Sandy sounds great. I would make his parents both deceased NPCs. His mother neglected him, and his father taught him all the wrong virtues, leading him to be grumpy and depressed. I might make him a little lazy too, and he'll be disrespectful towards younger cats, secretly jealous of the privileges they had.
