with an annoyed look behind her, hickorysplinter dropped down into a hunting crouch. she opened her mouth and smelled the distinct scent of mouse just ahead of her. quietly, they slunk through the underbrush and pounced on the mouse, killing it quickly with a bite to the neck.

she repeated this process with a second mouse and took both of them in her mouth, starting her way back to the deputy's hateful look. her fur bristled again and she sighed. it *was* her fault she hadn't completed the patrol, but she had been alone.
