Ash’s attention came back to the Apprentice. “Are you one of those Clan cats?” he asked.

Willowpaw turned to see that the rest of her patrol had already left. They probably think I’m right behind them. She thought bitterly.
Turning her attention back to Ash, she meowed “Yes, though I’m only an apprentice,” then asking a question of her own, she mewed “what are you doing on the ShadowClan border? You smell of ThunderClan.”

ThunderClan… that other cat mentioned it too! But then what was ShadowClan? Or ThunderClan…? “ I… a cat with a lot of scars talked about it… ThunderClan… He had asked me that: ‘Why are you on ThunderClan territory?’”
Ash shook off some of the water on his fur before continuing. “So what exactly is a ‘ThunderClan’ ?” He asked. “Or a ‘ShadowClan’ ?” He added.

Oh, so this kit wasn’t a clan cat. She wondered whether she should bring him back to WindClan camp, and decided to do so. She couldn’t just leave him starving in the Clan territories.
“Come with me Ash” she mewed “Twilightstar will understand if you explain why you’re here.”

“Twilightstar? Who’s that?” He asked.
“I forgot to ask, what’s your name?” questioned Ash
“Where are we heading to?” wondered the kit.
“Where did the other two big cat go to?” he asked.

“Twilightstar is my clan leader,” Willowpaw replied “The clans are groups of cats that live around here. There are four clans, I’m in WindClan, and the other three are ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and RiverClan.” She shuddered at the name of the last clan, they were the reason so many of her clan mates had died.
“My name is Willowpaw,” she answered to Ash’s second question. “And we’re heading to my clan camp, where you’re going to meet Twilightstar.”
“The other two cats have already gone, and you’ll see them when we get back to camp.”

where the frogs croak and the willows weep hums a voice: wind whistling through trees. it whispers and sighs, and screams otherwise.

mud clings to her (his) fur, slops between her (his?) paw pads, and climbs up her (his.) legs. the warm sun had baked it dry; it became her second skin.

he stalks near the border, but some invisible force stills his paws. he halts, head swaying side to side. he peers into the hanging branches. not so far. turn back.

a twig snaps under his heavy paw. he startles, and his mud-caked fur puffs up. his ears flatten against his head; he hisses spittingly. his yellow eyes flick around, searching for danger.

hello?

he looks down at his paws. stick. he lifts a paw and nudges at the splintered wood. he slams his paw back down, snarling. then he lifts the paw again, sniffing curiously at the twig. hello. he bares his teeth and sinks his canines into the stick, snapping it into more pieces. the tip of his tail flicks erratically.

when a splinter pricks the inside of his mouth, his whole body jerks back with a flinch. he spits out the broken twig and growls lowly. shaking out his pelt, he stalks away.

he's nothing more than a shadow slinking through the heather, laying low.
