Shadepaw followed the group outside of camp to their destination, frustrated that she had missed a simple direction—find a partner. Anger and disgust at herself prickled her paws. How had it happened? How had it happened? Perhaps she’d been too excited about the prospect of finally learning battle training, but she knew that was no excuse. I’ll just do better next time. She had to. She’d remember this moment.

She listened to the warrior intently, dropping into a crouch and adjusting it as he continued. Claws sheathed, shoulders loose, center your balance. Shadepaw focused her weight into her paws as evenly as she could, although she tensed her muscles too much before remembering ‘shoulders loose’. Think of a hunting crouch, she thought.

An apprentice speaking up caught her attention, and she stared at him in disbelief as he had the nerve to challenge the warrior, even going so far as to suggest they partner up. He was either stupid or extremely self-confident, which didn’t bode well for his character either way. She scoffed. The apprentice would surely get shredded, which would be amusing to watch, but she had a better idea.

“Hey, smartypants,” she called, padding forward. “Why don’t you go up against someone your own size? Maybe you won’t get immediately shredded.” She gave Tigernight a narrowed glance before focusing back on the offending apprentice with her sharp amber eyes. She hadn’t gotten any battle training before, but she assumed the other apprentice hadn’t either, because of how he had suggested going against a trained warrior rather than his peers. If he actually had experience, he’d probably know that that would be a bad idea—although she knew it because she had something many of her clanmates seemed to be lacking: common sense.

“Well? Or are you too cowardly?” Shadepaw added. That would surely provoke him to accept, and if he’s angry, he wouldn’t be thinking clearly. That would be in her favor. She was fairly certain she could handle him… Although she had to remember that this was her first time, too. Don’t get overconfident. The problem was, she didn’t know how good he was, which made it hard to tell if she was or wasn’t. Nevertheless, she had signed up for this, she would deal with it.
