There was a bit of pride that filled up his chest when he had realised that he had actually staggered the tom, and he would have let out a laugh of pride in his own success, but instead he huffed and scrabbled at the floor upon being squished. It didn’t last very long, thankfully. He sprang to his paws, almost as if in shock by being smushed, fur puffed up a bit.
“Really? I mean–yeah, of course, yeah!” Of course he executed that perfectly, how could he not? The next question that came had him tilting his head back, staring up at the sky in thought as to what he could have done next. His answer came uncertain, as he genuinely wasn’t too sure. Things were easier said than done in battle, after all. “Well, I… I dunno, hm. Maybe I could’ve swatted at your eyes–if you were a real enemy.”

"You could..."
The bengal mused at Smolderpaw's response, nodding thoughtfully. It wasn't necessarily a wrong answer, but not the one he was looking for. "But if the opponent squishes you a certain way, or is just generally bigger than you, it might be hard to get your paws close to their face." He explained. "If you can do that, then I certainly encourage you to do so. However, another thing you can do is just let yourself go limp." Brokenstream told the apprentice, pacing around him. "Remember, the warrior code does not intend for cats to kill each other. Any respectable Clan cat would get up after thinking you are beaten, or at least slacken their weight to give you a chance to flee because they feel you are no longer a threat. Deceit can save your life." He finished with a twitch of his ear. "I don't think I need to teach you how to do that. You've pretty much got the basics down, I'd say, but let's work on defensive moves really quick."
The Lionheart backed up a few paces from Smolderpaw. "I'm going to roll out of the way of an imaginary blow and then swipe at a fake target." He glanced around, spotting a small tree growing out of the ground. "Ah, here! Pretend this tree is an enemy. You're going to roll out of the way of it's attack and immediately fight back." Dropping down into a crouch, the tom expertly rolled to the side then reared up on his hind legs and swiped at the branches of the tree. As he dropped back down to all fours, he stared expectantly at the young tom. "Go on then."

Oh. Go limp. Yeah, that made more sense. Smolderpaw’s lips curled, shaping an ‘o’ as he registered the new information. It had just never occurred to them that he was even allowed to do that, just… Play dead. Huh. “O-kay!”
The apprentice watched as the larger tom backed away a few paces, and he nodded along as he spoke… Roll out of the way of an attack and then promptly fight back. Dodge and strike back! Smolderpaw dropped into a crouch of his own–or, perhaps it would better be described as dropping into a loaf as he watched Brokenstream’s demonstration. Cool. While the Lionheart had done the demonstration with practical perfection, Smolderpaw wasn’t so sure that he could do the same. A boy could dream, he supposed.
He stepped close to the tree, before he dropped into a crouch and rolled over as quickly as he could. Once his paws were underneath him, he sprang upwards, bringing his paw crashing down on the branches as he landed on his paws once more. Perhaps a bit messy and overly-enthusiastic, but he had… Done it! At least he presumed. “How was that? Did I do it?”
