It was time to start wrapping up some unfinished training. Mushroompaw was surely growing close to finishing his apprenticeship, or at least hitting the age he needed to become a warrior. Sparrowpelt would have to run through some questions to ensure they were ready to move on, but right now, battle training.

"Mushroompaw, c'mon! We gots some battle training to do!" Sparrowpelt chirped into the Apprentices' Den bright and early that morning. He gave Mushroompaw some time to get ready before moving towards the camp entrance. They'd make their way to the training area before Sparrowpelt would turn to face them.

"So, do you have any training with this yet? Do I need to start from the basics?" Sparrowpelt would speak but also sign to the younger tom. He'd been practicing more lately with the recent hearing loss from his mate. That reminded him about something else, but he'd touch base on that once Mushroompaw provided an answer.

Mushroompaw quickly padded over to his mentor, his fur bristling with excitement. He was going to train again! Hurray! The small apprentide bounced on his paws as the pair walked to the thraining area, his eyes shinning.

Mushroompaw's mouth hung open for a few seconds when his mentor spoke and signed. He smiled and sat down to use his paws. 'Haven't had any battle training yet.'

Sparrowpelt smiled a bite. Alright. Starting fresh wasn't a bad thing. He could work with that, for sure. The larger tom nodded in understanding before signing back. "Hey Mushroompaw, I just have to thank you for something," he began, shuffling a little closer to him.

"Drizzlecloud lost her hearing in our last raid and if I hadn't learned how to sign fluently with you, then-" Sparrowpelt had to pause for a moment, a smile forming on his muzzle as he studied his apprentice's expressions. "-then I wouldn't be able to comfort or help her during her time of adjustment. You've taught me something amazing. I appreciate you," he finished, setting his paws down for a moment. After a small inhale to compose himself, he got back to the task at hand.

Battle training!

"So, first things first," Sparrowpelt started up again, not wanting to let an emotional topic dwell too long. "Learning defense is the most important to be successful in a fight. You can't fight long if you go down fast, right? So, defense 101."

"Watch your opponents eyes. That's the first giveaway to where they'll try to hit you. The next is watch where they're running. If they're coming from your left, then you'll move away from that direction. Pretty simple when explaning it, right?" Sparrowpelt gave him a moment to answer. "Harder to follow through, though. Give it a shot!"

Sparrowpelt chirped, getting into a battle stance and prepping to move forward. With a glance at Mushroompaw's right shoulder, he darted forward. His paw reached out to tap Mushroompaw's shoulder.

Mushroompaw leaned forward a little bit to listen to what his mentor was saying. 'Poor Drizzlecloud!' He thought with sympathy, his tail twitching softly. His heart melted at these words, but happiness swirled inside of him. 'I was able to do something good? I did that..?'


Oh- Emotional time is over then. Mushroompaw followed,
his tail lashing excitedly. Battle training! Move away from the direction your opponent is coming from. Easy enough, right? He nodded at his mentor, trying to copy their stance. The eyes. Look for the eyes. 'Right!' Mushroompaw thought, springing away from his mentor. He did feel a little bit of Sparrowpelt's paw though.

The tom could feel his paw brush the apprentices' shoulder just slightly. Good, but needed to be faster.

"Good first try. Some things you can keep in mind when playing defense is to be fast! You can dodge with a little hop, roll, or do a combination of both," Sparrowpelt signed, but also spoke. The large warrior would then demonstrate what he meant by doing them in that order: hop to the side, roll, and dodge and roll. "When you roll away from your opponent, you want to keep your legs close to your body so can get back up on your paws very quickly!" Sparrowpelt explained, demonstrating that one again. It was the hardest move to accomplish -- in his opinion -- when you're just starting out. It took some time to get used to being fast, but also neat so cats could get back to their paws quickly.

Once Mushroompaw had a couple attempts at practicing that move, Sparrowpelt would give him a little sign to indicate he was ready to practice it for real. The warrior would launch forward in a way that would force Mushroompaw to roll away from him.
