Magpiepaw sat loafed in the middle of Shadowclan territory, half of herself nearly invisible in the dark shade due to her unusual pelt color. But that only proved that she was awesome, awesomely different!

She was probably the only cat in the whole world who looked like this. That was a sign from the Stars themselves, she was sure of it.

As she quietly groomed herself she thought about grabbing a frog or two.

Partly for the joy of providing for her clan but mostly for her own gain. Because who doesn't like tearing up annoying frogs. Magpiepaw certainly did!

Those stupid slimy things could get eaten by as many cats as possible and Magpiepaw wouldn't even feel an ounce of pity. That's what those glob-faced-noise-machines deserved!

HAHAHA!

The newly made apprentice Gracklepaw padded through the ShadowClan territory. These past few days seemed like a dream to him. He'd finally decided to ask to join a Clan and just so happened to meet Dawnstar, who let him into ShadowClan! How lucky could he have gotten! He couldn't wipe the dorky smile off his face as he thought about it.

He'd dreamed of the Clans since he was a kit, and now he was a part of one! He wasn't too sure of all the rules and whatnot yet, but he was making an effort to learn. He was no longer a loner, wandering from place to place. He had a purpose and goals now.

The territory was so different from anywhere else he'd been. The marshy wetland felt so squishy and weird under his pads. It almost tickled a little, and the feeling of mud within his toes made him squirm a bit. This would definitely take some time to get used to. Not to mention the maze of pine trees that he had no clue how to navigate yet.

Maybe it wasn't such a great idea to try to explore the territory without a warrior. What if he broke a rule?! Were apprentices allowed to leave the camp alone?! His heart started pounding rapidly in fear as his anxieties grew. What if Dawnstar kicked him out?! He just joined the Clan and he'd already screwed up!

In his panic, Gracklepaw tromped quickly though the marsh, head whipping back and forth as he tried to find the scent or some sort of trail to the camp. It was quite obvious from his frantic behaviour that he wasn't used to Clan life.

Just then he spotted Magpiepaw. The apprentice was loafing around, alone, seemingly just lazing and enjoying herself. He stopped as he watched her kill some frogs boredly. Woah. She just killed two frogs without even trying.

Did she kill them just for the sake of it? Or perhaps would she put them on the- what was it called? Prey pile? Wait. Did Clan cats eat free frogs??? The thought of devouring something so slimy and gross, irked Gracklepaw. He immediately felt sick at the thought.

None the less Gracklepaw bounded over with a friendly smile, still slightly nervous, but feeling a little better now that he'd found a fellow apprentice. "Hello! Uhm, I'm a little lost, I'm new here- sorry. My name's Grackle! Oh- I mean, it's Gracklepaw now."

Magpiepaw swiftly flicked her ears up at the upcoming noise, her muscles tensing.

She was ready. She was so ready to claw this snot faced---

Oh.

The apprentice immediately relaxed herself when she saw the Graklepaw staring back at her. She was just about to claw an apprentice! How embarrassing! If she kept that up she'd probably have to stay in her den for a whole moon.

But I did do something right, Magpiepaw countered, her narrowed gaze softening as she looked at Graklepaw. I was ready to fight to the death, just like a true warrior. Because I'm awesome, and I'll never be anything but that.

Magpiepaw let silence linger between the two of them as she shook some slimy bits of frog off of her paws.

So what if she was making this awkward? Never ment too!

"Lost? Well, lucky for you, I know this place like the back of my paw!" Magpiepaw grinned toothily, the tip of her tail rising proudly. "I can take you anywhere. Aren't I just so cool like that?"

She straightened up into a sit, her frame noticably smaller than the newer apprentice.

Gracklepaw's eyes flickered from Magpiepaw's face to the frog guts she was playing with. That was kind of disgusting, yet he found it cool how casually she played with the frogs she'd killed. She must be a super skilled apprentice!! Gracklepaw thought to himself.

"You know this whole territory like the back of your paw? That's awesome! How'd you memorize it? This place is maze of trees!" The black tom rambled with a grin. "And you do seem pretty cool." He agreed. He had to make himself look cool too, instead of some dorky loser! So he puffed his chest out and straightened up to make himself look taller and bigger, holding his head up high like a real, proud, warrior.

(Nooo! It's fine! Life comes before some silly little forest cats^^)

Pretty cool? Magpiepaw's maw split into a smile, her oddly sharp bottom teeth poking out. Finally! Oh my goodness, it took someone MOONS to figure it out, but Graklepaw got it in a few conversations! I AM VERY cool.

Her pelt burned with pride as the newer apprentice complemented her. Perhaps she'd like him around.

"Well, I'd argue the trees are the easy part," Magpiepaw explained, padding over to a nearby tree. She gave it a quick sniff and paused for a few heartbeats as she tried to decipher it.

Yep, that was a Shadowclan scent alright.

"They mark these living logs with their pee. Gross right? Yeah, I totally get it because I think so too. But, it'll help you all around the territory. A Shadowclan cat's scent always reekes of pines and morning dew."

Her twinkling eyes flicked back to Graklepaw before she began swiping her paws across the snow littered dirt, trying to get rid of those cursed frog intestines. Ewwww...

Despite of the flash of disgust that rippled across her face, she managed to continue on. "Knowing the scent of your clan will lead you right back to it."

She opened her mouth to say that's she's gotten lost in these woods as well, but she quickly closed it. She didn't wanna loose her VERY MUCH NEEDED "cool" title.

That was something she needed to cling onto.

“Really?! The trees are easy for you?! But they’re so tall, and they all look the exact same!” He remarked, looking starstruck at her ability to navigate the forest. Stupid Grackle! Of course she can navigate the forest - she’s a Clan cat! She’s lived in ShadowClan all her life! He thought to himself. She probably learned super quickly too.

He tilted his head as she began to speak of how they marked their territory. “Oh! I’ve heard of that before!” There were a few loners and kittypets who did it. Plus tons of dogs. “I guess it makes sense that you guys smell like pines and marsh, since that’s where you live. It’s so different here from anywhere else I’ve been! All the cities and forests I’ve wandered through have never had ground this squishy and wet.” He commented, flexing his claws in the mix of marsh and snow.

It wasn’t really a pleasant feeling. In fact, he found it kind of gross to feel the slushy snow and mud mixed together. Being a ShadowClan cat would definitely take some getting used to.

“So, have you ever been in a battle before?” He asked eagerly. He knew it was childish and immature, but he couldn’t help but ask. Dawnstar had mentioned how important loyalty and fighting was, and the question had been gnawing at him. He’d heard all the legends and tales of the glorious life of Clan cats, and he was dying to know if Magpiepaw had gotten into a fight. He still wasn’t a hundred percent sure how the ranks and Clans worked, but in his mind someone as cool as Magpiepaw had surely been in a battle before.

Magpiepaw paused for a moment to chew on Gracklepaw's remarks, their words flowing out of their maw faster than dirty river water.

She watched quietly as she noticed the young apprentice shifting their paws uncomfortably in the icy wet ground. She could relate to that ALL too well, marshes absolutely sucked.

After fully digesting his words, she finally responded, her tail twitching excitedly. Battle was exactly what her claws longed for. Though, she knew she wouldn't stand two seconds in the heat of a one on one battle. She hadn't even finished her training!

So much for that slog Willowwest. Magpiepaw thought bitterly. But it was okay, because she'd picked up a few techniques on her own.

"Well, no..." Magpiepaw said truthfully. "But I should've! Really should've! I bet all the whiskers on your muzzle that I could kick the snot out of any cat who dares cross Shadowclan! Ha ha!"

Magpiepaw said that with her whole chest, attempting to raise her height proudly, but to no avail, as she had no height.

Though, her curiosity was enhanced by Gracklepaw's description of life as a rouge. What in the name of Starclan was a city? And life without water sloshing around their paws? Okay, the sloshing she wouldn't miss, but the question still stood. What the HECK is a CITY???

Magpiepaw tilted her head curiously. "A... City??" The word felt horribly wrong on her tongue, like it was some ancient language that most cats on Earth had completed forgotten about.

“City? Well, I guess not all cats call it that.” He said, giving her a sheepish grin. He’d experienced similar things when he’d met Dawnstar. Clan cats seemed to have a different language with different words for things, just like loners and kittypets did. “Basically, it’s where the No-Furs live! Er, I’ve heard lots of names for No-Furs too. Some call ‘em Twolegs, Upwalkers, Housefolk, it all depends on the cat I guess.”

“There are tons of monsters and everything’s gloomy and gray and made of stone. But it’s not stone - it’s cold, and unnatural. They have tons of dens there. From what I understand they have some dens for sleeping, and some for prey, and then some for other stuff. I used to know a cat who was an expert on No-Furs! He taught me all about the city, while I was there, I mean. It’s super different from the forest, but some of them have trees and plants and stuff though!”

Gracklepaw rambled on and on about the city. It was one of the many placed he’d “lived” in. Although lived was a strong word. He’d sorta just passed through and hung out there till he got bored. Just like with everywhere else.

“There are also so many smells! And so many No-Furs! It’s so strange!”

Ah, Magpiepaw thought. Two-legs

She'd never seen one before, but she knew to stay away from them and their furless bodies. Despite how harmless their stature was described to be, many cats still feared them and what they could do.

She wasn't sure why though. She would claw the face out of a two-leg any day! No hesitation!

Magpiepaw listened intently as Gracklepaw continued to speak about this mysterious "city". It sounded horrible, but it got her invested regardless.

The place Gracklepaw described felt like it belonged in another planet, heck another UNIVERSE. But was probably only a weeks walk.

"Smells of what?" Magpiepaw pushed on. This was probably the stillest she ever stayed for any cat, especially in a long conversation like this. She hated elders for running their mouths so much, so how come she actually listened when Gracklepaw rambled on.

She flicked a nat away from her ear. She'd figure it out eventually. Maybe she just liked the way he described things. Ha! Take that, elders!

"Everything was stone you said?" Magpiepaw shuttered at the thought. Stone heated up rather quickly in the summer, and got all cold and slippery in leaf-bare. She couldn't fathom how painful it must've been to live there and walk on grassless ground.

"Smells of call kinds of things! Cats, dogs, No-Furs, crowfood, some prey, and weird smells too." He meowed. His amber eyes twinkled as he described the city as best as he could. He still had a limited understanding of No-Furs and their complex cities, but he loved being able to talk about his travels and adventures outside of the Clans.

"There were so many smells it was overwhelming! There were things that smelled good and things that smelled rotten and horrible! There were also many different animals too. Racoons. They're kinda like cats, but they're tails are fluffier and they got these little masks and rings and like to eat crowfood. They were mean. And so many No-Furs that would walk dogs. The dogs didn't even do anything. They just walked." He described enthusiastically.

He loved being able to share his stories with another cat who was actually interested too. "And yeah. Like I said. Everything's made of stone. There are a few patches of grass and trees, but there's so much stone. They have little stone dens, and tons of them! And tons of lights too. I call them starsticks. Because they look like stars on sticks. They use stars everywhere!" He exclaimed.

The bright eyed cat continued rambling excited, telling his stories with great enthusiasm and expressions. He was very animated and lively, getting lost in the details. "Once, a very old kittypet told me a story. He told me that No-furs learned how to fly. So they flew up to the sky, and began stealing stars. When they steal stars they bring them back down to the ground, and use them to like up their dens. That's how they get starsticks and hanging stars." He explained.

It all sounded so ridiculous.

"Haha! Stars? Stole them?" she was more intrigued than anything. Imagine how much power these two-legs have if they can capture stars.

Has silverpelt sparkled less lately? Magpiepaw wished it was night so she could tell. Then she got angry, her bristling fur making her look almost normally sized.

My dad's up there.

Magpiepaw knew good and well that if these idiots ---that liked to live in stone dens for a reason--- where stealing the stars that lined silverpelt, who knows how many important clan cats they'd manage to snag.

Why couldn't they just go underground and get the Darkforest cats!? NOBODY liked THEM!

Magpiepaw hissed defiantly, her back arched. "Were?" she demanded. "Were can I find these FAMILY STEALING LUNATICS.

She was ready. Sooo ready.

Gracklepaw's ears flattened and he took a step back as he watched Magpiepaw's reaction. His black fur got all ruffled up and his blue eyes were filled with confusion as he stared at her awkwardly.

Why was she getting so upset? She didn't seem to like No-Furs, did she? He watched as she grew more frustrated watching with her fur bristling up and her face showing she was visibly upset.

That's when Gracklepaw began to panic. He'd just made friends with Magpiepaw, and she was awesome! He didn't know anyone else in the Clan yet, and now he was gonna lose the first person he met because of talking about stars.

Stupid, stupid Grackle! He thought to himself feeling panicked and guilty for causing Magpiepaw so much distress.

Then he heard her yell about No-Furs being family stealers. He did a double take as he asked "Wait- what? Family stealers? You're related to stars?! How?!" He asked, astounded.

Her brown eyes widened in shock, amusement replacing her boiling fury. She looked quizzically at Gracklepaw before reminding herself that he was new to clan life and how things worked in general. Plus, his stupidly pitiful face made him hard to yell at, so Magpiepaw had to shut her trap eventually.

"Oh, Grackle!" Magpiepaw laughed, the hard edges that formed on her face softening. "You don't know anything about Starclan, do you?

"Allow me to be super boring for a moment, m'kay?" She waddled rather ungracefully up to the new apprentice. She quickly lectured about all she knew about Starclan and life after death. She explained how only the best warriors got to got to Starclan and how the meanie-frog-faces had to stay in the swampy Dark Forest. She deliberately left out her father's death.

No way was she about to cry. She only ever cried once, and she wasn't planning on doing it again.

She explained how each cat who died was represented in a star and blah blah blah, yada yada.

"You see," Magpiepaw lectured on as she spun a dry leaf between her toe beans. "If these good for nothing furless cats are stealing stars then that's a big problem, HUGE! Not that I can't take them down, I'd slash all their throats if I had to. I wouldn't even feel slightly sorry for them!"

Initially he felt his cheeks heat up, as his fur rose from embarrassment. Why was she laughing at him? Did he say something wrong? Did he say something stupid?! Did she not want to be his friend?! That got him even more panicked, as he waited uncomfortably for her to (hopefully) explain why she laughed at him.

Thankfully, she did. She asked him about... StarClan? Wait, how many Clans were there??? He's only heard of four. There was ShadowClan, LightningClan, and... WindyClan... And... He didn't remember the last one.

Then she began giving the whole talk about StarClan; which was apparently the Clan's version of the afterlife. He'd heard other cats talk of similar things before, telling tales of the afterlife and what would happen, but it never felt so real. This loners and kittypets had never faced the harsh realities of Clan life. At least, not to the same extreme.

It was... intriguing to imagine starry ancestors, living amongst the sky and stars. It sounded peaceful, and nice. It would encourage Clan cats to be good. Meanwhile evil cats would go to the Dark Forest, a bad place filled with villains and malice. He couldn't help but wonder if he'd go to StarClan one day. He wasn't Clanborn. He wasn't even sure if he believed in StarClan. But he shook the thoughts away as Magpiepaw talked about how bad No-Furs were as star stealers.

He felt bad for upsetting her, and tried to be empathetic to her. He'd never had any major deaths affect him. He'd dealt with death, but he'd never cared too much. He'd feel better, sure, but it never left a lasting impression.

"Well, they could be wrong, Magpiepaw. It's just a silly story I heard from an old friend of mine. But what does he know! He was just a loner. He was old too. His memory may be lacking... I don't know for sure." He tried to reason offering her a sympathetic look.

Gracklepaw wasn’t sure how to react to Magpiepaw’s yowls at first, but eventually he began to laugh at her display. He found it amusing, the way she confidently yowled at the sky, unafraid of what others might think, and just having fun. That confidence was very cool. It made him want to be like her. Gracklepaw always had to force himself to be and act confident, but for Magpiepaw it seemed to come so naturally. Maybe all Clan cats were like this. ShadowClanners like Magpiepaw had reasons t be confident. He would find reasons to be confident too.

But her couldn’t join in with her. He didn’t want No-Furs to die. Not really. Grackle didn’t really want anybody to die. But Clan cats seemed to hate No-Furs, and Grackle couldn’t deny they’d fed him a few times when he was a starving kit. They’d left little… “bowls” of food for him, filled with tiny hard pellets. The food never tasted great, but he would’ve starved without it. He was grateful for that, and he figured maybe not all No-Furs were heartless monsters. Some of them could be nice.

He perked up when he heard rabbit. He’d seen the fluffy creatures before. They were quite timid, and they were fast. “No. I’ve seen ‘em before, but they were always too fast for me to catch. I used to chase ‘em sometimes. Wait. Have you caught a rabbit before?” He asked, grinning at the idea of finally being able to catch one. His eyes gleamed and he nodded back at her. “Heck yeah!.”

"Have I caught rabbit? Plenty times! The scent is practically engraved in my nose." She was only half lying, a harmless little white lie. She had eaten and caught rabbits before, but they were quite tricky, their quick unpredictable turns always throwing Magpiepaw's small body off balance.

She remembered tumbling down through blades of grass far more than the earthy taste of rabbit meat. Most hunts were unsuccessful, but today would be different. She had a really odd cat to impress, and she wasn't about to let all that falling stop her. Stars forbid she look like a fool.

Guessing by the way Gracklepaw straightened up when she spoke of catching one, he must really like rabbit. Or the mystery of finally eating one. Magpiepaw didn't think that was a bad choice of favorite prey by any means, but she liked birds a lot more. For some reason, they were far easier for her to catch. Since she was so small, she had little to no wind-resistance, which was probably one of her favorite things about herself.

"I'll show you were the burrows are, they'll never see us coming! C'mon, I know just the place." She grinned excitedly before trotting off through the forest, making sure that the odd city-like scent of Gracklepaw was still available to her nose.

This was gonna be fun. Tons of fun!

"Dang!! I can't believe you've caught them before! You must be super fast if you're able to catch a rabbit. They were always waaaaay too fast for me!" He replied with a big smile, as she told her tale. Gracklepaw was impressed, though he seemed to be impressed by practically everything Magpiepaw said, so it was pretty easy to get used to his blue eyes that always seemed to gleam with awe.

The tom scampered after her with a grin, catching up to his new friend. He was ecstatic about the prospect of catching a rabbit with Magpiepaw, and hoped that maybe he could catch one himself. Maybe then she'd be impressed by him too.

Once he caught up to the smaller apprentice he matched her trotting pace as he began to talk again. "Do lots of rabbits live here on ShadowClan territory. I always thought they preferred the moors and forests, not the marshy weirdness of ShadowClan!"

She shrugged. "I've been told that they appear much more in Windclan territory, y'know, where the plains are? So, they're a rare sight honestly. But it's SOOOO worth it!"

She trotted on through dappled sunlight, her paws unbothered by the muddy ground. While rabbits were uncommon, burrows seemed to be something Magpiepaw always remembered. Were they most times empty? Yes, but maybe with the change of leaf-bare to new-leaf would give them some promising options.

Do rabbits even migrate?

The young apprentice suddenly halted, dropping low, her belly to the ground. She gave Gracklepaw a short nudge with the tip of her tail, a low hiss cutting through the humid air.

"I think I saw something..." It was an unmistakable flash of white that entered her vision. The creature slowed to a stop to clean itself, their long ears high and alert.

She unthreshed her claws. "Okay," she whispered, a smile heard in her soft voice. "We found one! Awesome!"

So WindyClan- correction, WindClan lives on the plains. Interesting. Is that why they were called WindClan? Because the plains were windy? That'd make sense. "So WindClan hunt rabbits a lot? And rabbits aren't often found here? Okay, okay... I think I got it." He commented in reply, trotting alongside Magpiepaw.

"Do rabbits taste good?" He questioned, tilting his head curiously as he continued to leisurely stroll beside Magpiepaw, they must if you think it's worth it!" He answered his own question.

He wasn't really paying attention, and just happily trotted beside her, so when the apprentice jabbed him with her tail he let out a short and startled: "Oofmp!" As he noticed her drop into a crouch he followed suit, whispering into her ear: "What are we looking for-"

He was cut off when he noticed the rabbit too, and forgot all about talking to Magpiepaw. Instead he stayed focused on catching the rodent that hopped obliviously, before pausing to bathe itself. Now was their chance. His blue eyes gleamed as they flicked Magpiepaw, then back to the rabbit. Now was the time that they'd catch the stupid and fast creature together. His gaze was narrowed and serious as Gracklepaw readied for the catch.

Her whole body tensed as she stared the rabbit down, it's white pelt having "Come at me! If you dare." Written all over it. It was so unaware, like it knew it was fast, like it knew that it could send these two very much better than them apprentices hurled in the bushes.

But that wasn't an option. Not for Gracklepaw and most CERTAINLY not for HER.

She unsheathed her claws, her hackles raising. Her fur spiked up as if she were hit by lightning as adrenaline filled her.

She clicked the two oddly shaped teeth to her top row in short rhythmic patterns, almost as if she were trying to chatter to the birds.

Pause.

Magpiepaw crouched lower.

Wait for it...

The rabbit looked up and turned, it's pink slashable nose twitching anxiously.

Run!

Magpiepaw sprang up, her tail high and curled wildly. Her paws were outstretched as she swiped at the rabbits eyes.

The creature wailed as blood started spilling from were it's iris once was. Magpiepaw just smiled. She'd actually managed to hit it!

In wild and unpredictable horror, the small animal twisted left and right, it's paws kicking up leaves and dirt as it sprinted.

Someone had to get it's nose. If it can see or smell them it's as helpless as a kit.

The tom watched with eager eyes as Magpiepaw dropped down then began to hunt with expert technique. His blue eyes grew wider as he watched hee spring onto the rabbit. And so the hunt began.

He watched Magpiepaw tussle with the rabbit as the creature flailed and shrieked in pain, and took that as a signal of some sort. They hadn’t planned it out at all, and honestly Gracklepaw wasn’t sure if Magpiepaw would even need his help, but they were going to catch that rabbit, no matter what. Gracklepaw had his mind set on it. He refused to let the silly rodent win, like they’d always won. No. He had to catch it, and he wasn’t alone this time.

The black tom slunk around in the grass circling the scene as Magpiepaw and the rabbit were preoccupied. If that rabbit tried to escape, he’d chase it down. His eyes were narrowed, it was like he had tunnel vision, only able to watch the scene ahead. The focused tom waited, and watched as the rabbit wriggled away from Magpiepaw. Its white fur was bloody, and it was missing an eye. His heartbeat sped up as the rabbit began to bolt away.

You’re not getting away that easy rodent.

Unfortunately for Gracklepaw, the rabbit ran the opposite direction from him, meaning it got a head start, but none the less, the tom began sprinting after it, determination gleaming in his eyes as he chased it.

He was right on its tail, literally, when he launched himself onto it.

Was that the sound of his heartbeat, or the rabbits?

He wasn’t sure, but this bunny was one heck of a fighter. It squirmed and kicked in his grasp. He wasn’t giving up, but the rabbit wasn’t either. He managed to get a grip and sink his claws in, but not without the rabbit kicking him first. Before he could even blink and process what happened the rabbit had scratched him right above him his nose. He hissed in pain as his nose stung, and delivered the finishing blow by biting its neck.

Magpiepaw ran right next to Gracklepaw as he sprinted towards the rabbit, his dark pelt only a fuzzy blur in her line of site.

She cut through the trees and made some shortcuts, gaining a clear view on the rabbit while sheltered by inky shade and thickets. Ripples of water echoed from her paws as she thundered through territory. No need to be quiet if your meal already saw you.

Just in case Gracklepaw missed it, she'd be only a few fox-lengths in front of him, ready to kill what was left of the already half blind rabbit.

Her paws kicked on, her breathing becoming quick and hollow as her pace slowed. She looked scornfully at her small stubby legs as she began to fall back behind Gracklepaw's strides.

Magpiepaw wasn't sure how far in territory they were now, but she didn't give it another thought as silence suddenly filled the humid air. That was enough to quicken her pace.

She followed Gracklepaw's scent trail, then realizing how much she had slowed down and how much land Gracklepaw had been able to clear.

What she saw next made her smile with all her weird fang like teeth.

She trotted up to Gracklepaw, trying to smoother how puffy her breathing was, but to no avail. "Did you kill it?" She panted, her fur now ruffled and frizzy with fallen leaves and wind. Guessing by the glossy red on his muzzle, he had. Her smile only widened. She couldn't contain her joy as she noticed the slit of blood that traced Gracklepaw's nose. She practically squealed with excitement.

"You're first battle scar!" Magpiepaw gasped, surprised that she hadn't felt the least bit jealous. Hm... I guess she actually did like him around. He was tons weird, yes, but he was obviously good at hunting and had stamina. Not as much as HER of course, but a good amount. "It looks so impressive, you should be proud! And now, we FEAST! HA HA! Take THAT you slimy little rodent!"

She gave her friend a soft nudge, as if inviting him to take the first bite. As much as Magpiepaw loved rabbit, he'd never tried it before. He deserved this.

Gracklepaw blinked once. Then he blinked twice. He’d actually caught and killed the rabbit. It all happened so fast. He was darting towards it, and next thing he knew he had killed it and it had scratched him right above his nose.

His nose twitched as red droplets trickled down, and he felt a stinging feeling. He winced in pain, flicking his ears from the discomfort of it and dropping the rabbit to the floor when Magpiepaw had run over. When he met her gaze and saw the way her eyes shined he couldn’t help but smile back at her, which soon turned into a grin. “I killed it.” He confirmed, as the realization began to hit him.

His grin just grew wider as Magpiepaw complimented him and mentioned that he’d gotten his first battle scar from the rabbit. “Yeah! Well, not my first, but my first as a ShadowClan cat!” He chuckled.

He flicked his torn right ear subconsciously, thinking back to how he’d gotten it torn anyways. He was such a coward back then. He was running away with that loner on his tail, yowling and snarling, until he was eventually cornered. He’d stayed huddled in the corner of the fences, as the bigger cat attacked. He’d just trembled and let the loner scar him. He couldn’t remember why anymore; all he remembered was that burning desire to be faster, stronger, better. Maybe now he’d get that desire.

He wouldn’t be a coward anymore.

“You really think it’s that impressive?” He asked, feeling his chest swell at her words. He blushed and his grin became more sheepish. It felt nice. It felt nice to have someone else be in awe of him for once. Especially someone like Magpiepaw. Magpiepaw was a very good friend. “I couldn’t have done it without your help. You found it, and blinded it first.” He meowed in response.

He admired the rabbit for a moment before taking the first bite of the rabbit. He chewed and swallowed it. It was good. Really good. And it was even better after the hectic chase and eventual victory.

"That's right, I've helped you SOOOOO much Gracklepaw. Now you owe me twenty compliments. C'mon, I'm waiting." She joked as she watched the new apprentice become slightly more sheepish as their conversation continued. Was that red tinting their cheeks? No, that was blood, definitely blood.

Her eyes quickly shot up to his torn ear, surprised that she hadn't noticed it before. Urg! She'd been staring at this weird cat ALL DAY and she still never noticed it? She wrinkled her nose at it, questioning if Gracklepaw had been a bit tougher than she initially thought.

However he got that scar, he must've faced his opponent head on, or at least gathered the courage to face them. That other explanation definitely fit Gracklepaw a bit more.

She must look soooooo boring and scarless. Nothing about her screamed, "AHHH INTIMIDATING!! RUN FOR YOU LIVES, AHHHHHHHHH!" especially with her size. Magpiepaw puffed up her chest. What was she talking about? She was already super awesome at what she did, no cat could even match her confidence! She was speed, she was stealth, she was the cat who blinded that rabbit for Starclan's sake!

She watched with a stupid little grin on her face as Gracklepaw finally tasted rabbit. She couldn't imagine how much pride he felt. After he took his share, Magpiepaw leaned down and at a few bites as well. It had been so long, far too long. She missed it, missed it a wholeee lot.

"We should probably bring some back for the clan," Magpiepaw remembered. So what if they ate prey before feeding the elders? Those bags of bones could wait! Plus, they'd probably bring back ten times the prey they ate, no doubt about it.

He chuckled as she joked about twenty compliments. “Twenty?! That’s a whole lot of compliments Magpiepaw! How about I give you one, since you gave me one. I think you’re really fun to hang out with. There! That’s my compliment.” He laughed, bumping her back playfully.

The tom leaned back down to take another bite of the rabbit with a content grin. This was nice. He usually ate mice, so the change was much appreciated on his end. And it felt good knowing they’d worked so hard to catch it. They deserved the prey.

When he’d halfway chewed it Magpiepaw spoke up, commenting about how they should bring prey back to the Clan. He froze and his eyes widened in alarm. “Wait- were we not supposed to be eating already?!” He exclaimed, looking like a deer in the headlights at the thought of breaking an important rule. Would they get in trouble?! Would Dawnstar kick him out of the Clan?!

Magpiepaw winced as Gracklepaw looked down at her with wild eyes.

"Don't worry! I'll cover for you, I've wiggled my way through many situations before. If we do get caught, which we definitely won't, I'll take all the hits for ya." She shrugged as if to brush away the issue. She'd never gotten any suspicious looks, as long as she brought back whatever was lost.

Plus, Gracklepaw deserved this victory! He'd caught that rabbit fair and square, to the DARKFOREST ANY CAT SHALL GO FOR POSSIBLY DISAGREEING WITH HER!

"We'll slip right past their noses, trust me!" She smiled widely, chunks of rabbit meat seen wedged in-between her gums.

If Magpiepaw knew anything (which was a lot, she knew SOOOO much!), she knew that she didn't have to worry. They'd be able to bring something back to camp, absolutely! Gracklepaw really needed to loosen up. With her around, trouble was just another word for "minor inconvenience" and "fun!".

The tom seemed a bit relieved when Magpiepaw promised that everything would be fine, though he still was slightly anxious. He really didn't want Dawnstar- or any ShadowClan cat for that matter - think lesser of him after just joining, but Magpiepaw's confidence seemed to coax him a little. She seemed like she knew what she was doing. Of course she did! She was Magpiepaw!

"So we won't get in trouble?" He asked, tilting his head. Yeah. They wouldn't get in trouble. How would the Clanmates even know? Then he felt some blood trickle down his nose. His black nose twitched as he remembered the stinking pain from the rabbit scratch. Oh yeah. The rodent had scratched him. Dang it!!!

His gaze shot to Magpiepaw. "Hey Magpiepaw... what if they notice my scratch?" He asked. It wasn't that bad, but it would certainly take some time to heal, and would be noticeable for the time being. Atleast... He thought it would be okay. His tail flicked as he awaited her response.

Oh. She hadn't thought of that actually.

Pushing herself up to Gracklepaw's height with her hind legs, she placed a heavy paw on his head to steady it, and she began busying herself by licking away the trails of scarlet. Magpiepaw wasn't no herb gathering medicine cat, but she was Magpiepaw, the best warrior to ever be destined for this clan!

Plus, she was super smart, she'd definitely think of something useful. As her brown eyes focused on his scarred nose, she was family quiet for a moment, something quite unusual for her. Her face scrunched up in a quizzical expression as she finally dropped back down to the forest floor.

"I'll just say," she began, dragging the remaining licks of blood onto her blonde paw. It was very weird tasting to say the least, she didn't like the fact that the blood of a clanmates lingered in her mouth, she'd honestly much rather it be an enemies, then she wouldn't feel so weird about it. ""That I was playing a bit too ruff. Or---" she perked up, her brown eyes gleaming, "I could say that I thought you were a loner based on your odd smell n' stuff. See, problem solved!"

Gracklepaw stood there awkwardly, leaning down for the much smaller cat to lick his wound. It was unusual. No one had ever licked him before. ‘Cept for his ma. But he was a little kitten back then, and he couldn’t even remember what she looked like. Her face was just a blurry blob of color, a blob that he might’ve just dreamed up.

It was a weird feeling. Maybe he was the one making it weird. It was unexpected at first. He froze when he first felt the strange sensation, but it wasn’t a bad sensation. It almost felt… nice? Was it weird to think that? Especially because Magpiepaw was a girl! Did that mean something? He remembered some loner telling him all about mollies. But then again, that was the same guy who’d told him about starsticks. So maybe the old cat was wrong again.

He wasn’t sure. But what did know was that it flooded his heart with warmth to think that someone cared enough about him to try to clean his wound. Magpiepaw really was his new best friend. She was great.

As she finished up and began coming up with excuses he grew more relaxed. He did feel somewhat guilty about lying, but Magpiepaw was convincing, and it was easier than risking getting yelled at. “Well… I guess nobody needs to know. You’re right! We’ll just go in. Maybe no one will even notice!

"Exactly!" Magpiepaw said. "Now c'mon, there should be a scent trail around here somewhere."

She had noticed the odd freezing thing Gracklepaw did when she was tending to him, but she'd rather not bring it up. It wasn't was that important anyways! Maybe he didn't see it coming, that was probably why he stiffened like that. Regardless of the answer, Magpiepaw wouldn't spend her whole evening worrying about it. No need!

She sniffed the air. Awesome, they were still in territory. "A vole or two should be available. Shadowclan cats love those. Well, all of them except me. They just taste like dirt in my opinion." Magpiepaw stuck out her tongue with a sour expression. "Bleh."

Trotting briskly through the forest, she paused every few strides to pick leaves from her pelt while also trying to soothe over her ruffled fur. Magpiepaw really didn't like grooming, especially when everything that made her dirty tasted like swampy water... Which it was. They lived in a marsh after all.

The point is, it tasted like a rats rear end, and if she wanted to look presentable she'd have to bite the bullet.

He nodded along and trotted alongside her, although he ad absolutely no idea what a vole was. Maybe like a mole? But he didn’t really no what a mole was either. He met a cat named Mole once, but he had no idea what a mole actually was.

He felt silly as he began to ask. “Hey Magpiepaw… what’s a vole? And how do I catch one?” He felt embarrassed for no knowing, as he cheeks heated up. Magpiepaw said everyone in ShadowClan caught voles, but he didn’t even know what vole was.

He watched as she kept trying to groom her own fur too, which was understandable, so he kept asking questions each time she stopped. “Are voles easy to catch? Or hard? Why does everyone love them?” He meowed, embarrassed, but curious.

She just shrugged nonchalantly as she padded forward. "A vole is like... It's like a mouse. If you can catch mice, these should be easy for you."

She twirled around a large tree before stopping to sniff it. After a while, she continued on, her mouth slightly open. "They're kind of big though, almost my size. But I'm totally bigger! I definitely tower of them at least a foot, but they're to my elbows."

Magpiepaw hated voles. They tasted weird and stringy to her. She also hated that she couldn't hold the darn things in her jaws for too long. It was like trying to pull her own weight, literally. She had a gripe with them for those two reasons alone. And nope! She wasn't being overly harsh, Starclan made them prey after all, why should Magpiepaw have any pity for them?

"Well, I guess I mean everyone doesn't mind them. I see their stupid little beady eyes in the fresh kill pile quite often. But I HATE 'EM. Every other cat obviously doesn't care. They're really easy to catch so that probably why we eat them so much. But as you already know, I'm much more sophisticated! I wouldn't touch that thing even if it was three rivers away from me!"

the reply that I procrastinated on for 11 days-

Gracklepaw
11 moons || ShadowClan || 38/100

Gracklepaw nodded. Like a mouse? That sounded easy enough to catch. He used to catch tons of those back in that barn. There was a whole family back there… those were good times. Back in that barn. Alone. With no one to talk to. Okay. Maybe they weren’t so good.

Either way, he still liked the idea of hunting for voles! Sounded fun! But anything with Magpiepaw sounded fun to him.

“So voles must be pretty popular with ShadowClan, huh? I’ll have to try one sometime! If only I wasn’t so full from that rabbit.” He chuckled, licking his lips as he thought of the disregarded rabbit. “Well, they should be pretty easy to catch then, if you guys eat ‘em so often. We can catch a couple and then head back. How does that sound?” He asked, strolling leisurely behind Magpiepaw

"Sounds exceptional," Magpiepaw nodded with a smirk. Ooo, this would be fun! Well, fun minus all of the dirty voles she'd have to hunt, but fun!

She kept her ears perked as she listened for quite literally anything worth her attention. Those stupid caterpillars that lazied across a tree stump definitely weren't of her interest, but then she paused to look at the dreadfully colorful disgraces for a moment.

She wrinkled her nose at them before opening her maw to speak, "Hey! Hey, Gracklepaw!" She crowed before turning back to the fat bug. "Why aren't they in their balls yet?"

When Magpiepaw said "balls" she meant cocoons, but saying "balls" was a lot easier for her. She still had a slight lisp when saying certain words due to her oddly shaped bottom row of teeth and even though saying "balls" instead of "cocoon" made it more noticable she still did it. Partly because she almost though it sounded like the hiss of a snake, so she liked it. Because, HAHAHA! HISS = INTIMIDATING!

Gracklepaw trotted besides Magpiepaw with a grin. He walked absentmindedly, zoning out as he just followed Magpiepaw closely, unsure of where to go. He was in his own little world, absorbing in every sight, sound and smell as she took him through the territory.

He didn't realize that Magpiepaw had wandered off at first, as he was too caught up in his daydreams. But as soon as he snapped back into reality he whipped around. "Magpiepaw?" He called, before spotting her crouched next to that stump. "What're you doing?" He questioned the shorter cat.

He crouched down besides her to get a good look at whatever was taking up her attention, which were some fat caterpillars. They were colorful, like many that he'd seen before back at that huge Twoleg Farm. He was quite accustomed to caterpillars and butterflies, at least in his opinion.

"Well, it's because it has to keep eating. Caterpillars have to eat and get super duper fat. That's how they turn into butterflies. They go into their teensy cocoons and they grow wings." He heard that from someone once. Was that right? He really hoped it was. He really wanted to impress Magpiepaw.."There used to be loads of butterflies at this old Strawberry Farm that he'd stayed at for a bit. Maybe one day he should take Magpiepaw there.

"Once this guys gets super fat, he'll make he "ball" and become a butterfly!" The black cat exclaimed with a smile.

"Intimidating," Magpiepaw smiled toothily and she batted a harmless paw at the slow sluggish worms. She then turned back to Gracklepaw, her excitement in full swing. "Haha, I knew that you silly bag of feathers," she joked, flicking her oddly long tail to the tip of his chin. Though, it was nice to know Gracklepaw knew to. It was kinda exhausting having to be so amazingly right ALL the time. So, it was nice that she wouldn't have to explain her vast pool of knowledge to Grackle there.

"I'm glad I don't have to do that, I'd be fatter than a kittypet in an abandoned mouse barn! HAHA!" She tossed her head back as she cackled.

"C'mon then! Let's skedaddle and eat some voles! GRRR!" Magpiepaw mocked a silly little growl as she stood on her hind legs and batted Gracklepaw on the forehead. She dropped back down with a soft grunt before breaking back into a trot, her tail high and confident.

Now... If Magpiepaw was a stupid little vole than where would she hide? Ugh, those small quicky little things! She hated when things were faster than her because that should be near impossible. No one was faster than the great Magpiepaw!

"Just you wait buddy, soon enough we'll be wearing these voles as skins! Joking joking... Or am I?"

He blinked as she flicked her tail right in his face and began to laug along with her. “Yeah. You’re so short too, you’d be like a round little ball.” He teased back. Hopefully she wouldn’t find that offensive. She knew it was a joke. Probably. Although she might not take the comment about height too kindly. In his exprience tiny creatures were always the most ferocious.

“Ha! Those voles don’t stand a chance against us! We’re ShadowClan cats! We caught that rabbit and we’ll catch some measely voles two!” He bellowed confidently, puffing out his chest.

“Hey!” He exclaimed, ducking as Magpiepaw swatted him playfully. He sprinted over to her to catch up as she trotted away. “What was that for?” He laughed as he batted back at her ear. “So where do you even find voles? What do they smell like?” He wondered allowed as he matched her pace.

When he made the comment about the voles his eyes widened. Sure, it might’ve been a bit naive but he asked, “Wait- do you guys actually wear vole skins?!” He’d never see a cat where another animal’s pelt; Yet, ShadowClan cats were the same ones who decorated dens with skulls and pelts. He wouldn’t put it past them to wear the skins too, as crazy as it sounded.

A strong image appeared in her head at Gracklepaw's description. She snorted, and then that snort slowly grew to be a cackle. "HEHAHAEHESHpsppshhhh..." Her giggles sizzled out into a low hiss before continuing. "Gracklepaw," she paused to laugh a bit more. "Let's take a moment to thank Starclan that I don't look like that. Being short is an advantage, but short and fat? Nuh, uh, that's a death sentence."

Magpiepaw looked over her shoulder to face Gracklepaw and a mischievous look flashed in her oak brown eyes. She joined in on Gracklepaw's commitment to Shadowclan. She yowled so loud the stars probably heard her. "That's the spirit we're awesome! And--- EEEPP!" Magpiepaw squealed as her clanmate swatted at her ear. She twisted around and bapped him on the snout, her tail curling playfully.

"They smell like dirt," Magpiepaw managed in-between giggles. She then cleared her throat an regained her very professional composure. "And that they bathe in poop every two seconds. They smell like crap, they taste like crap..." She explained rhythmically.

What Gracklepaw said next though, that was enough to make her face wind up in laughter once again. "Gracklepaw, you bird brain!" She smiled toothily at him. "I was joking, oh wise one." Oh how she loved this idiot. He was so naive! Maybe she could play a prank or two on him later, some harmless ones. He'd probably never even notice!

Gracklepaw grinned as he saw that he was able to make her laugh. He began to laugh along too with Magpiepaw as she cackled. "I'm glad you're not a caterpillar. You look much better as a cat." He commented between giggles. "I mean, you're right. Short and fat would be quite useless. You'd look like a No-Furs pet! They're all plump and pampered. Not like us at all. We're rough, and thought and live in wild and feed ourselves." He growled playfully, puffing his chest out with pride. He swatted his paw at nothing, unsheathing his claws as he swiped at some invisible threat.

"Ouch! Magpiepaw! You can't get my snout, that's mean!" He whined with a pout. "I have a scar already! You'll make it worse!"

He wrinkled his nose at Magpiepaw's descriptions of voles. "You're not being serious, are you? I really hope they don't taste and smell like crap. I don't wanna hunt a piece of prey that likes poop." He looked seriously concerned at that comment. He wondered if this was some strange form of humour. But he knew there were some bugs that liked crap. Maybe voles did too...?

He felt a bit silly about the cole thing, but he laughed along with her none the less. "Heh! Yeah... Guess I shoulda know. But still! ShadowClan cats have a love for the grotesque." He explained with a flick of his tail
