Re: RiverClan Medicine Cat Apprentice Applications!
Shorepaw
13 Moons - He/Him They/Them
A tall cream tom with blue-gray hind legs and white markings
“We didn’t choose this life, we’re just living it”

PERSONALITY
Shorepaw is a reserved tom. He dislikes long-winded conversations, preferring quiet exchanges or short necessary unless he feels truly comfortable with someone.
Despite his restered nature, he is fiercely loyal to his core. Shorepaw does not hesitate to defend those in need, whether through sharp words or sharpened claqs. He isn’t reckless—just impulsive. He's kind, but it isn't the blind, flowery optimistic kind. It's rooted in understanding. He sees others for who they are, flaws and all, and still chooses to stand beside them, despite everything they may have done.
Honesty is both his blessing and his curse. He doesn’t sugarcoat his opinions, often speaking with blunt directness that can come off as harsh or disrespectful, even if he never intends to hurt. His empathy is quiet but there. It's shown through his actions and behavior rather than in his words.
Shorepaw is impatient. Its plain and simple, he doesn't like waiting. It can lead to impusive descisons and rash descisons. He's jumpy and irritable, particularly when startled or put in unpredictable situations. Loud noises trigger something in his brain, and he shuts off the kindness and becomes snappy. He has no tolerance for chaotic cats, which is odd, saying as how he was when younger.
Yet, for all his flaws, there is an undeniable charm in him. He is steadfast and reliable. And when he believes in something, he holds onto it, whether an idea or a someone, with relentless devotion.
Traits: + Kind, Understanding, Loyal, Protective, Curious, Empathetic, Charming
= Analytical, Reserved, Blunt,
- Impulsive, Judgmental, Stubborn, Guarded, Reclusive, Impatient

BACKSTORY
Kithood
Shorekit was born to Shellgnaw and Sandpurr, alongside Dunekit. Shorekit was a chaotic kit, often running around the Riverclan camp and bothering as many cats as he possibly could. His parents disappeared at some point, he didn't really know. Not that it mattered to him, of course. He pushed aside the grief and continued his antics being Riverclan's local menace! He scampered around, quickly becoming impatient. Where was his apprenticeship? He demanded it! Respectfully, of course. Because if Shorekit was anything, it was respectful! Heh.
Eventually, Dunekit disappears too. This loss stings him a bit more. Him and Dune were close, they were his partner in crime, he caused trouble with him constantly. But Shorekit never once let himself grieve, and he kept kicking! Haha. Yeah no he is so bad with loss.
Apprenticeship - First moon
Hey, there was his apprenticeship! Great! Shorepaw was thrilled to be free of his tiny baby cage. He was apprenticed to Pebblesplash. He didn't really get much training done, it was mostly going around bragging how he was finally an apprentice, due to his mentor not doing much. Shorepaw looked up the a warrior named Silentfall, and followed her around constantly. One day, he saw Silentfall leaving camp at night, and of course, he had to follow her! It's what he did. He scampered after her, but he lost her. Shorepaw tried following what he thought was her scent, but he was not entirely familiar with her, and very quickly got lost. He panicked, and tried going back, but it was dark, and he had no scent trail. He got lost. It was silly of him to keep going and wait until a patrol found him, but Shorepaw wasn't thinking logically. And it doesn't take a kit long to get lost.
Outsider Time
After Shorepaw accidentally left Riverclan, he wandered the twoleg place. He made a very good friend named Gnash. Gnash was an outdoor kittypet that had found Shorepaw while he had first come to the twoleg place, and they bonded immediately. The pair did everything together, and Shorepaw had begun to follow him to his twoleg place on the cold nights. One night, they decided to explore together! Nothing really could go wrong, right? Unfortunately, someone's dog had gotten off the leash earlier that day, and this dog wasn't very friendly. Gnash and Shorepaw tried to run from the dog, but they were both still young, and it caught up. Gnash was quickly killed and thrown aside, leaving the dogs full attention on Shorepaw. He tried to fight it, but the dog got his back, biting down and leaving a deep wound. Shorepaw couldn't fight anymore, so he let the dog lose interest without bleeding out. Shorepaw fell unconscious, and the dog shortly left. At some point, Shorepaw sustained a wound on his face, leaving him blind in his right eye.
Shorepaw woke up in an unfamiliar den. It reeked of twolegs. He quickly realized he was in a twoleg den, and then also realized, there was a dog. A small one. And then, a third realization, he couldn't see out of his right eye. This is when panic set in. He began yowling, demanding to be set free from the metal enclosure.
Moons passed, his physical wounds healed, not without a limp and a blind eye, but minor damages, yknow. Shorepaw couldn't handle being around dogs. He never was allowed to leave the den. So he was trapped. He began plotting his escape. Shorepaw memorized the twolegs routine. When they left the house and the monster outside rumbled away, when they let the dog outside, when they brought the twoleg kit away to the side of house he wasn't allowed. Everything. Now, the plotting officially began. But, all his plans were thrown aside when the door was left open for a second longer. He darted out of the house, and ran as fast as he could, finally leaving behind the twolegs. He ran until his chest ached and his limp had made it practically impossible for him to walk. But he had made it far enough. He settled down for the night in a hopefully abandoned den that reeked of some predator, and when he woke up in the morning, it was time to find Riverclan again, even if he hardly felt like a clan cat any longer. Shorepaw had been gone for too long.
Shorepaw wandered for about a moon, making acquaintances and allies, all while teaching himself the basics of life. He wandered and wandered, until..it felt familiar. Suddenly the land wasn't a stranger to his mind, not an unfamiliar place he had yet to figure out of the dangers of, it was home. He raced to the borders of Riverclan, refusing to let his limp set him back. And he waited. He was home, and it was time to actually come back.

WHY HIM?
Shorepaw doesn’t want another cat to suffer injuries like he had. After the twolegs locked him up and leaving his wounds to fester without proper care. It was in the past now, but the scars never really left him. If he could do something, anything, to prevent another cat from feeling that same powerless dread, he would. And so he would do everything in his power to make sure no cat had to sit and suffer.
It’s not as if Berryshine isn’t already doing these things—she’s capable and Shorepaw respects her deeply. But the thought of standing by while knowing he could possibly be doing more keeps pressing at him. He wants to contribute because the idea of turning his back on a cat in pain feels almost unbearable to him. He understands what it’s like to be unable to fight for yourself due to something you couldn't control. And that is the main of few reasons he ever considers violence—when it’s truly necessary to protect someone who can’t do it themselves because of sickness or injury or they're scared.
Shorepaw has always had an interest in herbs though, but at one point, like most apprentices, he got caught up in the all-consuming desire to be the best warrior possible. And in a way, that dream never truly left him, as Shorepaw would still love to be a warrior. But the reality of his injuries, the way his hind legs sometimes ache or restrict his speed due to the limp, forced him to possibly reconsider. He can fight and he can run just fine, although not for long, but there will always be moments where his body betrays him, reminding him that sheer force and agility may never be his strongest weapons.
Healing, though—healing is something he can rely on. Something that doesn’t demand brute strength or speed but patience, knowledge, and the steady confidence of knowing exactly how to help. And that is something he can do. That is something he can master, and is entirely willing to.
PROS AND CONS
PROS
Personal Motivation – Shorepaw’s past injuries and neglect weren’t just painful—they were a defining experience. He knows what it feels like to suffer without help, and that drives him to ensure no cat ever endures the same. His emotional connection to the role makes him deeply invested in his patients’ well-being, pushing him to be as thorough and attentive as possible.
Curiosity and Knowledge – Even before officially stepping into the role, Shorepaw had an interest in herbs. This natural curiosity means he’s more likely to pick up medicinal knowledge quickly, retaining complex treatments and remedies without struggling. His ability to apply this knowledge efficiently makes him an asset, ensuring he doesn’t just learn—he uses what he learns.
Non-violent Views – Shorepaw has never been one to seek out fights. He believes in protecting others, but not through unnecessary aggression. His philosophy aligns well with the medicine cat path—rather than using his claws to safeguard his clanmates, he uses his mind, his knowledge, and his care. The only time he’d ever resort to violence would be if a helpless cat were in immediate danger and had no means to defend themselves.
Empathetic and Observant – He’s deeply in tune with others' emotions and picks up on subtle cues—pain, discomfort, distress—even when a cat tries to hide it. This makes him particularly effective at treating cats who may not openly express their suffering. He’s also incredibly perceptive about details, whether it’s minor changes in symptoms or shifts in a cat’s behavior that might indicate something wrong.
Determination – Giving up isn’t in Shorepaw’s nature, especially when it comes to the health and safety of his clanmates. His stubbornness ensures no cat gets left behind under his watch. Even if a situation seems hopeless, he refuses to stop until he’s exhausted every option. He only steps back if Berryshine does—and if she explicitly tells him to as well.
CONS
Physical Limitations – Shorepaw has a blind right eye with torn skin, and a mauled back, leaving his hind legs with mobility issues. If he walking for too fast or for too long, his wounds begin aching and leaving him with a limp. These injuries could make gathering herbs in emergencies difficult or limit his ability to reach patients quickly. His injuries also chip away at his confidence; when he fails or falls behind, he questions whether he’s truly good enough for the clan.
Emotional Weight and Trauma – Shorepaw’s past is brutal—being trapped with twolegs, watching his best friend die, getting mauled by a dog. These experiences left him deeply unsettled, resulting in:
Jumpy or rude behavior—He startles easily, especially during loud noises or moments of tension.
Flashbacks—Certain smells, sights, or sounds (especially dogs) trigger panic responses, making him mentally check out for a few minutes.
Aggression under stress—On bad days, he can get snappy and irritable, especially when overwhelmed. Though this rarely affects his ability to heal, the trauma causes insomnia, leading to exhaustion that makes him groggy and sometimes less alert during important or potentially stressful moments.
Fear of Failure – Losing a patient isn’t just tragic for him. No, it’s personal. He gets attached to those he heals and blames himself if they die under his care. He fears letting his clanmates suffer, but even more than that, he fears being powerless to help. While this makes him dedicated to improvement, it also creates unnecessary pressure—pushing himself too hard, questioning his abilities, and struggling to forgive himself after failures, etcetera.
Leadership Issues (?) – Medicine cats hold authority, guiding their clan in moments of crisis and making decisions. While Shorepaw respects and admires Berryshine, he may struggle to speak up in situations where his input is needed. These doubts might slow him down when time is critical.

ROLEPLAY EXAMPLES

WHY ABOUT ME
I do not enjoy speaking about myself in such a manner as "I'm awesome pick me" (at least, this is what it feels like to me personally. ), so I will tell you a little bit about myself before we move onto pros and cons! Nothing much, just a bit of stuff 'bout me!
Hi! I'm Ollie, a 16 year old high school student! I've been on this site for a little over a year, and I've done tons of roleplaying since! I am not nearly as old as some on the site (coughs, cinder) but I do like to think I have pretty decent experience! I've made mistakes and learned from them, as most of us do. I am homeschooled and I do actives like BSA (Boy Scouts) and a youth group! I am busy on Tuesdays majority of the time, and sometimes I will disappear during weekends or longer (only longer during the summer, due to summer camp) for camping trips! I play guitar and write(obviously), and I am also am artist! I love rock and punk music, but I'll listen to anythin! Now, we are moving on to pros and cons!
PROS AND CONS
PROS
Experience - I am a relatively experienced writer! I have massively improved since I've first joined WCO, and I'm still improving always! Writing has become an enjoyable hobby for me instead of a chore for school, and I'm glad I no longer hold it in that light! I have been in the site since early March 2024, so I know my way around by now!
Genuine Interest - I am wholeheartedly interested in becoming an HR. I've tried a few times now (which, has yet gotten me nowhere, but someday! Hopefully soon<3) and Shorepaw is currently one of my favorites! I do genuinely want this role, and I will try my hardest to meet expectations! I've been wanting to be a high rank for a while, and I'm genuinely glad I wasn't chosen before, I am ready now!
Friendliness! - Yes! I am, alas, a very friendly fellow. Ask anyone I know, they can confirm. I swear I'm not meanie. I try to welcome as many members as I can, but there's been so many lately! But, yes. I try to be warm and open as much as I can before it becomes overbearing.
Open Communication - I do not have discord, and likely won't, due me and my parents own personal comfort, but my PMs and VMs are ALWAYS open! I am quick to respond majority of the time, as I am regularly online! 3-5 hours a day is my usual.(as you can tell i don't have a life)
CONS
Mental Health - I am diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and sometimes, when I'm doing bad, my motivation will decrease extremely. Shorter posts are likely during this time. These episodes don't tend to last more than 2 or 3 weeks, don't worry. And, I am still likely to be active with Shorepaw as much as I am able to. Also, I am autistic, and my hyperfixations may affect activity (though it's not nearly as much as..yeah), as they (sort've) been lately!<3
Lack of HR Experience - I have only been high-ranks in alt clans, which very obviously are not the same as a real high-ranking position. I am beyond willing to learn and adjust as I need, not to worry! Just beware that my high rank experience is limited. I fully understand the need for high activity and open and consistent clan involvement.
Weak Memory - I often need bumps and little pokes for me to remember roleplays. I have yet to find out why my memory is so poor, but I have my bump policy set to six hours, and anyone is more than welcome to bump sooner on time sensitive roleplays.
And as always, anything that comes up IRL is not always predictable. Especially with where I've lived my whole life, if a hurricane hits us and my powers go out for days on end and, in turn, my internet, as it did in the most recent ones, I may not be able to be consistently online. I will try and make sure my duties are covered and I will be online as much as possible, but my safety will always be first!<3
