Midnightclaw padded in after Briarsplash, dipping her head towards the leader. "A loner attacked while on patrol," she explains quickly. "It only attacked me but it managed to get away, although I did get a good hit on him." Her tail now tucked under, she looked over at Briarsplash, waiting for her comments.

Briarsplash heard the abrupt 'enter', and got the gist that maybe she could just duck inside due to her special rank. Maybe. She wasn't certain; after all, it wasn't like she needed to report to Dawnstar herself very often. The fluffy she-cat often preferred to just do as she was told and run her patrols. But such situations arise now and then, like today's.

The Enforcer let Midnightclaw speak first, offering an affirming grunt. Then she swiveled her large head back to the leader, eyes narrowed. Her body language screamed a bit of frustration, directed at the situation (and herself). Figuring she should repeat most of what she'd told Mistlewhisker, Briarsplash squared her shoulders and began.

"Darkpaw 'n I didn't even have a chance to move before he attacked. He almost looked sorta familiar, though I can't place why... but he was a wiry thing — black fur with a white front paw, green eyes, and a scar over his left eye. It looked blind, though I wasn't sure. He looked young, like a new warrior's age. Midnightclaw fought him off well, had him fleeing before we could even strike."

Briarsplash's nose scrunched in annoyance at the next part, tail lashing. She clearly wasn't happy about what she had to report, and still wanted to sink her teeth into the scum loner. If only she'd at least had some fur between her claws to bring back as a souvenir, then maybe the scowl would've lessened on her maw (maybe not). "I tried to catch him, but he got away. Chased 'im as far as the border to the outskirts. He called after us that he apparently had a group of others that were planning to attack our camp. We didn't scent or see anybody else, and I stayed there for a bit to make sure. But it sounds like we've got a growing problem now."

[ ooc info: i believe the rper said that the loner is an ex-shc apprentice, so that's why he's "familiar" even though she can't place him, but briar doesn't recognize him personally o7 ]

[ @Hex - Midnightclaw | @Undertaker - Dawnstar ]

Midnightclaw's report was short and left much to be desired. Thankfully, Briarsplash filled in the blanks, and Dawnstar wasn't stuck demanding more answers. Black, white forepaw, green eyes.... it took a little thinking for the name to come to mind.

"Mistpaw, he was a former ShadowClan apprentice, but he went missing about a moon or so ago," Dawnstar replied with a fierce scowl.

"Tell the Enforcers to keep an eye on the outskirts, and I'll inform the clan to be more vigilant around the territory. I highly doubt loners will cause us much trouble, but it won't hurt to be wary." She was curious why this mousebrain was set on attacking his former clan. But she supposed she didn't need a reason, he was just another hindrance to bury.

"Unless you have more to add, dismissed." She tells the pair.

Hawkbite seemed to have gotten out of his slump. Perhaps it was just due to the fact Fishbite and Tigernight took up so much of his time while he was raising them. They were warriors now, so he didn't have to worry about supplementing their training anymore or watching them like a hawk to ensure they stayed out of trouble.

The Commander was feeling antsy enough to approach the Leaders' Den with something much more out of the normal. No bad news this time. Nothing annoying -- in his opinion -- to bother Dawnstar about. Just... a way to stretch some muscles.

"Dawnstar," the always silent Commander spoke out as he pushed his way into the den. "How do you feel about getting a little workout in and having a spar with me?" he'd inquire, a more mischievous light to his eyes. It wasn't like him to be so light and unserious around the leader, so it'd be interesting to see her reaction to a, seemingly, happier Hawkbite.

@Undertaker - Dawnstar
The heavily scarred, dark brown tabby lifted her head and glared at Hawkbite as the commander walked in silently. He didn't have any new cats with him, and he didn't look like he was in a bad mood. Nothing annoying to pester her with this time. He didn't give her any time to guess what he was here about. As punctual as usual.

"So a workout for me and an ass-kicking for you." An amused grin stretches across her face at the idea of challenging Hawkbite. If he was at least half as good as his sister had been, Dawnstar was hoping for at least a nice ache in her muscles after this.

"I'm game, lead the way." Her eyes a lit with fire as she rises to her paws. It's been so long since she's had a good spar. She hoped she wasn't overestimating Hawkbite's skill.

Sleepysunrise was accustomed and unfazed hearing her grandmother's growl, only the medic's eyes were uncharacteristically glued to the ground, shameful of her mishap. She had desperately tried to convince herself she didn't lose, that she would have won, that the big dumb outsider cheated, that she wasn't weak. But the scar around her throat said otherwise, and that irritated the small young medic immensely. Her ear had given an irritated flick, mumbling a few words as she let Dawnstar come close. Dawnstar was her grandmother, and one of the only cats whom she didn't mind invading her personal space.
"...He was more concerned about me."
She admitted with a bit of disdain; indeed, Rookfire had been more concerned with keeping her alive than chasing the outsider long enough to kill it, even if Sleepysunrise would have preferred dealing with it on her own.

Her head snapped up sending a jolt of dull pain through her neck as her grandmother announced her decision, the medic's eyes briefly wide with panic and shock. Not allowed out on her own anymore?! Sleepysunrise wanted to growl, but suppressed the urge hearing her grandmother hiss. She instead averted her gaze with thinly veiled annoyance and her ears briefly turning back. She didn't complain out loud, but the news had her tense and uncomfortable. She thinks you are weak. She doesn't trust you. Sleepysunrise flickered the words away with her ear and wrapped her tail around her paws, having sat down besides her grandmother.
"Can I at least still go to the outskirts for my experiments?"
She decided to ask rather than voice her annoyance. She knew better than to talk back to her grandmother.

Perhaps some of the tension was still from the attack. Sleepysunrise wasn't used to being thrown around like that, and it couldn't happen again. It would never happen again. That she swore to herself, she couldn't be defeated again. Or her grandmother would never care for her anymore. Her eyes flickered to the hulking leader at her side, and absentmindedly the medic leaned into the she-cat's fur as she spoke on.
"Maybe the rank is jinxed..."
Maybe I'm jinxed, was left unsaid after the dark-furred feline's little off-handed comment. Almost sarcastic, but she caught herself and bit the inside of her cheek. Keep quiet. She couldn't be acting like that in front her grandmother.

She couldn't tell whether her grandmother was actually concerned over losing her eldest granddaughter, or just didn't want to lose another medicine cat. Sleepysunrise wouldn't fool herself by presuming she knew which, or that it could be both. But the leader had a point, and the medic gave a solemn nod. Even if it was only business, the clan would be inconvenienced by losing another medic so soon. And contrary to what one might think, Sleepysunrise actually cared for the clan. She took a breath of her grandmother's comforting scent, closing her eyes briefly.
"I'm sorry."
She apologised, tone genuine, a hint of determination in her following words.
"It won't happen again."

It couldn't happen again. She would play nice and abide by her grandmother's rules, so long as she could continue her studies even outside of the clan's territory, she could keep working. Owlthroat or Rookfire would just have to get more used to her, woe is them. Sleepysunrise blinked, expression stoic and making no move to part from her grandmother's side. A part of her didn't want to. She wanted to stay with her this evening. She craved the assurance that Miss Grandmama didn't fully hate her for this mistake.
"...Can I stay with you tonight?"
She asked quietly, gaze resting on the den's darkened walls.

⊹ [ @Undertaker - Dawnstar | @/mention - Character ] ⊹

A grim expression crosses her face at the request to continue wandering in the outskirts. As much as she wanted to say no, Dawnstar had already told her she could and wasn't fond of taking back her word if it could be avoided. It felt unfair to her. Yet as she peered at the wound on her granddaughter's neck, the "No" almost left her mouth.

"Very well. I'll allow it. Just be careful, I worry. You are what little family I have left." Dawnstar had lost more family than she had obtained; she hoped Sleepysunrise did not become among the lost.

She snorts softly at the mention of a jinx, yet doesn't outright refute it. It probably had more to do with some of her former medicine cats and bad luck. A grunt could be heard after the apology. She didn't understand what Sleepysunrise was apologizing for. It wasn't like she had gone out of her way to get attacked in the first place. But if saying it made her feel better, Dawnstar wouldn't question it.

"Fine," She meows as if she were granting Sleepysunrise some sort of gift. In truth, the leader was a bit on the lonely side. With all her kits out of the nest, she still hated Slytiger, and Mistlewhisker having to tend to patrols and a second mate, her den was usually empty outside of reports. She could do with the company. She got up, stepping over the snake bones that ringed the edge of her nest, and got settled in her nest, beckoning Sleepysunrise to join her.

It made her queasy. She could try to be special, if this cat asked. Maybe. Her gaze goes back to the deputy. Perhaps the dark-furred part-oriental had alluded to it. What had she asked her at the border?

“I can hunt and I can fight..ish. I won't even eat your food if you don't want me to. Or use your... other things? I’m great at following orders, promise!” Her head cants to the side, attention once more on the dark tabby, grey eyes wide as she tracks the bones this large cat is gnawing on. Not with fear, though. With fascination. Oh! The name called into the den comes back to her now. This cat must be Dawn Star. Too bad she wasn't an actual star, like Mistlewhisker didn't have mistles for whiskers. "But you want me to... How do I be special? Do I need to do something? Oh, do you need me to do something? You can tell me. I'll do it." Doubt flickered. Or try to.

Aaaaaaand she couldn't hold in her curiosity anymore. "How do I get one of those?" A dark paw lifts to point to the snake bones.

[ @/Mica - Mistlewhisker ]

She has to stop gnawing on the bones to listen to the outsider. Her words turn the leader's frown into a grimace of disapproval. Wonderful, it was another one of those cats. But she supposed she could fault the younger one for that. Dawnstar's been more picky about who stays and goes in her clan these moons. She let out a loud sigh when she recited the basic nonsense.

"Everyone who lives on the outskirts knows how to fight and hunt, it's part of surviving. I also have several cats in my clan who can do the same, but better than you." Boredom dulled the usual bright golden orbs. She noticed the furball's interest in her bones, but that intrigued her for not even a full heartbeat as the she-cat's next words quickly soured the intrigue.

"Why does everyone ask me that? It's your job to figure out what makes you worth keeping. If you're the same as every other worthless nobody that begs to join my clan, then I don't see much of a reason to keep you. I have a whole den of apprentices who can do what you do, and several kits ready to learning how. You're worthless and expendable." She didn't know what about this cat caught Mistlewhisker's gaze, but if this was it, Dawnstar would have turned her away some time ago.

"Learn how to hunt a snake." She grumbles in reply, a bit annoyed with the change in topic. "Listen, furball, you're not making a convincing argument here. I'm starting to feel like you're wasting my time. There are three other clans you can try to weasle your way into or return to wherever you came from."

Black found himself quivering internally as another giant, scarred she-cat towered in front of him. Do they have like... a mother-hierarchy? The little thought did not take much to disappear. He definitely had other priorities right now, but at least this one didn't want to kill him on the spot or what. Or what.

He wasn't sure what to do, except of course, answering immediately. What could something be that it would be both... true and satisfying?

"Yes, ma'am." He replied respectfully, then sat down and curled up his tail around him as a mere way to find a bit of courage and comfort, or maybe to get a less messed-up appearance.
"I was mistakenly hunting too close to your border. I think your voice-in-command found something worth her time in the kind of prey I caught, and the fact that I showed I have the ability to learn survival skills on my own."

This might be the moment.
He took with his mouth the ferret and the crow he took from the border and left them at the Giant Ma'am's paws. Well, at least they might let me go away... But do I really want that now? He wasn't so sure anymore.

@Undertaker @Mica (sorry guys for the confusion!)

Her tattered ears stood high and attentive while listening to the cat. The survival skills didn't do much for Dawnstar these days. She's met far too many cats with the same to be impressed with the feat by now. The prey he caught did manage to overshadow the seething anger boiling in her chest at the mention of trespassing.

Her large claws slide out as she reaches to grab and inspect the prey he caught. The long-bodied weasel looked like a mink, but she doubted that he would have been able to catch a mink. A ferret, though. She didn't see them in the prey pile often, if ever. The crow was equally as fascinating. She understood why Mistlewhisker overlooked the trespassing and hunting, but still, she wouldn't let him off easy for thieving and trespassing because he could hunt.

"You're a skilled hunter for your age. I can see what drew my mate's attention to you. However, that doesn't mean I can overlook your transgressions. What's your name?"
