Silentpaw quickly buried the rat he had caught in the ground, turning to Newtbelly. He fought to keep himself from smiling. It felt good, is he was being honest, to know that his mentor was proud. Perhaps now, he could finally make his mother proud.
And battle training was exactly what she'd want him to do.

The tortoiseshell tabby tom gave a quick, breif nod, scanning his surroundings to make sure he'd remember where he had buried the prey.

He led the two of them into the green clearing - a strangely picturesque place for battle training. Now, where to start? With Tickpaw, he'd asked him what he'd do, but that certainly wouldn't work here. Maybe they should just start out with basic moves.

"Let's start out with some basic moves before we get into it," he blinked. Silentpaw already knew how to sneak - and he was good at it - Newtbelly would love to teach him how to apply that to battle, but he had to remind himself - one thing at a time. "The front paw strike, and front paw blow."
"With the front paw blow, you keep your claws sheathed." He demonstrated, wacking his paw downwards, "and bring it down on your opponent's head." He'd never been partial to the attack - what was the point in fighting without claws? Nevertheless, it was one of the fundamentals, so he'd teach it anyway. "Is it useless? Possibly. But it's good to learn. 'Spose it's good for friendly spars, or if you're fighting a cat far weaker than yourself?"
Then for the better of the two, "The front paw strike - or forepaw slash," he demonstrated, slashing at the air with his paw. "Claws out, you slice downward with your paw. You aim this at the face or body of your opponent." He then demonstrated the two again, highlighting the differences. "So the blow's aimed at the head - claws sheathed - whilst the strike's aimed at the face or body, claws unsheathed. You wanna give them a try?"
