The calico apprentice listened to every word that left her mentor's mouth. There was no way she was going to miss anything that could be even remotely useful when she was a warrior. She looked into the water again, careful to move slowly so that nothing would get too scared.

When Slatestripe finished talking, she was looking at him again. She was practically shaking in excitement as she thought of something to say, so he would know she had listened. She couldn't come up with much except for a nod.

Okay. I understand. she said, contradicting herself after she immediately asked a question. How do I strike at a fish? she said with furrowed brows. This may have been a sensible question, but she still felt a bit dumb for asking.
