So, she hadn’t been allowed to go to the raid. Bummer. She wished that she had gone, wished that she had performed well enough for Dawnstar to recognize her efforts and deem her a warrior after all was said and done. Wishful thinking, of course. Midnightpaw always had her head in the stars, and when she was pulled down from such bliss, she was always disappointed.

No point in lingering on that disappointment, though, when she could chase that prize herself and catch it between her teeth. So, here she was, approaching the enforcer that she trusted the most around here– “Hawkbite?”

The black furred molly shifted from her left paw to her right before she straightened up, lifted her nose and squared her shoulders to display some sort of confidence in herself. “I was wondering if you’d be willing to host my assessment.” Was that too serious? ‘Host my assessment’? Oh, whatever, he’ll get the point.

His interest was piqued by the apprentice approaching him. He'd always kept an eye on this one and her training. She always seemed on top of that and with the recent teaching of how to deal with foxes that seemed to infest their territory at all times, he'd really been drawn to her. The question that escaped her made his ears perk with further interest. Midnightpaw was ready for her assessment at last? ShadowClan was due for some warriors, so, of course he'd accept this task.

"We can do it today, then," Hawkbite spoke, gesturing for the feline to follow him into the territory. He'd found a new spot to do his training and assessments. The move wasn't easy on the clan, but they'd manage to get through it. "The assessment is simple. Outmatch me in a spar and you pass," Hawkbite spoke as they walked.

"Only rule is don't attempt any killing blows. Any questions?"

Hawkbite halted the duo at his spot. It was a slightly muddier clearing beneath some pine trees that were far enough apart to show the sky above them. He'd purposefully picked this spot for training so he could keep an eye on what time of day it was. The shadowy territory didn't make that easy sometimes.

Midnightpaw nodded along as he spoke, leading them to wherever her assessment would take place. Sparring with Hawkbite was a daunting idea, but she’d be willing to drive through it–or at least try her very best to! She wasn’t sure if she’d be able to best Hawkbite of all of the enforcers, but she supposed it was worth the shot to become a warrior, right?

“No killing blows, got it.” Not that she was thinking of trying anything like that, and it made her wonder why he even had to specify that no killing blows would be allowed during the assessment… Maybe she’d ask later.

The black furred apprentice hopped a few paces back, pressing her paws into the mucky dirt below to take on a preparative stance… She would have attacked first, but she wanted him to get ready, too! That would be fair, wouldn’t it?

Satisfied with how they were going to start, Hawkbite got down into a battle stance. His ears were flattened and his gaze burned into Midnightpaw with a challenge. "Ready when you are," Hawkbite spoke, his muscles flexing beneath his pelt. It was time for Midnightpaw to prove she was warrior material.

Midnightpaw’s tail flicked left and right behind her.. Oh, he was to attack first, of course. She never liked making the first move, but she supposed it only made sense.

Her desire for recognition for her efforts as an apprentice, drove her paws forward in a furious sprint, aiming for the tom head-on. Until the very last moment she dashed to her left, to which she aimed to lunge for his side, in hopes of bowling the tom over entirely.

Hawkbite let a small smirk creep across his face as he watched Midnightpaw sprint at him. Surely, the apprentice knew better. He'd barely the time to think that when she curved her movements entirely and was suddenly coming at him from the side. Hawkbite moved quickly, hopping backwards the best he could, but getting grazed by her dash. It made him stumble, but he didn't go down. He'd quickly find his footing and spread his legs apart so he could stand another blow if she happened to turn around at him again.

His eyes would flash, focusing on Midnightpaw and her next move. For now, he'd play defense. He wanted to see what she could do.

Well, he certainly didn’t go down, but he stumbled. She was quick to follow up on her own attack, seeing that he was taking up a more defensive position–she lifted her paw, although kept her claws sheathed as she brought her paw downwards, her entire body following the movement to put more power behind the blow, hoping to bring her paw cracking down against his muzzle or, even better, the centre of his head… But she’d be happy for anything at all!

Hawkbite felt the blow to his face, it had some power to it, sending stars into his vision. Whoa. She'd definitely grown in a strong cat, much different from the apprentice he'd met a few moons ago. It was a hit that gave Midnightpaw the advantage she needed to knock him down if she dared.

Winded–he's winded! Midnightpaw pushed through the initial shock from that realization, bouncing back onto her hind paws to pivot herself to stand parallel to the enforcer. As soon as all four of her paws touched the ground, she attempted to slam her body, her entire weight, with as much force as she could muster, against his side–once again, hoping to knock him off of his paws.

That was it. The Commander stumbled then found himself on the ground. Midnightpaw had won the spar. Usually, Hawkbite would get up and keep fighting, but that wasn't what this fight was about. Midnightpaw only had to demonstrate what she was made up to pass and Hawkbite accepted that.

"Okay, okay," Hawkbite got to his paws, stopping the fight before the apprentice could keep going. "You did it, you passed. Congrats Midnightpaw," The Commander spoke, offering the apprentice a fairly content smile. She'd done it. She was on her way to becoming a warrior next meeting. "You'll make a fine warrior."
