Fennec's Hideaway
@ Constellation
Fennec looked back at the ponderosa pine. So many dotted the forest, but he chose this one to call his home. It was wreathed in ferns, creating the illusion of regularness, but through the ferns, between two thick roots was a dramatic dip in the earth. It was large enough for him to stand, with an earthen bottom and surrounding ferns bending over, creating a dome of nature. When it rained, the ferns always dripped their contents on Fennec's fur, to he dug a little wedge deeper between the roots so he could easily shelter under the tree trunk while still in his little cove. Not to mention, the ponderosa released a aromatic vanilla-like smell anytime summer came around, so his hideaway was always fragranced.
He found his new home as quick as he could, because his last was unforgettable. His sisters, Holly and Swift, and himself had always stayed close together in their former home. They couldn't leave, even if they yearned to. He remembered the same flash of Swift's eyes and the grin of his mother and father, Holly's tail streaking away and the dust settling. His past was not to ever be uncovered, only in his mind would he remember. He couldn't push the memories to the back of his head, because this was almost half of his memory: Mother, Father, Swift Holly, Searching, Rocks, Fight they would always be stuck in his mind. He could never forget.
Fennec pressed his nose to the ponderosa pine tree as ferns tickled his sides. Like he had thought before. The pine would produce a sweet exterior smell, but it's pine needles could potentially wound. Like his mother. But not to mention, pine trees were all in all harmless survivors. His mom was more like a fox, graceful and nimble and sometimes evencute, but extremely hostile and horrible towards cats.
Fennec sat down and breathed in the smell of the sap and the perfume of the pines. How could nature create anything so beautiful? It was amazing: Shed pinecone sin the winter and cease it's sap smell, are through snow and frost, and in summer grow back pinecones and release its smell. In a way, Fennec was a pinecone. Pinecones only abandoned their waxy outside when immersed in fire. Only then they can grow into a pinecone. Without fire, pinecones would never blossom. He was a pinecone, before he was immersed the fire of his past, he was dormant and unblooming. But when sparks were kindled into an inferno, he grew to be a strong pine tree, better than ever. The flames hurt him, but they also fostered him to become stronger.
No wonder why he liked pine trees.

Timid cautiously made her way through the territory. Or, what she thought it was. The small she cat sometimes found herself stumbling around without noticing her surroundings. All she could see was her fears; small critters, snakes, larger cats--anything that was practically considered dangerous in her eyes. Timid didn't like being a hunter within the Syndicate--those cats were mean. They took her for granted. She wanted out desperately, but she was also scared. There were fighters--and guards, not to forget to mention the commander. She had deep respect for all of them. Even the healers, who were considered brave than she would ever be. All in all, Timid knew she was the most frightened cat that ever walked the Syndicate grounds.
So, why was she there in the first place? This was something that the she cat could not figure out for herself. Sure, she was born from two kittypets, and all she knew was that she was found along the border of the Syndicate. Healthy...looked to be strong, so she was taken in. Her providers were very disappointed that she was not all they thought her to be. She took on the appearance of a kit, even though she did her training and was considered to be a full on hunter. But, the height she lacked, due to her legs. And, the fact that she was made a hunter? She was still considered useful to the Syndicate. If she weren't, she was pretty sure that the cats would waste no time to devour her.
Back in the territory, Timid had lost her prey. Chasing after a robin, but lost sight of it. However, she kept its scent in her nostrils, so she trailed it along. Never had she thought she would lose it again. Now, she was further from the territory than she needed to be. And, she began to hyperventilate at the sudden thought. For Timid, the small golden cat did not like to be far than where she was suppose to be. She was given one task. One that she had to complete daily. Hunt. All other hunts were accomplished. She would bring back shrews, or voles, and if they were lucky--a rabbit. But, the Syndicate held scarce meals. And, they did not believe in a higher power. Although, Timid liked to think there is a higher power, and whenever she did pray to them, she would bring back bountiful of meals. If there wasn't a higher power--why was she blessed in such ways?
That was another time for her to think. At the moment she was panicking. She was scared, whimpering slightly as she lowered herself to the ground. She never truly been far from The Dusk Syndicate. Especially in an open area that looked so...dangerous. Her eyes briefly glanced up, catching sight of ponderosa pine trees. Everything smelled like pine here--it almost made her sneeze. Her nose twitched, but she continued to move further, hoping to complete her task, and hopefully go back home...in one piece. Timid knew that anything could happen, which made her even more scared. She padded along, hoping to catch another scent, and she was unaware of the other presence around. Her tail hung limply behind her in a submissive matter, and the only thing going through her head: Don't be scared, Timmy. You'll be fine...Don't be scared...Don't be scared...

Fennec closed his eyes and remembered Holly's face. He sighed, he wished Holly and Swift were still here with him to share his heaven he called home. Here, where it was safe. Here, where prey was almost in waves. With the thought of prey, Fennec distantly remembered the shrew he ate this morning, it sparked a memory in his head: Swift loved shrew the most. despite her bird-indicating name, she had always loved shrews. Not to eat, though. She thought they were the cutest things in the world. Fennec smiled as he recalled the times sister built a small, shrew-proof space out of twigs. The next day, she caught a small shrew by the tail and kept as her 'pet' in the little home she made. Fennec frown as he relived the rest. Mother was mad, and Swift didn't want Tiny the Shrew to be eaten, so she knocked down his home and Tiny the Shrew was set free. Mother got really mad, and Swift didn't look the same again. he opened his eyes and looked at his cream-colored paws. This was not the time to be remembering his past.
He lifted his nose to the air, hoping to catch a whiff of a songbird or something he could catch. At first, a robin's scent lingered in the air, and then an unfamiliar one- a distinctive cat's scent. Now, Fennec had seen all the "Clans", each one had a remarkably distinguished scent, but he had never identified this one before. Fennec stood on his paws and traced the border of his fern enclave, the tips of the fronds touching his ankles. His dark gold eyes searched for a surrounding cat, his ears perked and angled to find ay bit of noise. He flicked them back and forth and side to side and found no sound to hint any more sign of a cat.
"Hello?" He called out, making his tone level so it would indicate he could be approachable but could be hostile is the case came. Surprisingly, his legs were buzzing with an energy. It was excitement, although he would defend his home, he also had a slight want to meet someone new: for fun. "Is anyone there?" he made his tone are gentle this time.

Don't be scared...don't be scared...don't be scared...At the sound of a loud voice, the she cat stood still. Her ears twitched. Did she hear that correctly? Timid felt her body shivering, and she knew, for some odd reason, that this would be the end of her. Some cat was going to find her, and kill her for roaming through their territory. Though...that was a problem. Was this even someone's territory? That was something Timid didn't know, yet she was still scared.
Her small legs began to scamper around, trying to get out of their as fast as she could. Or, at least hide under one of the ponderosa pine trees--yes, she would be safe there. ''Maybe I can dig a hole-'' A pause moment. Her midnight gaze grew wide. ''No! Absolutely not! Dirt is nasty...and I don't wanna be buried alive.'' She cried to herself, so hiding under a pine tree would had been the next perfect idea. This made Timid miserable as she knew that she failed big time. Absolutely. If she went back to the Syndicate, she knew she would be mouse meat. The she cat could had cried, but she didn't want to hear the sound coming after her. Knowing where her whereabouts at.
So, she ran. She looked behind just to make sure the voice wasn't coming after her. She wanted to get away from this area, but she knew she was heading deeper into it. Perhaps, losing her way home. There was a nearby ponderosa tree where she could take refuge under until the cat passed. She refused to be anyone's meal. She was mighty small, and mighty tender. Easy to take advantage of, which made her even more scared. The she cat continued to run, but she wasn't paying attention to where she was going. Instantly, as she looked ahead of her, she saw that she ran into another cat. She tried to stop her paws by skidding into the dirt, but instead it threw her further until she knocked into the other cat. For a second, dizzying overcame her, and her head began pounding. ''Ow...''She muttered, her voice soft, barely above a whisper.

Fennec stayed still and scanned the forest, hoping to spot a tuft of fur or s twig if a whisker that indicated another cat was near. His ears pricked and swiveled as he caught the slightest sound of someone talking, it was very faint and muffled so he couldn't hear what they were saying, but he knew it was another being talking. But we're they talking tosomeone? Fennec passed forward a few more paces, nose twitching to try and catch a stronger hint. He furrowed his brown and slowly sat down, his dark gaze looking straight towards where the voice was.
Then he saw it: a shape bobbing towards him. It was definitely the cat, judging by the way it was running. Although, the cat's head was severed to look behind itself. Fennec blinked and leaned forward. Why was this cat running? It's not like Fennec was chasing it, anyways. The thought of fighting creeping into his mind. If he wanted to, he could try and "intercept" the cat and tell it to stay out of his area. He pushed the thought aside: maybe this cat needed something else.
Fennec tensed as the other cat grew closer and closer. he narrowed his eyes for a second, why wasn't this cat looking at where she was going? She was going to run right into him. Wait: she was going to run right into him Fennec tried to scramble away as the cat skidded on the dirt. He became Off balance, and the cat knocked right into him. His chest/shoulder area right below his neck emitted a flare of pain as the cat ran into him. Fennec have a surprised gasp and he was knocked backwards, his legs scrabbling for a hold on the dirt. Fennec ended up on his side, upwardly supported by his paw while the place where the cat hit him throbbed silently. He gritted his teeth to clinch out the momentary pain.
He looked back at the cat, who seemed to have hit him with her head. "Nice entrance." He coughed, steadily trying to regain a sitting position, A small smirk-like smile appeared on his face "instead of running in, you know, You could've walked."

Everything was coming quite clearly now, and what Timid thought she was running from, she was running into. The small she cat brought her head up, analyzing her surroundings. ''...Where am I...?'' She wasn't really asking anyone in particular. Though she was still confused about everything around her. One moment she was hunting--which was a complete fail. The next thing, she was running from a ''loud voice'', only to find herself further than where she liked to been. Timid scrambled to her paws, blinking her eyes steadily as she looked around. The golden colored cat turned to the voice.
His voice had frightened her. She didn't know he was right there. The she cat tilted her head slightly, an obvious smile on her maw. She was still quite unsure, and her ears pinned flat to her head at realizing what he had said. Timid was a sweet girl. She hardly caused any harm, and she never tried to in the first place. ''I-I d-din-didn't m-mean it.'' She stammered, panting slightly. This was new land to her. The scent was remarkably different than where she came from. Very beautiful. Not shady, or dark like back in the Syndicate. Not dried up grass,or gloomy skies. Nature looked as if it were singing--funny thing, right? Nature singing? That was an exaggeration, but all Timid knew; it was pretty here.
''S-s-sor-sorry.'' She stuttered, clamping her maw shut. She could feel her slight shivers taking over whenever she was in the presence of another cat. She was afraid that they might hurt her. And, though the tom didn't look that much older than her, Timid had been wrong before. Even some of the youngest cats could hurt her. Yet, they all had been training to become fighters, and her path was chosen. It came to pass that she would be a hunter. The she cat wrapped her tail around herself, thinking it would be the only thing that protected her. ''I was chasing after a bird.'' Her voice was soft, delicate as she spoke without any interruptions. ''...I think I lost it.'' That was obvious that she did, and she felt stupid for voicing it aloud. But, the only thing she wanted right now? Was to stay alive in this situation. Timid didn't trust cats easily, and she had her reasons not to.

Fennec watched the she cat as they got their wits together. Fennecs ears perked when she stuttered, was this cat scared of him? He momentarily looked down. He hoped not, and he didn't know why. He listed closely as the Golden cat replied and apologized to him, and explained how she had lost a robin. It was unusual to have someone speed in her, Fennec had mostly been alone. Except, for the uncommon passer-through and a rare fox. it was mostly his thoughts, his trees, and him.
"it's okay." he winced as he put Lora of pressure on his left paw, sending a shock through his shoulder area. Otherwise, he was unharmed. "Are you good?" He added, trying to sound like he was welcoming, but also still masked. It wasn't everyday ran into someone, or literally ran into someone. He was tired of talking to himself in his head. It got lonely sometimes, and he never thought of taking a stroll out of his territory.
He balanced himself in a collected sitting position, although his feathery tail was streaked with dirt and his cream fur was tousled, he seemed fine. He tilted his head and looked at the other cat. All in all, she seemed unhostile and passive. "Who are you?" His voice was lighter then he expected. It was soft and quiet, like a queen helping a lost kit. It was a simple question, and possibly not the right one. He cleared his throat, "and where did you come from?" He asked, a little more sarcastic ring to his tone.
He decided to stop there, he didn't want to bombarded the shocked she-cat with questions, so he left it at a simple three: Health, Who, and Where. Even though his 'where' question was not needed, Fennec was extremely curious about the different scent the she-cat gave off. He hasn't known of it before. He blinked and shifted his gaze. Was there another clan? Oh, Fennec hopes this cat wasn't part of any sort of Clan. He heard what they'd do from surrounding gossip: they would kick other cats out and invade harmless loners' territory to make it their own. But, clan cats never strayed from their confining spaces, so why would he take his territory? It wasn't too close from the 'borders'.
He tenses, and forced himself to relax. He was just being paranoid, it was nice out and he had a relaxed mind, he was not in the mood for a bad day to suddenly rain down on him from out of the blue. Hopefully this this cat wouldn't attack him either: that would be an unfourtunate surprise.

Timid was shivering. Her whole body felt like it did whenever the little droplets of snowflakes made its appearance during Leaf-bare. She definitely knew why she shivered. She was scared. Very scared. Even if the tom didn't take on a scary appearance. He actually looked somewhat...friendly? Possibly he could be, and Timid was over reacting like she normally did. Which would be no surprise for a she cat that was practically scared of her own shadow. Upon his words, the she cat tilted her head slightly, her midnight green eyes blinking slowly. That definitely didn't sound mean at all. Slowly, she was letting her guard down, and found her head sulking as she stared at her paws, covered by her tail. Her tail wasn't very long, so that was hard for her to know she would be protected by it. For Timid, all she wanted was for someone to protect her. But, every time, she would hear Every cat for themselves. It's a kill, or be killed world. Learn to protect yourself because no one will.
The she cat was one of the most sweetest felines anyone would ever get to know. If half the cats in the syndicate weren't ruthless, she figured she would be everyone's best friend. At his question, Timid looked herself over. Aside from the occasional bump on her head, the she cat nodded vigorously. ''I'm fine!'' She squeaked, her voice cracking. It was good she wasn't stuttering. He asked if she were okay. That had to be something. Maybe...he wouldn't kill her, after all?
This made Timid almost thump her tail at the possibility that she would make it unharmed. However, she didn't bring any fresh kill back for the Syndicate fighters...she knew she was a goner if she didn't do as she was told. The she cat almost appeared down again, half-lidding her eyes in a down-casted glance. But, her ears perked at the tom, and slowly she brought her gaze to look back up at him. She wasn't sure if she should tell him her name. After all, he was a stranger to her. Timid didn't like meeting strangers. Then again, it could make up for her plummeting into him pretty hard. The she cat stood to her paws, but it was obvious how petite she stood. Mainly due to the lack of height in her legs. Bashfully, she turned her head away from him, pinning her ears flat. ''I'm Timid.'' It was quite the odd name, but it described her to the core. She was timid...afraid of everything. And, this was only given to her because the queen that nursed her, constantly felt her shivers. ''I'm from...umm...'' Timid looked behind her; the way home. A home that definitely wasn't hers, nor did she belong there. Nor, was she from there. ''...the Syndicate.'' It was a simple answer. That's what he wanted to hear. She just hoped he wouldn't ask more questions about it because Timid never truly like to talk about the Syndicate. She kept debating whether she would leave or not, but she knew she wasn't ready. She was just too afraid to be out on her own.
Before he could ask her another question, the feline piped. ''Who are you? You look mighty young to be scouting this territory on your own,'' Her eyes were wide, looking at him with a curious expression. ''You must be really brave...'' To her, he appeared to be. He was living on his own, a young cat without anyone to guide him. Or...was he alone? Perhaps, there were other cats around here that Timid hadn't seen.

Fennec shifted his jaw and set his paws firmly against the soft ground as he took a more suspicious paradigm to his situation. This cat could be putting on a whole act, shivering, stuttering, and acting all and all frightened to the core, just to manipulate him. Wa sit possible this golden she-cat was playing him? She could easily catch him off guard now, and Fennec wasn't the least bit ready. As the outsider spoke, Fennec viewed her actions as a plan. He tenses when he thought she would attack. But would she?
Fennec nodded as she spoke her name. At first, it seemed odd and made up: a cover for an attacker. But he understood why. It was her true virtue, from the way she stared at her paws and trembled to the way she spoke. Timid was definitely timid. Fennec purses his lips, it suddenly didn't seem like an act anymore. He was actually meeting a cat, the thought of reality made the fur on his tail prickle.
Fennec leaned forward as she paused, and took on a quizzical expression when Timid stated where she was from, was "the syndicate" another one of those redundant Clans? It didn't seem like it, because from what he'd heard the clans had names like ThunderClan. Not Something like Syndicate. He tilted his head, his eyes glinting with a spark of curiosity. "What's the syndicate?" He asked, keeping his tone edgy so he didn't sound like a kit. "It's not a clan? Right?" This time his tone was more rushed. This cat seemed vaguely nice under all of the shyness.
But his words were almost cut off by Timid's next statements. Fennec leaned back and straightened his spine. Maybe he asked enough questions. His ears swiveled l sideways, an abrupt indication that he was ambiguously "speechless". If that was a feeling. He stared straight at Timid's green eyes, trying to form his expression so it was unreadable, but really, he wanted to know more about this Syndicate Cat. "Young? Scouting?" he snorted "I live here. And I'm not some sort of kit " he flicked his ear "my name is Fennec."

Timid pinned her ears down at the slight tone he was using towards her. She felt that she was making him angry--when she tried hard not to. This she cat liked to leave in one piece. Timid stepped back for a moment, looking around at her surroundings. ''I-I d-din-didn't say y-you were a kit.'' She cleared her throat. Though, in her eyes, he was young. And, it still amazed her how he could survive out in this wild without worrying that something might strike him. Give him a disease. That he would suddenly drop dead. Upon hearing his name, her own ears had shot up, and she almost lifted her tail--something that she definitely did not want to do. She was not the dominant one. So, she refrained herself and allowed her tail to swish lowly under her.
''Fennec!'' She echoed. . ''As in the fennec fox?'' She tilted her head slightly. This had amazed--and amused her. Timid knew a lot about the forest. At least, the species of all sorts of animals. In fact, she could go on and on about the many different species that this wonderful world they shared. However, the world wasn't a wonderful place. It was harsh at the moment where she was located. ''That's so cool! I wish I was named after an animal! The fennec fox has really large ears, you know. They're so cute! And, they mainly come out at night. I know that the fox is an enemy for a cat, but I can't help, but gush about how--oh...right. You want to know about the Syndicate...'' She trailed off.
Timid had heard his other questions, but she was hoping to get out of answering them. The Syndicate was no place to be, in Timid's opinion. Many cats had accepted it being their home. And, Timid was forced to because it was the only place she knew. ''It's not another clan,'' She says, taking a seat on her haunches as she looked at her tail once more. It was still pretty close to her, left askew as her eyes clouded over. ''It's more of a...group where cats are thrown in for their evil ways. It's ruthless!'' She shook he head rapidly, like she was trying to get a fly off her face. Timid had never been to one of the clans before, but she heard stories about them. Good...bad, it didn't matter. It seemed like the clans were the best place to be, considering who she was and her rank within the syndicate. ''It's called the Dusk Syndicate...and I really should get back there. I'm suppose to be hunting to feed the fighters...and if I go back without a catch...I..'' The she cat felt her entire body shaking, and she couldn't even force herself to continue the words. Maybe, it was a bad idea that she was telling him this. On the other hand, Timid felt that she was warning him, trying to save his life to stay away from the ruthless beasts of the inferno.
