Peachkit watches wide-eyed as the other kits start organizing for a race somewhere. Things move fast around here. He's tempted, for sure, though faintly he understands he's probably outmatched—mostly he's just reluctant to let Snowkit out of his sight in case anyone else starts declaring best friend-dom for her (though she did just do that, herself, for the entire group...Peachkit tells himself she's just being polite because a litte guy can have some delusion, as a treat).

However. Chasmkit's terribly little—just a bit younger than he is, but right now that time really counts. Peachkit's positive her queen wouldn't want her leaving the nursery just yet. So there's two big problems he's noticed: someone has to follow Snowkit so she doesn't feel like her race idea wasn't received well, but someone also has to stay back with Chasmkit, so she doesn't feel left out for being small.

"Racing's for harebrains," Peachkit declares flippantly, though it's just an excuse to plant himself next to Chasmkit. Plenty of the other kits will be heading out to make the race fun for Snowkit, and Olivekit's offered to bring something back for Chasmkit, so if he stays here then they've got all their bases covered. Everything is fair and nobody is left out.

"You guys come back when you're done being dummies."

She purred and chased Oleaderkit, the wind blowing her fur tufts in one direction. She yowled with laughter to the breeze. "Wait for me" she yelled as she followed Oleanderkit. "Come on Snowkit, Chasmkit, and Peachkit" she yelled behind her back.

Ivykit was bored. no one wanted to talk to her or play with her...not that she ever tried to play with the other kits. She didn't think many kits liked her that much. not that anyone ever told her that... but she just got that general vibe. she usually wanted to listen to the elder's stories, but they seemed to be sleeping ALL the time.
She put her head on her paws and pouted.

Chasmkit wanted a quail from the pile and shouted, "Please bring a quail back for me!" Surely, one of the racing kits should hear her. She looked over to Peachkit and calmly meowed, "How are you Peachkit?"

Life in the nursery was boring. Hollowkit wanted to leave, to be out in the forest with the big cats, but no, kits weren't allowed out into the forest and were only just barely tolerated in the camp clearing. Honestly, why couldn't he just be a warrior now? Maybe he could convince one of the warriors that he's actually one of them... if they don't listen he'll just tattle on them to his sister, she'll bite them or something probably.

"I'm...!" He wants the answer be something cool and impressive (that Oleanderkit sure left an impression—is Peachkit feeling a little jealous?), but nothing comes to mind. Peachkit clears his throat and offers a quick shrug. "I'm fine. Not in a racing mood, is all. You won't catch me tripping over my feet and into some warrior's meal," he scoffed. There's some truth in this, certainly, but he's still mostly concerned with making sure everyone has a playmate. "How are you?" Peachkit returns the question, peeking out at what little of the clearing can be seen from where they're sat.

"And I'm sorry, I guess, about swatting your ears like that. Didn't know if you could hear us." He adds on impulse.

Chasmkit's tail flicked slightly as she replied, "I am mostly okay, Peachkit. Do you have any family?..... I do have a family. But, my mother is still a warrior. I don't know why she still has that rank. I have four siblings and they are nowhere to be found..."

"Some," he says absently; right off the bat it doesn't seem like family is a very interesting topic to Peachkit. "My da and his son—my brother, I guess, but he's not from my litter. I've got some litternates, too. Around." The joys of an NPC family, hyukhyuk."Da doesn't come by much, though, obviously. He's a warrior, he's got better things to do." No mention of a mother. Of course, someone must still be nursing this vain little creature, but even then, he spares them no mention. Tough.

Peachkit's face crinkles and he pointedly stakes the topic back onto Chasmkit: "How'd your ma get out of the nursery so quick? Or did she not kit you? How do you get milk?" He scrutinizes the younger kit. He still takes milk whenever he can, so he figures Chasmkit must be in a similar, right? "You are getting milk, yeah?" This question comes tinged with concern, as if he's now worried that this stranger isn't being fed right. He has half a mind to tattle on her ma, but he's not yet sure what for or who to. Maybe he's just getting worked up over nothing.

Fluffy tortoiseshell-and-white tabby she-kit with white spots and distinctive gold-and-blue eyes.

Berrykit shifted in the soft bed of moss and bracken, staring blankly at the nursery wall. The scents of milk and warmth and growth surrounded her, but they failed to make her happy.

Everything hurt. Well, by "everything," she meant her heart. It felt like a really mean cat had sank their teeth into it and snapped it in two. That pain flowed through her body, eating at her flesh and making her feel sick.

Why had everything gone so wrong?

Berrykit remembered being super duper happy. Smiling, laughing, cuddling in the nursery with her family. Everyone in her family. Mama and Papa and Eveningkit and Blossomkit and Hornetkit...

Mama and Hornetkit...

Tears sprang to her beautiful gold-and-blue eyes. Before she could process what was happening, she'd fallen into her nest, lost in a tangle of soft green things that were no longer comforting. Sobs wracked her little fluffy body. Snot ran down her round face.

It just wasn't fair. Berrykit knew that some kits didn't have Mamas, but she had a Mama, and now that Mama was gone. And she had a Hornetkit, but he was gone, too.

Where? Why? No one knew. But they weren't with her anymore.

And she wanted them so badly it hurt.

Berrykit hugged the moss, trying to imagine that it was her whole family. That Mama and Hornetkit were there, curling next to her. That she had everyone she loved...

And that she was okay.

But she wasn't okay. 'Cause they were gone, leaving a space that could never be filled.
