grousepaw heard xeyr name over the noise of shadowclan camp, head lifted and ears pinned to skim the camp. when amber eyes settled on the shadowy figure of his ex-mentor, strained associate, now-deputy, he trotted over, tail swaying languidly behind him.

where she would have had a snarky response to being asked to get herbs if needed, grouse merely laughed to herself. because, as much as she wanted to say, just because i'm a meddie doesn't make me incapable of huntin'- that would be a lie. because grouse was an abysmal hunter, and with the herb stores looking as pathetic as they were after all the frantic back and forth tending to injuries, he saw the urgency of doing exactly that.

"aye aye," he replied with mock reverence, flashing a playful grin as he turned to his patrolmates. birdpaw, huh? one of the ark-kits. god there were so many of 'em. and goopywhisker? goopy was pretty cool. maybe a bit too much of a suckup to mistle, but grouse couldn't blame 'em. then, he turned to appraise gutspaw, amber eyes appraising it.

"you have a cool name," he said, grinning. "alright, i'm ready to roll out if everyone else is."

Yellowtwist arrived to a patrol he led. So he was NOO. It's fine, he'd just throw Rufflepaw over the border then go tell Dawnstar that. Wait, he physically couldn't. Whatever, Sunflowerface was just as insultable as every other cat.

If that nerd wasn't enough, he was with the former enforcer who lost his job by throwing a tantrum. This was sure to go well.

Then there was his apprentice. several levels below the other two in stupidity but. Still, not ideal. He still hated all three of them despite never having held a conversation with one.

Shrewstep was right behind Bloomingblaze with his offering of slightly grubby, hopefully yarrow bouncing along on its roots behind him. The three plants might have gotten a bit battered, maybe coated in a few pine needles, but it was intact enough that hopefully Mossfreckle wouldn't be out for his blood. He'd like to stay alive for the moment, get to lord his enforcer status over Fiercefire for just a teensy bit longer. And for that, he needed to keep all of his patrols and duties in order. @IDIOTICBEAN101 @Goopysharkboi @ellie

A tall cat ducked into the camp, hoping that the two apprentices were close in suit. It wasn't very hot, but Mudslide felt like tearing her own fur off. The sun practically drowned her fur, almost making it look a bright odd orange. "Mistlewhisker." She called, her voice barely reaching a yell. "Just finished." A long pause opened up in the air like a cavity after that. She let her words ring in the deputy's head as well as hers before continuing. "All is calm. Both Squirrel and Grackle.... Were... Efficient." Her voice had gotten cracky but that was the norm when reporting for these patrols. There was always something that made her sound like a goose on steroids.

She then bowed, lowering her head to the ground and raising her tail up high. It wasn't a sacred gesture, but Mudslide liked to do it, it made whatever she was doing feel important and worth doing again. That's probably why she liked patrols so much, minus the "exploring" aspect.

One... White claws began to tear through the ground. Not kneading. No, shredding. A level of frustration had cracked through her mask of logic. Now she wanted to kill this cat. Golden rays of light scattered through the trees like the needy claws of a hungry kit. Mudslide flicked her ears as a snarl threatened to break through her maw. No. No way. She was fine, she wasn't about to kill anycat, not over stupid stuff like this.

Two... Big deep breaths made her chest rise and fall and ache. She blinked away sparkling sunlight and steadied her blue gaze. Right, she had a cat to find.

Three, one two three, one two three, one two three. The irregular rhythm of multicoloured paws on packed dirt. She made her way to the medicine cat and flicked her lengthy tail in greeting. Composure. That's all she needed. That's all she wanted, some order to her horrible life. It's not horrible anymore, she reminded herself. Those who wronged you are long gone, your life is better. Shadowclan has found you. You're only missing one link, that's all. But you'll find her. You'll find her.

Why was she getting so worked up over a patrol? She'd never been late to one before, and she wasn't about to start now. Plus, she had to tell her friend all about what she saw, what she wished he could've seen. He was counting on her. She wouldn't let him down.

"Mossfreckle." Mudslide said, working her jaw as she prepared for a mouthful. "My patrol has... Has fallen. Reassign?" She asked. Add other cats? Let her go alone (please)? Let her go with Roachflare (even better)? She wasn't sure what the medicine cat had in mind, but she wasn't holding her breath. She'd do that for nocat. With some exceptions.

(I don't know why I made this so detailed, GAH SORRY. it was fun to write though)

With a nod to both apprentice and warrior, Nightshiver gave them a soft smile between the mice in her jaws and began leading them back to camp. The trail felt like a bit of a search, but luckily, they had remained on the correct path and were making efficient time back - or at least, efficient enough, it felt as though they were cutting it close. Entering back into camp, glancing beside her to see Tuftedtusk and Quillpaw, Nightshiver approached the ShadowClan deputy with a respectful nod of her head after depositing her prey on the preypile, letting Quillpaw and Tuftedtusk do the same while she went to report.
"Mistle...whisker; we.. were a-able to... catch... well enough... prey. There... we..weren't any.... issues. Quillpaw... did... a fine... job."
She smiled, happy with how well the apprentice performed.

the walk back from the darkwater mire was far less interesting than it was on the way there. with the frog and mouse clamped in his jaws, he's quite proud of himself. looks like mistlewhisker's hunting training was decent .. she may be on his good list. though as he pads up to his mentor, all he offers is a curt nod followed by a short report, "everything was fine." and then he's off to whatever quill does.

The tom followed the two into camp, laying his prey on the pile. "All went well, Mistlewhisker." He rumbled, before moving off to lay in a patch of weak sunlight and groom his pelt.
