Pumpkinpaw’s ears perked up at the sound of his mentor’s call, and he began to feel guilt. He’d been lingering near the apprentices' den, hidden in the shade, but now he forced himself to approach his mentor, his tail brushing the ground nervously. "S-sorry, Vinesmoke," he murmured, ducking his head as he approached. "I didn’t mean to keep you waiting. I just…"
He trailed off as there was no real excuse, he’d been avoiding training, dreading the moment he’d have to prove himself. He was afraid tunneling was too dangerous, too difficult, and he wasn’t sure he had the courage for it. But he couldn’t admit that.
Not wanting to stall any longer he lifted his head and he looked up to see Vinesmoke. "I’m ready now. I won’t slow you down." The words came out quieter than he intended, but he meant them.
