“I think my stomach will explode if I put anything more into it,” he told her softly. “Can I have some poppy seeds to sleep? Maybe I’ll feel better in the morning.” He hoped he was right. He wouldn’t know what to do if he didn’t.

Fawnpaw
Hnnh. An anxious flutter unfolded in the pit of her stomach. Even though there had been no outward expression, Fawnpaw knew well enough by now that she was expected to know more. Even the cats who told her she was doing a good job... were just saying it because of her age, probably. She was still a fresh apprentice, at around nine moons old. But she didn't want to be coddled - and she also didn't want to be chastised for not knowing more. It was... difficult, to say the least.

"Of course! I'll give you two - they should help getting you into a restful sleep and hopefully will help your stomach overnight." Of course, as she went to retrieve the seeds, Fawnpaw knew quite well she had no idea if that were true or not. But hopefully it would be better than it was right now. Placing the seeds down in front of Slatestripe, she gave the warrior a soft, apologetic smile. "Do you think there is anything else you might need, Mr. Slatestripe?"

She gave a sad smile. "He was a good medicine cat. Smart, capable, and passionate with what he was doing. His apprentice, Reedpaw and another she-cat who worked with him, Morninglily, turned out fine under his guidance. She helped me after the Firefly Cove battle." She paused, frowning. "However, I can't remember a time when Snakeheart wasn't a grouch. You didn't hear this from me, but I'd always assumed he was born that way. It wasn't until after the Firefly Cove incident that I began to notice he had a sort of tension and depressing air around him."

She didn't think Snakeheart was bad. After all, when you worked in the medicine den, you wouldn't be able to get away scot-free. There were always bound to be hurts, injuries, and agony from the cats to be treated, and not all of them would be able to survive.

She peered at the gentle apprentice before her, who had been so kind and sweet with her. She felt sorry for Fawnpaw, because once she accepted her role, she would never, ever, be able to turn back.

Fawnpaw
Smart. Capable. Passionate. A light smile creased her maw as Fawnpaw listened to Lilycreek recount her impression of Snakeheart. She chuckled a little at him always having been a grouch. Some cats were just like that, but deep down the brown dappled she-cat knew that the tom had a good heart. He cared for his Clanmates - that much was obvious - and it made her feel a little more relieved. The Starcave experience had given her quite a shake, but now it felt like her paws were on solid ground once more. Sure, he hadn't been perfect. But was any cat?

Oh, Reedpaw! The young she-cat blinked, wondering if she should reveal to Lilycreek that she had ran into the former medicine cat apprentice while out in the territory a pawful of days ago. But she felt as though it was not her path to tread on - after all, she hadn't even told Pikestar or Slatewhisker about it yet. "I don't believe I've heard of the name Morninglily. Was that another one of Snakeheart's apprentices?" she inquired, trying to wrack her brain for any bells. Nothing started to ring, so perhaps it was a cat that had been in RiverClan before her time.

Fawnpaw
Another smile brightened her face as the reasoning became apparent. "Well, that butterfly is sure lucky to have you looking out for it," Fawnpaw purred in delight. It wasn't often that a kit stopped to consider healing - she certainly hadn't. Hopefully as the young tom grew into a warrior of the Clan he would retain some of that softness. "Let me know if there is anything else you need, alright Ferretkit?" She gave him a quick touch of her nose to his head before giving him a farewell wave of her tail.

The small grey and white kit swallowed roughly, trying to stiff down her mounting fears as her memories and realizations slowly filtered back to her mind. The mindless panic of confusion was retreating but it was being replaced with the deep worrying fear that she was blind, she hadn’t always been blind, she hadn’t been blind in her most recent memories. Was she going to be stuck like this? In some ways the fear of loss was deeper and stronger than the panic of unfamiliarity. She swallowed again and took in a deep breath, trying to focus on Fawnpaw’s words. An accident? Why couldn’t she remember anything beyond being in the nursery like any other morning? She shook her head. ”I…yeah…I smell…I smell you and Doeheart and…it’s kinda smelly in here…” ”In?” Heronkit’s heart skipped a half-beat as her mind made her doubt everything she thought she knew. How did she know she was in? Could the blindness be tricking her mind? But no, if she were outside there’s surely be a breeze or something. If she was with Fawnpaw, and the scents were the warm milky familiarity of the nursery so she figured she must be in the medicine den. Her whirling mind suddenly stopped icily and she felt hot tears stinging at her eyes though she refused to let any fall, as once again she was thrown back into the fear of going through this doubt and guessing for the rest of her life.

Fawnpaw
Just a small trickle of relief. That was all that life allowed her to feel before sending her hope plummeting. Heronkit could smell, which was good, but the tears that rimmed her eyes made Fawnpaw's heart sink. Allowing a purr to rumble her throat she slowly and gingerly touched her nose to Heronkit's head. "I am going to figure out why you can't see, okay? I just know there has got to be something out there. But in the meantime, I need you to be very brave for me, okay? Can you do that? I know you can, you have already been so brave."

A soft smile at Heronkit as she pulled away before her gaze lifted to Doeheart. "I am going to fix this. Heronkit will not be blind, Ms. Doeheart. I will see about going to one of the other medicine cats, to see if there is... a herb I do not know yet, or a remedy I have yet to learn. But she will not be blind. I promise." Could see... should she even be making promises like that? It was an awfully big one, especially if she couldn't keep it. But Fawnpaw knew she had to do something about it.
