Re: [ Herb Lesson - all ages ] Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Event [#event]rookfire had not quite grown into the habit of resting in the medicine den during the day yet, still preferring the edge of the clearing to keep eyes and ears on everyone moving around, especially with the new rules now. today, however, the medicine cat apprentice had sought out the younger tom for company, something they admittedly rarely engaged in during the day, not with rookfires internal pull to keep going, patrol, hunt, gather. he didnt like to stay in one place for too long, needed the repetition of being out of camp at the same time each day and the entertainment of the world beyond the safety of the clearing. all within limits, he knew he wasnt as present as he should be and was trying to remember to stick around mossfreckle more often instead of getting lost in duties that werent his.
his 'mentors' lilting purr was met with a low rumble of his own, originating deep in his throat and escaping without his permission to serve as a clear sign of affection whilst his expression remained neutral, even though it wasnt as rare to catch the medic purring anymore, it was still reserved for one cat only and rook hoped mossfreckle knew. dark pelted form followed the more experienced medic like a shadow, settling down close enough to be brushing pelts, his own bundle of herbs placed on the ground in a similar fashion as mossfreckles.
he remained quiet as mossfreckle introduced their event. the idea was sweet and whilst something that he knew would be relevant eventually, it still made him uncomfortable. the thought of sharing valuable knowledge, even if most cats participating would forget in no time, to take a step away from being better than everyone else and risk his position. it was silly, stupid even, that after all those moons, his mind was still deadset on being valuable and doing everything in his power to be indispensable. he wouldnt be left alone to fend for himself again, yet the memories of his mother continued to haunt the medic in more ways than he realised.
after a short while, more cats than he had expected appeared to take part in the event which didnt really help the sneaking discomfort at all but also reminded him of where he stood. he was where he was supposed to be, he didnt have to fear anything and these were people looking up to him.
quietly clearing his throat, rookfire shuffled to unwrap his bundle, large leaf unfolding easily and revealing a small assortment or plants.
"as mossfreckle already introduced, we'll take a look at a pawful of herbs today following the colours of the rainbow as our theme. we'll begin with red and a herb a lot of you may already be familiar with-" white tipped paws scooped the red flower and seed up to hold them up briefly before placing them down between the medics and the crowd.
"these are a poppy and a poppy seed. as you can see, poppies are rather small, with ruffled red petals and a dark center. we only need the seeds for treatment but you collect the whole flowerheads on patrol, we dry them afterwards." the medic began, as usual having not really practiced what exactly he would say and feeling like he was stumbling over his words despite the knowledge that his voice hadnt even wavered once.
"poppy seeds are chewed in cases of shock or injury to dull the pain. while smaller doses, that being one seed for apprentices or small warriors and two for average sized warriors, will only dull the pain, for more severe injuries two to three seeds can be used to provide more relief and put the injured cat to sleep." cool grey eyes darting around the crowd yet avoiding all eyes expertly, the medic left them a moment to take in that information. "finally, never ever give a kit or nursing queen more than one poppy seed." with that, rookfire tipped his head forward slightly to let mossfreckle know he had concluded.
