the oriental walked carefully through the territory, whiskers twitching and feeling the nearby vibrations — on high alert for any nearby obstacles. ”in leaf-bare, water will typically freeze at the top first — if it is not too dense, you can use force to break it in particular spots. towards the center, usually, since deeper water freezes slower then shallow. be wary that it is dense enough to support your weight. clear, blue ice is typically the strongest. stay away from white opaque or grey ice. if it sounds hollow or dull, then it is likely weakened. rivers ‘n streams are more dangerous when it comes to breaking ice since flowing water freezes slower then still. do not even bother with them. if the ice gives out, you can get swept away underneath the unbroken ice, “ wormbite warned carefully, rolling his shoulders back with a noticeable crack. truthfully, fishing in the colder seasons were more hassle than it was worth at times.
his pawsteps came to a slower pace once they started to approach the sound of flowing water. “fortunately , new-leaf is starting to creep in which means the waters are beginning to thaw. rivers will often be the first to start flowing once more, “ he explained, leading seapaw to the river’s bank.
he took a seat about a tail-length away. ” be cautious that your shadow does not fall over the river lest the fish swim away in fear. patience is key here, when a shadow crosses over the water surface – you can also listen for it if you need to. the water splashes more loudly in specific spots when a fish is close to the surface. in addition, some can make quiet popping noises and other such noises. either way, you will want to make a cupping motion with your paw and dart it into the water before scooping the fish up from underneath to kick it up onto the river bank. “ he unsheathed his claws, listening to the sound of the water briefly.
“i will show, and then you will try, “ wormbite finished, his voice slightly raspy. he had not talked much in a while. he could only hope seapaw understood, but perhaps the apprentice was more of a visual learner.
the warrior would wait until a minnow passed by and just as he said, he darted forward and dove his paw into the water— scooping the creature into the river bank. he was swift to slice its neck before dragging it to rest in the middle of them. then, he nodded at seapaw to try.

Seapaw
he/they - 10 moons - Go with the flow
Seapaw listened intently to the talk about ice, nodding in understanding. They never thought there'd be so much to a seemingly small thing - shows how little he knows! He tried to remember it all, but made sure to commit the fact that ice could be dangerous to memory.
Thankfully they wouldn't have to be dealing with that today - as the rivers were beginning to flow again. So - number 1, no shadow. They shuffled to find a place next to Wormbite where their shadow didn't show, then listened for more. 2, listen and look - cool, he could do that. And 3: cup the fish onto shore.
He watched carefully, as a shadow below the surface was expertly caught by Wormbite. Alright - got it. Hopefully, at least, because now it was his turn. He waited till a bubbling shadow appeared once again, and dove his paw into the water. [Rolled: 9] He felt it for a second - but - oh! His paw came out of the water with no fish. Those things were fast! Perhaps they weren't cupping their paw enough? "Awh." This seemed a lot harder than land hunting - but perhaps it came with practice. "I can try again?" He asked.
