THAT was what she was looking for! Vinepaw was just about spot on, maybe a bit stiff still in the stalk but that would only work itself out with practice. It’s certainly good enough. Deadmoon deadpanned, by which she meant it was as better than anything she’d done at that age. Then again, her mentor had been trying to get her to catch rabbits, not teach her a skill she could actually use to contribute to the clan.

I think you’re ready to have a go at something real, over in that brushy bit beneath the pine. she mewed, indicating the location with a tip of her head. If it hadn’t already been obvious to Vinepaw that she approved of his crouch, it should be now. And they seemed to have kept the prey relatively unaware of their presence, with at least a mouse and some bird knocking around, looking for seeds. @Tallstar

Vinepaw’s pulse quickened as Deadmoon assessed his crouch. It was good to hear that his technique was improving, though he knew there was still room for growth. Deadmoon’s approval was a small but welcome boost to his confidence.

He followed the warrior’s gaze to the brush beneath the pine tree, where the scent of mouse and bird was faint but discernible. “Got it,” Vinepaw replied, his tone steady but focused. He adjusted his stance, preparing to put his skills to the test.

Moving carefully, he approached the brush with deliberate, silent steps. The rustling of prey was faint, but it was enough to guide him. This was his chance to prove himself, and he was determined to make it count.

Things seemed to be going well so far! Deadmoon didn't dare call out to either commend or criticize Vinepaw lest she scare away his quarry, but she kept a good eye on him nonetheless. He was on his way into the brush now, and everything about would presumably be rather wary. Or it needed to be, if it wanted to avoid becoming dinner for someone. Regardless, she moved a bit closer, just so she'd be able to see the end of his efforts. @Tallstar

The bird hopped closer to the ground, pecking at the forest floor for seeds and insects. Vinepaw took advantage of its distraction, inching forward silently, each paw placed with deliberate care to avoid snapping twigs or rustling leaves. He could feel the presence of Deadmoon nearby, the experienced warrior's watchful gaze a silent encouragement.

As he neared his prey, Vinepaw's heart raced with excitement and determination. This was his moment to prove himself, to demonstrate his skills as a hunter-in-training. He could almost taste the victory of a successful hunt.

Just as he prepared to spring forward, the bird suddenly froze, its head snapping up as if it had sensed danger. Vinepaw cursed inwardly, freezing himself as he locked eyes with the wary bird. Time seemed to stand still for a heartbeat, both predator and prey assessing each other.

But before the bird could take flight, Vinepaw made his move. With a powerful leap, he surged forward, claws extended, aiming to catch the bird off guard. The bird squawked in alarm, wings beating frantically as it tried to escape, but Vinepaw was relentless.

His claws met feathers with a soft thud, and in a swift motion, he secured his catch with a swift bite to the neck, ensuring a quick and merciful end. The bird twitched briefly before going still in his grip.

Pride swelled within Vinepaw as he lifted his prize, a victorious gleam in his amber eyes. He glanced towards Deadmoon, seeking approval in the older warrior's gaze.
