View Full Version : Enforcer Challenge Owl v Rook [spectators welcome]

Enforcer Challenge
A challenge between Rookfire and Owlthroat!

General rules:
-No one can step into the fight. Doing so will result in punishment and getting booted by any of the Enforcers present.
-Winning does not guarantee you keep/get the rank. Dawnstar has the final say in that decision and Hawkbite will voice his opinion on the matter.
-Hawkbite requires claws be unsheathed.
-Hawkbite allows dirty moves.
-Hawkbite will NOT tolerate someone else stepping in to tell him how to referee the fight. Dawnstar and Mistlewhisker being the exception to the rule.
-Spectators of any age are welcome to watch! Kits will need monitored closely by a warrior and if things get too rough, they will be escorted away.

Hawkbite will step in if he believes the fight will result in a death or serious injuries. He will not tolerate life-altering injuries!

"ShadowClan!"

The Commanders voice echoed across the clearing after a few paces from Dawnstar's den. She'd given the okay to for his lineup, despite the obvious displeasure with defending Tuftedtusk's rank. It was what it was. They both believed Owlthroat needed to prove himself after his latest issue.

"Rookfire has challenged one of our Enforcers, gather around if you want some entertainment!"

"Owlthroat! Come defend you rank!"

Hawkbite hadn't told either warrior what was going on. He waited as the cats around him gathered, casting a sharp glance towards the Enforcer and the former. "Rules are simple, don't kill each other and I will step in and end this spar if either of you gets close to dying," that should go without saying, but one never truly knew with ShadowClanners.

His gaze would shift to anyone gathering to watch the entertainment.

"If any of you think about intervening or telling me how to run this challenge, just know I'll rip you to shreds. Only our leader and deputy have input."

The warning was issued. He would not repeat himself.

"BEGIN!" He'd shout once the duo were lined up and ready to go.

Perking up at the commotion Bleedingpaws head tilted, curious at the challenge. It was rare cats dared to go against the existing enforcers, last one had been Foggymasks ill fated attempt to defeat Shrewstep, which he'd succeeded at but had marked the start of his downfall. It was reasonable, enforcers were the best of the clan so it was a huge risk to ones reputation and respect, and rarely worth it.

Rookfire however.... If anyone had a chance, he did and Bleedingpaw respected and like the tom. Not that he didnt respect Owlthroat, he just didnt know him.

Standing and wobbling over to the ring, tripping over a snow (more mush now) hidden root and getting up again as he did. The apprentice settled in to watch, pressed up against Hawkbites side just because he could, curious before whispering "Who do you think will win?" to the older tom.

Owlthroat had age and size after all, but Rookfire was known for his passion drive and brains.

Honeypaw’s nosiness had to see this. Even if she didn’t necessarily like fighting, she didn’t want to be out of the loop. Not that she was ever in it anyway, with her total lack of involvement in the Clan. She joined the slowly growing group nervously, though she would leave at the sight of anything too bloody.

[OOC: on mobile and too lazy to format lol.]

Wildstorm’s ears swiveled curiously at Hawkbite’s summons. Another challenge eh? She stepped forward, gaze glittering with intrigue. Hopefully this proved to be somewhat entertaining.

What?! Such insolence! Yars stormed forward, sitting amongst some of the other -paws but not engaging with them. Her eyes blazing with fury. Who would dare - well, Rookfire would. But you know what she means. Who would dare challenge her father for his position?! The audacity! She was bristling, practically growling, as she watched the challenger line up. Snorting in contempt. Who does he think he is? Ya know, aside from the obvious. Yars glared at Rookfire, obviously displeased. She would most assuredly be cheering for her father. Paws down.

Tuftedtusk's ears perked in surprise at Hawkbite's announcement. Rookfire challenging his mate for his position? StarClan he didnt know what to think about that. Rookfire got demoted for a reason and Owlthroat earned his position.. even though his mate had angered several high ranks with his stunt with Willowwood. With a sigh, he made his way over and sat to the side, beckoning his kits over. "Mimic, Yarrow, Talon! Come support your father!" He mewed, patting the space beside him. All Owlthroat's family should be here to cheer him on.

Magpiecove scrambled over. Blood? Guts AND blood!? HAHAHA, fun! The chimera sat as close as she could while still being out of the line of fire, even if she definitely wished she could've been squaring up herself. C'mon, fighting was fun! Anyways, big black clawed Owlthroat was there, how could she not watch? He was one heck of a fighter, that's for sure. Magpiecove couldn't stop grinning.

Mudslide assumed she was supposed to be here, so she was, watching for the pelts of the two toms with icy eyes that narrowed out hazy light from the sky. She shuffled onto the muddy ground, somewhat hunching. She honestly had no preference for who won or lost, she didn't know either cats well. Then again... With Owlthroat's recent scramble, Mudslide found herself favoring Rookfire. Mudslide made sure to keep the kits within her peripheral vision.

Typically, Hawkbite would stand for this sort of thing, but when Bleedingpaw approached him and started to lean on him, he'd find himself sitting. It was easier to stabilize himself and the apprentice this way. Plus, the fight was just starting, it wasn't dire for him to jump in this very second. However, if he was proven wrong, Bleedingpaw would probably be eating dirt with the way Hawkbite would just leave his side.

"I sure hope Owlthroat does. Dawnstar has a lot of faith in that one and I really liked him. He had my nomination to even get into the Enforcers. Cool fighting style, I sparred with him once, too," Hawkbite spoke, recalling the spar a few moons ago. That was the day Owlthroat had really caught his attention. "However, his ego and my speed got the better of him that day, he was humbled. I hope he doesn't let it get to his head, again," Hawkbite spoke, realizing he was explaining a little too much. Bleedingpaw probably didn't care about all those extra details.

“Hello! You’re the sala…mander? Right! Wait no-” The kitten frowned as she padded up, not paying any mind to personal space as the russet feline pressed against the commander’s side, “Commander! Not salamander… what’s going on?” The curious kitten looked up to Hawkbite while waiting for an explanation to the gathering crowd and discussions on bets and the two cats they were all watching. Huh, the golden bengal didnt know Hawkbite had fought Owlthroat. He also didnt know when he became taller then the older tom, if much more lean and skinny. That was kinda disturbing to realize, but then again technically Bleedingpaw was an adult, just an apprentice.

Considering the information given the bengal hummed considering, muttering a "I suppose I'd have an ego too if I was that big." eyeing the enforcers build. He may not be as small as his sister but he was still ever jealous of the powerful maine coons his oriental build could not match. "If he's that good an enforcer however wouldnt it be more reasonable to not replace him but induct Rookfire in addition if he wins? Owlthroat is no doubt better then the average warrior so best of both in that case." Honestly he had a lot of respect and liked the tom but if he issued a challenge (and he wouldnt, no way) he'd challenge Newtbelly, judging him easier based on size and just a bare glean of skill from his training session with the tom. Newtbelly was good no question, but less... titanic seeming.

The pretty apprentices head cocked at the question, thinking it over. "Well.... Rookfire is a friend of mine, I quite like him. He's skilled too. However.... Enforcers need to be more then strong and he's been... Ornery since his demotion and Sleepy's appointment. Maybe an enforcer rank would settle his hurt feelings but if not I see that causing minor issues." The words were soft, Bleedingpaw not keen on spreading rumors of someone he liked but Hawkbite was Mr Pats so got special info.

The intruding brat did not.

Frowning and sighing at the random kit who hadnt a clue what was going on the tom tucked himself into a loaf, paws shaking violently in protest as he did until he sat on them. After Everything Bleedingpaws patience for babies and idiots was just gone, no longer keen on making friends with everyone. Hawkbite could engage if he wanted, the golden bengal was not.

Oooh, another one of these? Should be exciting. Rookfire against Owlthroat; pursonally, the she-cat had no preference on who she wanted to win and who she wanted to lose. Although, she did have some doubts with the former healer. But all she needed to do was sit back and watch the fight; maybe someday she’ll throw herself into one of these fights and see what happens next. Not yet, though. Not yet.

Pinekit glared at Mushroomkit. She was not going to have fun today either because he needed to be the one talking to the enforcer if anything. When he grew up cats were gonna be fighting him for his rank because HE'D be an enforcer, he was sure of it!!

Pinekit moved to the cats, one who seemed to be ignoring her (as they should) and looked at the enforcer commander guy. With extreme casualness, he meowed about Mushroomkit, "That one's Mousekit. Or at least she should be called Mousekit because she's so pathetic." then continued, "She's crazy and thinks she has a NOT REAL sister called Dovekit, ignore her. She cries when you ignore Dovekit though so just pretend she's real and nothing will happen."

He then looked proudly at the emforcer commander. "I'm Pinekit and I'm much better than her." he said, glaring at her. "It's quite obvious what's happening." Pinekit said at Mushroomkit, then commented, "I want... Owlthroat to win. I that if he got into that position he should be able to keep it."

Killer Aptitude T3 - Just A Scratch - Silver Tongue T2
The Dancing Bird

A thick lump of tension rose in the Enforcer’s throat and he quickly chewed it down, his paws moving quickly at his summons. This was it, his stunt with Willowwood had finally brought its harvest. He gave a firm nod to Hawkbite, his face a steely mask. Unreadable. But he couldn’t help his glance wander to the gathering spectators, his family was here. His brother, his mate, his children. There was no escaping their gaze, he’d had enough humiliation for a lifetime, he couldn’t lose in front of them and lose his honour.

Owlthroat began to rasp his tongue hastily through his fur, removing any loose dust or debris from his pelt til it gleamed. A ritual he’d maintained going into any battle, looking his top form. The calm before the ever encroaching storm. Finally his thick black claws sliding from his paw pads. He was an intimidating sight, honed by moons of age, spite and glory. But he wouldn’t underestimate his opponent by any means, Rookfire had been an Enforcer before. Owlthroat was well aware of the potential that he could be an enforcer again. For such a brute force of nature Owlthroat had the mind of a rehearsed tactician. His power had never been in much else, not hunting, never his stealth. His battlefield prowess. Owlthroat was a tank, his brain activating on the battlefield.

He’d changed, slowly albeit. But bit by grasping bit, the birth of his children, his punishment. The ego he had held so dear had subsided, it never would completely. But he knew his place now, his place was with the elites. Ego couldn’t cloud that, he wouldn’t let it. Replaced by pride and honour, to fight in the name of his blood and his friends, to earn and prove himself again and again until he himself believed he could change.

He was ready for Rookfire to arrive and stake his claim.

He was ready to defend it with every ounce of muscle he could muster.

Silent steps carried her out of the nursery when she noticed a few kits deciding to join this battle, offering both participants an encouraging smile before her eyes lowered to follow the movements of the young kits across the clearing to join some warriors one by one. Her brows creased when she spotted the shivering Kinkkit whom Coyoteblossom greeted with open paws, and while she knew the young warrior would certainly keep an eye on the young kits at his side, her instincts told her she still needed to say something. Approaching the little group with soft eyes and a gentle smile, she greeted them with a nod of her head.
"C-coyote...blossom... hello,,,"
Her eyes briefly flickered down to the kitten he had his tail wrapped around.
"If..if it gets.. too cold, or,, or any colder,,,, I can... take h-her back... to the nursery."

"I don't.... wan..want either.. of them... to get... sick. It's.. rather..rather chilly out... today."

➢ Hollowpaw doesn’t know why she joins the brewing crowd. Perhaps it was similar to execution, an event you hated yet couldn’t quite look away from…. Enforcer challenges didn’t bring the sudden cold that executions brought alongside the sting of death in the air like an overwhelming wave of dread and she was grateful for that. Hollow tracks down her mentor. He was once again the source of such a trial. He was always the source. His threats against intervention made the Apprentice uneasy for a moment, her brain freezing while she stared at him with an unreadable expression, yet too reeked of uncertainty.

Once her senses returned and nerves calmed slightly, they spot Fishpaw. Sister. They were sisters now. Yes, sisters. The black and white shecat shifts direction, making her path straight to Fishpaw and sitting next to the equally scarred shecat. Silence taking over her as they simply gave her sister a very quick and small smile of appreciation. Appreciation because Fish was here and Hollowpaw didn’t end up alone. Selfish, they know. But her sister was still a welcome sight, especially after Hawkbite’s statements that made her retreat inwards. The shecat wraps her tail around her paws, she couldn’t quite shake the tension of the event. Her tired eyes locked onto the Enforcer before them. He was ready to defend his rank, Hollowpaw’s claws unintentionally dug into the dirt. Rookfire. The traitor. The fallen. The tainted. He wanted to climb his way back up. Climb to a position that he was far from earning again…. She bites her lip, the taste of blood shortly after becoming her sign to stop yet they didn’t. They didn’t trust themself to comment much. The deaf tom exited the warrior’s den as he eyed onto the spectator-crowded battlefield. The gathering might be smaller than he could expect during the clan meeting, but he couldn’t clarify the issue of this event – even his skilled nose couldn’t give a single hint. Questioned, Honeycomb approached the spectators and narrowed his eyes for an even closer review. Hawkbite probably said something he couldn’t comprehend, obviously because he’s too far to interpret his lip-syncing. Stars, he should’ve got to the opposite direction just to understand what’s going on.

Speaking of which, he could perhaps ask someone about it. Maybe the molly who sits next to him? His pale green gaze glued onto Mudslide as he was about to wait for her to notice him, but only for a short period of time. She’s a bit too focused onto the battlefield and doesn’t want to miss anything out, he assumed. Poking her isn’t very ideal aswell - she might’ve not enjoyed a sudden contact from a stranger like him, and he couldn’t scare her with his swollen meow. Guess he should let it be, then. A ruffled sigh escaped from his maw, as he watched Owlthroat arise onto the battlefield. He seems to shiver for a bit, completely anxious about what he’ll expect from his witness.

What? A cloud of dismay filled his mind. An enforcer challenge - from Rookfire. That could only mean one thing. It was finally -
... What? He blinked hard in surprise, as Hawkbite uttered a name other than his own. Owlthroat? Rookfire had decided to challenge... Owlthroat? No. Nonononono. Dismay turned to pure indignation. Challenging himself, he could understand - justify, even. Newtbelly carried far fewer moons of experience, and - though he'd never let anyone know, he barely felt he deserved his own rank. Especially in the face of a skilled warrior such as Rookfire. But, Owlthroat? If any cat deserved such a rank, it was him. Sharp claws began to dig their way into the ground as tortoiseshell's eyes darted across the clearing, hoping to spot either of them.

There he was. Menacing as ever. There's no way he was losing this. Sure, Rookfire could probably destroy Newtbelly with one swipe - he had no delusions regarding that. But Owlthroat? The tom found himself smirking for a second, before going back to brooding in anger. As the tom encroached, he couldn't help but notice something. A new scar? [agatha kitty] Well, barely a scar yet. The thing looked new: Claw marks. Clear as day. But there hadn't been any fights - not that Newtbelly had heard of anyway. And he liked to hope his senior would keep him informed on matters such as that. So... Where did it come from? An in-clan conflict? Though, it seemed unusual for such fights to go by without a fuss, or even some gossip. He'd like to think it was one of the kits, play fighting with him, but that was certainly the mark of a grown cat. Perhaps he was being challenged on the basis of this scar. Perhaps he and Rookfire had fought already? Informally? He was being too nosy. He knew this. But, it worried him.

This wasn't right. Perhaps he could throw himself in, and take Owlthroat's place? If he thought Owlthroat deserved this rank above himself, surely he could swap, if he just went up there, all he needed to do was just - no. He took a deep breath and stayed right in his place. He had to remain composed. He couldn't embarrass Owlthroat, or Hawkbite, for that matter. He couldn't throw himself in and start mouthing off, no matter how much he wanted to. No matter how aggravated the sheer gall of this was making him. He had to stay put. "Show him what you're made of, old man." He grumbled, just about loud enough for Owlthroat to hear, as a low growl remained in his throat. This better go down quick.

OOO A CHALLENGE?? With how stupid this clan was, Fireflypaw was surprised anyone thought of this. the only thing shadowclanners (besides xem and xyr friends of course) could do was be annoying and stay alive, and they constantly failed the latter. That would change when xe became Fireflystar! Everyone who was weak or disobeyed xem would die instantly HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The fluffy apprentice wasn't hoping for anyone in particular. xe guessed xe should root for Rookfire since he was xyr mentor, but to be honest, xe just wanted to see how enforcers fought! Battle wasn't actually very interesting if you didn't actually fight entertainment wise, but Fireflypaw could learn from it. The dilute tortie loafed and watched the battle start, focused on specifically owlthroat. The enforcer that was actually still an enforcer, so clearly he was doing something right that rookfire didn't.

an enforcer challenge, huh? the scarred warrior got up from their nest and trotted out into the clearing, half-blind green eyes looking over at the enforcer commander as they spoke. this might be fun to watch. the newly named warrior trotted over, a vacant expression on their face. cloverlark had never seen an enforcer challenge before. first time for everything, huh? the small cat sat down, long tail wrapping around their paws as they awaited the fight to begin.

If she was being honest she was kinda hoping owl would win over rookfire, no over the top reason, but owlthroat did teach her how to flay so their was that. looking to the side of her fishpaw noticed her sister hollowpaw and let out a small chirp ' Hollows! she meowed scooting a bit closer, but still keeping personal space in between them. Did fishpaw adopt her yes, could hollowpaw escape now? No, anyways she was stuck with fish now if she liked it or not So hollow who do you think is gonna win? she asked with a tilt of her head.

➢ Fishpaw's words aided in grounding her to the point where she could speak, but the words that left her mouth hold the most amount of venom that she's ever had when speaking. Even when she's whispering they are harsh. With her normal tone, they would've sound blank, as if she didn't care but it was completely opposite this time.. "If your answer is Rookfire then I think you should be cast out of Shadowclan for supporting that clan hopping traitor." The words burn her mouth. Back into silence. Hollowpaw simply stares at Fishpaw. Her eyes wide as their claws flex in and out of the earth. Keep it together. Disturb the event and you're as good as dead. Hollowpaw looks away and back at the challenge in front of the pair. Say sorry. Your outburst was uncalled for. How dare you let it be anger.

"I am sorry. I lost my composure. I wish for Owlthroat to win." Back to her normal voice, husky and blank. That's better, isn't it? Her own scolding clawing at the back of her mind. Tearing through any form of resistance they offered.

https://warriorcatsonline.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=8608&pictureid=65185 Upon hearing his fathers call for the enforcer challenge, LionPaws interest was immediately raised as he slipped from his own den and into the growing crowd. RookFire and OwlThroat, huh? Well, sure, RookFire helped him a bit with his training but…he was also a medicine cat (apprentice) which ought to soften one up in his opinion…and he was an ex riverrat. If LionPaw had to choose one to follow into battle, it would be OwlThroat and he’d stand by that with no hesitation. He looked around the crowd as he tried to get the best view possible. Ah- there HawkDad was! He could hardly spot the Commander with the crowd.

The apprentice crept up to him, listening to his opinion before butting in with his own. “Oh- definitely OwlThroat. No reason he should be kicked off the enforcers team in my opinion.” he huffed strongly. Really though, out of all the enforcers to challenge…OwlThroat?

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan warrior | mid 20s ]
[ purrks (https://warriorcatsonline.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1587808&postcount=5) ]

rookfire was practically vibrating with nerves when hawkbite called for attention, knowing it could only be it. finally. cold rushed through his body, stomach twisting with the knowledge that this could mean returning to his place within the clan or humiliation. after a deep breath, rookfire rose, steadily making his way towards the commander, jaws clenched and claws aching to twitch out of their sheaths. he couldnt fight dirty, avoid drawing out the conflict, it hadnt sat right with him when it was foggymask, and damn the stars he wouldnt repeat that traitors mistake.
a clean, fair fight.

rookfire took his place, resisting to give into the urge of lashing his tail, instead he remained almost eerily still. sharp grey eyes observing owlthroats every move, searching for obvious weaknesses. they had never sparred, owlthroat had never gotten the chance to see him fight, and he himself had only watched the other go up against rats and snakes. still, it was enough to draw conclusions. despite their similar height, owlthroats heavier set called for brute force, while rookfire could rely on his experience of dodging and weaving. wearing down his opponent, one strike at a time.
he must keep his composure, fight with reason and technique. lingering for the perfect moment to strike...he was getting ahead of himself.
owlthroats long fur would take more effort to pierce, but he was not going for a killing blow so it barely mattered anyway. eyes narrowed, the former medicine cat continued to scan the other tom for easy openings, unsatisfied with simply putting it down to 'wear him out'. honestly, long term injuries being forbidden was his primary issue, it would be so easy to simply plan around the goal of breaking a limb, much easier than finding another way to harm.

stunning or bruising him might work, but went against his previously established knowledge of owlthroat being a brute force type of fighter. thoughts continued to wander as rookfire scanned the crowd out of the corner of his eye, the bets some cats had placed did not fall on deaf ears either, but he was not one to be discouraged by others perspectives. he had challenged everyones perception by joining shadowclan and rising through the ranks and damn the stars he would do it again. thought, hawkbites remark stung a bit, he knew the commander didnt really like him, but.. well, he was above that anyway. hawkbite had never made it to high rank. not to put him down.

rookfire looked back to meet owlthroats gaze, only a couple of lengths away, the tip of his tail flicking idly as he squared his shoulders, old aches and broken bones long forgotten. he knew of owlthroats recent slip up, and expected nothing but all the other could give from this fight.
he hawkbite announced the beginning of the fight, rookfire launched himself at the other [roll d20 ; 17 ] claws digging into the ground as he took a sharp turn in order to avoid the strike he expected owlthroat might want to take before he reached him. he was aiming to sink his teeth into the warriors shoulder and claws up his back before moving along the natural turn this should pull out of the other, trying to reach him, and bring space between them once more. while rookfire was usually one to rely on pure strength and deliver brutal blows with the intent to kill, he was determined to stay out of owlthroats reach for this, relying on his more agile nature.

It looked like the former medicine cat was challenging one of the enforcers for their rank, Adderpaw had watched one of these particular fights go down when she had still been a kit. The last one she had watched had been spent mostly observing how interested her brother Pantherkit had seemed to be while observing the fight. Surely she should take interest in it too right, and she did in one way or another. Becoming an enforcer was the highest rank you could achieve beneath the ultimate high ranks, it was the closest star that Adderpaw could try to catch. Being the daughter of the leader meant you had to be above exceptional and that was something she had been lacking in. Another thought came to mind, Mushroomkit had mentioned being scared of fighting right? Maybe this battle would disturb her- Adderpaw would just have to find her friend and show her the importance of this sort of thing. That and she would sit by her, mushroomkit had a way of making everyone else fade into the background. As of right now Adderpaw was way too aware of the forming crowd. Suffocating.

The braided brown tabby shrunk through the crowd keeping her head low, her ears angling in different directions as she tried to differentiate between the voices in the crowd. When she finally latched onto mushroomkits it was too hard to find her. Though ... .Adderpaw would have preferred to find her friend alone, it seemed the russet she kit had made her way over to a group. Adderpaw hated groups. The apprentice was just about to retreat to a secluded corner, from which she could watch the duel alone, she caught on to the words the other kit was spouting. It caused the fur to stand up along her spine– the audacity!? How dare this little brat talk to mushroomkit that way! The brief anger was enough to cause the apprentice to forget her previous shyness as she marched in the direction of the small group. She had no intention in conversing with Hawkbite or Bleedpaw so she didn't even spare them a glance before stepping In front of pinekit. She bared her teeth in her snarl, she was offended! Offended on behalf of her friend who was so kind and sweet. She was the brightest thing that Adderpaw could think of in her life and she wouldn't stand for such slander. ”You're the one who's pathetic, talking about your CLANMATE like this! You-..”. The words were hissed out faster than Adderpaw could comprehend them and when she did they sounded wrong! Wrong! Her anger started to simmer down or more so her anxiety overrode it. She hadn't spoken loud enough to cause a ruckus or even loud enough for others outside the group to even hear her but in her head she had shouted and now she felt the glares of no one's eyes burning into her fur. Her stance wavered from confident to unsure and her eyes flickered to the ground. "y-you need to-- um apologize. Now" It seemed the fight had or was starting but Adderpaw wouldn't be content to watch until she dealt with this problem. If she could deal with this problem!

Ah, it was about time. Mistlewhisker had been expecting a challenge soon, and wasn't surprised to see Owlthroat up on the chopping block. The Deputy lumbered over to the gathered audience, looking for a place to sit. She thought about hanging back and watching from afar, but this was a rather important battle. Let them both know that their rank was not the only thing to win or lose here.

Mistlewhisker hopped up behind Hawkbite and Bleedingpaw, her steps light. They were talking about who they hoped to win. The Deputy sat down on the other side of Bleedingpaw, eye fixed on the pair of toms in the clearing. [B]"Owlthroat has proven to be useful as an Enforcer. He is humble, even if his emotions grow out of control." Both Rookfire and Owlthroat were toms that were lead by emotion, but they showed it differently. Rookfire was sharp and unstable, while Owlthroat was brash and volatile. Mistlewhisker studied each challenger, tail tapping the ground next to her. "Rookfire is dependable, but antisocial. Losing his position as medicine cat apprentice appeared to have been a major blow to his ego." Mistlewhisker couldn't say she blamed him, but it was about time he pulled himself together and showed what made him deserve the position in the first place.

But who did she want to win? As the call to fight sounded, Mistlewhisker narrowed her eye and let the fight decide for her.

Mudslide saw.

She saw Rookfire wiz into action like a bullet, she heard the murmurs of those around her. Heck, she even heard Honeycomb shuffle beside her, for whatever reason. She wasn't familiar with the orange tom, so she just figured he wanted to sit next to somecat during the fight. Mudslide didn't exactly mind, but she didn't appreciate how his gaze lingered on her. Plus, he sighed pretty loudly, as though he couldn't hear himself.

Mudslide wasn't going to linger on that however. She saw. She saw Kinkkit double over, as though in pain. Mudslide didn't know the symptoms of sickness, but she knew that movement well enough. Kinkkit wasn't well. It was better to be safe than having a hurling kit in the middle of an Enforcer battle. For a moment, icy eyes linked with the green pools of Honeycomb. She was moving. She just figured she'd let him know where she was going off to, even if she'd likely choose not to reclaim her spot.

Shuffling through mud, she paced over to Kinkkit and the cats who surrounded her. Mudslide looked to them, eyes deathly neutral. "Medicine den." She said huskily, before grabbing the kit by the scruff, and bringing them to the medicine den. She could only hope the medics were there.

Owlthroat
he/him | Shadowclan Enforcer | 46 moons
Killer Aptitude T3 - Just A Scratch - Silver Tongue T2
The Dancing Bird

TW: Blood

Owlthroat steeled his muscles at Rookfire’s arrival, adrenaline beginning to steadily flow through his veins, fur fluffing out along his spine in black inky splotches. His gaze wandered for a brief second over to the crowd, encircling around them like vultures. But the words of support uplifted his ears, he knew what he was doing. He knew how to fight, the scrawny yet lithe ex-Riverclanner wouldn’t win today. Owlthroat would ensure that. The Enforcer’s gaze caught the eye of his children’s wrath amongst the crowd and he bellowed in response to them, his voice unshaken and strong. ”Children, today’s result is final. Behave yourselves. No matter the outcome.” They’d obey, particularly with his mate keeping a watchful gaze.

But in Owlthroat’s head he hadn’t once reconciled with the idea of loosing, but it scraped gently at his mind. Deciding then and there it would be a loss not to hang his head over, but to take with diligence. Owlthroat’s eyes returned to meet Rookfire’s own, the tom scanning him as if for weakness. The Enforcer wouldn’t be able to pick apart his own in a lineup so he hoped it would suffice. No time to be spent on that himself, he knew how to brandish his talons and to instinctively adapt. What came, came. Dealing with it as he meant to do. Nothing to permanently injure was an obstacle of sorts, little did he know the same sentiment echoed within Rookfire’s mind. But Owlthroat wasn’t opposed to playing dirty, or as he deemed the better term, playing smart. Anything that could be used to gain an advantage would be, that wouldn’t guilt his mind.

His battle stance was adopted swiftly, the lumbering oaf making a marked change into elegance as his body shimmered closer to the floor and his limbs steadied in all four corners.

Showtime.

Hawkbite’s command pierced the air and Rookfire launched forth, Owlthroat’s limbs rippling with energy as he swept forward claws flashing like light. The tom’s sharp turn pulled him out of his reach and he felt teeth sink deep into his shoulder. Owlthroat’s face lit with a sickening, intense glee. A maniacal grin widening across his blackened lips as he felt the first ooze of blood. He loved this, intrinsically so.

Owlthroat’s weight shifted, glancing Rookfire’s claws from his fur. Owlthroat felt the heat as it skimmed past, hoping that before he dislodged his teeth he would be thrown out of his predicted path of travel. His own smile turning into a gaping abyss as his head contorted to the side and his teeth attempted to rake through the tender flesh of Rookfire’s remaining ear. Spinning with his weight as his head turned to bite down with crooked yellow fangs, hoping the momentum would both shift him from his shoulder as Owlthroat’s fangs remained still, pulling through and shredding whatever remained of the grip he had on the delicate triangular appendage.

Not quite as ballistic as his usual attack, Owlthroat felt rather lucky Rookfire had one good ear intact to execute his plan. If it worked that was.

SQUIRRELRISE
she/her | 20 moons | small, scarred russet and brown molly with white markings and yellow eyes
[ chill of death, hulk SMASH ]

another enforcer challenge - something squirrelrise has only experienced once before. the first time, it was shrewstep and foggymask, who both were no longer enforcers. this time, it was between owlthroat and rookfire. she wouldn't say she's close with either of the two in the slightest, but she was familiar with them enough considering they're her clanmates. unfortunately, she was just unfamiliar enough with them that she isn't sure who deserves the spot of enforcer more.

owlthroat had, by what she's observed, been a great enforcer. he was no doubt a skilled fighter (even if squirrelrise wanted, and did, look away), but.. the same could be said for rookfire in her opinion. the latter was simply younger and thinner than owlthroat, so she feels he's at a bit of a disadvantage. still, they were both respectable in her eyes. the few times she's interacted with rookfire, he's been a bit quiet - not that she could judge anyone for that - but he's gotten the job done. she's never heard, or seen, owlthroat slacking off either.

settling near the front of the crowd, the small warrior fights back a cringe as she watches the two toms rip and tear into each other. she's certain that if this were a real fight and hawkbite wasn't there to stop the two from killing each other, the injuries would surely be more severe than they already are. with an uncomfortable shuffle of her paws, she glances away for the fight for a few moments to gauge her clanmates reactions.

Lightningstrike nodded. "I would bet 2 of my sparkly rocks on it. Sad there's no one to take that bet."

"Hmm how about I bet on Rookfire with my raven feather? Is that a deal?" Shadowpaw wasn't sure what the worth of her feather was but it would look better on someone without a black pelt

Pondlily watched from the medicine den, her blue eyes fixed intently on Owlthroat. She gave the Enforcer a respectful dip of her head. Did she like Owlthroat very much? Not really, but she disliked Rookfire more, especially since he was the reason her warrior ceremony had been delayed.

Oh dear, that didn't sound good. Was the little one already sick? Her brows creased slightly and Nightshiver was about to tell the warrior - who seemed to be the kit's father - that they should take her to see the medicine cat, but Mudslide already stepped in. Nightshiver had to take a surprised step aside when the younger enforcer came and picked the kit up, a light gasp escaping her lips. But her expression softened, gently smiling at Kinkkit.
"I'm... ss...sorry.. honey, but it's... for the.. the best. The medicine.. cat... can..can helo you... feel better, I'm... s-sure."

Her gaze switched to Coyoteblossom, giving him a reassuring smile at his question, her eyes crinkle with moons of life.
"I don't.. mind... at all. Watching... o-over... the young is... my job."
She lowered her mismatched gaze to Snakekit, sitting down where she stood and giving the kitten an inviting wave of her paw.

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan warrior | mid 20s ]
[ killer aptitude t3 ACTIVE ]
[ “the eclipse” ]

rookfire opened his jaws impossibly further, finding a good grip and driving his teeth into owlthroats shoulder one more time, head jerking back like he was trying to tear sinewy meat from an old rabbit. it was more gentle than he wouldve been with a non clanmate, aiming for lingering pain rather than trying to tear flesh from bone for once. the blood running down his neck and throat was merely an afterthought, his ear stung, sure, and he was disappointed to let the other draw blood so early, but all things considered, he had fought through worse. the enforcers teeth had sliced through the delicate skin of his ear like a hot knife through butter, leaving a good part of it torn.
finally, as owlthroat shifted again, the former medicine cat dislodged his jaws from within owlthroats flesh and briefly retracted his claws to push off of the other, intent on sliding to a halt with a bit of distance between them. he stumbled with the force of it, mud splashing up his legs but caught himself without much embarrassment. fangs bared in a bloody grin, rookfire felt a giggle bubbling in his chest, clawing at his ribcage to break free as adrenaline pumped through him, numbing the bleeding nicks to his ear.

still, he remained quiet, thoughts no longer reeling but settled in quiet tunnel vision, the audience didnt matter, his past as a medicine cat did. warriors knew where it bled and what caused the most pain, rookfire could almost see the enforcers body deconstructing in front of his inner eye, wordlessly pointing out every injury that would instantly end the fight or tip the favours. a split second spent gaining is footing to pitying himself for the rules forbidding broken bones he readied himself.

rookfires tail flicked behind him with displaced calm, lingering,.. waiting, for owlthroat to make his move..it was not like he couldnt go again himself, but at the moment, it would be a better choice to look for an opening rather in the others attack than trying to replicate the paradox of unmovable force and unstoppable object. him being the unstoppable object, the part that broke the paradox. energy wasnt unlimited, and if one thing cannot be moved, no energy is great enough to do so. at this moment, you might be wondering what this tangent was getting at, well, sadly, rookfire has a rather forgetful roleplayer writing this at 3am who does not remember either.

screw this, no matter the outcome of his fight, the warrior was thrilled to be met with an equal in skill and ambition, though he hoped owlthroat would try a bit harder than simply shredding his remaining ear. dont get me wrong, he was in no rush to lose another ear, but at the moments, he had done a lot more damage than he had taken and it didnt feel like owlthroat was fighting in earnest yet.

Killer Aptitude T3 - Just A Scratch - Silver Tongue T2
The Dancing Bird

TW: Blood

The enforcer felt the teeth drive down into his shoulder again but with his whirl his plan came to fruit. His crooked yellow fangs tearing through Rookfire’s ear with delicious satisfaction. Rookfire fell away from his side, catching his feet once more and creating the natural opening for Owlthroat’s next move to brew. His mind was working at lightspeed, he couldn’t inflict anything serious but he could humiliate. He could blind.

Not in the traditional sense of course, that was a permanent injury. But something more temporary however was well on the table for the confines of this fight. His shoulder oozed a steady trickle of blood from where Rookfire’s teeth had pierced it, but there was no pain. He simply wouldn’t feel it until the battle had subsided and the adrenaline had shed from his mind. His mouth a twisted grin, almost taunting and beckoning in its own regard. His calculations set into place within mere glimpses of a second.

Now the real fight began.

Owlthroat’s yellow eyes glinted maniacally as he brought his own teeth down onto his tongue. A thick sticky crimson filling his mouth in seconds, then came his charge. It played itself out in two separate parts, closing the distance between Rookfire and opening his maw. Spraying and spittling the thick globs in the direction of his opponent’s murky eyes. Blinding was effective whether it was for a second or forever. His head haunched to protect his neck as he attempted to barrel into Rookfire and drag his blackned claws down his torso. Enough force to scar, not enough force to disembowel sideways the poor cat. He’d save that for the Clan’s real enemies.

His mind blurred with the force of his forward assault, his mind isolated. Entirely absorbed by the essence of power and metallic twang. There was no thought cast aside to what he might look like, the gleaming white of his fur burned red in the daylight. He was visibly terrifying, his own self-injury sealing the deal certifiably. Would his children meet his gaze? Seeing him in a light like this, he was a different animal altogether. They’d sparred with him and listened to his stories time and time again but being faced with a cold reality might strike them differently. He prayed to Starclan that he left them with feelings of resounding awe, not ones of horror.

Leaving a legacy of honour in his wake, not his twisted ego, not his glory. But to truly leave a legacy forged in strength, one which would protect them no matter where they found themselves in life. Starclan might not forgive him, but Owlthroat would forge a world where his children found themselves in favour. They would live with peace.

Just not him, never him.

There was work to be done.

[ “the eclipse” ]

within the blink of an eye, rookfire spotted owlthroats wicked grin and moved to get himself into a better position, dodge his attack or deal a heavy blow to his side. he failed, thick crimson tinted saliva hit him in the face, eyes flinching shut on instinct of throwing his head down in an attempt to rid himself of the sticky substance when owlthroat hit him like a bolder. he was thrown to the ground, blindly snapping and kicking up at the enforcer as he blinked the blood from his eye. no matter the disappointment coiling heavy in his stomach, he couldnt help but be impressed by the move. by the time the world stopped flickering through a crimson tint, owlthroat dragged claws down his torso, deep. he could almost feel dark claws catch on the raised skin covering his ribs, tearing through muscle and fat. claws extended, he slammed his hind lets into owlthroats soft, unprotected stomach and his maw snapped up for owlthroats other foreleg spreading saliva and their combined blood in pale fur. were this a real fight he'd be dead and it stung, but it wasnt, this was not about death, it was about winning. rookfire tried his best to draw a mental line between guilt for letting himself be put in this situation and the reality of their situation. the setting of this fight. he had not lost yet. no, this way only just beginning.

tender foreleg bones grinding against one another quietly between his jaws, enough to bruise but not enough to break, the warrior pulled it out from under his opponent while pushing him up with another harsh kick. the previously stable position owlthroat had lingered in was broken, sending him crashing sideways, off of rookfire. with his torso and stomach exposed briefly, at least until his mind caught up to what was happening, rookfire dug into his flesh with most of his weight. deep red stained white fur quickly as deep jagged gashes filled with blood, replicating the wound stinging at the side of his own torso.

it some weird way, it was almost poetic.

he had no time to waste, rookfire knew himself to be viscous and simple rules would not break that honour. while owlthroat might have something to lose in this, his kits and mate watching, rookfire only had himself, only needed himself. every stare on horror or disgust spurring him on, feeding into his ego. he thought of goldfish, of fadingstar and every other riverclanner as he brought his forepaws down on owlthroats chest with the force of his entire weight, aiming to push the air from the older warriors lungs. to stun him for longer, make him struggle to regain control. his own chest heaving with adrenaline and pain, a deep growl rumbled in his throat.

the air had long since taken on a heavy metallic taste, heavy and hot between the two bodies writhing in the slick mud. water mixing with blood and saliva. crimson dripping from one body to the other, running down the side of rookfires angular face and dripping down stickied dark fur to find a new home in owlthroats pale counterpart.

A fight. Finally.

A real one, not the scraps that occasionally popped up in the clearing while Grottopaw stood watch near Mother's den. No, this was one that could be learned from, regardless of who the victor was. And Grottopaw planned to take advantage. He crept as close to the edge of the circle as he could, for once ignoring the crush of the crowd that usually felt suffocating.

He did not cheer, or goad, or shout his support for whom he believed should come out on top. He simply sat and observed, eyes flickering between the Enforcer and the former healer as they clashed. Rookfire was too slim for Grottopaw to effectively put his tactics to use, so he chose to focus on Owlthroat's instead. The Enforcer fought with brute force, but not so wildly that he was uncontrollable - no, this was all practiced efficiency and violent order. Grottopaw's eyes were intense and unblinking as he tracked the warrior across the makeshift battlefield. Regardless of who won this, he knew who he would be seeking out for training.

The dark gray and white she-cat watched the vicious battle with a near neutral expression, only occasionally wincing at some of the blows. The other clans would disapprove to this display no doubt, but to Smokefern, it was a reminder. A brutal one, certainly. But it proved what Shadowclan would do in order to achieve its goals. She remained silent, not rooting for either side. Only observed, taking notes of each cat's tactics.

Sleepysunrise
[ 14 moons | She / Her | Shc Medicine Cat | Shadow Fiend ]

The taunting presence and blood filling the air after the commander called for the clan's attention, a tell-tale sign that either an event was to be hosted, or... An new member sought to challenge the enforcer rank and take someone's place. Her gaze was dull, tired with disinterest and confusion, locked within the confines of her dark den. She had wondered, on occasion, whether it was foolishness or pride that one had never dared challenge her when she was part of the Enforcer rank. Some part of her wondered whether Grousepaw was right, that it was just an effect from being the leader's granddaughter, or whether it was her skills that warded them off. She supposed she would never have an answer to that question, only left with the haunting echoes of her mind that sought to tear her down or rile her up; or keep her company, on a good day. Those faceless shadows that crept within her vision, always seeking for a place on her mind. She could only see their scars in the darkness, their contorted and mauled expressions - more often than she would admit the haunting presence of her siblings past and present. She always thought they were there. They never were. But their judgement was ever so real.

The roaring of encouragement outside brought out the roars of battle within her mind. When she looked down she did not see those dark coloured paws that kicked up a little dust as they walked, but blood-stained claws the ripped through pelts and through flesh in a flurry of movements she could no longer recall. The thick scent of blood that filled the air wasn't a sign of blaze or glory, but a sickly sweet lullaby that brought back the empty promise her mother had uttered to her ears once upon a time, and the painful betrayal that followed in its wake again. And again. And again. Sleepysunrise felt the tensity in her paws build up, charging in her claws. The empty confines of the medicine cat's den was to quiet, too loud, they wouldn't be quiet, they were too LOUD. Her claws ripped through her nest and as a mighty rasp left her maw;
"QUIET!"
She hissed to her mother's words, eyes wide open and breath panting, moss scattered across the empty area of the den where the medicine cats lay to rest. Her claws dug in the ground, her muscles taunt. Her breaths heavy and her throat stinging from the rasp within her voice when she called out. She needed out.

The air passing through her nose and lungs felt sharp, cold, freezing the sensitive skin of her body. Her paws tingled where pent up fury once resided, her breath slowly calmed down as if nothing happened. She blinked, she blinked again. Her mind warring between what she saw, heard, and what she knew to be true.
"You are dead."
She told herself, her voice cracking through its strained tone, speaking to the shadow haunting her mind. The memory of stone engulfing her body. Her bones. The memory of that apprentice claiming a dream's wounds became reality. Her claws unsheathed once more, piercing the ground.
"I killed you."
A quiet whisper is how those words came into the world, a realisation. A quiet whisper of a cat that felt no older, no stronger, than she was when in her kithood. Just a weak little thing trying to walk among the big and strong, killing mothers as it seemed. How ironic. She was certain she had come to kill her that day, that she was barely alive at this present time. After all, how could you live if your own mother wanted you dead? And yet it seemed the opposite had happened. She killed her. Turned to stone within her own dream, translated into a grim reality that couldn't be changed. Forever a statue in her mind. Sleepysunrise couldn't handle the daunting silence of the den anymore. She stood up, and left torn moss in her wake.

Outside the voices roared loud enough for the young medicine cat to visibly flinch, stepping away from the screaming tones of excited kits and warriors and seating herself a ways behind them, near the corners of her den. Their tall bodies obstructed most of her vision, but here and there she could see a claw swipe or a maw bite enough to keep her interest and watch. Rookfire and Owlthroat. One fallen, another a living experiment; each proven useful in some capacity since their respective failures or missteps. It would be a pain if Owlthroat got demoted. She would have to replace him if he did. As for Rookfire, she wasn't opposed to watching him rise above once more. The jealousy she once felt for his closeness to her mother had overtime changed into a dull ache, a lingering feeling.

Whoever won, or whoever lost, her mind wasn't focused on it. She was more focused on watching the few bits of the fight she could catch, feeling small - figuratively but also literally - in face of those who sat in front of her. She wanted to curl up and let the world disappear. The old man's eye flashed within her mind; was he watching? In the process of glancing up her eye caught something interesting, something different. She could see, clear as the sun above their heads, how Owlthroat bit his own tongue and spit the blood in Rookfire's face. Her mind got distracted. She watched. How disgusting, she thought, how vile. Don't tell me he'll be seeking healing for that? And yet, her gaze narrowed on the fight. She grinned. Her lip found its place between her teeth and she bit; the harder she bit the more excited she got, watching the fight. There was something exhilarating about this odd way of fighting. The tank and the nimble. She wondered if she could take both of them in a fight at once. A laugh bubbled in her throat at the thought. That would be fun. So, so fun... Beating both of them. At once. Proving how strong she was and could be to her elders. She wanted to call out for the Owlman to beat him up, for the rookbird to teach the other a lesson. Her head tilted as she watched on, little muffled giggles bubbling here and there. She could tell him about this fight later. He would like it, she was sure.

a fight. fight. fight.

lambthistle isn't the biggest fan of fights, mostly because she thinks there's better things that people's energy could be spent on. but, hey, it's none of her business what people do. besides, she also understands that it's just the universal way of communicating — getting your paws a bit bloody. except..couldn't, in this situation, the cats just be evaluated based on their presence in the clan..? he feels like this is kind of inconvenient. then again, he's sitting here watching it, too, so it's not like he can judge anyone.

rookfire and owlthroat! for someone who's life mission is to talk to everyone at least once, the feline struggles to remember a time she's talked to either of them. she's seen them around the clan, of course, but has never interacted with the two. with the way they were ripping into each other, teeth gnashing, the scent of copper in the air - well, she has enough sense to reason that they probably won't be up for a conversation right after this.

considering he's never interacted with either, and doesn't believe everything he hears around camp, he's not sure who he's rooting for. probably both. so, gaze sliding to the cat nearest to him, lambthistle leans over. "who do you want to win?"

Enforcer Commander
Shadow Fiend | Agatha Kitty | Kitty Softpaws T2

What the hell was happening?!? Was he the leader of monkeys?? It sure felt like it as a ring of cats seemed to encircle he and Bleedingpaw. The fight was over there! Not here!

Hawkbite stared blankly, gaze shifting from one cat to another as they started rambling on about the fight and some kits were bickering. But first on the chopping block was Flytail. Hawkbite would cast a glance over to his direction, flicking his ears as pieced together who he was referring to. "Owlthroat is quite the force, but he lets his ego go to his head. It was his downfall in his spar with me," he spoke. "He's a great warrior, but he's got something to prove today," he'd keep the comment vague. There wasn't a need to drag out dirt on the Enforcer right now. [ Tallstar ]

Next, children. Dear stars, he was a kitten-magnet for whatever reason. Mushroomkit, Pinekit, then Adderpaw all showed up. Before the sensation of being overwhelmed drowned him, the words from one of the kittens made him seethe. His green eyes shot towards Pinekit. They'd shoot to Adderpaw, although the heat behind his eyes weren't targeted at them. "Adderpaw's right, Pinekit. You'd best apologize to Mushroomkit before I personally have your apprentice ceremony pushed off. 'Mouse' isn't a bad name. In fact, one of the best cats I've ever had the honor to help train and work with ended up an Enforcer, and he was a 'Mouse'," the tone in his voice came off gruff, a near growl. I won't let them disgrace your name, Silverlark. He tried to be softer with kits, but that was simply a topic Hawkbite didn't mess around with. "You should really care about your family more than you're displaying. Family is very important," he warned. [ burntToast | sturgeonwind ]

He'd address Mushroomkit next, having heard their question but growing intolerant of the sibling's input. He'd compose himself a little, his tone less irritated and more monotone, though stern. "It's a challenge for the Enforcer rank. To get into the special rank, a warrior must win a match and prove themselves worthy of it. That's what that dark cat, Rookfire, is doing right now," he'd explain, casting a glance towards Adderpaw once more. "How about you three go sit closer to Lionpaw. You can't be standing in front of me right now, I might have to break up the fight happening," he warned gently, shooing them out of the way. Poor Lionpaw, they'd likely become his problem, but his son was sensible. He could handle it. [ Dolomedes |

Lionpaw and Mistlewhisker had seemed to appear up from behind him on either side, taking seat there. What a power move. A family of misfortunate relations huddled like a brick wall. He'd lean into Bleedingpaw a little, more for his own comfort. The younger -- though larger -- tom was a comfort in the midst of this chaos. Even in his loafed form, the feeling of the golden's fur against his legs was enough to ground him. His tail would flick, tapping Lionpaw then Mistlewhisker respectively to acknowledge their presence. Although, his tail would rest on the deputy's paws, a small showcase of affection she'd probably be the only one picking up. "I couldn't have worded it better, myself," he'd half-purr, his tone taking an total 180 as he responded to Mistlewhisker. He supposed he didn't think about how this looked to Lionpaw... having Nightshiver as a mother when she wasn't truly his mate. "As I stated before to Flytail. Owlthroat lost his spar to me, not due to a lack of skill, but because he let his guard down enough when his ego ran high. He thought he was winning and got cocky. I hope this doesn't happen today with Rookfire," [ Rowan | Mica | Rani ]

The Commanders attention was briefly drawn towards a familiar scent, Hollowpaw. The apprentice appeared to have wanted to come towards him, but with the cats suddenly gathering at his paws, retreated. Well, they could retreat, but not without a pleading 'help me' stare from the older tom. Hollowpaw's pelt would melt into the mix of others as more cats gathered and more cats swallowed him up. [ rift ]

Hawkbite's claws sank in and out of the ground, watching the sparring continue on. He was on edge, for a good reason, but not enough that he'd neglect to interact with his clanmates. Part of him wished he was up there, taking part in the spar. There'd yet to be a challenge for his position, but he knew the day would eventually come. He was ready for it. For now, he simply had to be ready to tear two fighting cats apart. His tail tip twitched, tapping on Mistlewhisker's paws with anticipation.

It didn't matter what they were talking about. The moment Scorp saw her forced friend sitting beside a stranger, was the moment she'd have to intervene. The dark tabby bolted across the clearing, her large paws thudding across the ground as she skidded to a halt, nearly running straight into Hollowpaw.

"HULLO, HI!

She'd eye Fishpaw suspiciously. That apprentice looked familiar, but she couldn't put her paw on why... it didn't matter. Her attention on Hollowpaw was short-lived as she glanced over at Rookfire and Owlthroat going at each others... throats. "I like Rookfire, it's cool to see him fighting. Owlthroat looks so cool, too. Maybe one day I'll be up there fighting, too!" she spoke. It was clear she didn't hear anything Hollowpaw had just spoke. Although her opinion on the situation wasn't that important anyway. Scorp honestly could care less which way this went, it didn't directly affect her anyway.

She'd scoot closer to Hollowpaw, their pelts nearly touching as she fixated on the sparring cats. The blood and violence excited her. Excited her more than she really understands as her claws involuntarily sank in and out of the mud. She wanted to try that. She wanted to sink her fangs into something... into someone...

By the time the hoard had gathered the normally sunny tom had Had it and his ears were pinned flat to his head. Yeah his dislike for babies was well confirmed and now he viewed Adderpaw as one too, far below her siblings Scorpionpaw and Grottopaw who he actually regarded well.

Letting Hawkbite say his peace the bengal sighed, fully ready to take a scolding if it meant being freed from the crowd even if a part of him ached at acting poorly in front of Mistlewhisker.
"Mushroomkit, Pinekit, Adderpaw. This is not ok behavior to have in front of an enforcer. Go sit with Nightshiver and argue there if you must but Id recommend asking her all your questions before embarrassing yourself in front of the deputy too."
It was Nightshivers job to child mind so she could do that Please. @Rowan (https://warriorcatsonline.com/forums/member.php?u=21355)

Mistlewhisker though? He didnt pin his ears at her, instead nodding respectfully as he tilted his head taking the view. It seemed most cats were in agreement about Owlthroat keeping his rank but that Rookfire could well prove he deserved it too. Watching blows being exchanged it was clear the twos skill level was high and relatively even, injuries being traded without one gaining ground over the other just yet. Once more the bengal was struck by the constant realization he'd never get this good regardless of training, simply incapable of pulling off the moves thrown with his limbs. It hurt, as always, but it was a hurt he was used to and so didnt show, committing tactics to memory as he watched, musing.
"Both want the victory bad it seems. Personally I dont blame Rookfire for his instability and anger after he lost the medicine cat role. He did work rather hard for it and while Dawnstars decision had merit it was ultimately made when Rookfire hadnt done anything wrong and he didnt even get to hear in private but after it'd already been announced at the gathering.

That hurts, but I think being an enforcer and being shown the clan trusts him to be one of us and that his talents (which do exist) are recognized will settle him. If it occurs, though while Ive nothing against Owlthroat I hope it does for my friend."
Another blow and the toms head tilted the other way, analyzing. Was it just him or did Owlthroat not look very 'cocky' for someone to be touted for that to be his fatal flaw? He mightve learned, in that case, from his mistakes. The Rookfire might need to be creative to find an 'in'.

"What happens if they tie? That might net the best case scenario of the clan gaining/keeping two skilled enforcers if that is how it works."

LAMBTHISTLE
she/he | 13 moons | curly furred cream, grey, and black cat, protruding fangs, and brown eyes with green sectoral heterochromia
[ no purrks ]

a fight. fight. fight.

lambthistle isn't the biggest fan of fights, mostly because she thinks there's better things that people's energy could be spent on. but, hey, it's none of her business what people do. besides, she also understands that it's just the universal way of communicating — getting your paws a bit bloody. except..couldn't, in this situation, the cats just be evaluated based on their presence in the clan..? he feels like this is kind of inconvenient. then again, he's sitting here watching it, too, so it's not like he can judge anyone.

rookfire and owlthroat! for someone who's life mission is to talk to everyone at least once, the feline struggles to remember a time she's talked to either of them. she's seen them around the clan, of course, but has never interacted with the two. with the way they were ripping into each other, teeth gnashing, the scent of copper in the air - well, she has enough sense to reason that they probably won't be up for a conversation right after this.

considering he's never interacted with either, and doesn't believe everything he hears around camp, he's not sure who he's rooting for. probably both. so, gaze sliding to the cat nearest to him, lambthistle leans over. "who do you want to win?"

Her one good ear swiveled as she heard another cat approach her. Smokefern looked away from the fight to see who it was, and found him to be a cat she was unfamiliar with. That part was not much of a surprise, she supposed. Cool tone eyes turned to then look at the crowd, which had grown since she arrived. Was that Adderpaw? The gray and white she-cat might have to make her way over there soon. For now though, she wasn't going to just ignore Lambthistle's question.

"I hardly have a preference." Smokefern finally said, somewhat returning her attention back to the bloodshed. "Rookfire is... Ambitious I suppose. Everyone who wants to be an Enforcer is. But Owlthroat does a good enough job as one."

another enforcer challenge - something squirrelrise has only experienced once before. the first time, it was shrewstep and foggymask, who both were no longer enforcers. this time, it was between owlthroat and rookfire. she wouldn't say she's close with either of the two in the slightest, but she was familiar with them enough considering they're her clanmates. unfortunately, she was just unfamiliar enough with them that she isn't sure who deserves the spot of enforcer more.

owlthroat had, by what she's observed, been a great enforcer. he was no doubt a skilled fighter (even if squirrelrise wanted, and did, look away), but.. the same could be said for rookfire in her opinion. the latter was simply younger and thinner than owlthroat, so she feels he's at a bit of a disadvantage. still, they were both respectable in her eyes. the few times she's interacted with rookfire, he's been a bit quiet - not that she could judge anyone for that - but he's gotten the job done. she's never heard, or seen, owlthroat slacking off either.

settling near the front of the crowd, the small warrior fights back a cringe as she watches the two toms rip and tear into each other. she's certain that if this were a real fight and hawkbite wasn't there to stop the two from killing each other, the injuries would surely be more severe than they already are. with an uncomfortable shuffle of her paws, she glances away for the fight for a few moments to gauge her clanmates reactions.

Doeflame

She was late. Surprising, even for her, considering this was such a large (and loud) event. But hey, she was a heavy sleeper. Anyway, she was here now.

So Rookfire was challenging Owlthroat. Interesting choice on his behalf; if it was her she would have chosen a cat that wasn't the size of a fox, but each to their own. If the former medic thought he could beat him, well, they'd see how it went. It would make for an epic fight either way, considering their battle prowess.

Doeflame's gaze travelled to Tuftedtusk, where he was sitting with his kits, watching his mate fight. She wondered what was going through her brother's head at that moment; whether he was excited for the fight or scared that Owlthroat would get hurt.

For a moment, Doeflame considered sitting with the family, but then, Tuftedtusk probably wanted a moment with just his kits. She may be his sister, but they had never been close, and she did have some boundaries. Besides, there were plenty of good spots at the front. She claimed one, taking a seat next to a russet she-cat. Squirrelrise, that was her name; they had interacted before.

"Hi," Doeflame said cheerfully. "Has anything interesting happened yet? Oh, and who are you going for?"

[ 64 moons | She / Her | Shc Forever Queen | Kitty Softpaws T1 ]

Oh stars, was something happening between Pinekit and Mushroomkit again? The forever queen lifted her head after agreeing to sit with Snakekit to see Bleedingpaw and Hawkbite deal with two kits and an apprentice, her ear erect to catch what they were saying. She had heard her name, and it alerted her to the situation. She was frankly relieved to find it was just Pinekit running his mouth and nothing physical this time, but his behaviour left a knot in her stomach. Still, she smiled at the pair, giving them only a slightly stern look. They were already being scolded by the commander and an apprentice, after all.

"Come,,, come now. You... heard them... You can sssit with m-me and.. Snakekit. I'll.. glad.... gladly answer... any.. questions, too. But. You have.. have to be... nice.. to each other."
She wouldn't hesitate to send one or both of them back to the nursery if either decided they wouldn't listen to her. Or have Hawkbite make true on his promise. She wasn't one to threaten, but she realised that she had to be more stern with some of these kittens in order to ensure they wouldn't cause trouble with each other.

Uh- What? Suddenly his sister was being rushed off to the med den followed by their father. A frown crossed the tom's maw as he heard his father pawning him off on some... cat. Two different coloured blue eyes narrowed to slits, returning to Nightshiver. That's when he name was called.

Hm? What was going on over there? Fun? Trouble? Snakekit's ears perked as he looked past Nightshiver at the other kits. He knew Mushroomkit, but wasn't quite sure if he'd ever met Pinekit. He silently observed them through narrowed eyes. Imagine being caught getting in trouble, he thought to himself, a mischievous grin crossing the kit's maw.

The roaring of encouragement outside brought out the roars of battle within her mind. When she looked down she did not see those dark coloured paws that kicked up a little dust as they walked, but blood-stained claws the ripped through pelts and through flesh in a flurry of movements she could no longer recall. The thick scent of blood that filled the air wasn't a sign of blaze or glory, but a sickly sweet lullaby that brought back the empty promise her mother had uttered to her ears once upon a time, and the painful betrayal that followed in its wake again. And again. And again. Sleepysunrise felt the tensity in her paws build up, charging in her claws. The empty confines of the medicine cat's den was to quiet, too loud, they wouldn't be quiet, they were too LOUD. Her claws ripped through her nest and as a mighty rasp left her maw;

Jeez Louise! The noise! The ruckus! The chaos! Birdecho cracked open an eye, blinking a few times to clear the sleep from her vision before peering down at the crowd beneath her. Oh? Had she missed something? Blood was spattered on the muddy ground, Owlthroat bleeding from the mouth and Rookfire bleeding from somewhere Birdecho couldn't see on his dark pelt. She raised a brow, scanning the crowd for a high rank just in case this wasn't allowed--she wasn't going to rat on them, of course, but she wasn't inclined on getting in trouble by association. Though, not many cats seemed to look up, so they might not even see her in the cedar tree hanging over them. But, there was Mistlewhisker, with Hawkbite right next to her. Birdecho smirked at the gaggle of kittens surrounding the Enforcer Commander, tail twitching on the bough.

good dad, look at that, what's that like? he's so great, yes good for him, stupid though, very stupid yes very dumb all of them

Words circled in Birdecho's head, catching tangled roots with dark talons and tugging Birdecho's attention this way and that. Her nose twitched, and she batted the thoughts away with her ears. Birdecho sniffed, gaze growing absent as she lost interest in watching Hawkbite drown in kittens.

Focusing on the two battling warriors, Birdecho began to put the pieces together. An Enforcer challenge, no doubt. Rookfire going for Owlthroat's position. The young warrior canted her head, unblinking eyes scrutinizing her former? friend and his opponent. She knew very little about Owlthroat, so she didn't particularly care about him. Win or lose, all the same to her. Rookfire, however... Birdecho let her chin fall onto her white paws. He'd been as close with Mossfreckle as she, and it seemed he took the tom's sudden choice of demotion and sudden disappearance hard, though Birdecho could hardly blame him. If she had been given a position of power and had it ripped away from her with no answers given, she would also crash out! Birdecho hadn't seen Rookfire around at all--she hadn't really been looking--but if this was what he wanted, good for him.

Amber eyes caught a glint from the medicine den, and a smile stretched across Birdecho's face. She slipped down the tree, her small body barely making a disturbance in the mud when she landed. Shouts brought flashes of light to Birdecho's peripheral vision, making her journey to the medicine den a little wobbly as she tried to avoid being blinded by her own head.

Birdecho stopped just outside the den entrance, dipping down and peeking into the darkness. "Hey sis! Enjoying the show? Who ya bettin' on?"

Mushroomkit
burntToast | seeingstars | sturgeonwind | SuspiciousMindz | Rani | Estelle -> I will stop mentioning sus + Rani, just wanted to show Mush's reaction to them ( even if she was more focused on other things )

The sheer fright that flooded her very being had Mushroomkit freezing up, staring with terrified wide eyes as Pinekit approached her. She had only wanted to know what was happening, she didn't want to be hurt again. The russet feline couldn't even bring herself to get away like she needed to otherwise Pinekit was going to hurt her again! Why couldn't he just leave her alone! She just wanted to be left alone but Pinekit was always hunting her down and tracking her around camp no matter where she was. She zoned out any words that were said until suddenly Adderpaw was there.

She sniffled, and managed to stumble to the apprentice's side, hiding behind her so that Pinekit wouldn't be able to see her. Mushroomkit was happy that Dovekit was napping in the nursery, the last thing she wanted was for Dovekit to hear Pinekit's words about her over and over and over again. It seems though, that Pinekit has managed to get Adderpaw and her in trouble as well, based on Bleedingpaw's words. She didn't mean to be scared, she was supposed to be a Shadowclan cat, but she couldn't help it. Mushroomkit hated feeling like she was prey in her own home but that's all she was in Pinekit's eyes. Someone to hurt, and for what? What did Mushroomkit do to Pinekit? Offer a place in her family? Offer to play a game? Existed?

The forever queen called them over, Mushroomkit managed to tear her eyes off the dark pelt of her friend to glance in the queen's direction and she managed to give a little nod. She wouldn't move until Adderpaw did though, her mind screamed to not leave Adderpaw's side while Pinekit was right there. Adderpaw would protect her, and would understand, and was kind. The russet feline brushed against Adderpaw's fur with her head, purring anxiously in attempt to calm and comfort herself.

Killer Aptitude T3 - Just A Scratch - Silver Tongue T2
The Dancing Bird

TW: Blood

Owlthroat truly revelled in his success, his claws finding contact with Rookfire’s side. But the tom wasn’t daft, Owlthroat’s blinding may have given him an advantage and secured a hit. But he soon felt the writhe of hind legs connecting with his underbelly pushing him back. Rookfire’s sharp teeth piercing his foreleg drawing another few droplets, Rookfire could’ve bit down harder and snapped the limb. In a foreign sense it was comforting to know he still had the rules in his mind, particularly with the barbarism the two had quickly made their descent. A permanent injury would be less than ideal for his job. A job he intended to hold onto with gasping breaths and fire like spirit.

The two had almost switched positions, Owlthroat now exposed and vulnerable to what could come next. And dear Starclan did it come. Rookfire wasted none of his momentum and lashed forward, a similar sporting injury to the one he’d delivered moments ago to Rookfire. A matching pair resembling albeit two sides of the same coin. It burned through his thick pelt casting more of the all to familiar ooze, in the back of his mind he was cursing yet another visit to Sleepysunrise after this was all over. He’d seen enough of her face for his whole life if he was being honest with himself. His teeth gritted through the mark and he steeled himself once more.

Rookfire rose up, aiming to bring down his fury onto Owlthroat’s chest, in a split second the Enforcer rolled further onto his back. A risky gamble but a successful one, Rookfire’s paws landing on either side of the dirt surrounding his lungs. He’d saved his breath for now.

The white and red lumbering giant dug his claws into the earth in a flash, pulling himself free. Not completely from reach, but with enough space to pull something off. This gamble came with even more risk than the last. A move so precise, it was almost an impossibility to land in the heat of claws. One he’d only ever seen and practised as a mere amusement.

Owlthroat was a gambling man.

Honed Skill Activated - Staff Approved PP

The large cat wheeled his body around, both hind legs lifting with the force of a mule. He needed no claws for this. Both paws flew backwards, connecting squarely with Rookfire’s tiny hitbox of a jaw. Rookfire spun upwards, riveting then plummeting, directly onto his back.

Owlthroat turned himself back around, his tail lashed furiously with a nervous energy. Disbelievement lashed into every inch of his face that he’d managed to pull off a stunt of such magnitude. As the two birds had danced. His eyes were slitted, fixed upon Rookfire.

Watching.
Waiting.

Smokefern
|| She/her || 34 Moons ||

Smokefern's head dipped in a shallow nod of agreement. It would make things easier if Enforcers were chosen, but Shadowclan never liked to do things the easy way. And in some ways, she could see Dawnstar's reasoning. Anyone could want to be a warrior, but a test proved dedication. Not to mention it made sure she never got promoted unexpectedly. If there was one good thing out of the process, in Smokefern's mind it was that.

"In the end, Dawnstar would decide. Who impressed her the most would get it. Or both, if the amount of blood pleases her I suppose." The one ear warrior dryly joked.

Undertaker
March 25th, 2025, 03:53 PM
The hulking feline left the sanctuary of her den unnoticed and sat on her ledge. She coils her tail around her large paws and fixes her eyes on the pair battling. It started dull in her opinion, more so on Owlthroat's part than Rookfire's. Whereas Owlthroat left Rookfire with an ear wound, the bloody mess that was Owlthroat's shoulder left a better impression on the clan leader.

Yet it picked up quite quickly after that. Her huge black claws bite into the stone below her as the stink of blood tickles her nostrils. Her pupils shrink to small pinpricks as she stuffs down that primal urge. No point in getting worked up when she'd be having none of the fun. Her tail coils more tightly around her paws while her eyes follow Owlthroat and Rookfire's fight.

Both were getting into the battle, it was so much fun, right?! It was far too easy to ignore the eyes, judgment, and speculation, and throw yourself into the heat. They both looked like proper ShadowClan cats now, even the former minnow. Dawnstar was impressed with Owlthroat's latest tactic, spitting blood in Rookfire's eyes was brilliant. For a while, Dawnstar had thought Owlthroat was nothing more than an egotistical brusier, actually, she still thought that cause he was. But he's proven to have some brains in his head when he tried hard enough.

Despite her judgment regarding Owlthroat's lack of brain cells, she knew he was brighter than he came off as. Unfortunately, his ego made him come off dumber than a rock at times. He made mistakes that cost him respect, at least in her eyes. Dawnstar disliked egotistical, arrogant hairballs, the only reason Owlthroat got away was because he knew how to be one without being obnoxious about it. He was liked well enough, he had a family, a mate, and a rank among the elites. But he was not without his faults, otherwise, Hawkbite wouldn't have recommended him in Tuftedtusk's place.

As for Rookfire. He was always a fascinating one. Brought in by a traitor, and rising in rank faster than a striking hawk. His medical knowledge, willingness, and commitment brought him to even greater heights, only to have it all crash down on him not long after earning everything he couldn't have in his former clan. Bad luck, or perhaps the stars were against him, whatever the reason, Dawnstar had grown wary of him. Yet even her wariness of him wore off into nothingness when Rookfire hadn't done anything to keep it.

She wouldn't say she trusts or distrusts him more than the rest of her clanmates now. After his fall from grace, it had seemed like he disappeared, or slid under her radar for a time, at least until she started hearing about the work he put into training apprentices. Suprpassing even Hawkbite in time. These days, it seemed Rookfire had a paw in every apprentice's training, putting in the work to reclaim his loss. The little guy, the prey, the loser, ShadowClan's underdog, his tale was quite riveting for those who put the effort into understanding it, inspiring even. It was rare for cats to put in the effort to be great again once they fall.

Rookfire didn't have much of anything attaching himself to ShadowClan, unlike Owlthroat. One who had everything to lose vs one who had nothing to lose. She had no idea why Rookfire wanted a place among the Enforcers back. To have an identity beyond being a warrior, recognition, ambition? His motivation was tougher to read than Owlthroat. Regardless of the motive, he earned some points for falling and getting up again.

Even as she watched the two get tangled into a mess of blood and fur, she could hear the blatant favor for one's victory over the other. Yet it wasn't like Rookfire had no one on his side. Dawnstar? She didn't truly care who won as they were both decently competent cats. Owlthroat had the potential, but Rookfire had medical knowledge and training, which made him beneficial. ShadowClan wouldn't suffer regardless of the winner or loser.

The fight wouldn't decide the winner; Dawnstar would have to weigh their past, accomplishments, among other variables. Huh, this was the first Enforcer Challenge she'd have to think long and hard about. How tedious.

Sootstorm approached the fight, her green eyes fixed on the two warriors within the makeshift battlering. The gray-and-white warrior's ears flicked, her tail tip twitching. She settled down beside Swiftcreek, emerald hues narrowing down to slits. ''Rookfire's determined if he thinks he can outsmart Owlthroat,'' Sootstorm meowed softly to the other warrior. ''Owlthroat's a great fighter, and he's done well in his position.''

Shadowclan warrior - 19 moons - Large dark brown-and-white tabby she-cat with green eyes.

~~~Mosstangle had been curled up in her nest near the entrance of the warriors den, watching what she could of the fight. It had been quite interesting and a chance to learn a few new tricks. Finally, the crowd grew too large for her to remain inside.
The large tabby slipped out of the den, watching the pair as they fought. She had few interactions with either of them, so didn't have much of an opinion on who she would root for. Spitting blood into his opponent's eyes was definitely a unique method that gave Owlthroat a few points with her. She had also noticed quite a few cats rooting for him, as opposed to Rookfire who, if she had her facts right, used to be a riverclan cat.
She wondered if that made bias within the cheering cats, or if it was something about Rookfire himself. Regardless, she sat beside a pair not too far from her. Swiftcreek and Sootstorm, she thought their names were. Her ears perked at Sootstorm's comment. "Didn't Rookfire serve as an enforcer before? What happened to that, anyway?" She asked, wrapping her tail around her paws.
''Rookfire was promoted to medicine cat apprentice, then demoted due to an omen that Mossfreckle had before he died,'' Sootstorm explained, looking at Mosstangle. ''Him being promoted---then demoted---took away his Enforcer rank, so I guess he wants it back and is trying to impress Hawkbite and Dawnstar, which led to him challenging Owlthroat.''
It didn't matter what they were talking about. The moment Scorp saw her forced friend sitting beside a stranger, was the moment she'd have to intervene. The dark tabby bolted across the clearing, her large paws thudding across the ground as she skidded to a halt, nearly running straight into Hollowpaw.
"HULLO, HI!
She'd eye Fishpaw suspiciously. That apprentice looked familiar, but she couldn't put her paw on why... it didn't matter. Her attention on Hollowpaw was short-lived as she glanced over at Rookfire and Owlthroat going at each others... throats. "I like Rookfire, it's cool to see him fighting. Owlthroat looks so cool, too. Maybe one day I'll be up there fighting, too!" she spoke. It was clear she didn't hear anything Hollowpaw had just spoke. Although her opinion on the situation wasn't that important anyway. Scorp honestly could care less which way this went, it didn't directly affect her anyway.
She'd scoot closer to Hollowpaw, their pelts nearly touching as she fixated on the sparring cats. The blood and violence excited her. Excited her more than she really understands as her claws involuntarily sank in and out of the mud. She wanted to try that. She wanted to sink her fangs into something... into someone...
➢ She nods along to whatever Fishpaw says heedlessly. And then, at the loud loud, Hollowpaw's attention is sudden ripped back to reality and face to face with Scorpionpaw. Dawnspawn. The loud scream of the older shecat's nickname sending a shiver down her spine and they clearly flinch at it.
"Hi, hi, Scorps" Her reply is gentle, a formal greeting was off the table as she grabbed pieces of herself from different sectors of their mind. "Good to hear that you have an idea of what's happening this time, ha ha!" They cast a glance at Hawkbite, his desperate look in return almost made her chuckle, and it sparked an unknown urge to go wait by his side for the end of the spar. She was running off a few catnaps worth of sleep and a drive of unknown energy. "I....I am going to go sit by Hakwbite, If you two wish to join me in such an endeavor." They mew quietly, no longer holding it usual under tones of distant excitement. So she stands, departing the group in a instant. Is that how they felt when they left.
Weaving through cats and avoiding eye contact she makes their way to Hawkbite. "Hawkbite!" A call for his attention as they approach and nod her head in respect, taking a seat next to him, regardless of how many cats are in the way. They had a choice move or be pushed. She needed someone to ground them. His previous comment did keep them on edge, they didn't need getting anymore scars...
ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan warrior | mid 20s ]
[ killer aptitude t3 ACTIVE ]
[ “the eclipse” ]
before rookfires paws could slam down on owlthroats chest, the enforcer rolled out from beneath him, only sparing him enough time to blink before he spun around. there was a split second of confusion before large white paws collided with his maw, slamming jaws together roughly. the motion rattled through his head and down his spine, a stinging pain settling at the hinges connecting rows of sharp teeth.
out of reflex, his body made the attempt to turn during the fall. he managed to land mostly on his side, air forced from his lungs, instead of exposing his vulnerable stomach. quickly, rolled back onto his paws, dug tightly into the soil. the ragged edge of his fang, freshly broken off but not causing any pain, stood out to him before his blood coated tongue recognised the sharp shard in his mouth. "not so bad old man" rookfire allowed himself to comment, grin showing both the humour and broken off tooth he spit it out before he lunged at owlthroat again.
if the older wanted to play extra rookfire would go long.
instead of dodging this time, the warrior steeled himself for impact. he could tank one hit, simple distraction, to allow him to push off and land on his opponents back. claws dug into fur and flesh to gain stability before closing jaws around owlthroats neck. thick fur tickled the back of his throat and in his eyes, forcing tear fluid to mix with blood splatter where it ran down his face. pressed close to the others body, it would allow him to both stick on as long as possible as well as bail. every one of his opponents move would drive teeth further into his flesh and send claws digging for hold without a care for the pain it caused.
he'd seen how things ended if one didnt pay attention, crushed spines, lasting pain. one badly healed injury was enough to deal with.
Adderpaw stepped out of the way the moment the head enforcer began to address pinekit, Hawkbite seemed quite upset at the insult used more than he was about there being an insult at all. She supposed the name ‘mouse’ meant something to him. Then he went on refer to pinekit as if he were family with mushroomkit which Adderpaw knew was incorrect– or at least she believed it to be. Mushroomkit only had her mother and her sister Dovekit. Pinekit and Mushroom weren't related? However the point still stood, no one should treat any cat like this. She was vaguely aware of the fact that Mushroomkit had taken to hiding behind her as if she believed Adderpaw was able to protect. Adderpaw wanted to feel flattered by her friend's trust in her but she only felt a deep seated disappointment for mushroomkits trust had been put into incapable paws. The younger kit was innocently unaware at how incapable Adderpaw really was at everything. Hawkbite had told them to go sit with someone named lionpaw and turned to speak to someone else and suddenly Adderpaw was reminded of how crowded it was here. Was the temperature dropping or was it just her? Bleedingpaw was suddenly talking to them in a tone that was all too similar to the one Queen’s used when scolding kits for misbehaving. Mushroomkit didn't deserve that kind of treatment! All she had done was ask the enforcer a question, she did deserve to be disrespected! She didn't get why bleedingpaw was talking to her like she was a kit- had she also done somthing wrong? She knew her words didn't sound right!! This is because she had repeated them enough times in her head or groomed her fur enough times! She wouldn't make the same mistake again. Adderpaw’s gaze immediately dropped towards her paws for she knew if she made eye contact she would see the hatred in bleedingpaw’s eyes. The older apprentice told them to go to Nightshiver. To lionpaw or Nightshiver!? Which one? Adderpaw would ask but the words died before they even reached her throat. Maybe she shouldn't have gotten out her nest this morning, she hadn't groomed her fur enough times- she need a new hill to sit on, the birds didn't sing quite as early as they usually did, she hadn’t repeated the words enough, she forgot to say sorry last night, count to three, she needed to breath, paws to heavy, it's getting colder–
The sudden contact of some brushing against the braided tabby's fur pulled her from getting lost in her spiralling thoughts. Her surroundings focused again and mushroomkit’s presence grounded her once more. The russet shekit seemed to unintentionally have that effect on Adderpaw, and the apprentice appreciated it more than she would ever be able to truly express. Just when Adderpaw had calmed down Pinekit piped up again. How dumb could a cat be, surely he must know that talking to an enforcer- HEAD enforcer like that was beyond dangerous and idiotic. The words pinekit said only fueled Adderpaw's forming hate for the kit. Adderpaw had had enough of him and his words and she was sure mushroomkit didn't want to hang around here any longer. Not staying long enough to hear the rest, Adderpaw turned to mushroomkit and nudged in the direction of Nightshiver. It was a silent indication that they were leaving. When words failed she hoped actions would speak louder, and with that she approached the queen making sure mushroomkit was following. Ofcourse she didn't want to go sit with Nightshiver- she didn't want to sit with anyone but mushroomkit. However it might be best to just stick with an adult for mushroomkit's sake. She could practically feel the eyes of other burning into her pelt. Whether it was really or not, she felt it
She may be no mind reader, but she could read the room enough to recognize that he was really only getting more aggravated.
The large tabby padded over to quickly mediate the situation. "Sounds like someone needs a break." She said before taking the black and white kit by the scruff and pulling him away from the other poor cats he was bothering. She walked over to the nursery and sat in front of it, putting the kit down. "Be quiet and watch the fight, or go back into the nursery." SQUIRRELRISE
she/her | 20 moons | small, scarred russet and brown molly with white markings and yellow eyes
[ chill of death, hulk SMASH ]
ears swiveling at a voice, squirrelrise turns her head. it was..doeflame. they'd interacted a couple of times before. though, she still isn't able to say she knows much about the molly other than her name.
"..hi," she greets back, fluffy tail wrapping around her paws. she shoots a glance at the two toms still fighting, and..if she's honest, it looks like owlthroat is winning. "er..no, I don't..think s-so. other than..owlthroat s-sspitting blood at..rookfire." she meows, turning her attention back to the fight just long enough to see the enforcer throw the former medic. this was all ..uncomfortable. more so than the last enforcer challenge.
then again, it was shrewstep and foggymask..they didn't seem intent on mauling eachother, she thinks, brows knitted. "I don't..know. I think..both are..g-good..choices. for enforcer." rookfire had been enforcer before, too, and he hadn't done poorly. owlthroat was also good at his job from what she knows.
[ kittycatburmise ]
Doeflame
"Spitting blood?" Doeflame echoed, gaze drifting again to the fight. It was definitely bloody. She figured Owlthroat had spat blood at Rookfire's eyes to blind him, but maybe he had just done it out of spite. Probably not, though, despite how amusing that would be.
Doeflame nodded in understanding when Squirrelrise said she didn't know who she wanted to win. She was right; both were capable warriors. "Fair. I'm going for Owlthroat." She didn't know the tom well, and from what she had seen he was the serious, no-nonsense type (a trait she wasn't fond of, especially in Enforcers; she wanted ones that were fun-loving and lenient), but so was Rookfire, and Owlthroat was her brother's mate. Of course she was going to support him.
She cast a glance at the fight. It was hard to follow what was happening, but from what she could tell Owlthroat had kicked Rookfire in the jaw and broke one of his fangs, and now the former medicine cat had his teeth deep in Owlthroat's neck. Both seemed as injured as each other.
Around her, she heard cats betting on who would win. Deciding to steal the idea, Doeflame turned her attention back to Squirrelrise. "Wanna bet? If Owlthroat wins, you have to give me a trinket, but if Rookfire wins I have to give you one." She didn't know if Squirrelrise liked that sort of thing, but she was willing to tweak it to suit her preferences. "Or a piece of prey, or I don't know, what do you want?"
OHOHOH, this strange cat was left alone with her. She was in trouble, now! Scorp would keep up, if not outdo the she-cats enthusiasm. "I'll bet you three shiny rocks and a feather!" She'd trill back, before her amber gaze settled on the fight again. Her gaze was drawn towards the blood, her tail tip twitching and an eerie ringing in the back of her mind taking over. For a moment, Scorp was so hyper-fixated on the blood, she forgot Fishpaw was there.
The jaws snapping and sounds of claws on fur and flesh were making her heart pound. She was getting antsy. She didn't even notice when her claws began to tear up the ground beneath her. Only when Fishpaw would speak again, would she'd snap out of this trance she found herself in. She'd seen the first challenge in her younger moons, but this fighting stuff seemed more enticing now... it seemed like battle was calling her name. She wanted to partake in something like this... she wondered what it felt like.
The Dancing Bird
Owlthroat couldn’t help but chuckle as Rookfire spat out a tooth, the cat had grit. Next came Rookfire’s lunge, Owlthroat’s paw swept out fiercely determined to make contact to slow his roll. Rookfire pushed off this, not without damage, claws and biting into his back, teeth biting into his neck.
Owlthroat whirled then reared upwards ignoring the all to familiar sting and ooze of blood. Thrashing until Rookfire became unseated in his hold and Owlthroat freed himself, leaping backwards. The glint in his eyes ever present, vibrant blood slicked hues of gold.
The space was back between the two, both heaving and panting from exertion. This fight was over, both drawing it to a natural pause and resultant conclusion. The two rather evenly matched as the blood trickled down his neck. Anymore and it would end with both continuing at eachothers throats till true, dangerous blood burst forth. The enforcer gave a respectful nod and lowered his haunches to the ground, face still twisted with adrenaline and pain, tongue swollen.
”yOu FfigHt weLL for A foRMerr FisHHy.” His smile this time was a genuine one, his words almost comical as he attempted reasonable speech through the swelling from where he had clamped down previously.
He held no ego over the fight, just simple exhilaration of a match between equals. His views had changed on Rookfire, the cat could fight and that was good enough proof for him. Good enough to earn something akin to a secret admiration.
Once more his now stiff legs rose underneath him, and he moved forward. In surprising fashion, attempting to touch his nose to Rookfire’s own.
Though, not many cats seemed to look up, so they might not even see her in the cedar tree hanging over them. But, there was Mistlewhisker, with Hawkbite right next to her. Birdecho smirked at the gaggle of kittens surrounding the Enforcer Commander, tail twitching on the bough.
good dad, look at that, what's that like? he's so great, yes good for him, stupid though, very stupid yes very dumb all of them
Words circled in Birdecho's head, catching tangled roots with dark talons and tugging Birdecho's attention this way and that. Her nose twitched, and she batted the thoughts away with her ears. Birdecho sniffed, gaze growing absent as she lost interest in watching Hawkbite drown in kittens.
Focusing on the two battling warriors, Birdecho began to put the pieces together. An Enforcer challenge, no doubt. Rookfire going for Owlthroat's position. The young warrior canted her head, unblinking eyes scrutinizing her former? friend and his opponent. She knew very little about Owlthroat, so she didn't particularly care about him. Win or lose, all the same to her. Rookfire, however... Birdecho let her chin fall onto her white paws. He'd been as close with Mossfreckle as she, and it seemed he took the tom's sudden choice of demotion and sudden disappearance hard, though Birdecho could hardly blame him. If she had been given a position of power and had it ripped away from her with no answers given, she would also crash out! Birdecho hadn't seen Rookfire around at all--she hadn't really been looking--but if this was what he wanted, good for him.
Amber eyes caught a glint from the medicine den, and a smile stretched across Birdecho's face. She slipped down the tree, her small body barely making a disturbance in the mud when she landed. Shouts brought flashes of light to Birdecho's peripheral vision, making her journey to the medicine den a little wobbly as she tried to avoid being blinded by her own head.
Birdecho stopped just outside the den entrance, dipping down and peeking into the darkness. "Hey sis! Enjoying the show? Who ya bettin' on?"
Her claws gripped the ground beneath her paws, her head tilting along with the fight - left, right, and left again - any person watching might think she was feeling dizzy, her movements droopy and fluid, but truly the young medic was merely following the fight through whatever gaps she could find, and through whatever monsters didn't obscure her vision. Her eyes glinted beneath the sunlight, an evident sign of something. She thought this was ridiculous, frankly, she would have expected one or the other to have finished this fight long ago, but they were drawing it out. She had to commend them for not having torn each other apart just yet -- was that a tooth? Yuck. She watched as Owlthroat reared up his back legs and hit Rookfire straight in the jaw, whom in turn made a show of spitting out what seemed to be a tooth or mere saliva. Sleepysunrise shivered on the spot, interrupted only by the sudden appearance of her sister. Her gaze whipped around and her body flinched at the sudden sound of her voice, which quickly melted back to her previous stance. She waved her tail, allowing the apparition to seat itself at her side.
She couldn't help but hold back a laugh at her question, eyes narrowed on the cracks that allowed her to see the fight. Sleepysunrise was quiet for a long while, expression and reason undetected lest one could glimpse inside her mind; when she did speak, it was with a drawn out, lilting tone.
"Neither."
She wasn't fool enough to be betting, that was an occupation for overgrown toads.
"Owlthroat is afraid of losing. He's a big scaredy-cat. And Rookbird won't stop until all his blood coats this clearing. They can do better than this."
They could both kill each other, in other words; her gaze flitted to her sister, a dark look briefly clouding her gaze, gone as fast as it came. Owlthroat didn't have the guts to kill, she knew that much, by that logic Rookfire would win the fight if he would actually try. But the Owlman was also older, she could imagine that someone who so dearly held on to his pelt knew how to survive a few fights.
What a bother, what a dilemma. Her lips pressed together and angled in a frown, her eyes following a small group heading towards her den. She eyed them with suspicion, the feline growing scarily silent - even for her in this specific moment - eyes narrowed on the group. They had no business going to her den, she told herself, they were going to steal, her paranoia repeated, they were going to kill, you will be nothing, your grandmother will hate you; her head twitched sideways in a brisk movement, ear flicking as if casting some dirt aside as the haunting thoughts swirled around her mind.
"No."
She uttered, biting the inside of her cheek. A bad feeling formed in the pit of her stomach despite reasoning that Mudslide was one of Miss Grandmama's enforcers, and therefore couldn't commit such a heinous crime as betrayal. All the same they were heading to her den, and that meant she was needed. She would find out whether the enforcer and her companions could be trusted soon enough, she supposed. Her gaze didn't leave the den's entrance, Birdecho within her peripheral vision.
"Tell me who won later?"
She spoke as she got up - her eyes briefly flickered towards her sister - before she had to duck inside the medicine cat's den after the needy group.
OWLTHROAT VS ROOKFIRE
The battle has concluded!
It was a close tie.
The clan has the right to speak their opinions on the outcome
but know it might not change Dawnstar's mind.
Enforcers, this is where Hawkbite expects you to chip in.
Owlthroat's gesture was a hint Hawkbite took. The Commander quickly moved forward, leaving the group that surrounded him behind to stand before Rookfire and the Enforcer. "NO MORE!" His voice rose above the crowd's his gaze flittering between the two before they'd turn to Dawnstar. Hawkbite noticed when she arrived to the crowd.
"Before Owlthroat's apparent halt on the fight, it was a pretty much a tie between the two of you. I expect that considering you were both fighting for something that matters to you, but it's up to Dawnstar to decide what happens next," he spoke, before addressing the crowd as a whole. "Nows your chance to speak up or forever hold your peace."
This was when the opinions from the clan mattered... but especially those of the Enforcers. Hawkbite's obvious distaste for Rookfire -- a long standing one -- would make him biased. Sure, Rookfire had warmed up to him some, but Hawkbite was a religious cat; the omen had left his trust shaken, though not shattered.
The fight had been mindblowing to watch, Bleedingpaw lasping into silence to watch, gasping and wincing with the blows. He needed to internalize all of this, try and see if he could use these moves himself to reach even a fraction of the skill displayed. He'd be satisfied with that, more then even.
Eventually though it was called, just in time it seemed, and Bleedingpaw was holding himself tense and still, pupils slit to hear the result. A tie, Dawnstars call but Hawkbite had asked for input... Well it was obvious wasnt it?
"They should both be enforcers! Theyre both very skilled and driven to achieve the rank! Neither of them failed today! Why settle for less when Shadowclan can have two greats rather then one who won nothing today?
Both cats either lost or won and both have proven their worth. Both Rookfire and Owlthroat should be enforcers and to say otherwise is biased against the facts."
"Another test!" Shadowpaw called out from the spot she was at. She wanted those shiny rock and also it seemed to be others were in some kind of toss up on how this should be done so she was just throwing her two stone into this conversation. Plus she was curious to what would be concocted up for another test.
"If you must have one lose the position and they both ended up in a tie there should be some kind of other test done. As others have said that there is more to being an enforcer than just winning fights... Or you could just go with picking both of them, it would void the bet I made hehe~" Shadowpaw said in a serious tone till she brought up her little bet. Whatever choice was made the apprentice didn't really care, she was just playing devils advocate here. Though she was in between what would really happen here. She could see Dawnstar taking Rookfire as an enforcer with Owlthroat since there was a tie, ooor swapping Owlthroat out for Rookfire since Owl had been in their position much longer yet still ended in a tie. This clan was all about might is right after all.
Tuftedtusk stood walking towards his mate and Hawkbite. Rubbing his mates cheek with his own he would stand and face the Enforcers, Dawnstar and Hawkbite as well as the clan assembled.
"My vote is for Owlthroat." He rumbled with a sweep of his thick tail behind him.
With a slow purr, he would look his mate in the eye. "Well done, love." He murmured so only his mate could hear him.
It was one of the closer challenges she'd seen, and this pleased her greatly. Knowing that there were warriors like these in the clan had the Deputy sitting a little straighter in pride. That being said, they had to choose a winner. Mistlewhisker canted her head as a few cats voiced their opinions, most hoping for a compromise solution. Mistlewhisker liked the idea of having both Rookfire and Owlthroat as Enforcers--they both deserved it, in her eyes--but that would set a precedent that would be unsustainable to maintain. They couldn't just add another Enforcer position every time both fighters were qualified. Mistlewhisker thought about the list of current Enforcers. Hawkbite, Tuftedtusk, Briarsplash, Mudslide, Newtbelly, and Owlthroat. Though it was yet to be seen whether he would maintain that spot. Mistlewhisker would say nothing until most of the gathered had voiced their opinions. She did not want for her own voice to impact the choices of others hoping to seek her approval.
ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan warrior | mid 20s ]
[ “the eclipse” ]
rookfire let himself be shaken off, teeth dislodging in time to bring distance between the enforcer and himself. tail whipping and tattered ear pulled back, he remained in a stance ready to react when owlthroat lowered his haunches.
confusion passed over the lithe warriors features, eyes averting from owlthroat to glance at hawkbite. the commander hadnt called off the challenge yet and rookfire was hesitant to let his guard down without his superiors permission. last time, the challenger and enforcer had fought until hawkbite stopped them. in his mind, the battle wasnt over until a high rank or the commander declared it to be.
even as owlthroat offered a humorous remark, the former medicine cat only spared a single glance before returning his attention to the audience. ear carefully angled towards owlthroat to catch any sound of him moving again. perhaps this was some weird technique intended to catch him off guard?
hawkbite moved between them and rookfire sat immediately. claws retracting back into their sheaths, the tension melting from his shoulders. when owlthroat moved to touch his nose to rookfires own, he accepted the gesture openly. rising to his paws once more, the former medicine cat eyed the wounds he had left, striped tail curling around owlthroat momentarily before he pulled away with a nod.
"good fight" he commented with a slow smile, extending a forepaw to tap owlthroats uninjured shoulder in a friendly manner before taking his place next to the older warrior to await dawnstars judgement.
there was no distain between the two toms and now that the noise of the crowd was back on his radar, rookfire addressed flytail calmly.
"not lost, chipped" he corrected before baring his teeth in show of the very much still existent fang he had chipped. eyes moving to bleedingpaw as the young tom called out, he couldnt help but feel some sort of warmth fill his chest. simply knowing there was at least a single cat in the crowd that got his back was enough.
rookfire gave bleedingpaw a brief smile before his expression shifted back into careful neutrality.
rookfire eyed tuftedtusk, his original choice for the challenge, with guarded distain as the enforcer stepped into their space. now was not the time to be all soppy with his mate, especially not if that meant stepping into the area reserved for the challenge. his overstepping of unsaid boundaries came to no surprise to the former enforcer though, tuftedtusk was hardly cut out for the position and he had told hawkbite as much when the challenge was originally proposed.
Newtbelly he/him | 22 moons
Agatha Kitty, Shadow Fiend, Killer Aptitude T1
Respect. That was what he held for Owlthroat. Always had, of course, but seeing him fight, watching every decision - watching the blood spray from his mouth, it only deepened. It was nice to know he hadn't gone soft. The appearance of a mate and kits had left him a tiny bit worried. He couldn't say the same for the younger warrior. Claws still dug deep into the ground as he sat and observed, though his anger was gradually dying down to a tolerable level.
Ha. A nose touch? That showed the maturity difference between himself and Owlthroat, he supposed. Newtbelly knew if that was him he would've simply fled into the territory. The myriad of faces, of judgement, he couldn't face it. But, then again, Owlthroat could stand his own ground. The same couldn't be said for himself. Was he strong? Sure. Experienced? No. Ugh. Enough about him. His tail batted the ground in irritation as he dwelled on his insecurities. How he would've loved to see that tom torn to shreds. Alas, he knew it was immature. He must have a reason for challenging Owlthroat. Something had to have happened. Something to do with that scratch across his nose. Anything.
Now came the time to speak. He couldn't say nothing. But he couldn't display too much of this emotion, lest he embarrass himself (and everyone else). Flytail was... Well, Flytail was being very Flytail. It looked like a clear draw to Newtbelly - though he wished it hadn't been. Tuftedtusk made his opinion known, of course. Despite how much Newtbelly hated all that sappy stuff, he had to admit the two enforcers looked pretty cool together. Perhaps the point of having a mate was not to 'look cool' together, but that's the only appeal Newtbelly could see in it. He was glad Owlthroat hadn't gone for some shrimpy loser cat.
Anyway. Yes, his opinion. He still disliked having too much attention when speaking (when he was showing off, well, that was a different story). But this was important. "Owlthroat," he began through gritted teeth, though any upset in his tone was muted. When he continued to talk, his jaw unclenched, teeth no longer gritted as a result of him trying his hardest to hide any feelings of anger. "Is constantly proving himself worthy. There is no need to demote a perfectly good enforcer." An eye darted to Rookfire as he said that. He supposed that had happened to him, hadn't it? Omen or no omen, he was also a perfectly good enforcer, just unfortunate with this whole medicine cat thing. It reminded Newtbelly just how much he wanted to stay away from herbs and medicine - he'd already shown Sleepysunrise his incompetency in that area - and definitely far far away from that wishy washy Starclan stuff. Irrelevent, though. He couldn't stand to work with him after this. Despite how unbothered Owlthroat seemed, Newtbelly couldn't bring himself to respect anyone who challenged a more seasoned warrior. It had been the same with Foggymask, though it was exemplified when the warrior in question was Owlthroat. Perhaps he'd get over it with time. But that didn't feel likely at the moment.
The urge to jump in and swap his own rank for the older tom's was strong. But he doubted Hawkbite would allow something like that. And what would Owlthroat think of him for stepping down, for devaluing himself? If Owlthroat wasn't proud of him, who the hell was there?
~ BRIARSPLASH ~
stocky, large, & fluffy dilute gray tortie she-cat with goldish-green eyes; just a scratch | killer aptitude t1
[ shadowclan enforcer | she-cat | 32 moons | abrasive, standoffish, loyal ]
~
That... had been a sight.
Even more vicious than Briarsplash had anticipated—and full of all the thrills she would've expected from two gritty warriors—the Enforcer had been rather stunned into silence or the occasional grunt of acknowledgement as she'd watched claws shred and teeth pierce. The matchings scores down the flanks and the mule kick to the jaw had made her wince in secondpaw pain for Rookfire, but her respect for the former medic had increased when she'd seen him recover from that. Overall... a good, respectable fight. And almost as exciting to watch as her own first battle. It was refreshing to see not one cat completely dominating the other, as well as no dirty moves.
It was at the end that she was surprised to see both still standing, and even offering gestures of camaraderie. Her perception of Owlthroat had always been a little more aloof than that, so it was interesting to see he and Rookfire—both able to be cold and calculating in their own ways—reach a point of touching noses and bumping shoulders. She supposed that's what you'd get when you earned proper respect from a fellow warrior; and in ShadowClan, most often that respect was found on the battlefield.
Her mind was spinning with a few things, as usual; though Briarsplash was a cat of relatively fewer words (she didn't like hearing her voice all that much), her brain was an opposite on the subject. And here, the mess continued.
Now the battle was a draw, and that left the skills they'd displayed here speaking for them — but it did not answer the question: who wins?
Owlthroat. On the one paw, a formidable and reliable warrior; perhaps a bit brash and overly confident, as per his incident with his former 'paw (and who was she to talk?), but certainly not someone she'd want to lose among their Enforcer ranks. He had watched her back during the rat and snake extermination event, and had helped run some events with her to train the apprentices. He cared about the wellbeing of his Clan, and was a talented, ruthless cat in battle. A valuable ally, and someone whom she'd be glad to follow alongside in battle any day.
Rookfire. Much more complicated, but he had pointers. Even as a former fish, the warrior had quickly risen up the ranks of their Clan as both Enforcer and medicine cat. He'd done just fine as an Enforcer, and had been a skilled enough medic, although his time had been awfully short there. Still, Rookfire had been quiet and reliable, usually minding his own business and getting done what needed to be. Briarsplash appreciated that. Besides, he'd helped her run some events as well to help the Clan, and... had saved her life following that extermination event. She'd been bleeding out from a particularly nasty wound, and his quick-thinking had stabilized her. He'd even brought her a squirrel from the fresh-kill pile while she'd been recovering... which he hadn't had to, just as a kind gesture. It'd surprised her.
The whole demotion thing still confused and annoyed her (she hadn't seen much use in it despite the omen), so Briarsplash leaned towards the fact that the ex-medic had gotten the short end of the stick. Still... what did all that mean for now? Were Rookfire's dutiful attempts to be on good behavior and faithfully serve his Clan enough to get him reinstated?
Hawkbite, Mistlewhisker, and Dawnstar were no doubt looking to their Enforcers for some opinions. So now, it was her turn. Hesitating, the fluffy she-cat finally cleared her throat, adding her voice to the mix.
"They both showed their resolve here," Briarsplash began, her voice a raspy yet soft huff. She tried to pretend that she couldn't feel sets of eyes boring into her pelt, namely three of them whose opinion she cared about the most. "Owlthroat's been a good 'n strong Enforcer, 'n like Newtbelly said, I don't see much good in demoting him for the incident. He's served us well, 'n that fight's showed us how good of a fighter he is." A leader among them for that, honestly; now she wanted to get some battle tips from the tom.
Her gaze briefly flicked towards Rookfire. Not many cats spoke up in his favor, and it would feel... strange, to be among the first. But she owed it to him for what he'd done both for her and the dedication he'd shown to ShadowClan, both before and after the demotion.
"On the other paw... Rookfire's been a heck of an asset to us, all things considered. He's proved his loyalty—and his skill, not just here—quite a few times now. As much as I think Owlthroat shouldn't lose his rank, I also feel like this one's more than earned it back, from what I've seen of him lately. He works hard."
Stars, she barely ever spoke this much. But her opinion was far more complex than she would've liked, and she didn't want to be misconstrued. Briarsplash let out a huff of a sigh, glancing at the Commander, the deputy, and the leader. "I ain't one for being indecisive, but the battle here spoke for itself and for me: a draw. I'd be proud to fight alongside either of 'em as a fellow Enforcer any day." Hard words to earn from the gruff she-cat, but she meant them.
She sagged her shoulders again once she spoke her piece, ears flattened. The Enforcer, like she said, was not a fan of qualifying. But she couldn't feel honest to speak in favor of both and not give kudos where it was due; to her, they'd both earned the rank, though she knew it probably wouldn't end that pretty. So she'd leave it at that.
burntToast | seeingstars | sturgeonwind | SuspiciousMindz | Rani | Estelle -> I will stop mentioning sus + Rani, just wanted to show Mush's reaction to them ( even if she was more focused on other things )
The sheer fright that flooded her very being had Mushroomkit freezing up, staring with terrified wide eyes as Pinekit approached her. She had only wanted to know what was happening, she didn't want to be hurt again. The russet feline couldn't even bring herself to get away like she needed to otherwise Pinekit was going to hurt her again! Why couldn't he just leave her alone! She just wanted to be left alone but Pinekit was always hunting her down and tracking her around camp no matter where she was. She zoned out any words that were said until suddenly Adderpaw was there.
She sniffled, and managed to stumble to the apprentice's side, hiding behind her so that Pinekit wouldn't be able to see her. Mushroomkit was happy that Dovekit was napping in the nursery, the last thing she wanted was for Dovekit to hear Pinekit's words about her over and over and over again. It seems though, that Pinekit has managed to get Adderpaw and her in trouble as well, based on Bleedingpaw's words. She didn't mean to be scared, she was supposed to be a Shadowclan cat, but she couldn't help it. Mushroomkit hated feeling like she was prey in her own home but that's all she was in Pinekit's eyes. Someone to hurt, and for what? What did Mushroomkit do to Pinekit? Offer a place in her family? Offer to play a game? Existed?
The forever queen called them over, Mushroomkit managed to tear her eyes off the dark pelt of her friend to glance in the queen's direction and she managed to give a little nod. She wouldn't move until Adderpaw did though, her mind screamed to not leave Adderpaw's side while Pinekit was right there. Adderpaw would protect her, and would understand, and was kind. The russet feline brushed against Adderpaw's fur with her head, purring anxiously in attempt to calm and comfort herself.
He looked first disgusted at the reply about family. Treating it better. Whatever Hawkbite meant they were really really silly because, "Family?! Pffft. I could never be family with THAT stupid mouse. You can like the sound of mice all you want but I'm going to ignore all of your stupid squeaking. Mouse is a dumb name like calling your kit Brokenkit, Mushroomkit or Ratkit because all of those names are stupid ones. The second one wouldn't be as bad if you didn't have to share a name with..." he looked pointedly at Mushroomkit, "that one."
He then just like realised there were a lot of cats here and um um they were all going to complain at him so he had to apologise, smiley face, it would all be fineeeeeeeeee..... yeah no.
"Sorry for telling the truth that she's crazy!" Pinekit said cheerily, smiling, "If she wasn't, we wouldn't he here now would we? She's such a liar. Keeps blaming me for her hurting my paw and then when I pushed her into some thorns she said I scratched her. But I'd never do that!"
Pinekit could swear he was actually going to be obliterated by someone within the next few seconds.
Night someone someone said he could go sit with her! What a nice way to get out of the situation and manage your anger, Pinekit! (If only this happened a lot in real real life where there were more problems for sturgeon to deal with and needed some escape like this) Apparently there was another kit called Snakekit you could tell them how stupid Mushroomkit was!! And be less annoyed! ...No?
Pinekit said no?
Pinekit does not want this opportunity...
Great job, problem causer. Let's lose you your apprentice ceremony.
(powerplay perms for anyone to hit him backwards/barrel him out of the way for some reason, and yes I know warriors can pick up kits w/o perms so do that if you want)
Adderpaw stepped out of the way the moment the head enforcer began to address pinekit, Hawkbite seemed quite upset at the insult used more than he was about there being an insult at all. She supposed the name ‘mouse’ meant something to him. Then he went on refer to pinekit as if he were family with mushroomkit which Adderpaw knew was incorrect– or at least she believed it to be. Mushroomkit only had her mother and her sister Dovekit. Pinekit and Mushroom weren't related? However the point still stood, no one should treat any cat like this. She was vaguely aware of the fact that Mushroomkit had taken to hiding behind her as if she believed Adderpaw was able to protect. Adderpaw wanted to feel flattered by her friend's trust in her but she only felt a deep seated disappointment for mushroomkits trust had been put into incapable paws. The younger kit was innocently unaware at how incapable Adderpaw really was at everything. Hawkbite had told them to go sit with someone named lionpaw and turned to speak to someone else and suddenly Adderpaw was reminded of how crowded it was here. Was the temperature dropping or was it just her? Bleedingpaw was suddenly talking to them in a tone that was all too similar to the one Queen’s used when scolding kits for misbehaving. Mushroomkit didn't deserve that kind of treatment! All she had done was ask the enforcer a question, she did deserve to be disrespected! She didn't get why bleedingpaw was talking to her like she was a kit- had she also done somthing wrong? She knew her words didn't sound right!! This is because she had repeated them enough times in her head or groomed her fur enough times! She wouldn't make the same mistake again. Adderpaw’s gaze immediately dropped towards her paws for she knew if she made eye contact she would see the hatred in bleedingpaw’s eyes. The older apprentice told them to go to Nightshiver. To lionpaw or Nightshiver!? Which one? Adderpaw would ask but the words died before they even reached her throat. Maybe she shouldn't have gotten out her nest this morning, she hadn't groomed her fur enough times- she need a new hill to sit on, the birds didn't sing quite as early as they usually did, she hadn’t repeated the words enough, she forgot to say sorry last night, count to three, she needed to breath, paws to heavy, it's getting colder–
The sudden contact of some brushing against the braided tabby's fur pulled her from getting lost in her spiralling thoughts. Her surroundings focused again and mushroomkit’s presence grounded her once more. The russet shekit seemed to unintentionally have that effect on Adderpaw, and the apprentice appreciated it more than she would ever be able to truly express. Just when Adderpaw had calmed down Pinekit piped up again. How dumb could a cat be, surely he must know that talking to an enforcer- HEAD enforcer like that was beyond dangerous and idiotic. The words pinekit said only fueled Adderpaw's forming hate for the kit. Adderpaw had had enough of him and his words and she was sure mushroomkit didn't want to hang around here any longer. Not staying long enough to hear the rest, Adderpaw turned to mushroomkit and nudged in the direction of Nightshiver. It was a silent indication that they were leaving. When words failed she hoped actions would speak louder, and with that she approached the queen making sure mushroomkit was following. Ofcourse she didn't want to go sit with Nightshiver- she didn't want to sit with anyone but mushroomkit. However it might be best to just stick with an adult for mushroomkit's sake. She could practically feel the eyes of other burning into her pelt. Whether it was really or not, she felt it
~~~It took her a moment, but Mosstangle noticed the little kit shouting and huffing and puffing. She wasn't sure what he was on about, but he seemed to be getting on the nerves of plenty of other cats around him. She may be no mind reader, but she could read the room enough to recognize that he was really only getting more aggravated.

The large tabby padded over to quickly mediate the situation. "Sounds like someone needs a break." She said before taking the black and white kit by the scruff and pulling him away from the other poor cats he was bothering. She walked over to the nursery and sat in front of it, putting the kit down. "Be quiet and watch the fight, or go back into the nursery." She told him, not unkindly but certainly sternly, as she turned to continue watching the fight.

Nightshiver
[ 64 moons | She / Her | Shc Forever Queen | Kitty Softpaws T1 ]

She greeted both kit and apprentice with gentle smiles and a small, comforting touch to their head with her tail as they joined her side, ensuring that both Adderpaw and Mushroomkit were on one side of her, and Pinekit and Snakekit neatly seated on the other. However peace did not last for long, as Pinekit couldn't seem to behave and even another warrior quickly stepped in before Nightshiver could do so much as open her mouth. Her eyes followed Mosstangle, and she stood up to intercept the warrior.
"M-mosstangle! O-oh... oh, you scared me."
She laughed, a little nervous. Her eyes then lowered down to Pinekit, and she frowned, pondering what to do now.
"P-pinekit, honey... You're not... being ve-very nice..., so.. So, y-yes. Go to the..the nursery with.... Mosstangle. And don't l-let me.... let me hear you... bullying anyone... again, okay? You're... you're going... to get into... real trouble... otherwise."
She frowned a little, then lifted her gaze to meet Mosstangle's eyes. The forever queen gave him an apologetic smile, then nodded, letting both the warrior and kit be off.

Turning around to sit besides Snakekit, Adderpaw, and Mushroomkit again, the queen gave them all a soft look.
"S-sorry.. for... the wait. I h-hope.. you're... okay, love;"
She looked at Mushroomkit.
"If... if anyone.. ever... bothers you, o-or... your sister, you can... come to... to me.. okay? I'm al-always... around the... nursery to help."
She gaze looked between the three young ones, a smile coming onto her face.
"That goes... for a-all of.. you."
She would admit that Mushroomkit's vivid imagination is unlike anything she had seen before, but how harmful could an imaginary friend be if it stayed harmless? She would have to keep an eye on the young one, is all.

Her eyes soon lifted to see the fight drawing to a close, and commander speaking his words. She watched him with a small smile, eyes then drifting between both Rookfire and Owlthroat. Oh, she couldn't see why either of them had to lose in this fight! Perhaps it was her being sentimental, but she held both warriors dear to a degree, as both were stand-up and honourable clan mates in her eyes. As pious as she could be, the omen merely spoke of having been called back to the rank of a warrior - it held no ill will - so why shouldn't Rookfire be able to fulfil the omen by living up to his potential as a warrior and enforcer of the clan? He had worked hard for this position. As for Owlthroat, he had worked equally hard, and was doing such a fine job holding up his status all the while raising his little angels of children. Nightshiver was silent for a long time, but couldn't help but smile hearing Bleedingpaw and Briarsplash talk. She agreed with them, and in favour of not abandoning one or the other in this crowd filled with Owlthroat's family, perhaps just a small part of her could speak motherly stand-point for the boy who seemingly liked to be alone.

"I-I have... to agree... with Bleedingpaw a-and.. Briarsplash."
She gave each of them a little glance.
"Rook..Rookfire was a f-fine... enforcer... before his.. promotion, he could... be that... again. And..and he has... worked hard to... supply ShadowClan... with h-his skills and... loyalty over... the moons."
She gave him a warm smile, before her gaze drifted to Owlthroat.
"And...and Owlthroat... has been doing... such a fine... job as well, maintaining... his position... and..and helping... the clan stay... strong. It would.. b-be a... a waste to leave... either of... them out of... the en..enforcer... rank."
She felt a bit of warmth rush to her face, realising she had been speaking quite a few words out publicly now. She stuttered as she began to wrap up.
"I-I just... think... they both... deserve the..the position of.. enforcer."
Said and done, the queen thought, taking a deep breath to steady her beating her heart. Oh hopefully this would turn out in both their favour, she didn't want to see either of them lose when they had both worked so hard for this.

she had been watching, well, listening to the challenge. they both held their own, and as much as she disliked the former medic, she would be a fool to think he wasn't a capable enforcer during his time as one. she had her own piece of mind to give. "rookfire is a capable warrior, and a fairly good enforcer when he was one.
as much as i... dislike... him. he is an asset to shadowclan. we should give him a chance to be a bigger one." she still had no idea why rookfire was demoted in the first place.

she gave her mini rant, so she padded off.

Should I start making these battles to the death? The thought popped up in the dark tabby's mind as Hawkbite called an end to the fight. The leader's golden eyes roved over the bleeding cats analytically. She gave little away as she listened to the cats speak up; she ignored those with close ties to each challenger who were obviously picking with bias or had no real reasoning behind their choice. She had no interest in who was favored; she wanted the one who'd best serve ShadowClan and to hear her clanmates' thoughts on them.

A soft hiss leaves her maw as she hears the three, Briarsplash, Bleedingpaw, and Nightshiver, speak for both of them. If it were merely battle skill, Dawnstar would have settled on Owlthroat without much hesitation. Rookfire was no slouch, but he hadn't left as much of an impression on Dawnstar. Yet, if she were weighing work ethic, Rookfire won paws down. Or at least he had during his time as an Enforcer before his promotion and demotion. She had already weighed their contributions, tossed around their history, and determined she didn't trust one more than the other. Owlthroat had potential, and Rookfire had grit.

How bothersome. Even though she saw the merit in keeping both of them as Enforcers, Dawnstar had rules, and rules were meant to be followed. She already bent them, considering she had allowed Owlthroat to fight instead of Rookfire's original choice. However, the clan had seemed to enjoy it and she highly doubted the battle would have been half as entertaining if Tuftedtusk were in Owlthroat's place. He didn't have as much to prove as his mate.

They were both pretty neutral to her regarding their flaws and strengths, and neither one had done anything to earn her ire to the point of tipping the scale more to one side. Who to choose, who to choose? The leader blinked her eyes slowly, and that short sliver of peaceful darkness, a certain she-cat, popped into her mind.

"Mudslide," She called the she-cat name with a decisive lash of her tail.

Lybirds Lullaby [ACTIVE] Mind Reader [ACTIVE]

The Enforcer, just then exiting the medicine den, perked at the sound of her name. Ah. Right. Opinions. Mudslide was never one to flaut or give insight to her morals, and she never would be. In this case, her words would have to be forced out of her, but not if they weren't her's.

She'd done it before, that weird speaking thing. She'd never tried to do it intentionally, but she believed now would be a good opportunity if any. Mudslide figured if she just used others voices enough, they'd soon forget about her own. Maybe they wouldn't be able to distinguish her own thoughts from others. Nocat's memory was perfect, and only she truly knew herself.

As she walked up to where the cats were gathered, she considered Roachflare. Bugs voice always calmed her down, but Roachflare didn't like talking all that much either. She never liked to hear her tone in somcatelses maw, so she wouldn't do that to him either. Fishpaw however, maybe her. She was easy-going and confident enough, able to crack stupid jokes easily. Okay, it was decided then.

Large marbled ears twitched before she spoke, hoping that she wouldn't end up whispering as she often did [Lybirds Lullaby], "I'll be honest, I only saw so much of the fight. But, the blood is apparent." It felt very odd to carry the cadence of Fishpaw of all cats. "However, feel like Owlthroat's actions should be taken into account. He lost his temper and he took it out on his apprentice. That's not what I believe Enforcer behavior should be, nor who we keep in our ranks. I don't believe Rookfire to be an angel, but at least his anger isn't projected onto others in such a way, even if he has proven to be hot headed." From what she'd heard. In her opinion, Rookfire was a chatterbox with a gun.

Anyways, Mudslide simply didn't have any respect for cats like that. Somecat could be as annoyed as Mudslide often was, but that didn't give her the right to strike anycat with the intent of hurting them. Owlthroat was a tank, clearly, so anything considered simple in normal cases could be life threatening. Even if Mudslide didn't show it, she had a strong sense of justice for whoever might've been within the minority or their youth. You could thank her terrible upbringing for that, another thing she could curse her parents over.

"Though, both have been valuable. Owlthroat has proved his strength and devotion while Rookfire is proved he's willing to try again with undying confidence to get back into the ranks for the good of his clan. Despite being demoted, he didn't stay there and wallow. Well, maybe for a bit... For those reasons, I vouch for Rookfire." She didn't mention how he was a clan hopper. So what? Mudslide was an outsider with an odd history. She technically had both Riverclan and Windclan blood in her, but nocat criticized her for that. Then again, she never told them. While she herself would much rather be a background character, fate hated her, so oh frickin well.

"Done..." She whispered, curling her tail tight around her paws. Maybe she was in the minority here, which would only make things worse for herself, but oh well. Whoever was picked, she honestly didn't really care all that much. It didn't effect her. As long as she kept her head down and worked like she was supposed to, her opinion wouldn't matter to anycat else either.

➢ Yeah....the cats vouching for the traitor were getting on her nerve and honestly she didn't have many left. The Apprentice remains sitting and simply calls straight for...and only towards Hawkbite. Her attention only on him as he called for opinions. Their usual tone remaining in place while bits of venom peeked through the hollower parts.

"I vote the ranks remain the same. Rookfire doesn't do much now that he did before other than what? We have enough cats for the Enforcer rank. These are the Elite we're talking about here, not those who Starclan picks to be forced back into Warriors after a failed Medicine cat position. That omen....he doesn't need a place of power in my opinion, not yet at least, give it more time to settle. Owlthroat has been doing what he should, other than a few outrageous actions but I argue most of this clan has done worse, alas I digress. This was purely a battle of ego. Ranks shouldn't be earned or even lost unless one of them did something the other hasn't. I would be more open to having a better opinion of such a promotion and demotion if Rookfire had been doing things other than patrols and the basic Warrior duties."

She tried to keep her thoughts together, get her ideas in order before speaking had helped. Be fair, inside thoughts stay in.

Her head snaps to a different cat. Fishpaw. Hollowpaw's eyes scan the crowd to the direction of the noise, to Fishpaw. Her sister hadn't moved much if at all, last thing before this was her talking to Scorps about something Hollowpaw hadn't fully heard enough of to understand. A chill runs down her spine, it made them uneasy; it sounded like Fishpaw...but was it Fishpaw. There was no explaining her sudden discomfort but it just didn't feel right. The black and grey cat turns back to Hawkbite, their points still stood, even with the sudden Fishpaw interruption.

roachflares head poked out of the warriors den once the fighting quieted and the clearing fell back into relative silence. whereas the cheerful crowd had been a bit too much to handle for bug, on this particular day anyway, he was curious either way. especially when dawnstars massive body came into view, followed shortly by her calling for muds. the small tom scurried across the empty space seperating themselves from the crowd, took a deep breath, and slipped between the mismatched carpet of pelts. rounded ears pressed tightly against his skull, they found themselves wandering pretty much aimlessly, too short to see much of anything without standing on his hind legs. which he obviously would avoid at any cost.
bug had no business deciding anything regarding the enforcers or even his fellow warriors, almost hesitant to correct apprentices with warrior company at times, so most of what had been said before they resurfaced had fallen on deaf ears. ro0kfire and owlthroat were somewhere to his left, judging by the metallic scent hanging in the warm air and roach managed to follow his friends scent until they slipped out of the crowd once more.
tri colour pelt ruffled and almost standing on edge with static energy, roachflare avoided dawnstars gaze like their life depended on it and shuffled to press his side to mudslides.
one day he'd have to ask her about that voice replication thing again, thoughts already circling the ideal presence. free from the dryness that ran down their throat every time they spoke, and no longer inflating in shame. "okay?" they muttered into mudslides short fur before busying bugs maw by grooming her shoulder diligently.

The warrior listened to the others silently. As she had said to Lambthistle, she had little opinion who became or stayed an Enforcer. The goings on of the high ranks were of little interest to her. Yes, it was good to know who was above her in order to show proper deference, but the squabbles of those trying for the rank were boring. It wasn't apathy, well, not entirely. But Rookfire and Owlthroat were qualified for the position, and she wasn't close enough to either to be swayed to either's side. And the clan seemed about as split. Smokefern let out a quiet sigh, and shook her head.

Scorpionpaw almost felt distraught as the fight came to an end, the she-cat staring between the Commander, Owlthroat, and Rookfire. Her claws were still itching and when Fishpaw gave her a side-eye, she didn't even notice. Her Mama spoke up and the apprentice grew eager to hear her thoughts, but instead she called out for Mudslide and that was it. A large sigh escaped her, waiting for the Enforcer to speak next and thankfully, she replied rather quickly. She didn't have to wait very long for it.

But... it didn't sound like a warrior. It sounded like... Fishpaw? No.. it couldn't be Fishpaw. Her amber eyes looked up at the older apprentice, but her mouth wasn't moving. She trailed the voice to Mudslide who was speaking and her brows furrowed with confusion. Now, the real Fishpaw spoke up, defending herself and Scorp just stared at her with a weird expression before looking at her Mama for any kind of sign or reaction.

Was this normal activity??
Do cats really sound like each other?
WHAT WAS HAPPENING?!

"I dunno who the real Fishpaw is right now," she stared between Mudslide and Fishpaw. "Did anyone else find that odd? Is this normal? HOW'D YOU DO THAT?!" she nearly yelled at Mudslide, prying for answers before the scent of blood reminded her what was happening. It made her claws itch, again; they were tearing up the ground beneath her, again.

Looking at Rookfire with a small grin, "Anyways, I don't think Rookfire should stay a simple warrior. He should be given a shot, Mama. He fought well. I don't know what Hullo's talking about, but based on his actions right now, I think you should give him another shot. He's been the only warrior to help me train something of use," she commented, her gaze shifting to her Mama. Did her opinion matter right now? She wasn't sure, but she wasn't going to keep her trap shut.

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan warrior | mid 20s ]
[ “the eclipse” ]

rookfires dark tail tip tapped the ground calmly, a simple gesture to pass the time and keep his mind occupied. he had never been one for sitting still, not as a kit, apprentice or anything else, but limiting his movement to something as easily missed as the tip of his tail, conveniently blocked off by the rest of his body, was a compromise he was willing to make.
calculated calm was what he wanted the others to see. a mask so well practiced and reinforced over the past twenty moons of his life, most couldnt see through.

he wasnt a proud cat, he was a realist, he knew shadowclan would put him on the spot over and over again. one might call it fruitless labour but even if it was the last thing he did, rookfire would prove himself worthy over and over, no matter what it took.
it could be an endless cycle for all he cared, but with enough patience, his work would pay off. shadowclan was his ride or die, had been for almost an entire season cycle, more than half his life. he knew what he had to offer and could see through his clanmates bias.
all words spoken with confidence, hailing owlthroats win brushed past his ego like water rolling off a ducks back.
he was a realist.

newtbellys opinion hardly mattered anymore than yarrowkits did. neither tuftedtusk nor him were anything special, no better than the average warrior, certainly not cut out for the position of enforcer and well.. they were both cursed by one rotten trait. the inability to differentiate between fact and what their precious little hearts said was glaringly obvious in both of them.
rookfire was tempted to comment on it, or at least clarify that he had wanted to challenge them both instead of owlthroat but depending on the way this turned out, dawnstars and hawkbites decision to let him at owlthroat might work out in his favour after all.
the former medicine cat was almost too caught up in his thoughts to hear briarsplash and nightshiver speak up.

nothing in briarsplashs regular nonchalant appearance nor his own thoughts spitting venom at two unrightful enforcers couldve prepared him for the odd clenching in his chest at their openly voiced support. a low gust of panic shot through him momentarily, passing along his body unnoticed, spar the disrupted rhythm in the flick of his tail, before the warrior could catch himself. he had no lingering sickness, no poison ingested recently in preparation for the challenge, why in starclans name did his heart clench like the devil was breathing down his neck-
there was no time to linger on questions. silver eyes narrowed, rook shrugged his shoulders, sitting up a bit straighter and focussed on dawnstar and the last remaining enforcer to offer their opinion.

that was until a unfamiliar voice chirped up from somewhere in the audience and rookfires expression derailed from careful neutrality to baffled confusion.

who the hell even was that child?

briefly, the former medic wondered if he had somehow mixed up magpiecove and that black and white overgrown kit and threatened to cut out their tongue rather than magpiecoves. but no, that was ridiculous to even consider. rookfire remembered the cats he threatened, and especially magpiecove with her positive development (from what he had seen anyway) would stay on his mind for a while longer.
anyway, where was he? ah, blinking at the black and white apprentice as if that would make her rambling make any more sense. not to mention the fact that rookfire couldnt even place the apprentice apart from seeing them practically glued to hawkbites side like he was their lifeline. and now they were oh so confident about what he does and doesnt do? ridiculous.
their comment about 'ranks shouldnt be earned' went against quite literally all their society was built on, and, 'we have enough cats for the enforcer rank' was exactly what riverclan would resort to when faced with the choice between two skilled (or in their case mediocre) warriors and only one higher ranking position open. it was foolish. the easy way out.
easy wasnt always right. how could shadowclan metaphorically reach for the stars and foster an environment of greatness without a challenge to the present? realistically, by the apprentices logic, dawnstar had been wrong in demoting her last deputy since they had earned the position once, but oh! it appeared there was another issue with that train of thought! too bad, it sounded like the apprentice was contradicting herself.

rookfires sandpaper tongue flicked out to wet his lips, who declared you the judge of my engagement? perhaps you'd notice if you gathered your strength to leave hawkbites side for even a moment" mmh too rude, hawkbite had asked everyone for their input.
instead of speaking up, he replied with a tilt of his head only, remaining quiet and returning his gaze to dawnstar.

for a cat rookfire couldnt even put a name to, they sure seemed to have a lot of strong opinions about him. perhaps he should be flattered, it wasnt any day that a cat got so jealous they become obsessed with what they perceive as ones flaws. the situation was ridiculous and rook wasnt one to pass up on a good joke but in all seriousness, what else besides jealousy could be the reason for their apparent obsession? he had never talked to them, not once, and had been going about his time training apprentices and furthering his own experience, what the hell else was he supposed to do? unless mystery apprentice had some extra task hidden in their nest, rook was doing all he could.

on a more positive note, his favourite little rascal decided to voice her input as well, earning a soft smile from rookfire, genuinely appreciative of what she offered to the conversation. scorpionpaw was shaping up to be a good asset to shadowclan, even if she was only a pawful of moons into apprenticeship.

Owlthroat’s yellow gaze wandered idly as he listened to the back and forth of the clan, the sinking feeling settling on his chest that he might not walk away with his rank wholly intact. It was a strange feeling, his assurance fading and ebbing at the very edges of his being. His whole identity at the risk of being stripped from him like a mewling kit away from its mother.

But his face stood firm, a unyielding mask. Teeth gritted with the determination to take the deliberation that would inevitably come his way.

As the she-cat joined her, Dawnstar found that she seemed to be under some assumption about what she was called for. The leader blinked her eyes slowly as she began speaking, only it wasn't the broken-up speech she had spoken with in her den. The voice wasn't even her's, it was Fishpaw. If this was the first time she had heard, she might have been as confused as everyone else, but it was not.

The leader didn't comprehend how some cats could mimic voices so accurately, but it didn't matter much, as she didn't care to understand it. The same way she didn't care to understand why some cats were brought back from that dead and others weren't. It was simply something that could be done. It was a neat trick, but it simply had Dawnstar further troubled by the she-cat.

Dawnstar glanced at her daughter, who seemed to be among the only other cats who noticed that Mudslide had spoken in Fishpaw's voice. Dawnstar felt a little bad for throwing shade on Fishpaw, but even if Dawnstar hadn't been watching Mudslide, she would never have believed the apprentice would give such a complicated answer to who she favored. There was too much thought put into it. "About as normal as cats coming back to life. I wouldn't think too hard on it, I doubt you'll get an answer you'll like." She grunts to her daughter and then returns her attention to Mudslide.
SuspiciousMindz

Her words were interesting, playing off of Owlthroat's last misstep and temper. He had been punished for that, rightly so, and yet to act out again. Hollowpaw's words about Rookfire's demotion had the leader's whiskers twitching; she had her opinion about that, alongside Rookfire merely doing his usual duties to the clan. Yet she wouldn't waste her breath arguing one side or the other. The clan leader had already weighed their wrongdoings, even though Owlthroat's was technically minor compared to Rookfire's demotion from medicine cat, as Owlthroat actually did the deed and Rookfire had simply been accused and removed due to the leader's paranoia, Owlthroat was more in the wrong than Rookfire.

But she was getting completely off topic here. She'd be pondering all day if she jumped further down that rabbit hole. Worst comes to worst, she could tally those who made a decent argument and pick who was favored from there, but first, she needed to get this figured out. "Mudslide, do you want to be an Enforcer?"

It was not a question she's ever bothered asking any of her former or current Enforcers; they all made it very clear that they were quite happy and honored with the role. Mudslide had not. The she-cat has never been seen interested in standing out for as far as Dawnstar could recall. She was devoted and steadfast, sure, but she could say the same of Doeflame, Hilldstrider, and many others.

She was present, but nothing outstanding. A spare to say the least. She seemed to go out of her way to avoid attention. Dawnstar had thought it was maybe nervousness or uneasiness with how she acted after being called to her den, but the way she showed up and spoke in Fishpaw's voice, throwing a great deal of attention on the young apprentice, made Dawnstar believe that Mudslide didn't like the spotlight. The only reason Mudslide had made the rank was because Dawnstar had wanted more Enforcers and Mistlewhisker spoke on her behalf. Getting a clear answer on whether Mudslide wanted to be in the rank would help her determine what to do with Owlthroat and Rookfire.

Hawkbite's gaze shifted towards Hollowpaw when she spoke up. It was unreadable, although there was slight irritation building up internally. That was quickly diminished when he realized it might've been partially his fault for these thoughts. He had similar feelings about Rookfire for similar reasonings.

Next, he followed Fishpaw's voice... to see Mudslide. Had he not been exposed to this a couple times from other cats, he might've been shocked as well, but he wasn't. The real Fishpaw spoke up to defend herself and Hawkbite's whiskers would merely twitch to express his amusement about it. Although, it appeared Dawnstar wasn't asking Mudslide for her opinion.

The question that came from her maw surprised him. His tail tip twitched with interest, his gaze settling on Mudslide, who was cuddled up next to Roachflare. Surely, she wanted this position? That's why she accepted the role, wasn't it? That was why she was always on top of everything when something went wrong. Hawkbite eyed her curiously, waiting for her response. Dawnstar had really put her on the spot, hadn't she.

roachflares head poked out of the warriors den once the fighting quieted and the clearing fell back into relative silence. whereas the cheerful crowd had been a bit too much to handle for bug, on this particular day anyway, he was curious either way. especially when dawnstars massive body came into view, followed shortly by her calling for muds. the small tom scurried across the empty space seperating themselves from the crowd, took a deep breath, and slipped between the mismatched carpet of pelts. rounded ears pressed tightly against his skull, they found themselves wandering pretty much aimlessly, too short to see much of anything without standing on his hind legs. which he obviously would avoid at any cost.
bug had no business deciding anything regarding the enforcers or even his fellow warriors, almost hesitant to correct apprentices with warrior company at times, so most of what had been said before they resurfaced had fallen on deaf ears. ro0kfire and owlthroat were somewhere to his left, judging by the metallic scent hanging in the warm air and roach managed to follow his friends scent until they slipped out of the crowd once more.
tri colour pelt ruffled and almost standing on edge with static energy, roachflare avoided dawnstars gaze like their life depended on it and shuffled to press his side to mudslides.
one day he'd have to ask her about that voice replication thing again, thoughts already circling the ideal presence. free from the dryness that ran down their throat every time they spoke, and no longer inflating in shame. "okay?" they muttered into mudslides short fur before busying bugs maw by grooming her shoulder diligently.

(fair CW! this post contains mentions of nausea and anxiety, plus maybeee disassociation? please, read carefully!)

Marbled ears perked as Roachflare trotted out of the warriors den and made his way to her, two toned eyes looking up at her with a level of concern. Mudslide returned his gaze, but she didn't move. She was stiff, admittedly grateful for the support, but stiff. She gave him a nod, but even at his persistent grooming, she didn't relax, her icy eyes darting to her large paws which shuffled uncomfortably in mud.

Mudslide didn't appreciate how this whole event was turned on her, like she was some kind of show pony to be questioned in front of a crowd, to squeak and mumble to merely entertain. She'd came here to state an opinion, and even that was rare. If eyes weren't on her before, they certainly were now, burning holes into her pelt, watching, waiting, calculating, judging. Just one pair of eyes was enough to make her feel uncomfortable, but now she had to tense to keep herself from squirming.

In truth, she wasn't even sure why she was chosen for the elites. Mudslide fancied herself average, she wanted to be average. She figured her worth ethic made her stand out? The acknowledgement of doing anything human or humanizing would break the facade of being unbreakable, of being untouchable. Two things she wasn't, two things she didn't want others to know. She remembered she used to be expressive, she used to chirp and smile, sometimes run around camp just for pure fun. But it brought her too many acknowledging glances, too many chances for cats to figure her out and her weaknesses. Everything had been exploited before, she refused to let it happen again.

But now she was here. Questioned for her position. She only hadn't approached Dawnstar to be removed from the ranks because she'd talked herself out of it. No regular warrior would turn down the mere thought of being an Enforcer, and while Mudslide hated the heat of a spotlight, she was willing to fake it if she wouldn't be questioned for even denying the position.

But like many of her plans, they backfired. Terribly.

Mudslide wanted to throw up, truthfully. The world was swaying, her ears were buzzing, and there was this stutter in her eyes, a small glint of pure uncontrollable anxiety and discomfort. She wound her tail around her paws, mud carried along by wispy fur.

It wasn't even a hard question. In fact, she would've answered fine if she'd been somewhere thousands of eyes couldn't stare at her. She didn't want to be here. She didn't want to be anywhere. She just wanted to be alone. With a few exceptions of course, but that wasn't the point. Oh to disappear, she wished she could just melt into shadow and run away. She was only ever good at running it seemed.

Finally, the oriental lifted her head, her expression carrying the same mask it always held. "No." Mudslide whispered with a shake of her head. She poked at the mud beneath her with an unsheathed claw before she stood up, and excused herself to the warriors den, nearly forgetting to guide Roachflare with her tail as she hobbled. Maybe she didn't make it there, maybe she just stood at the camp exit. She honestly couldn't tell.

Mosstangle
Shadowclan warrior - 19 moons - Large dark brown-and-white tabby she-cat with green eyes.
(Purrks: N/A)
~~~So many cats pitching in their opinions of the enforcers. Who should be, who shouldn't be, what they had or hadn't done. Mudslide was particularly interesting as Dawnstar called on her. Mosstangle looked to her, whiskers twitching as she heard another voice exit the enforcer's mouth. The apprentice it came from seemed quite distraught by the use of her voice. What an interesting skill...
Oh. OH! Mosstangle glanced up at Dawnstar as she asked Mudslide if she wanted to be an enforcer. She remembered the stuttering, anxious, quiet she-cat from the leaders den. Despite her ability to fight and dedication to work... Mosstangle did have her own, personal doubts about such an anxious enforcer. It didn't give her the most confidence, but, she hadn't really seen Mudslide in action.
The implications of Dawnstar's question were there, though. Her ear twitched. Was the leader planning on keeping Owlthroat and Rookfire by just booting another cat? What was the point of challenging and fighting for the role if you could just get kicked out...
Mosstangle stared in shock at Mudslide. "No..." She had said. The tabby's tail twitched. Sure, she was not great all things considered... but how could anyone with enough pride for themselves say such a thing? She guessed not everyone was made for higher positions. The brown and white molly tried to put herself in Mudslide's position... She felt that, even if she hadn't wanted to be an enforcer, she would still demand to fight for her place.
Perhaps that was her pride talking.
Mosstangle looked between the bloodied Rookfire and Owlthroat, then Hawkbite, then Dawnstar. This was an interesting turn of events. What a strange chain of events. She supposed, now, that Rookfire would get his spot and Owlthroat would keep his. What was the point of the fight in the first place?
This was drawing on far longer than the Deputy would have liked. She listened to her clanmates, though none of them had much of interest to say. When Dawnstar called out Mudslide, Mistlewhisker glanced curiously at the molly. What would she say, indeed? Her answer was surprisingly long-winded and... higher pitched. Though Mistlewhisker was less surprised about her response and more surprised no one else knew about her talent.
Though, Mudslide was then questioned by Dawnstar as to whether she even wanted to be an Enforcer. Mistlewhisker's ear flicked, curious as to the question. Of course she wanted to be an Enforcer. If she didn't, she would have said something earlier.
"No."
The answer made Mistlewhisker cant her head. Mudslide did not even want to be an Enforcer. Mistlewhisker's gaze iced over, irritation prickling her spine. Mudslide was one of the most dedicated on the team--she handled most of the issues that sprung up around camp! Enforcers like Newtbelly and Tuftedtusk barely did anything beyond the patrols, and apparently they "wanted" to be there. The Deputy's tail flicked, the only indication of her indignation. Why was it always the reliable and stable that did not want power? Squirrelrise, Mudslide--two reliable mollies that avoided the spotlight. Fine, then. Mudslide deserved the rank more than Owlthroat or Rookfire, but it seemed they would be rewarded.
Beneath the frustration laid the bedrock of disappointment. Disappointment at the indecisiveness of her clanmates, disappointment at Mudslide for throwing away this opportunity, but also disappointment in herself for wasting her time.
Had Mistlewhisker been an ordinary warrior, she might've left then and there. But now, with so many eyes always on her, she remained steadfast by Hawkbite's side, stoic and silent. She wasn't sure why this irritated her so. Maybe she was hungry. When was the last time she ate?
In the crowd, Mistlewhisker's eye lit upon Rookfire. In it burned a message. You will have to do. Do not disappoint me.
She lifted her forepaw and swiped it over a tattered ear a few times. Had she heard right? Did Mudslide actually say no? Her head tilts as surprise blooms within her golden hues. Dawnstar hadn't been expecting a negative answer. She glanced at the deputy and commander, noticing that they seemed to have had the same thought as she. Dawnstar felt strangely disappointed and oddly slighted.
Perhaps it was because she liked to reassure herself that these cats would go the extra mile to become the best of the best, that she thought Mudslide would prove her wrong. That she did want to be among the Enforcers despite her discomfort. No, hadn't been a plausible or possible answer since who didn't want to be an Enforcer?
Why did she feel like she was the one who made a mistake? Her uncertainty never lasted long as it was fleeting, torn apart by her rage. This was the last time she ever bent the rules like this. She should have simply let Rookfire challenge Tutfedtusk like he initially requested, but just had to listen Hawkbite... she was blaming him for this. She shot an irritated glower at the commander, which at this point didn't mean anything since Dawnstar was always displeased by something or someone.
"So be it then, Owlthroat, you'll retrain your Enforcer rank, and Rookfire, you'll take over Mudslide's position," Dawnstar announced with a dissatisfied snarl. "This is the last time the rules will be bent like this. From here on out, the challenger will fight whomever they pick to challenge, and only one cat will earn the rank of Enforcer. Any opinions about picking both will be ignored regardless of the reasoning. This Challenge is over." Dawnstar rose to her paws and stretched out her legs.
"Owlthroat and Rookfire, that was an invigorating fight. I doubt the next challengers will be half as entertaining. Go see Sleepysunrise, you're both off your duties until you're healed up." She meowed to both cats dismissively.
Riiiiiiight there was some byplay between Dawnstar and Mudslider and the other enforcers that Bleedingpaw didnt quite understand but he was only an apprentice so it wasnt his issue. Though he was now on edge near Mudslide, but he was on edge around most everyone right now and so this was only an escalation of that. In the end the 'fitting' result had been reached, both Rookfire and Owlthroat were enforcers and the result made the tom purr, pulling himself to his wobbly paws and padding over to his friend.
"Congratulations Rookfire! Youve more then earned this though its a shame you had to earn some of those wounds to get there. That will scar, no doubt." A joke, shadowclan of all clans viewed even the most ugly of scars as handsome, a sign of strength and health against adversity. Though the wounds did look rather poor. "Here, lean on me we'll go to my sister together, maybe she'll even pass over some herbs for you to deal with the minor wounds yourself while she huffs disapprovingly over the large ones." Bleedingpaw for his poor balance made a good crutch given his wobbles made for stronger muscles then most and the simple addition of a cat next to him could solve the issue even if he put no weight on them. Win win. He'd probably head off after dropping Rookfire at the medicine cats den, not fond of the place and more helpful finding a cat or two to collect some chervil if it was there, but it'd be nice to help his friend there, if he could walk at all.
"Awh man I was hoping for more tests..." Shadowpaw said aloud but without any real intent on starting a conversation about it. She just wanted to see more of what these enforcers could do with her own eye. They all have their praises sung but rarely has she seen them herself. Oh well. With that out of the way she made her way over to the soon to be swarm of cats around Rookfire.
"Good job making me lose my bet on you!" She sneered and stuck out her tongue before giggling. "Just kidding I'm not that bent out of shape over a feather. Congratulations on becoming an enforcer! Hope your wounds heal up quick Mr. bigguy!" With that she took a step aside so she wasn't impeding any movements of anyone around. She wondered if she could get some tips and pointers from Mr. Bigguy down the line. She didn't want to become an enforcer but seeing how other people did things wasn't going to harm anyone...
Mudslide’s announcement seemed like a surprise, he hadn’t expected it coming with her being so newly announced. Let alone in the middle of the challenge he’d just faced, it seemed bizarre and his lips curled with the deliberation. But as he’d soon find out, this would work in his favour. Owlthroat’s shoulders seemed to drop with ease as Dawnstar made her final judgement.
He would keep his rank.
The world seemed to get a little softer. But Rookfire had not lost today either, Rookfire had earned a rank through Mudslide’s sheer indecisiveness. His mind couldn’t help but wonder if Mudslide hadn’t spoke up, would he still be standing tall and unabashed. He gave a swift decisive nod towards Dawnstar and said nothing more, sweeping the idle thoughts away from his brain.
A gentle smile crossing his lips in the direction of his family and his supporters, he’d fought today with the clan behind him and that wouldn’t be forgotten easily. He’d fought without ego and won, maybe he never needed it all along. Owlthroat wasn’t too sure but he knew his muscles and wounds were beginning to ache. The tom raised up his haunches once more, the healer’s den it was. Far too exhausted to even dread Sleepysunrise’s company for once.
Huh? Mudslide didn't... He deemed her a more capable enforcer than him, but whatever. He shrugged it off. Who could force her to do a job she didn't want to do? All that mattered to him was that Owlthroat had kept his rank. Rookfire rejoining the team was... Something he'd have to get used to. He'd never had any distaste toward the tom, only admiration, to be perfectly honest. But his choice to challenge Owlthroat changed that. Though, Dawnstar's words about bending the rules added a seed of doubt to his mind. Had Rookfire tried to challenge someone else? That would change things. Especially if that someone else was Newtbelly himself. Though, he couldn't imagine Hawkbite or Dawstar saving his hide and putting Owlthroat up to the challenge instead. After all, he was far more experienced. He supposed he'd never know. The only thing he still didn't understand, was the little bit of talk about 'what Owlthroat did'. Stars, was he always the last to know what was going on with this guy?! He sighed, holding his composure as he gave Owlthroat a firm nod of approval. Good fight. Glad it wasn't me. Not a word was said, but it was pretty evident in his eyes.
rookfire moved on from the apprentices disruption quickly, dawnstars words a whole lot more interesting than their stupidity and uncalled for advice. honestly, if he were in dawnstars or hawkbites position he wouldve gotten a lot angrier. i mean, they practically insulted the way they run this clan/rank?! anyhow, the fishpaw - mudslide incident wasnt something dawnstar lingered on either so rook was slowly growing impatient. he wanted an answer, not dawnstar questioning mudslide.
cool eyes narrowed at the leaders question however, interrogating mudslide on her position within the elites could only mean one thing; it was him or her. owlthroat had never been a cat rookfire expected to be replaced without second thought, tuftedtusk or newtbelly, sure, but not owlthroat. no matter his slip up and overall 'act first, think later' approach, he was still reliable. not something you'd like to let go off.
dawnstar somehow doubting mudslide over newtbelly or tuftedtusk was...odd to say the least, mudslide had proved her worth. she was quiet and did what she was told. so he was taken aback when dawnstar not only spoke of her in such a manner but she answered the question negatively as well.
his ear strained in her direction in order to catch the quiet vocalisation, only to watch her disappear without another comment. weird. but..admirable. oddly so. the usual cat would want to do the bare minimum and hold a elite position, they'd give a strong 'yes' no matter the way they truly felt about their work. mudslide was.. honest at the very least. not humble but afraid. hiding from any attention. always quiet, always working, head ducked and shoulders hunched.
mistlewhiskers stare burned on dark fur in the usual uncomfortable manner..who had decided to make one feel the stares of others even if they couldnt see the other?! when rookfire finally returned the eye contact, drawing his own gaze from where the gathered cats had watched mudslide flee to, he wasnt able to draw a conclusion from it beyond the fact that mistlewhisker was not satisfied with the outcome of all this.
the outcome being rookfire being reinstated as enforcer and owlthroat remaining. invisible weight lifted off his shoulders, the feeling of being back on the right track almost overwhelming enough to make him miss the rule change announced. it made sense, rookfire had never asked to challenge owlthroat.
newly ranked up once more, rookfire dipped his head, honoured at dawnstars positive feedback, before moving to stand. none of his wounds should require serious medical attention but who was he to go against his leaders orders for something as simple as this.
"thank you." the older tom smiled, running his sandpaper tongue along bleedingpaws shoulder a pawful of times before he shrugged and followed the apprentices line of sight.
"ive had worse" starting with the very obviously missing ear and scar crossing half his face, and ending with the dull ache his shoulder still gave off from time to time. "im alright, really, no worries" he waved off with a half laugh but ultimately indulged in leaning on bleedingpaw all the same.
[ Rani - bleeding ; Marigoldwhisper - mud mentioned ; Mica - minor mistle interaction | if i forgot anything, no i didnt ]
