the battleground had turned on him in an instant. he had expected this, he had prepared for this. with each hunk of mud flung his way, the mottled tom focused in on every movement around him. he planted his paws sturdy into the ground and felt his pelt prickle.

chaos. chaos and confusion, the lot of it. a giddy laugh bubbled up in his chest, eyes wide with mirth. this! this was what he lived for! this fake, slighted war. adrenaline roared in his ears as he assessed the battlefield. his head snapped towards motion, a greyscale tom slinking off into the apprentice den and leaving a meteor of mud rocketing towards grouse. the young healer dropped low and let it soar over him, before springing out and twisting forwards- directly into the path of bleedingpaw's throw. a dramatized gasp escaped him, and he shook mud from his fur. "a hero, are you?" he roared, a grin on his face, "good throw. lets hope you can handle it as well as you throw it."

that was when he heard wispypaw's chiding voice. his head snapped to stare at the sightless she, and he circled around her flank, keeping a good distance. "get in line, heh, you and everyone under the sun wants to drown me in mud right about now."

he circled to stand in the middle of the fray, seeing a dark pelt slink into view. she might have thought it an accident, but the ball of mud he flung her way was very, very intentional. right as sleepysunrise decided to stop being a stick in the mud (heh) and join- if only in defense of herself and her brother, he circled to put himself between those two and the deputy.

his tail tip twitched, watching both groups of enemy carefully. mistle was taking her sweet time deciding her move- either she was going to shut this down, or go for mud. he wasn't sure which yet, but he wanted to be ready for either. if he wanted this plan to work.

and right as mistle threw mud, he saw sleepy's arm surge forwards with her own heap of mud.

purrrfect.

grouse dropped low and surged forwards, sliding across the mud and spinning out while the two inadvertedly threw at eachother. what, did they think he's never had a mud battle before? hah! no, this was grouse. this was his domain.

twisting to face bleedingpaw, he charged and scouped up a good paw of mud. "you want to be a hero?" he cried, feigned dramatics, "then die like one!"

and with a powerful downstroke, he attempted to practically dunk the mud onto the blonde furball, grinning wildly at his insane maneuvering. he was genuinely impressed with himself, for once.
