digging! He could dig more than this when he was a kit, for star's sake!
Still, Silverlark did not let this revelation put him down. He just needed to get into shape again! And that meant a lot of exercise. Like digging. Sure, it was going to take a bit, but it sure beat hiding away in his nest doing nothing all day. Nothing against Mosster, but being a patient was his least favorite job in ShadowClan. Ever. Being an apprentice was more fun, and even that was a load of sitting around waiting for his mentors to abandon him before he gave up and started seeking out other mentors to train him in their stead. Looking back on those days with his newfound freedom was... an experience. It certainly gave those sour days a brand new shine.
Mistlewhisker's words catching his attention, the gray tom turned towards her as they finished burying the body. Hmph. Good riddance on that stupid ShadowClan killer. No need for icky badgers like that around here. Hmph, hmph.
The deputy's compliment coaxed a small head tilt on the tom, a giddy grin on his face despite his tiredness. Yayayayayay! He had gotten praised! Oh good good. He thought he wasn't a very good enforcer lately. What with... getting all banged up and then getting all banged up again. Plus... he knew. He always did. He wasn't the smarterest. Not very good of an asset for ShadowClan when there was nothing to kill. But! But. If his friend thought he was a good enforcer, that was good for him!
"Nah nah nah! Just happy to helps, Whisk! It's yous guys that are always so on tops of everything, ya dig? And look. Look. I knows you got changed in rank. Yous deputy now and all. But yous know what? You knows what? Yous still one of us enforcers in here," the tom chirped, lifting his paw while tapping his chest.
He didn't have the heart to openly state it as it was. To say that his friend had been demoted. From enforcer to deputy. Obviously Dawnstar had picked her because she had faith in Whisk - as she should - but everyone knew that deputies really just sent out patrols. The enforcers were the ones that kept everything running, mmmhmm. Or at least... that was what his grandpa's old mate would say. And she would know. She had been an enforcer until she died. Horrible cat, but decent at her job, he guessed. But Whisk? Nope. Whisk was one hundred percent awesome. He just needed her to know that too, mmmhmmm.

Mistlewhisker noted Silverlark's exhaustion as he continued digging, the deputy looking at him with an air of slight concern. He should definitely rest, after this. Once they were done, Mistlewhisker sighed and lifted a jet black paw to give it a good grooming.
Silverlark continued yapping, and Mistlewhisker was more than happy to listen. When he brought up her promotion and affirmed he still thought of her as an honorary Enforcer, she smiled. "Thank you, Silverlark. I will admit, I miss seeing you and the others around." Well, they were always around, but it wasn't the same. "I hope you know that I do not consider myself above the Enforcers. I want to have a partnership with you all and Hawkbite." She just wished Hawkbite would see it that way too...
Now that they were done, Mistlewhisker hesitated. She knew Silverlark should go back to camp and rest, but... for some reason, this felt like a finality. Like if she went back to camp now, she'd never have the chance to go out with him again. The former Enforcer shook her head to clear the thoughts away. That was ridiculous. "Shall we head back?" She hummed, pushing herself to her paws and waiting for Silverlark to give the all-set.
Once they were ready, Mistlewhisker and Silverlark padded back to camp, side by side.

a large scarred dark grey cat with minimal white markings and grey eyes
with the truly rather annoying rule of 1. no apprentices out of camp alone and 2. no one leaving camp without enforcer permission and a three cat patrol out of the way, rookfire was a enforcer now, so he might as well lean into the priviledge for once, well not really since they were three either way and two enforcer at that...but lets pretend for once, rookfire lead roachflare and sleepysunrise out into the territory. the enforcer felt he had been too caught up in change, mostly the promotion to enforcer and trying to wrap his head around that, realising he was a tom, and also willing his shoulder to stop being broken sooner rather than later, and now he had catching up to do. mostly with voluntary patrols to be specific. he always got a certain kick out of the knowledge he was doing more than was asked of him, well not so much anymore since this was more or less on his list of duties now, but especially in his apprentice days he had been quite the prolific patroller and herb collector if he could say so himself. "i was thinking" he began, head turning to the right to face the cats following over his shoulder "roachflare goes with me and we hunt down some herbs, sleepysunrise you gather or catch whatever, i dont care, just dont go away too far." the memory of mirepaw being abducted mere feet from rookfire and lostspark made his fur bristle. he'd honestly prefer they both go with him, but this wasnt even a official patrol and sleepysunrise was an enforcer so he didnt feel it would be fair to place these limits upon the younger warrior.
roachflare followed the enforcer without complaint, he had helped train his very cat and it was a bit weird that he was a rank above him now, but he wasnt one to complain, simply happy to leave camp and be left alone for the most part. roachflare wasnt a big talker, not with strangers, and rookfire seemed to have similar traits in that manner, having never indirectly forced roach to keep up with useless small talk. herbs..eh. not really his cup of tea, but he could deal with it.
[ short post cuz im so tired oh my god. @Estelle - sleepy ]
(wow this just made me realise how large my temporary rook header is )
She had agreed to a patrol, not to be ordered around. Her ripped ear twitched at Rookfire’s command, very well aware of their difference in age, yet occupying the same rank. She spoke not nor did she move beyond that one flick of her ear, the silent acknowledgment of his words. Though only a select few were allowed to order her around, she would not complain about not being hounded. She could hunt and gather herbs, it ought not be an issue for the ten moon old. She had been on far more herb patrols than any other sort of patrol besides, perhaps she might take this chance to practice her hunting some more. If she came across any herbs she would gather them on the way. Setting off as Rookfire and Roachflare did too, Sleepysunrise moved within the opposite direction, pawsteps silent on the forest floor and she kept to the shadows of the world.

『 彡 ➜ @Rose @Luminous @redshiftreign 』 | sorry y'all ! ;0; time got away from me - didnt realize how long yall been waitin' Don't stray too far.
Well, that sure sounds like a dare if Gutspaw ever heard one! Besides, it needed to grab a few more cobwebs ,, (really a shame there were no acorns around this late in the season.) The older apprentice followed swiftly behind bite's patrolmates, fluffy tail swishing back and forth as its icy blue irises drag alongside the landscape. It was beginning to adjust ever so slowly, a growing fondness for the dense canopy of conifer trees. The darkness that blankets the ground was a comfort. A reminder that the abyss always awaits, one pawstep behind. (your shadow that follows you, the only consistent friend -)
The black tabby sniffed around, sticking its nose in whatever crook and nanny teeth came across. Which did mean it got a faceful of sticky chickweed! Gutspaw let out a startled yelp, jerking back with a deep frown. Not cool, random herbs. It dealt enough with Goops stickiness. With a small shake of its head, it shuffled about in search of a large leaf. Once discovered, it would use the leave to wrap it around a clump of chickweed and pull it up.
Afterwards, it searched until it discovered a patch of tort..tortment..... whatever it was. Gutspaw picked it up, mouth now full. No new trinkets for them. At least, that was what it figured. Something the apprentice hadn't quite picked up was the absence of ,, birdsong. It was silent — as if it in the middle of leaf-bare.
It blinked slowly, beginning to trot back towards bite's patrol members. However, a sudden movement caught its eye - a flash of bright lavender. Slowly, slowly, the object drifted down to the ground. Gutspaw's eyebrows furrowed in deep confusion, letting out a small hmmrgh before stepping closer. Cautiously, it reached out and poked the bright mysterious thing. Maybe it was an omen. Sucks to suck, it now had dibs. Whatever it was felt WEIRD but in a good way. Perfect for bite's nest.
Gutspaw dropped the herbs it was holding before grabbing ahold of the ,,, weird string that was connected to it. It loosely wrapped the strange object around its neck a couple of times before picking its herbs back and continuing back to its group.

Short grey molly with a darker stripe and amber eyes

Alright so that was chickweed smelt like.
The grey apprentice took a moment to sniff at the two plants that she had found, taking in their scent before continuing and trying to decipher the smell of chickweed among the other plants, and was quickly rewarded with another mouthful of the sticky herb.
Nice, she had found four herbs in total! But you see, Pigeonpaw was an expert trinket collector - she could carry at least this many more!!
She went after tormantail next, keeping in mind the description but also catching sight of what Burningnight had collected. Hmm. Hmmmmmmmmm. Ok, so Pigeonpaw knew she would have a way easier time finding the herbs if she got to sniff the plants first... so sneaky time it was! She hardly needed all of the stealth that Owlthroat had taught her, it would be over the top even for her, but she quickly approached what the warrior had gathered up, and breathed in the scent before skipping away to search for them herself (but she still wanted to stay close enough to 'sparks). And as expected, it didn't
take long before she returned with the tormentil.
Alright, now she was at max carrying-capacity.
( Low resolution patrol post because my desktop broke and this laptop is so slow :c )
Lostspark blinked down at the apprentice that looked so much like her. Huh. She'd never noticed before now. "You do look like me." She paused, considered. "And I look like you, I suppose." The rest of the patrol Kat was unable to pay attention to, her motivation is down in the dumps currently, so Lostspark merely headed to the nearest clump of chickweed and nipped four of those, followed by her picking up a singular tormentil as well.

Mistlewhisker lead Sharpfrost out into the territory, the deputy having decided that while Mossfreckle's admonishment was fine, Mistlewhisker wanted to patrol the territory a bit anyway, so she figured Sharpfrost would come along. Sharpfrost's sense of duty was clear, and she wasn't in as much trouble as this outing might indicate.
"It is frustrating when patrol mates do not attend to their duties." She meowed. "Your effort is appreciated, even if you broke the rules. Today you and I will patrol the territory and check for predators." Or bodies. "Predators and murderers are why the rule was set in place. I hope you keep that in mind for the future."
With that, she continued striding through the forest, pausing every so often to sniff a possible den before moving on.
Sharpfrosts head was bowed as she and the deputy treked through the muddy brush. She sniffed around, or not smelling anything out of the ordinary.
( Is Dawnstars latest post about Sharpfrost?)

with one more sharp not in sleepysunrises direction, rookfire flicked his tail at roachflare, briefly brushing pelts with the younger warrior as they wandered off in search of herbs. "you can look for some cobwebs and yarrow. i assume you know what cobwebs look like but yarrow is this tall-ish plant with white or yellow flowers in a sorta flat constellation, the stems are greyish green, pretty sturdy and got small light hairs on em." the enforcer explained, not letting himself think about the plants and the comfort of knowing things most other warriors didnt, for too long, and rather turned to look around the undergrowth surroundings a small stream. most of the plants he had selected to collect liked moist to wet soil; dock, chickweed and coltsfoot did, while dandelion might as well be found here or anywhere else they had come across. a quick glance at roachflare and a few steps later, rookfire picked up the scent of chickweed, one of his favourite herbs yet one he had not used to this day, he just..kinda liked the way it looked and smelled.
[ rolled: 10, 10 for chickweed ]
he gently picked a bit of the fragile plant, letting his gaze linger on the way the light reflected on the smooth deltoid shaped leaves, before speeding up to a painful trot to catch up to roachflare.
_____________________
roachflare had been looking around for the most part, trying to not pay as much attention to what the other two cats on this patrol were doing, but rather the plants around, he had the most minimal idea of what any of the plants rookfire had spoken of earlier were, but with the short description he had given him, the tortie was sure he could fine something of use.
[ rolled: 1, 14 for yarrow ]
he found something with vaguely, what had rookfire said? flat?, shaped flowers and it looked pretty green so he decided to gather one of it.. he did, however, have even less of an idea of what part of the plant he should gather, so instead of picking two, the tom fit one stem with most of the plant attached into his mouth and decided that it was enough.
[ rolled: 17, 06, 20 for cobwebs ]
rookfire had caught up to him (far too quietly for a injured cat, but perhaps his training had been good) somewhere between finding a pretty nice looking cobweb, all silky and interesting looking, and roachflare jumping in surprise and dropping the cobweb to roll around in soil and leaves, making it unusable. mildly upset at both his own reaction and the enforcer just coming out of nowhere, the warrior didnt pay as much attention as before and almost walked into his last find of the day. he turned to show off his web, but the last he could see of the older warrior was the white tip of his remaining ear. oh well.

[ rolled: 20, 16, 17 for dock, dandellion ]
after his pointedly unplanned mishap of surprising roachflare, rookfire had returned to look for the other plants on his mental list, now focussing on dock. back at a different spot along the stream he stepped into what he had thought was still grass but turned out to be very slimy soil, earning himself wet muddy paws but also the realisation that he had almost stepped on a dandellion, hidden behind thick blades of grass and buzzing with insects.
humming quietly (what was the use of a herb patrol if he couldnt be a bit louder than for a hunting one) the enforcer passed through the stream, washing mud off his paws and enjoying the cool water on warmed up pelt. since dock lacked most smell unless broken off, he held his head high to spot some by vision rather than smell for once, briefly cursing the presumably dead thunderclanner that was the reason for having to turn his head far too much to look to the side. evenly green leaves, almost ovate shaped yet a bit oddly curled, making them look less ovate and more so like a animal had taken unorganised bites out of the sides of it, came into view by the time he heard roachflare approach from behind. this particular plant looked pretty good, already way past blooming and large enough to make rookfire question his folding and carry skills.
[ @Estelle will roll for rooks last 3 slots next post : D ]
[ total for this post; 2 dock, 1 dandellion, 2 chickweed. 1 yarrow, 2 cobweb ]
