Broken and Withered

[This is a thread for Mistyshade's roleplays - sometimes solo. Please do not reply unless I allow you to do so. I WILL clone her for this. VM me to join.]

Mistyshade moved forward in slow movements, setting one paw in front of the other. She was back at home, but really, what had it become? They were being bossed around by Dawnstar. As much as she hated to say it, ThunderClan was weak and pathetic. The she-cat sunk to the floor of the warriors' den, trying to shield herself from the wind. She felt broken and done for. Her green eyes scanned the den, but there was no one in sight. The molly presumed they were all in the clearing, possibly even enjoying the jumble.

Honestly, Mistyshade felt betrayed by her clan - by her home. She had no idea how this had happened. The only thing she was aware of was that Dawnstar took their clan over. She was weak from the badger she had tried to attack. It seemed to her like she had eaten leaves and rotten prey just yesterday. Her skeleton was bony; her fur pale. She did not feel healthy.

Maybe everything had finally cracked her up. She used to be a tough shell, keeping her emotions in check and not letting anyone see her feelings. Now it was obvious that she wasn't fine. The cold winds rattled her and she wrapped her tail around her body, the longing for sleep pushing through all of her other feelings. Mistyshade tried closing her eyes, but nightmares of the badger kept creeping up in her thoughts. She tore them open again. She knew she was haunted, broken and withered.

Foxpaw Training

(Hope you don't mind I got a post up for this!)

@Pheasantflight

Mistyshade felt weak on her paws as she made her way towards the apprentices' den. She forced herself to train her eyes on the floor, not the ShadowClan warriors standing in ThunderClan camp. The molly allowed herself to let out a quiet sigh. When she had returned, this had not been what she'd been expecting. Maybe she should have stopped thinking everyone was going to be fine and started considering the dangers in this world. But still. Aspenstar, losing all her lives in one go? Dogbark, mysteriously disappearing? And ShadowClan, taking over ThunderClan?

It was all unthinkable to Mistyshade. And still with all this trouble, she had to train her apprentice, Foxpaw. Her pace was brisk as she continued towards the apprentices' den. "Foxpaw," she mewed when she arrived at the entrance. "We're going to do some training. I think I owe you an explanation."

I owe you an explanation

(Sorry about this being so late)

@Jayvines

Mistyshade sat in the clearing, slowly bringing her rough tongue across her paws. She hesitated briefly before cleaning her wounded paw. The pain was sharp but only stayed for a moment. She got up, shaking out her pelt and letting the wind smoothly blow it back into place. The molly padded towards the warrior's den - well, more of limped towards the den - hoping to see Sparrowflight. She certainly owed the she-cat an apology. Mistyshade had taken Sparrowflight in as an adoptive daughter and then just... disappeared.

When she was in the den, Mistyshade set her paws down, letting her injured one hover slightly above the ground. It still smelled slightly like blood and flesh but Sundust had been able to heal the majority of it. Honestly, she was still glad she still had the paw. "Sparrowflight," the warrior meowed quietly, not wanting to wake anyone else. "I wanted to talk to you about my disappearance."

~ Sparrowflight ~

Eyes scrunched shut in a restless sleep, Sparrowflight was awoken rather suddenly by the unpleasantly familiar scent of iron. Green eyes snapped open as she began to heft herself to her paws, ready for whatever seemed to have happened, but a familiar voice froze her in her tracks. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, she turned her head towards the voice as a tumultuous flow of emotions bubbled up to the surface.

"Mistyshade?..." her voice was hoarse as she forced the name out of her jaws in a whisper, before turning around fully.

There she was. Her mother, back from wherever she had gone and apparently injured (although the linger scent of herbs gave her some consolation that Sundust must have already looked at it). Opening her mouth to speak once more, the molly abruptly shut it again before delicately stepping her way out of the den. She desperately needed to hear this 'explanation', but it wouldn't do to wake up the rest of her peers in the process.

Making her way to a secluded spot in the clearing, and hoping Mistyshade followed, Sparrowflight settled onto her haunches before forcing her face into a neutral expression. "Where in the stars did you go?... Did... Did you see Brightpaw or Tulippaw?"

The worry and stress she had been simply stuffing down for the past few moons was finally beginning to crack through. She hoped desperately that her sisters were ok. Stars, she'd barely gotten to know them and poor Tulippaw was blind. She couldn't be faring well if she was all by herself.

Mistyshade
For @Jayvines

The molly made an effort to not let salty water drop down her eyelids, but it was no use. She was unable to stop the tears from coming. Relief had briefly flooded through Mistyshade at the sight of her adoptive daughter, but now it was replaced by worry. Sparrowflight sounded hoarse and gruff... Not like the cat she used to know. She was suddenly realising how much she had missed her clan, her family.

Mistyshade followed Sparrowflight into the clearing, sitting down beside her. She listened as the molly spoke, asking questions about Tulippaw and Brightpaw, plus where Misty had been. Wait what? She jumped up, the impact making her wince as she awkwardly shifted to the side. "What do you mean?" she asked in a hollow voice. "Tulippaw (Flowerkit?!) and Brightpaw... Aren't... Here? I... I did not even catch a glimpse of them."

Mistyshade sat back down, relaxing her limp. "I was foolish." the she-cat mewed, her eyes trained on her adoptive daughter. "I tried taking on a badger all by myself. Is there even something to do that is more foolish? I dare say no. I got a good move in, but so did the badger. I fled, left to face my injuries and an infected, torn paw. Honestly I'm glad I even found my way back to ThunderClan."

She sighed, dearly hoping Sparrowflight would understand. "Sparrowflight... ummm... Do you... forgive me?" The words came out raspy. "I... I understand if you don't." Mistyshade swallowed, carefully examining the cat that was in front of her.

Her ears drooped slightly as her mother stated that she hadn't even known they were missing as well. She could only hope and pray to Starclan that they were possibly together and taking care of each other. As her mother began to explain her absence, a whole mix of emotions flooded her.

How could she be so FOOLISH! It was an awful idea to attempt taking on a badger by herself; a task that was usually carried out by a whole patrol of cats. Her tail twitched once as her mind mulled this over, but the frustration was slowly being overcome by relief. Her mother was back, that was all that mattered. Hopefully her younger sisters would return as well (and perhaps a certain tom who had seemed to disappeared) then all would be... mostly well.

A hefty sigh escaped her jaws as Mistyshade asked for her forgiveness, and she pushed herself up onto her paws to approach her. "Of course I do Mistyshade," she murmured, bumping her head against her adoptive mother's shoulder with a tired smile. "Just don't do anything like that ever again, or I'll have to stick you in the elder's den so Ridgeclaw can make sure you don't go disappearing on me again."

I was a joke... Except it wasn't really. But for now her mother was back, and that was all that mattered to her.

Mistyshade returned the bump to the head Sparrowflight gave her, a weak smile forming on her lips. "Thank you, Sparrow," she meowed quietly, noticing that her daughter had said nothing more about Tulippaw and Brightpaw. "I... is Newtheart here, still?" she asked, tilting her head. She had briefly forgotten about him, with her thoughts being clouded and her suffering from a minor concussion, but now his name came back to her.

"Even if he... isn't," the molly choked out. "He was a good father while he was here, right?"

Mistyshade attempted a light chuckle at Sparrowflight's "joke", yet it seemed mildly serious. "Don't worry, I won't be so foolish again. The elders den? No, I don't think so. I'm not that old." It felt good to be sarcastic again, but that was only one step back to normal clan life.

"Sparrowflight, have you been doing okay? You look tired and worn out. I know that feeling. If clan life is wearing you out too much, just take some breaks in between. Rest. Also... I wanted to ask you about Bucksta- er, Buckbranch. He's back? And how did Aspenstar die? This is all very confusing to me. Apologies if I'm wearing you out even more."

A huff of a laugh escaped her as her mother returned the bump, but her expression faded back to uncertainty when she asked about Newtheart. "I haven't seen him since just after Brightpaw and Tulippaw left... Perhaps he is taking care of them."

Yes. It would make sense if he had gone out in search of his daughters, even if it was an unannounced excursion.

"I'm sure he'll make his way back soon, just like you. And... I'd like to think he was a good father, don't you fret about that."

Her tone softened as she continued to speak. Her mother had clearly been put through the ringer recently, and deserved some rest. But her? No, she couldn't rest more than necessary right now. There was still work to be done, stragglers to bring home, and a certain group of occupiers that needed to be ousted from their territory.

"I'm fine mother," she chuffed, pulling a smile onto her face as she spoke. "I've just been busy with... well everything recently. Starclan seems to have given Buckbranch another chance to rejoin us here, so I hope he'll be around for a while yet. It is a little odd to be on patrol with a previous leader, but he's got a good head on his shoulders and cares about his clan very much."

She silently hoped that the recent kerfuffle on their border patrol hadn't changed that, but as that was NONE of her business she kept that from her story and moved on to the last topic.

"Aspenstar met... A rather unfortunate fate while defending Shiningskies from a coyote. It ripped all 9 of her lives from her... Thunderclan has been... Well its been a touch more messy than usual, as I'm sure you have gathered."

Mistyshade sighed, furrowing her eyebrows. "Yes. I'm sure he's taking care of them," she replied, more to comfort herself than Sparrowflight. Plus, Newtheart was a responsible tom so he surely would look after her kits - right. "That's good to hear. I won't fret anymore, I promise," she meowed, a light chuckle forming on her face. She realized how weird the motion felt. She hadn't laughed in a while.

As Sparrowflight answered the next question, Mistyshade watched closely, intent green eyes settled on her adoptive daughter. Sparrow's wealth was very important to the mother.

"It's great to know that you are doing good," she mewed, watching Sparrowflight smile. "Yeah. It certainly does make sense that you have been busy. Just... Don't to too much, okay? Once, the only thing I would do was hunt the whole day and then return to my nest, standing up early at dawn. What did it bring me? Nothing. I just don't want you to wear yourself out too much."

Mistyshade frowned, hoping Sparrowflight would follow those directions. They were important. She did not want anyone to go through the pain she once had. "Oh. It does make sense that StarClan gave Buckbranch another chance. He was a very loyal leader. He actually handled my rejoining... Certainly, he seems to care about his clan very much."

As much as the warrior did too, she still couldn't believe she had been so foolish as to try and take on a badger all by herself. Maybe it had been to protect her clan, but she still should have asked for help. ThunderClan camp had been nearby. Mistyshade's ears pricked in interest as Sparrowflight talked about Aspenstar. Apparently the young leader had met a very unfortunate death.

"I have to say, I feel bad for Aspenstar. That is a very miserable fate to have met and she was a young leader. Giving her life for a clanmate? That's noble," Mistyshade breathed.
