They had reached the final border with the other clans, and Deadmoon was giggling at Mistypaw's little quip. Oh, most of the other clans smell funny. she chuckled, turning around to smile a bit at her apprentice. And speaking of smelling funny, Riverclan. The fishes. It didn't smell too bad today, but she was sure that within a day or two it would be back to smelling strongly of dead, brined fish. Gesturing to the border, Deadmoon explained They're the clan we're probably on the worst terms with, but that doesn't mean we can be hostile to cats we see at the border. We aren't friends, but we don't need another war.
She wasn't sure if Mistypaw would know WHY they didn't like Riverclan at the moment. Had it been 6 moons since Fallownose's death? It might have been, actually. That was.....a scary thought. Since their former deputies death a war had been fought and won, Crowtooth had been promoted, Twilightstar had had kits. Mistypaw had been born and grown. Snowybreeze had had his own kits. And Deadmoon was exactly the same. As was relatively frequent, an existential crisis regarding her own lack of development had struck Deadmoon at the least opportune of times. But Mistypaw didn't need to deal with that, so the molly instead set her course for Twilight Falls, moving alongside the river towards the waterfall. @v4mp6re_b1t3

"I've heard we weren't on good terms with Riverclan. Lots of warriors talk about them," Mistypaw exclaims her tail twitched with annoyance at the many stories she had heard. She quickly followed Deadmoon towards Twilight Falls, excited to see what was next to see.

The Riverclan border. In Whisperinghive's opinion, the worst border. The heather was one of the only good things, mostly because they shut up Maggotpaw. "Keep your ears open. An otter or two might be around." He said to the others in his patrol.
Maggotpaw trudges along. Today is an extra bad and stupid one, now, because it didn't get what it wamted, so the greasy little apprentice is quietly fuming to itself and otherwise not being a bother right now. It's almost nice.
Whisperinghive says something that Maggotpaw isn't paying any attention to. There's a funny stink on the wind, funnier than the normal Riverclan-smell. Foul, even, but in a good way. A way that Maggotpaw likes, at least.
It breaks away from Whisperinghive and Sunnypurr to go and investigate, blithely marching off after the stink.

The tom followed his patrol members, tail flicking. Stars, it smelled here. How did the Fish live smelling like that. Gross. Sunnypurr focused his attention back on Whisperinghive when the warrior spoke up. Otters were..those little slippery things. They look cute, but damn those little things were evil. The tom nodded at the words, realizing he hadn't reacted. He went and marked the border, tail flicking. They blinked when suddenly Maggotpaw had broken away. Uhhhh. He turned to Whisperinghive, looking confused and alarmed. Sunnypurr highly doubted the apprentice would listen to him. "Er...Whisperinghive? Uh, Maggotpaw went off. I don't know where they're going." He says slowly, hoping Whisperinghive wouldn't get mad. So strange that he was scared of being yelled at by a cat that was younger than him
So weird.

It was nice to see Maggotpaw fuming after not getting what it wants. Teaches it that the clans don't revolve around it. But Maggotpaw didn't see it that way apparently, because they broke off from the group to 'investigate'. Sunnypurr noticed too. Whirling around to the direction his apprentice ran off to. "Maggotpaw!" The orange warrior growled. "Come back, or I'll get Crowtooth to demote you back to a kit and you won't get any flowers." Whisperinghive said, stepping towards his apprentice. This was a hunting patrol, not playtime!
Maggotpaw trots eagerly toward a scene of unfamiliar carnage, unperturbed by Whisperinghive's distant warning. A demotion back to being Maggotkit sounds like it would be nice. Not going out for a while might be sad, but it's getting cold out, so Maggotpaw decides it wouldn't mind having to stay in camp. They could just ask Maplepaw and Fallenpaw to get them things. Whisperinghive's warning goes unheeded, and Maggotpaw trots into a fishy mess dotting the bank near the rushing river. This is it, this is the stink! Something, or someone, must have left these all here. Was it Windclan? No...Windclan know better than to be wasteful...any cat would. That's one of the big rules.
Had Maggotpaw been paying attention to any of the otter-news at all, it would have been able to connect the dots. Only, it hdn't been, so instead it flops over in the mess of otter-leftovers and starts rolling and rolling and rolling to get that fantastic fish-stink all over itself. Such an incredible smell, Maggotpaw just can't help themself!
"It's dead-things!" They announce brightly. "It's dead-things, and they're fish! Look!" Maggotpaw clumsily hauls a relatively un-gnawed on fish back toward Sunnypurr and Whisperinghive. "This is a fish," it says, muffled and matter-of-fact, proud that it can draw this conclusion. It has never actually seen a fish before but it knows that these are prey things and they smell like Riverclan and like stink, so it only makes sense for them to be fish.
