Metaphors and Similies?

I wanted to know if it was alright to use metaphors and similies that contain words or phrases most cats wouldn't know about.

Such as calling a lake a "mirror", or a cat leaping from one stone to the next as "hopscotching". Would these be alright so long as I don't have them directly think or say these words aloud?
