An open patch of woodland. Small prey animals can be found throughout the nooks and crannies. Birds have claimed a home in the treetops of tall aspen trees. Overgrown and luscious herbs are common to find here.

With Silentleap and Goldenpaw already alerted and by his side, Snowybreeze dipped his head in silent greeting at both before twitching his tail, intent on getting their patrol done. He had seen the rampant need of herbs the fire and battles had caused. His own older brother had suffered much when the rogues had invaded the warren, and the lack of herbs at the time had no doubt ensured a harsher and less secure prognosis than if the medicine cats had been fully equipped to handle the situation. There had been no saving his vision, of that Snowybreeze was sure, but perhaps they could have eased his pain and infection better with more herbs in store. They would rectify that now. Ensure no one else would have to go without while they were in their own home.

Upon arrival at one of the newest locations claimed by WindClan in their quest to ensure territory to supplement them, their loss far too big for a mere new camp to do, the gentle giant was left speechless. Despite knowing of the place, he hadn't been here yet, and the stark difference to WindClan's usual moors and fields was impressive. Aspen trees growing admittedly sparsely to a cat of ThunderClan or ShadowClan origin, to Snowybreeze it made for a serene, almost foreign view. The smell of flowers and herbs flowed in mingled in the wind, letting any visitor know that despite the towering copse, this place was WindClan to its core. The breeze feeling welcoming and safe, Snowybreeze turned to his companions, a small, timid smile on his face.

"We should. Find. What Cowtuft wants. Here," he mewed softly, flicking a single ear as he headed forth, focused on finding the herbs requested by the black and white tom.

Silentleap looked out into the distance. There was a large plain of grass under his paws and all around him.
Was that a little too fancy?
Oh well.

"Yeah, you're right. We could possibly find what Cowtuft needs here. But, um,"
Silentleap paused for a second.

"What did Cowtuft need? I didn't see what he signed out."

Goldenpaw followed behind the two warriors, watching as the patch of woodland grew ever closer. This was where they were headed? Now, he didn't have anything against trees, but they always made him a little antsy. Too tall. These ones especially looked like they could fall over with just a strong gust of wind.

As Snowybreeze spoke, Goldenpaw glanced over, glad to have a distraction from his tree thoughts. What Cowtuft wanted? Goldenpaw squinted out at the unfamiliar territory. Well, he probably wanted herbs... like, flowers? Or, uh. Actually, he didn't know much of anything about herbs. Was there something specific Cowtuft had in mind?

He was about to ask as much when Silentleap spoke up. Though he wouldn't admit it, he was somewhat grateful he didn't have to say anything—speaking wasn't his favorite thing nowadays, since every word felt like it was scratching his throat. Like there was an itch deep inside him that he just couldn't reach.

Confusion forced the massive tom's brow to crease as he openly stared at the other two in silence for a moment. Had... had he not just said what they were to find? Yes, while they were walking here. Snowybreeze was certain he'd said it. He'd most certainly thought it! Surely he... forgot that words had to come out of his mouth for others to hear them. Right... No yeah. That... that was on him.

A creeping heat rushed all the way to Snowybreeze's ears as he attempted to shake away his embarrassment. StarClan help him. Perhaps one day he'd be able to lead a patrol without making a complete fool of himself. No... that didn't sound right. The young warrior liked to think that he kept positive thoughts all around, but him not messing up was far too idealistic even for him. One giant paw flying to his ear as he passed it swiftly across, covering his face bashfully for a moment, the patched tom dipped his head apologetically. He had just rudely assumed his patrolmates where mind readers of all things. Hopefully they wouldn't be too angry with him.

"A-ah. Y-yes. Apo-apologies. Cowtuft. He needed. Burnet. Leaves. Are basal. May have. Spiky. Purple flowers. And. Dandelions. Golden. Fluffy flowers," he stammered, his dialect becoming more clipped than usual as nerves fluttered about his stomach. Giving a small tilt of his head in silent query, he awaited to see if there were any doubts - he certainly hoped not, as that was all the medicine cat had told him - before returning to the task at paw.

Silentleap looked to his right. Dandelion!
He trotted towards the yellow fluffy flower.

"Found Dandelion! There's a huge patch here!"
He started to pick off some of the yellow flowers.

Goldenpaw bit back a smile at Snowybreeze's reaction. Had he just forgotten to tell them the reason they were out here? He glanced away as the larger tom spoke, sweeping his gaze over the plants in the area. Burnet and dandelion, huh? He didn't know what basal meant, but it was probably fine. Not like he was about to ask for clarification or anything.

The golden-furred apprentice knew little about plants, nor was he particularly interested in them, but at least he knew what dandelions looked like! He remembered picking some back when they needed decorations for Juniper's Rest. Actually—his tail flicked to and fro as he thought—what had happened to that place? Had it been consumed by the fire, like the rest of their territory? He frowned at the dandelions by Silentleap for a moment before padding up to nip off the stem of one of them.

A dot of color caught his eye and he looked up, spotting a little patch of herbs nearby. Dandelion in tow, he trotted up to the plants and leaned down to examine them. Hmm... these flowers were more of a bluish color than purple. But the leaves looked basal-y enough... maybe? Goldenpaw gave it an experimental sniff, nose scrunching at the fresh scent. Smelled like a flower, yup. And it was kind of spiky? Now, Goldenpaw didn't know enough about herbs to know what borage was (this was it), but he also didn't know enough about burnet to know the difference.

He didn't particularly want to ask, but in the interest of making sure he didn't pick the wrong herb, he looked over to the others and gestured meaningfully at the plants. "Is this burnet?"

Silentleap had picked about 3 dandelions before Goldenpaw spoke up.
He looked over his shoulder at what Goldenpaw was pointing to.

Silentleap tilted his head. Hm. He wasn't really much of a medicine cat, but maybe it was burnet.

Silentleap trotted up to the flowers and sniffed them. They were slightly close to the color of the burnet leaves, and they were spiky.
But, there are many other flowers that looked exactly like this, and Silentleap didn't want to mistake them.

"Hm. I'm actually not sure. Maybe we should take at least 4 just in case it is burnet."

His explanation seemingly sufficient, the gentle giant set on his way to find the herbs needed. Dandelions were easy to get, standing out among the rest of the flowers even in this grove. The burnet took a little longer to find. Finding a small bundle of the purple flowers he purred in amusement. They really were spiky little things, weren't they? Like a kit who'd woken up on the wrong side of the nest.

Happy with his find, Snowybreeze dipped his head, taking three of the leaves carefully with him. Mismatched ears perked up, however, when he heard talk close by. It seemed that Goldenpaw and Silentleap were chatting amongst themselves? That was all fine and good as far as the pale warrior was concerned. It was good to bond with clanmates in outings such as these! It was what they were discussing that brought a small frown of worry to his face.

Perhaps he had misheard, but he could have sworn he'd heard Silentleap tell Goldenpaw that this was burnet? A quick glance at the star shaped flowers and fuzzy leaves let him quickly know that was not the case. Maybe his explanation had not been as thorough as he had hoped? Oh dear. At least he had caught it on time. It wouldn't have done for them to arrive to poor Cowtuft with the wrong herbs over a simple misunderstanding.

Clearing his throat, Snowybreeze pawed at the air to catch his clanmates' attention, pointing at the leaves on his maw once he was sure he had it. Twitching his tail towards the source close by, the tom blinked apologetically, certain he must have said something horrendously wrong for them to assume it was fuzzy leaved herbs they were to gather. Perhaps he had mixed up the flowers and leaves in his description? Oh dear... this patrol had been nothing but confusion so far. Some patrol leader he was.

"Burnet," the young warrior added. He was normally not one for needless chatter amongst cats he was less familiar with, and he hated to insult their intellect by assuming they needed further explanation but... he really wanted to make sure he was being clear this time. It wasn't their fault he wasn't the clearest or most capable of warriors, to be honest.

This explanation done, the tom spun around, eager to get a few dandelions added to the mix as well. He was certain Cowtuft needed both. He would not have asked for a split herb patrol if there wasn't a dire need, after all. Gratefully, it did not take the patched tom long to find what he was looking for, and he dipped his head once more, carefully grabbing two dandelions by the stems and snapping them gently with his teeth. Hopefully there would be no further confusion and everyone would be able to get to get whatever herbs they could carry back now.

Goldenpaw nodded along to Silentleap's words, and as he stretched his neck out, opening his mouth to snatch up some of the not-burnet stalks, the sound of Snowybreeze clearing his throat caught his attention and he looked over to see what was up. Wait, what plant was he carrying? Was that...

Oh! Belatedly, Goldenpaw snapped his mouth shut. So that's what burnet looked like. Huh. Actually—he glanced back over to the plants he'd originally spotted—these didn't look much like burnet at all. Too fuzzy, and the flowers didn't look like the ones over near Snowybreeze. A flash of heat warmed his face and his tail lowered low to the ground as he realized his mistake.

"Right," he mumbled, offering one last look at the as-yet unknown plants before padding over to the burnet and picking a couple for himself. After a moment's hesitation, he backtracked to the dandelions and picked up one more. He still had room for more, but the texture of the plants in his mouth was making him a little uncomfortable and he didn't think he could deal with more. Goldenpaw nodded to Silentleap in silent agreement. This was all they needed, right? Hopefully he hadn't somehow made another mistake.[ Alchemist Kitsune - Snowybreeze | RunningInTheHeather - Silentleap ]

It was still early in the morning when the warrior and his apprentice reached the grove. The place was filled with different kinds of prey, as well as birds, making this place perfect for the training session he had in mind for Cedarpaw. The tom turned to her and sat down with his tail wrapped around his paws. "I'm thinking we'll do some hunting today - sounds good?" He asked, altough it wasn't really a question. More like, "this is what we are going to do today so you better put up with it". He took a few seconds to himself, laying out a plan for the training session before he started.

"Alright, let's start with the very basics - what and what not to catch. Mice, voles, smaller birds like sparrows, robins and so on. They are delicious, usually not much of a hustle to catch, plus they are everywhere around here." The brown tabby gestured to the grove where they were sat. "And as for rabbits, you'll find them in the open fields" He gestured tail in the direction of the open moorland before continuing. "They are delicious, but a bit trickier to catch, they will also not hesitate to bite back if they feel threatened. Trust me.. it hurts.. I know that from experience" Hawksprint informed Cedarpaw. He paused for a few seconds, that should be it, for now at least. "Now, moving on to what not to catch.." He said, a stern look on his face as he made eye contact with the molly. "Birds of prey are very dangerous, especially to a young apprentice like you. Even with full grown warriors, it takes a group of them who knows exactly what they're doing to take down even one bird of prey. So, stay away from any falcons, eagles or hawks. I don't want you to become lunch for some stupid bird" He said, adding the last part mostly as a joke. However, he did care for his apprentice, and he wouldn't want her to end up hurt.. or worse. "Got it?"

Hunting! Great! She was pretty excited to learn about hunting. It was something that would prove her useful to Windclan.

She suddenly remembered Owlkits request. Owlkit wanted Cedarpaw to catch and bring him a frog. Hawksprint said nothing about catching frogs.

Hawksprint tilted his head to his apprentice. "Frogs? Why would you want to catch frogs?" He asked with a confused look on his face. He was glad that Cedarpaw was asking questions though, so he decided he'd try his best to answer it. "Well.. Frogs aren't really something WindClan is known for, you know. That's more ShadowClan's thing" The tom was unsure if there even were any frogs to catch around here. Perhaps in a few ponds here and there, he thought. "I've never hunted a frog before, but I'd assume it's not that much different from hunting a mouse or vole, probably even easier since they're not as quick" Hawksprint looked at his apprentice, she wasn't thinking about eating frog, right? Those things were slimy and probably very yucky, however, if she wanted to catch one he might aswell teach her how. "I'd say your best shot at finding a frog would be at ShadowClan's border.. but please don't go there alone. They have killed tresspassing cats before and won't hesitate to do it again. It's better to search around small ponds or puddles, I'd say" He hoped that'd answer Cedarpaw's question. He also hoped that she wouldn't be stupid enough to wander off to ShadowClan's border all by herself just to catch a frog for StarClan knows whatever reason. "Any other questions?"

Cedarpaw knew what she asked was suspicious. What Windclan cat would want to eat a frog? Hawksprint was right for being a bit hesitant. But, now that she knew where frogs were... No, it was stupid. She would get hurt, (If she wasn't dead first!) She was sure Owlkit didn't want that. But- she couldn't say no. Owlkit would have that sad face again, she didn't want to see that. Why did Owlkit even want a frog anyway?

She had decided she was going to check the border but not cross it- unless she sees a frog. But she'll be quick and quiet. Nobody would notice her. She'll stay away from patrols and wandering cats. Nobody would see her. She minds as well keeping it a secret anyways.

"Just wondering, " She replied, hoping Hawksprint believed that. Well, it was the truth. Half of it. A quarter of it... none of it. That's fine! No cat needs to know anyways! She smiled and shook her head. "No more Questions."

If you say so, he thought to himself, a feeling of doubt inside him that he quickly dismissed. Instead, he decided to move on to the next part. "Good, then let's start talking about how to catch your prey. The hunter's crouch is something every cat needs to know in order to efficiently stalk their prey, so let me show you" Hawksprint explained, then took a few steps away from Cedarpaw. Dropping in to a crouch, he started explaining. "Drop down low, make sure your belly is almost touching the ground and keep your tail low, remember - you don't want your prey to spot you when you're creeping up on it. Also, make sure you have your legs positioned steadily underneath you, makes it easier to balance" He meowed, lowering his tail. It was usually tricky to get it right, but with some practice it'd become a very useful move. He waited to make sure Cedarpaw could get a good look at the move. "Now, you give it a try" Hawksprint said, staying in the crouched position.

The tom waited patiently, staying in the crouch position to make it easier for Cedarpaw to copy him. He watched her wobble around for a bit but she seemed to catch on pretty quickly and was soon doing a pretty decent hunter's crouch. She would obviously need to do some fine tuning on that later on, but for now it was good enough. "Good, you catch on quickly" He praised her. Now, he wanted to move on to stalking. Hawksprint shifted the weight on his paws and started silently creeping forwards. "Follow me" he said quietly and motioned with his tail. "Keep you paws off any dry leaves or twig, it will make a noise and scare away your prey" He informed her. It was difficult to pay attention to both your balance and where you put your paws at the same time, but practice makes perfect. The brown tabby led Cedarpaw through the grove. At one point he quickly glanced up at the sun, it'd be sunhigh soon. They still had some time to get everything done, he thought to himself. He soon stopped with by a tree, and sat down with his tail wrapped around his paws. Hawksprint hoped she had time to practice her stalking while still not get too tired - since it could get pretty tiring after a while.

Pebble? A pebble could be easy.

You got this Cedarpaw, balance is important. Balance is key. Was balance really the key? Maybe, she would find out soon. As she dropped into an almost Perfect hunting crotch. Good start! She looked over towards Hawksprint, looking for any sign of Impression. She quickly turned away. Facing the pebble.

Moving closer, she prepared to pounce. Also trying not to step on anything that could make noise.

Which didn't include her paw, perhaps.

Cedarpaw was just about to take another step. Until she tripped on her own paw!

Tumbling over, she headed for the direction of the pebble. Crushing it. Also maybe breaking 5 million bones in the process.

Her side hurt the most, being the one who took the hardest blow. She looked over to Hawksprint. "I still got the Pebble, that counts right?"

Hawksprint thought for a bit, then turned to her. "You should practice some more on that stalking and pounce, first. At the same time, I believe in trying and finding out, and learning from your mistakes" He decided after a short while. "I wasn't planning on letting you do actual hunting today but.." The tom paused, looking around him and sniffing the air. There was plenty of prey around here, he supposed it couldn't hurt to practice on actual prey. She had gotten the crouch down pretty good, and well.. the pounce could use a little work but what better way was it to learn that from her own mistakes? "Okay, we will do some hunting. But first, I'll demonstrate, okay?" He continued and then sniffed the air once more, this time focus on differentiating the different scents from one another and picking out a singular one. Vole. "Can you smell that scent? That's a vole" He informed her in a hushed voice and motioning with his paw in the direction of the vole. "It's important that we are quiet from now on. Try to use tail signals to the best of your ability, and make sure to follow mine. I'm sure you already know the most simple ones already, like stop, follow and get down" He explained and demonstrated the tail signals by first pointing his tail straight up, then doing a light flick with his tail over his back, and lastly flattening his tail.

After waiting to make sure that Cedarpaw had understood everything he had explained, he flicked his tail over his back and quietly snuck away in between the trees and ferns in the direction of the vole. Hawksprint soon spotted it, sitting near a bush, busy digging in the dirt. As soon as he spotted it he dropped down into a crouch, flattening his tail towards Cedarpaw, then slightly pointed it upwards, keeping it low enough as to not alert the prey but at the same time informing Cedarpaw to stay back and watch. He slowly crept forwards, his paws naturally placed down on the dirt and avoiding any leaves or twigs. At one point the vole stopped digging and stood up on its hind paws to sniff the air. The brown tabby froze mid-step, with one paw still in the air. He felt the breeze in his face, good, the wind was blowing towards him which meant the vole wouldn't be able to scent him. As soon as it went back to digging, Hawksprint piked up the stalking again and crept closer until he was a couple tail lengths away. He wiggled his hind legs slightly, as if he was winding up. Sparing a second to judge the distance, he pounced. With a quick leap he landed on top of the vole, delivering a swift and killing blow. Happy with his catch, Hawksprint dipped his head and thanked StarClan for his catch, before quickly digging a hole underneath the bush to store his vole while Cedarpaw hunted. Once done, he padded over to her and sat down.

"And that's how it'd done. Any questions? If not, I want you to try and pick out a scent and follow it.. and if you're able to, try and catch it" He spoke quietly.

Cedarpaw watched Hawksprint closely, staying as far away as possible so she wouldn't mess up his hunt. She watched as he skillfully caught the mole.

"Nice catch," She mumbled, still a bit bummed out by the pebble thing. If she couldn't even catch a pebble, what makes anyone think she could cross the Shadowclan border and catch a frog? She gave Hawksprint a weak smile, before sniffing in the air.

She assumed nothing would be nearby until the scent of Rabbit hit her nose. She smiled, copping Hawksprints tail movements. She flicked her tail over her back, hoping she properly told Hawksprint to "Follow and get down" with her tail.

She only knew she was tracking a Rabbit because of the scent. It smelt a lot like the Rabbit she ate a day ago. Strange she remembered. She followed the Smell to a small clearing, it didn't look just like the moors Windclan used to run in, but it at least looked somewhere a Rabbit would place its den.

Carefully watching her Pawsteps, she turned a glance behind her to see if Hawksprint was still following her. She turned her gaze straight back. Looking around the clearing for movement, she scanned the area.

The scent of Rabbit was getting stronger as she moved more into the clearing. A puddle of Deep-dark brown hit her eyes. A Rabbit's den! She sneaked a bit closer to the hole "H-" She shushed herself from yelling so loudly.
From afar, she took a good glance inside. Baby Rabbits! Aww... they're all so cute! She looked closer into the nest. Turning a sad glance toward Hawksprint. Do I have to kill them?

She really didn't care whether he said yes or no, she wanted to keep one!

She shoved her muzzle into the nest, touching one of the babies with her nose. Nudging it and trying to bring it closer so she could grab it.

When the Baby Rabbit was within grabbing reach, she grabbed it like a kit. Being careful not to bite down too hard. It squirmed a bit, but not too much. It must be a day old.

"I know you are warrior age, and... size, but you still shouldn't have gone alone." pausing for only a mere second "Alright enough talk, you ready to hunt" flashing her teeth in a pearly grin.

"Look, Cedarpaw.." Hawksprint sighed. "I want you to think.. what is going to happen if you take it back to camp?" He asked her. Some would kill it, most likely. If not, it would starve within a few days anyways. Hawksprint felt bad as he looked at her, he could see why she'd want to keep it but at the same time she had to understand she couldn't just keep a baby rabbit, right? She needed to learn how to kill. Sure, some prey might be cute, but she had a responsibility and a clan to feed. The warrior wanted her to understand that, but tried his best to be gentle when explaining.

Seeing that all of her patrol-mates had arrived, Mousefern guided them out of camp and to Sunset Grove instead. Honey and random flowers.. Surely this would be easy. Probably, at least–the random herbs would be the easy part. Honey? Not so much.

There was lots to find here, in terms of herbs. “Cowtuft said that he wants honey and random herbs, so.. I suppose we can pick up whatever we find here and hope that it’s useful.” The molly chuckled quietly, more to herself as she trotted along, her gaze raking over their surroundings in search of the beehive that their Medicine Cat had told them about before they left. “Remember to keep your eyes peeled for a beehive!”

Mousefern then leaned down, sniffing at the flowers and shrubbery that grew in this area of their territory. She wasn’t too sure what would be very useful to their medicine cat–so she could just grab at anything, right? He did say random, so she would provide random. She nosed at a green plant–it looked kind of like a bush, just… More leafy? Maybe it would be of use, who knows? She plucked a few of the leaves off of the plant, holding the three large pieces in her maw. “Any sign of a beehive?” She asked once she lifted her head, words slightly muffled.

Hemlockpaw swiftly followed after Mousefern out of camp a into the territory. They were supposed to be getting honey and.. what else? Flowers? What kind of flowers? This was one of the times Hemlockpaw questioned why he was in a clan in the first place. Hemlockpaw looked over at Mousefern as she spoke. Keep a eye out for a beehive? Ze could do that.

The apprentice didn't pay much attention to what Mousefern was grabbing only looking around before spotting something. It was in a tree and covered in small things moving around.

"Oi! Is that what we're lookin' for?"

Hemlockpaw called out before looking over to its patrolmates.

Mousefern’s head perked up at their calls, her ear twitching from a sudden downcast wind before she turned her attention towards.. Ah, a beehive! Perfect! The cream-coloured molly trilled before she padded after her patrol mates, nodding in a cheerful manner. “Yes! A beehive indeed.”

Admittedly, she had never actually.. Gotten honey before. Would it be a good time to say that? Yeah, probably. “So.. I don’t suppose either of you know how to actually go about retrieving the honey?” She asked, a nervous chuckle escaping her as she took a few slow paw steps forward, wanting to get closer to the beehive, but not too close!

This was the last place they had to visit, a patch of woodlands more on the fringe of the prairie. The trees reminded her too much of ShadowClan and ThunderClan's territories, but she had to admit that it was a nice place and had an ample amount of prey. She saw a squirrel, prey that wasn't overly common in the open flatlands, racing up the trunk of a tree and noticed nests and smaller birds flocking along the branches of the aspen trees.

"This is to be hunting grounds for WindClan. There is a small variety of prey that isn't usually found within the prairie that can be here, not to mention herbs." Twilightstar meowed as she brushed her flank against the side of a thin truck. They could probably figure out how to climb these, although, why they needed to learn how to climb a tree was questionable.

"Any ideas on what we should name this place?" Twilightstar quired, looking at her small group of cats and then back up at the towers and trees that surrounded them. This chunk of territory felt a little suffocating to her, but the leaves were nice to look at. A bright shade of yellow-orange, that reminded Twilightstar immensely of the sun.

At her young age, Lightningpaw had not seen much in the form of trees. The closest she had gotten to it was the Galewood back at camp and the trees that began towering the closer they got to ShadowClan's border. Of course, the day she'd been there had been the day they'd found Maplepaw, and appreciating the scenery had been out of the question. The molly could still feel apprehension and anger whenever she thought of the events that led to finding the apprentice's body. The conversation that followed. There were no such impudences here, however, and she could freely gape at the towering foliage, her gaze travelling to the top of the copse and the singing birds high above.

Mesmerized as she was, the wiry framed Abyssinian almost missed the leader's question, her ears perked up as Fogpaw took to answering it. Nose wrinkling slightly at the thought of naming such a beautiful place something like Golden Meadow - especially when they had just named the last place Starry Meadow - didn't sit well with her. She liked variety, thank you very much. There was no time to word this, however, as Fogpaw quickly amended her choice, dubbing it instead Sunset Grove. With another glance cast to the top of the trees, Lightningpaw smirked. Sunset Grove. She liked that. It rolled easily off the tongue, and much like the Sunset Roses, seemed to evoke the very essence of twilight.

"Sunset Grove," Lightningpaw repeated, letting the name escape her as she tested saying it. It was instantly familiar. Like if it had always been so. "Can't imagine this place going by any other name, really. I'll cast my vote for it," the lithe apprentice purred, her tail giving a content sway in the breeze.

Sniffing the difference in the air around the small grove, massive paws trudged down the enclosed space - compared to the rest of their territory - with wonder. Snowybreeze could never understand how the other clans did it. Sleep with so much cover. Having to fight for their right to glimpse the night sky. It might have its benefits during the stormier seasons, for certain, but he wouldn't trade WindClan's flat, open territory for the rest of the clan's territories combined.

Even with this mentality, however, the gentle giant could admit to the beauty in this place. There was a serenity to it. The scent of prey and herbs were heavy in the air as well, promising an easy bounty for those who chose to look further than their noses. At Twilightstar's words, the young warrior wondered what he would call such a place, but his mind drew nothing more than a blank. He really didn't think it was his place. To give the name their descendants would know this place by. The name that would be immortalized in WindClan history.

A few apprentices soon spoke up, however. Fogpaw - the lovely apprentice that had helped him gather up the kits during the fire - offered a few names, and the medicine cat apprentice was quick to back up the option she was most fond off. With a thoughtful look upon his features, Snowybreeze turned his gaze skyward once more, honestly rather enjoying both names. Perhaps they could join both? Sunset Meadow? Golden Grove? Oh, he rather liked the sound of Golden Grove. Still, the white furred warrior had never been one to be confrontational, and considering all the names were so nice, it would be silly to get in an argument over something he already thought was quite wonderful in the first place. With a purr and a nod, the patched tom agreed with the apprentices. Sunset Grove was a fitting name for this location.

Owlkit admired the new hunting grounds, giddy with excitement for the day he'd get to chase prey like a real warrior. A sudden itch in his nose distracted him from what the older cats were talking about; something about naming this new place...

His fur had almost dried completely, only slightly damp from earlier. However, his shivering still lingered. Then, he let out what sounded like a mix between a cough and a sneeze. The sound refused to leave his throat, instead choosing to pound in his chest like a nasty hiccup before escaping through his nose. He shook his head wildly as his body racked with each sneeze.

He pawed at his nose irritably as the sneezing finally subsided. Ugh, Owlkit felt really tired all of a sudden... and weak too. Maybe walking around with drenched fur all day wasn't such a good idea.

~ TWISTEDPAW OF WINDCLAN ~

Small, skinny, black she-cat with a light gray belly and tail-tip; has a crooked jaw, mangled tail, and one blind eye.

Placeholder ref sheet can be viewed here (https://warriorcatsonline.com/forums/album.php?albumid=4480&pictureid=39537).

Twistedpaw padded along with the rest of the group. Her legs burned, feeling as if they were made of stone as she stumbled, her mangled tail making her lurch this way and that. It was an effort to keep up with the others. Her breath came in weak, gasping pants, rasping oddly between her misaligned teeth. But she couldn't let herself get left behind. They were in an unfamiliar land where the sights and scents were nothing like the home Twistedpaw had known her whole life, the home that had been razed to the ground by scorching flames. So, she pushed onward despite her muscles begging her to stop and rest. I knew I should've eaten something this morning. Batglare would be very mad if he found out. But I wasn't feeling hungry, and there were so many other cats by the fresh-kill pile... Twistedpaw's paws tingled as her pelt pricked guiltily. Still, I should listen to my mentor. I'm a bad enough apprentice as it is.

She didn't want to be left behind, but the thought of interacting with her Clanmates made fear spark within her and her pelt burn with a vengeance. She couldn't stop thinking of her accidental naming of Starry Meadow, the beautiful bed of wildflowers that was to be WindClan's sacred burial grounds. I didn't deserve to give it that name, Twistedpaw thought, feeling guilty and nauseous as she remembered the gentle approval of Twilightstar, Leopardsong, and Wolffang and all those eyes burning into her. Such an important place, and it was named by me, a disgrace to StarClan, to WindClan, to every normal cat. Her paws shook. What if I've made StarClan mad? What if my Clanmates are upset with me? They hadn't said anything, but maybe they'd had more self-control than Willowsky and were staying quiet out of politeness.

The small black apprentice trembled, her hunger and exhaustion forgotten. She hardly saw who was around her; it was a miracle she didn't crash into anyone. Rather, she kept her working eye focused on the tails of Brightpaw and Mousefern, needing their closeness, their comfort. I don't know what I would do if they weren't here!

Eventually, they came to a stop. Twistedpaw was too scared to look up and see the faces of her Clanmates, so she tasted the air. A musky odor flowed over her scent glands... Trees? Leaves? She blinked, realizing it was cooler and darker here. She sniffed again. Rich prey-scents bathed her tongue. Her empty stomach rumbled, and she flattened her tiny ears against her head in supreme embarrassment. I hope nobody heard that! Twistedpaw gave her chest fur a few quick licks. She just wanted to curl into a ball and disappear, but... Her Clanmates were here. She couldn't leave them and wander off into unfamiliar territory. She was here to learn, wasn't she? So, she lifted her head, shoulders hunched, trying to make herself as small as possible.

Twistedpaw's eyes widened as she took in the open patch of woodland. Trees towered above her, slick, sunset-colored leaves rustling against coarse brown bark. She hadn't seen many trees before, having lived in the open moor her whole life. She'd only spotted them across the border or the odd one that grew in WindClan territory. Now it seemed they were including a patch of woodland in their borders. Will WindClan like it? she wondered anxiously. At least there's a lot of prey here... But the trees were odd. They closed in on her, looming and threatening. Twistedpaw pressed closer to Brightpaw and Mousefern. She didn't like them. They were scary.

These will be our hunting grounds? Twistedpaw swallowed. But... what about the open moor? She didn't dare open her mouth, though, instead gazing around with wide eyes and a fearful expression. Though the herbs... The territory was full of them. She felt a flicker of relief. Cowtuft and Lightningpaw won't run out. When Twilightstar asked for name suggestions, the she-cat stayed quiet. No way was she going to name anything else. Twistedpaw still felt terribly guilty about naming Starry Meadow, a sacred place anointed by a wretched cat. So why did she feel a flicker of pride when she thought about the warmth in Twilightstar's voice and her leader's smile?

ೃ⁀➷ [ open ! ]

The medicine cat never knew how isolating this path was. Perhaps it was a fault of his own. Cowtuft was friendly, outgoing, but he never sought out deeper connections. Fixated on healing his clanmates. When he was younger he sought out all the information possible. He still did, but there was a less dire need. Maybe it was the loss of his mother -- Cowtuft considered her lost. Stormwatcher. The fire had taken her but there was no body to be found. Still, it made him realize he had not one friend in WindClan. (Fallownose and Twilightstar were dear to him but they did not know his favorite color and he did not know theirs. )

The thought was horribly sad and he didn't understand how to repair this dire situation. The thought of getting close to someone filled with the unease of knowing they might pass away in his nest a moon later. Life was unpredictable, but at some point he had taken a step too close to isolation and there was no one.

It was why he was outside of camp. Cowtuft was searching for herbs. Nothing particularly in mind, just herbs to have on paw. Things to find, things to smell. Lightningpaw was back at camp that he felt comfortable enough to allow himself this small peace. He loved WindClan and its land. Beautiful and bountiful.

Sometimes, sometimes, he believed he had never took the time to be a kid. He tried to be grown that now when he was physically grown (actually, he still found himself growing) there was a gap. Something missing.

He shook his head gently. Right. This was supposed to be relaxing. A sigh, a very tired sigh, fell from his lips and he simply.. crumbled to the ground in a heap of fur. Trees loomed over him and the gentle song the birds sang were comforting...

ততততত

Oh dear. Dear oh dear. A tiny heap of fur, dark as the night, fluffy as a lamb and small as an ant, was happily scurrying around the open plains. She'd snuck away once more from her mummy (you know, the one little bit of misbehaving she allowed herself), trying to reach the ancient willow tree she called her secret base. But! Oh But!! It had begun raining on her path and, the poor poor child, soaked to the bone, got lost in the heavy downpour. A true tragedy, for she hadn't the faintest clue where she was now. But! That did not matter. The rain had long since stopped, and little Nyx had yet to realise she was lost, yes yes.

They were happily running around now, long fluffy fur even fluffier than normal as it began slowly drying up in the heat of the warm sun. She looked like a true puffball, now! And she was so happy! She was having fun running about, looking at her silly reflection in the little puddles that adorned the ground; very giddily at that. She'd see a puddle, poke her head over it, giggle, and then run to the next one, blissfully unaware of what dangers her surroundings may offer them.

That is until the little moon saw something. It was big, it was fluffy, and... It looked like Nathy! Kind of. But! But! It had ears, it had a tail, and it had four paws. But the ears looked different. They were all... Flop. Oh, oh! Kind of like her own ear - the overgrown thing that sometimes flopped over. Was this another.. Uhm... Whatever they were? Whoooaaaa. Mesmerized by the idea of it being another one like her, Nyx hid behind a little rock, definitely thinking she couldn't be seen. But ever the curious one, she carefully poked her dark head over the stone, mismatched eyes gleaming in the sunlight as she observed the flop down.

Oh no!! Her flowers had looked all flopped over when Nathy fell onto them and hurt them... Was the big thing hurt? Hurt wasn't good, no no. Not at all. The little kitten pursed her lips, a biiiiig crease forming across her brow as she had to make an important decision. Mummy always said stranger danger, but! If the stranger was hurt! But! She wasn't even sure if it was like her! But did that really matter? She liked playing with the birds and squirrels near her tree, and they weren't like her. Oh no, she shouldn't discriminate, no no! Of the big thing was hurt, then she had to do the checky on them; yes yes.

Cautiously stepping away from their stone, little Nyx quiiiietly sloooowly stepped close, and closer, and closer. Until eventually, she stood really near the big thing, looking up with droopy doe eyes.
"... you. alright? Flower ... hurt?"
The little kitten's head tilted curiously, expression now relaxed as they silently looked up at the big thing with care. They paused for a few moments, thinking deeply before pipping up again with a smile.
"Nyx ... help!"

Had it really just been this morning that she had received her apprentice name? Couldn't have been, it seemed so long ago! Her legs were practically falling off trying to keep pace with Mousefern. It looked like Twistedpaw had already dropped back, and Brightpaw had only just registered that before they were suddenly in the shade of a tree. A tree? But they were in WindClan territory, and WindClan didn't do trees. Brightpaw frowned up at one, spotting a nest in its branches.

"What type are they?" she asked her mentor, the tiredness apparently disappearing as she padded up to the roots and sniffed around. Not that knowing the name would mean much to her, but it might be useful to know one day.
It was strange being surrounded by the tall plants, she hadn't really seen trees before when she was in camp, but she guessed that it would be even stranger for older cats who had been around the territory more, and now had to adapt to hunting in woodland. "Will I learn to climb them?" She thought of ThunderClan and ShadowClan. They had loads of trees to practice on.
She looked at her sister. "It would be fun, don't you think?"

The deputy let out a low huff of amusement at Scorchedfang's words, beckoning him to follow with a flick of his tail. "You're a member of WindClan now, it won't matter to them. If it does, then they can speak to me," he said, assuming that the other tom was worried about his status as a former Outsider.

"How have you been settling in? I haven't gotten to see much of you, which is quite the shame." It was part of the reason Fallownose had only asked Scorchedfang to come on the patrol to Sunset Grove with him. That, and he had missed the other tom despite not knowing him for that long.

What a strange concept to him. Being a part of something.. a unit, that was not truly a family but tried to pretend. Granted, Fellcone's perspective of family was skewed. He did not remember his well, just glimpses of imperfections and hatred. "How terrifying! They will quake in their paws, having to speak to the handsome devil of a deputy." The thought was amusing, actually. Fallownose was as intimidating as a mouse - though perhaps that stemmed from Fellcone being a beast, or how he had experienced far worse than anything Handsomefellow could dish out.

Regardless, he brought up a compelling question. How was he faring? "It.. is different. I spent a long time alone, so being around many cats is a considerable change." It was not necessarily a bad thing, just something to get accustomed to. "The Clan has been pleasant." Quiet, which he did not personally favor. Fellcone had a faint glimmering of something more lively-- alert, ready to face whatever the world had to offer. When blood spilled into a dark clearing, and power reigned supreme. Twilightstar did not scream power to him. She leaned more passive, trying to stay out of trouble.

These were things he would not voice. Not yet; he did not believe he had a say so soon after being invited in. Besides, he did not know how Fallownose would handle being told they needed to fight more things. If he was happy with the peace, who was Fellcone to ruin that? "It has been a shame. We should get out more often.. just the two of us." A sly wink, his tail flicking with the intent of running it against Fallownose's chest. "So, this is Sunset Grove?"

The small opening in the woods was pretty, but Fellcone's attention fell on movement below a tree. In a flash, he was on the move - dropped to a crouch, gliding across the floor like a professional. The forest felt closer to a home than any field, and soon enough he was close enough to leap. The sparrow he spied saw him too late, trying to flutter to freedom as his paws closed around it and he killed it with a quick nip. Crack!

"You're up, sugar." He spoke through a mouthful of feathers, sitting up before he dug a brief hole to bury the bird in. Anything to keep it safe.

A soft breeze swept across the woodland, and Starryeyes felt it gently tug at their fur. They closed their eyes and sat quietly for a moment, giving themselves time to simply breathe and feel at ease. After perhaps a minute, they reintroduced their eyes to the world through a series of slow blinks.

Now content, they turned to their sibling, who they had been looking forward to dragging here. Starryeyes thought the place was marvelously peaceful; quiet, but not too quiet; open, but not too open — a pleasant contrast from the large majority of WindClan’s territory: plains, plains, and more plains. Alongside being more aesthetically pleasing to look at compared to dirt and pale grass, the trees here provided ample shade from the unforgiving sun, whose growing heat they hadn’t yet gotten accustomed to.

The lil guy waved his tail, a small gesture to get Tallsmoke's attention before he spoke so that he wouldn’t be breaking the silence too abruptly. “Hello ^^;” he greeted, his voice mellow.

“I suppose we’ll be doing this as a pair instead.” She mew, whiskers twitching almost unnoticeably, as she turned to Owlpaw. She wasn’t necessarily upset, just trying to understand the odds of having a cat back out of a patrol twice in a row; she chalked it up to bad luck, in the end. “Ready?” She searched the apprentice for any sign of confirmation before leading the way out of camp and to their destination.

Sunset Grove. She still wasn’t completely used to it, but it was definitely growing on her after her participation in the Boot Camp. She wasn’t here to teach apprentices how to hunt though, she was looking for herbs. “Cowtuft asked us to find Cobwebs, Yellowbells and—or Sunfuzzies.” She turned to face Owlpaw before speaking, though she was already glancing around in search of what she had listed. Not knowing of Owlpaw’s herb knowledge, she decided to just repeat what Cowtuft had told her. “Cobwebs aren’t too hard to find—bushes, crevices, trees—once you find them you just need to get a stick and wrap it around the end.” That’s how she’d always done it, but if the apprentice did otherwise she wouldn’t mind.

She thought back to the flower the medicine cat had showed her, eyes narrowing in concentration in the process. “Yellowbells are similar to buttercups, thin petals and all that. Sunfuzzies have thicker petals—they look just like their name.” She gave herself a short nod, eyes returning to Owlpaw. “Look around, don’t stray too far, and just grab what you can find.” She said with a soft nod, aimed at the apprentice this time, and stood up with a swish of her tail.

She meandered off a bit, keeping an eye on Owlpaw before comfortably padding off, never too far, and always within hearing or scenting distance of her patrol mate; the last thing she wanted was for a young cat in her care to get hurt, or anything of the sort. … There were cobwebs here and there, but she deemed the herbs a bit more important and kept looking. Her efforts eventually paid off, and she did find a nice cluster of the herb Cowtuft had showed her and grabbed a mouthful of the Sunnyfuzzies, careful not to damage any part of the plant too much.

Owlpaw didn't know a thing about herbs, or at least no more than any other apprentice. He did know what cobwebs were though, and decided to start searching for those first. He grabbed the nearest stick he could find and scoured every bush, crevice, and tree until he spotted a few cobwebs to collect. +2 Cobwebs

Now that he had found some cobwebs, he guessed it was time to search for those yellow flowers Longmoor was talking about. He didn't know what a Yellowbell or Sunfuzzie would look like besides the fact that they were probably both yellow. How was he meant to tell the difference? Oh well, it may not matter since he was supposed to grab one or the other anyways.

Owlpaw went over and picked the first yellow flower he saw and took it over to Longmoor for examination. The flower was yellow of course, with over a dozen petals all layering over each other. Its stem was a tad thicker than other flowers, and the center had these strange darker yellow strands sticking out of it. +1 Dandelion

She was glad to see Owlpaw had some success as well, taking a quick look at what the apprentice had gathered. She didn’t want to put the herbs in her mouth down, but she also wasn’t going to try and mumble around them, so she decided to just use gestures to get her point across.

A slow blink and a friendly nudge to her patrolmate’s flank was her way of saying ‘Good job.’ And she jerked her head towards the camp with a flick of her tail, padding slowly to make sure Owlpaw got the idea and understood where she was trying to go. Just in case though, she did choke out. “Camp.” —and just as she had thought, it came out horribly muffled. She mentally shrugged it off, telling herself not to treat Owlpaw like a kit and just focus on getting home before she started drooling.

Looked like he chose the right flower, or at least he assumed he did by Longmoor's encouraging gestures. He didn't know too many signs besides the ones he made up, but he got the gist of what she was trying to say. He noticed her nod in the direction of camp, followed by a muffled attempt to say it aloud. The ebony apprentice smiled and let out a silent, breathy laugh. He scooped up the sticks and single flower he'd found and followed Longmoor back home.

WORD COUNT: 400 / 80 pts

The slate-gray tom huffed out a purr at Scorchedfang's comment. "I'll have you know I can be very scary when I want to be." Not that he would want to scary away the handsome tom he was patrolling with. That would make Fallownose very sad.

"I am glad that you aren't have any issues. If you ever need anything, you can always come to me," he mewed sincerely. Though, hopefully Scorchedfang would need something soon. He was quite enjoyable to spend time with.

Before Fallownose could respond about where they were located, Scrochedfang was off. Yellow-amber eyes blinked as he tracked the massive tom's smooth movements. The crack of the sparrow's neck brought the deputy out of his little trance, and his heart fluttered as Scorchedfang called him sugar.

"I suppose I can't let you outdo me," Fallownose managed to say, tearing his eyes away from Scorchedfang to glance around the grove. And then he had the perfect idea.

Bunching his muscles, he leapt, claws scoring into the trunk of a nearby tree as he grasped the lowest branch with his forepaws. With smooth movements he pulled himself onto it, tail flicking out as he balanced.

Fallownose didn't bother to glance down to see Scorchedfang's reaction, his attention stolen by a mouse that shuffling under the fallen leaves of a nearby tree.

Judging the distance between himself and the mouse, the tall tom lowered himself on the branch and crept forward until it swayed dangerously under his weight. Without another thought he leapt.

The feeling of flying through the air was exhilarating for the brief moment it lasted. All to soon he was on the ground, landing with a thump, the mouse dead between his forepaws, having been crushed from the force of Fallownose's landing.

Picking it up in his jaws, the deputy turned to Scorchedfang with a smirk and raised eyebrow. A challenge.

As they reached the grove, Dreamlight turned to the apprentice with a warm and friendly glint in her eyes, but a stern tone. "Alright you two, let's get hunting. We're looking for an herb with large, long leaves and big black roots, although we won't be able to see the roots until we dig it up... I don't think. Brightpaw nodded to Dreamlight and scoured the are with her eyes, wishing that she were just a bit taller and thus have a wider field of view. Large, long leaves, the tan-and-white apprentice repeated in her head. That looks like it might fit the description... She turned sharply to the sound of snorting, slashed Owlpaw an amused grin then dashed off to the place she had seen the comfrey. Tangy scent, check. She scratched at the dirt around it. Black roots, check! "Found some!" She called over her shoulder, and started to rip the roots out of the earth while being careful to keep the leaves safe. The plant came out with a snapping sound as the tips of the root broke. Oops. Well, it seemed like there was still enough to take back, though maybe she could have been a bit more careful.

Dreamlight giggled quietly as Owlpaw took what she was saying literally and shoved his face into the dirt seeming to look for their herb...or the roots. She left him be, for now, assuming he'd figure it out himself. She lifted her ears as she heard Brightpaw's call, and she padded over to join her while calling for her apprentice. "Owlpaw." It made more sense to search where some had already been found.

She peeked over Brightpaw's shoulder as the apprentice pulled the herb up, internally wincing as Brightpaw managed to separate some root from the herb in the process. "Well good work, Brightpaw, it looks like you got a good chunk of the root out so I wouldn't worry about the rest of it." Dreamlight praised, she didn't think Lightningpaw would make too big a fuss about it.

Now knowing what the herb looked like, Dreamlight forged a little further in and found another small cluster of comfrey. Only this one was tangled up with ivy... Dreamlight sighed softly and began the grueling process of nipping and tugging the ivy off the plant. She set down the bigger chunks of ivy nearby, uncertain whether they were needed but didn't see the point in not bringing them back home.

Dreamlight quickly got to digging once the ivy was cleared enough, she made sure to dig down past the roots so that when she pulled the herb up a clump of dirt came with the planet. Oh my... Dreamlight carefully set the plant down, scowling when she noticed she accidentally bit some of the leaves too hard and now had a bad taste in her maw. She dug out as much of the dirt as she could from the roots and glanced over at her apprentice. Tecumori MockingRabbit

Owlpaw perked up, round head swiveling as Dreamlight called him over. It looked like Brightpaw was the first to find the herb. He wanted to mirror his mentor and say 'good job!' to Brightpaw, but since he couldn't talk he had to settle with nodding and offered her a small smile instead.

Owlpaw walked over to the two, trailing after his mentor and watching as she struggled to separate some ivy and dirt from the herb she'd found. He stood around for a moment, not really doing anything until she turned to look at him. 'Oh!' Was he meant to help her? She looked just about finished with her own work, so Owlpaw looked around hurriedly for his own herb to dig up. He couldn't head back empty-pawed after all ~

Searching... searching... 'There!'

Nearby he spotted some long leaves similar to what Brightpaw had found earlier, and he rushed over to dig it up. Digging came easy to the young apprentice, as he quickly yet delicately dug around the plant and its roots. Once free, he gently pulled it up only to realize it was much smaller than the other two plants found today. Oh well, it would have to do. Owlpaw scooped up the little plant-- leaves, roots, and all-- and carefully carried it back to his mentor.

Brightpaw flicked some of the surrounding dirt into the hole where the plant had been. There didn't seem a practical reason to do so, but it felt wrong to her somehow to leave it. Not sparing it another thought, the tan-and-white she-cat turned to look at her two patrol mates and saw that they had also located some comfrey of their own. "We got enough?" She asked Dreamlight. It looked lie the warrior had just cleared off a patch of ivy vies, presumably so that she could get to the comfrey. Were vines of any use to a medicine cat? Maybe; she thought she heard Lightningpaw ask another patrol for sticks, no? And sticks were used for broken legs or something, so vines could be used to attach them better? Well, so long as no one tripped over them, Brightpaw didn't thing it would do any harm to bring them back to camp. If neither medicine cat wanted them, they could always chuck them out or weave them into the camp.

Dreamlight watched as Owlpaw found a small herb and brought it over to them. Alright then, so now everyone had their plants! The molly looked over at Brightpaw who sounded ready to head back. "Yup, grab your herb and we can head back," Dreamlight told her. The warrior huffed softly before carefully grabbing the ivy as well. She had no clue what use this was to a medicine cat, but she was sure they'd figure out something to do with it. Once everyone was ready, Dreamlight led the patrol back to the camp.

The breeze fluttered, rustling the leaves on the copse that hung so high above them, the place so different to the rest of their territory, but not in a negative way. With the amount of herbs offered to them here, it was hard to find fault in the more forested region WindClan had to offer. Tail held high in the air as Lightningpaw made her way through the underbrush, it wasn't long before she found what she was looking for. There, in a particularly sunny patch of grass where light was barely filtered by the canopy were the yellow orange blooms she'd promised to point out to the younger apprentice. Twitching her tail to get Poppypaw's attention, the wiry framed Oriental mix padded forward towards the flowers, gently picking two up by the stem.

"See these here, love? These are marigold. These and some dandelions would work wonders for us. I trust you to know what a dandelion is, considering it's constantly used as a toy in the nursery?" she asked, tilting her head curiously at the apprentice, making sure she knew what she was looking for before heading off in the search for some dandelion to add to her collection as well.

The sooner they were done here, the better. Two patrols in a single day followed by herb sorting? She was already tired, for star's sake. If she didn't fall asleep face first on the herbs she would honestly be more surprised than anything at this point. Honestly... what she would give to find some warriors that were actually worth their bloody name and weren't overly lazy feather brains sometimes... Still, what could she do? It wasn't like she could just leave poor Poppypaw alone to fend for herself just because no one else wanted to deal with herb patrols.

Cowtuft's stomach twisted and turned into a bundle of anxieties as he shuffled about Sunset Grove. It was early in the morning, sun peaking through the trees as he sniffed at bushes. After his experience with Russetpaw he came to an uncomfortable conclusion. He wouldn't be so foolish to believe there wouldn't come a time where he couldn't save a patient. Where it would be a mercy to let them go. Cowtuft still did not enjoy collecting deathberries. Especially considering how dangerous they are! (Could he lick it once and be dead in a few seconds?) And that prophecy Featherfoot had sent -- he never figured it out.

Eventually, the splotched medicine cat came across a bush with soft, red berries. He gave them a sniff, squinting at them. Cautiously he wrapped his jaws around a stick end and started to tug, teeth digging into the bark. After a few good tugs he got a small branch of berries. He would break off another small section before carrying the two carefully in his mouth. Cowtuft stifled a yawn and started to make a trip back to camp. It was cold in the mornings.

As he neared the grove, he caught a glimpse of a familiar pelt and paused. It seemed like Cowtuft was collecting deathberries.. Interesting.

He would have to think on that some more, it did not occur to him WindClan would do those practices too. In the meantime, he made sure to stay out of sight - did not need Cowtuft to ruin the fun.

Poppyoaw looked carefully at the flowers Lightingpaw held. She tried to imprint their shape in her mind. Maybe she’ll find some too.

”I believe I’ll recognize the dandelions when I’ll see them. “ she answered Lightingpaw’s question, after she hesitated a moment, thinking about what the medicine’s apprentice told her.
Dandelions are similar to marigolds.
This idea came to her mind, reinforcing her words.

The grey and russet she-cat looked around, searching for the plants. She needed to do her best in her first patrol.
They’re there! she mewed, proudly approaching a bunch of yellow flowers. She didn’t know if they were dandelions or marigold, but she kept her mouth shut.

Just as she was about to grab a flower, she noticed a small insect that was buzzing around the medicinal plant. She tried to drive it away with her paw, but the sweet-smelling insect started being noisier and headed towards her. Usually Poppypaw was more careful, but this time the excitement of going in a patrol made her thoughtless.
”Ah!“ with a warning scream, she jumped backwards, scared.
By chance she stepped on a branch and fell, and when she saw that the bee had caught up with her and was now basking in front of her eyes, she started to run around the flower in fear.
It looked like a funny scene from outside, but, much to Lightingpaw’s disappointment, the bee buzzed away bored, leaving Poppypaw alone.
The apprentice was breathing hard, and needing a moment to recover.

Flock Together [Tier 2] - Active

With a nod, the young molly allowed the apprentice to separate, knowing full well from experience it was sometimes best to be given some room to breathe. She understood the reasoning behind Twilightstar's reluctance to have apprentices leave camp on their own. There were some apprentices - namely the newer ones - who simply didn't know enough of the territory, or would still look too kittenish to potential predators and not make it back to camp, or any other number of reasons why it was safer for them to only leave when accompanied by a warrior. But she was proof, wasn't she? That an older apprentice could be trusted to leave the safety of the camp's walls to carry out a patrol, right? This wasn't her first time leaving the camp alone today! And stars knew that prior to being allowed outside of the camp on her own she would feel suffocated being under another's watchful eye all the time. No. It would be best to let Poppypaw have her well earned freedom.

Nose sniffing blooms as she looked through the sparse vegetation - dandelions were normally much easier to find than this... and she was getting worried - Lightningpaw finally found what she was looking for. The round, happy, bright yellow dandelion blooms. Or rather... bloom. With only one found, she could feel herself gulping slightly. Hopefully this wasn't a sign that her concerns had been valid, and they had over picked the herbs faster than they could grow. Knowing there was little she could do about it now, the lithe calico dipped her head and carefully picked the singular bloom, adding the dandelion to her small bundle of two marigolds. Perhaps this would be enough for now...

As she turned around to find her companion, a small cry of fear met her ears, and the older apprentice stiffened, instantly alert to her surroundings. The problem was quickly noted, albeit a bit... confusing. It seemed that Poppypaw had a small fear of bees? There was certainly a bee besides her, but after a less than coordinated tumble courtesy of a branch jutting through the grove's undergrowth, it merely flew away. It might not have truly been meaning to harm the younger molly from the start, or perhaps the healer's own approach had calmed it down? It was always hard to tell. Animals seemed to behave a little... differently around her. Like if she wasn't even there. Of course, she never stuck around to see if they would stay amicable for too long with anything other than bees, but bees in particular just seemed to really, really like her.

Reaching the diluted tortie's side, Lightningpaw sniffed her over, a small frown of concern on her brow as she noticed the heavy breathing. True, she had just fled from a bee but... that had barely constituted a run, especially when compared to the flights WindClan cats had to do on a constant just to keep up with their main source of prey. Sitting down besides her, allowing her patrolmate some time to catch her breath, she waited patiently, not sensing an urgency in her laborious breath yet, but not wishing to further extrapolate it. It was only when she sensed the apprentice had enough of a rest that she spoke. "How long has that been going on, love?" she asked, quirking her brow.

There was no admonishment in her voice, merely light curiosity. It would do the medicine cat apprentice no good here to reprimand the molly if this had been going on for long without any medicinal attention. Especially when there was no treatment. She had her tests, of course, but she hadn't shared the results of such yet. Not to mention, she hadn't her herbs present, either! Hopefully it was a one time thing, but if not... perhaps her tests would prove useful sooner than she'd expected.

Deadmoon didn't come to Sunset Grove very often, but with Turtlepaw in tow, it seemed like about the right thing to do. If she was going to teach him anything about hunting rabbits were probably to be avoided, seeing as she lacked the necessary speed most of the time. Normally she didn't mind missing out on a few, and maybe hunting some birds in the meantime, but she was far better at the stalking and pouncing type hunting than running things down, so that's what she'd teach him. It was a good long walk out from the camp, but they hadn't gone all the way when she stopped. Probably best to teach him a bit away and then go in so as to leave a bit of prey to actually hunt.

I imagine your mentor will teach you how to hunt rabbits, or has done already otherwise they were certainly slacking. Poor Goldenpaw had been forced to learn from her, but Turtlepaw would probably get better instruction. so we'll focus on rodents and birds today. It's the same basic crouch, but you emphasize different things in each. Birds rely on sight and sound to sense predators, whereas rodents feel vibrations and sniff you out. That was a bit of oversimplification of course, but it would hopefully keep him doing about the right things till he had a bit more experience. First, just hop into a basic crouch. We'll correct it from there. In case the apprentice didn't quite know what she wanted, she hopped into a crouch herself, tail flat and haunches pretty well collected below her.

It was....adequate. He might be able to catch something that way, though Deadmoon would have preferred his haunches a bit smoother. Thus, and without fanfare, she placed a paw on them, trying to squish them downwards while mewing Get that butt down a bit, I know you feel silly but it's how it's gotta be. It did look a bit stupid the first time, and felt terribly awkward, but it was the way you caught mice and birds, so he had to learn it. Fortunately Turtlepaw didn't seem overly put out about the whole thing, and Deadmoon was content to back off, instructing Now try crouching around a bit, so you can move like that, or similarly. The position might get a bit looser as he moved, but this was a good enough start. Spooky Galaxy

The walk that leads from camp out to the Sunset Grove isn't a long one, and it's because of this that Crowlight doesn't feel the need to fill the silence with small talk. His feathery tail brushes the tall heather of the moors as he walks along with the excitable apprentice from camp in tow. It dawns on him that he should ask her if she has seen any parts of the territory and start there, but by the time this thought occurs to him they have already arrived near the treeline.

"This is the Sunset Grove, he announced without much fanfare, gray eyes sliding over to Duskpaw who has hopefully followed him out. "...There are lots of... trees, as you can tell-" he was not good at this, "-and prey among them. And herbs, as well I suppose." Not much to his explanation as Crowlight moves forward, paws stepping onto the shorter grass that makes up the floor of the wooded area. Birds flutter about among the tree tops, though he has no interest in hunting at least right now.

It was better, for sure. Not perfect, but Turtlepaw would certainly be capable of hunting something down like this. He could move a bit too, so Deadmoon nodded in response to his question. That'll work. Looking over at the grove proper, and sniffing the air, she was decently hopeful that he'd get a good stab at something. When we head over there, you're going to scent something, sneak up on it in your crouch, and then pounce, like you would on a mossball. Realizing that they hadn't actually practiced the aforementioned pouncing, she inquired Do you want to practice the whole thing on a mossball or something, or have a go at some actual prey? He was probably going to want to go for the live prey, she would in his place, but it didn't hurt to ask. Spooky Galaxy

It was rather impulsive, and could get him into trouble if he was so eager during a battle, but she let it slide. She hadn't explicitly said for him to stick close, after all. And it was pleasing to see him catch something. Good job! she called, wiggling her tail in congratulation. Maybe see if you can find a bird and try hunting that? After all, this was for rodents AND birds, and it would be good for him to experience at least a bit of the difference between them now. Spooky Galaxy

Well, birds weren't the easiest prey in the meadow. The whole 'wings' thing gave them a bit of an advantage most of their other meals lacked. Deadmoon couldn't resist a little chuckle at Turtlepaw's exasperation, hastily tamping it down lest he think she was laughing at him. Well, she was, just not in a mean way. Really, it wasn't! Just....it was funny! The exasperation! Strong emotions were always a bit funny, seeing as she tried to avoid them as much as possible. They just led to irrationality and stupid decisions.

Once her little bit of mirth was under control, she called out a slightly more soothing That's how it goes sometimes! Birds can fly, and they like to show off that fact! into the corpse of trees. To this, she added Give it another try, you'll get one eventually! and hoped he wouldn't take the failure too much to heart. Occasionally apprentices got really moody when they messed up, for some unknown reason. Ego, or expectations, or something. She hadn't had to worry about that, her ego had been flat as a pancake leaving kithood and all parental expectations had already been flouted. Made learning a lot easier, really. Spooky Galaxy

Goodness, Turtlepaw was quite jumpy! Deadmoon wasn't even sure what he had stepped on, but whatever it was had sent him flying for cover. She, once again, couldn't resist a quick chuckle, ambling over to the bush and peering under it at the young tom. 'Ya good kiddo? He seemed quite affronted at the whole thing, which she found pretty amusing. Of course, he probably wouldn't appreciate being laughed at, but it was HARD! He was so...dramatic! Someday there might not be a rabbit around, and you'll have to catch a bird. Even if you don't do it much once you're a warrior, it's an essential skill. She hadn't received a lot of training with stalking prey as an apprentice, so there'd been a period of figuring it out on her own once she was a warrior and didn't have to try and chase the stupid rabbits she could barely catch anyway. This thought in mind, Deadmoon mewed Come on out, and try it again. waving her paw in the direction of the grove proper. Spooky Galaxy

Not lost on him is the way Duskpaw is watching the birds. Crowlight's gray eyes follow and he watches them dip and dive for a moment, eventually settling on one black-feathered one that has made its perch high above. "They'll take off before you could get all four claws in the trunk," he advises in a matter-of-fact voice, dropping his gaze and continuing along the path. Hunting birds that were not on the ground - and not with the element of surprise - was futile. Wings beat out legs every day, even the fastest ones.

"Is there a part of the territory... you would like to see next?" Instead of dragging her to random spots, Crowlight stops to ask the apprentice where she would like to go. Surely she's heard of the landmarks within the territory, or wondered which border is the most interesting. His apprentice days are well behind him so it's difficult for him to recall what had excited him most during his training.

Leopardsong wouldn't have minded teaching the apprentice, but it has been some time since she's been out of the nursery. She appreciated a little alone time. Though she remained fit, the forever queen quickly found her skills a little rusty when she located a mouse. She overshot the landing, missing the critter completely. She barely managed to sink her claws into the mouse's frail body before it reached the overgrowth and disappeared.

Disappointed with how messy that catch was, the queen swiftly padded off to go and search for something else to hunt. She found a rabbit not too far away and caught it without any problem this time. The queen had to chase it a bit as it spooked quickly, but running down the rabbit and pouncing on it had been quite fun. The chill she had originally felt vanished as her blood flowed, warming her up.

With the rabbit in her maw, she swiftly made her way back to where she hid her mouse and dropped the body there. While debating on if she should see if she could find something else, the white bengal went to check on how Dovepaw and Mallowwhisker were doing.

Upon seeing Mallowhisker and Dovepaw still hunting, Leopardsong decided to get back to hunting herself. She didn't have to go far to find a vole digging around a small bush. She caught it in one quick pounce and a bite to the neck. While dragging the small rabbit back to her other catches, Leopardsong spotted a big crow hopping around beneath the trees.

Dropping her rabbit slowly, she quietly crept up after the crow, wiggling her haunches, she launched herself at the crow, but missed it by a feather as it took off into the air. Birds were hard to catch, she wasn't very good at hunting them but at least she tried. Ears flattened in frustration, Leopardsong brought back her rabbit hide it nearby her small pile of prey and went searching for something else.

She had to move a bit further from her patrol than she would have liked, but it paid off in the end as she found a squirrel. She caught the rodent by its tail right before it bolted for a tree trunk, and nipped its neck. By the time she was done with that, Leoardsong found herself exceedingly exhausted. Her time in the nursery had her losing stamina apparently. Leopardsong wordlessly reminded herself to start getting back into shape.

Perhaps Wolffang or Leechscar would come to train with her when they weren't busy. Or she could make a game of exciting with the kits. That could be fun. Clearly done with hunting, Leopardsong collected her prey and made her way back over to the other two, wondering how they were doing.

So much trouble just to get the patrol organised...oh well they had gotten out of camp so why would anyone complain? Her patrolmates seemed nice Silverpaw did give off the impression she liked doing her own thing and Snowybreeze just seemed gentle...but she wasn't one to judge so she just kept her thoughts to herself and was polite as always.

Now what were they supposed to collect? Celandine was it? She wasn’t very good at plants but she could recall Lightningstorm saying it was a yellow flower...hmm, hopefully the others would have remembered it's description in more detail. With that in mind she turned to her patrolmates, who she'd try to keep pace with, and gave a nervous smile as to wait for orders from one of them as they were much older and she wasn't really the leader type.

He/Him || RiverClan Warrior

The Calico was doing his best to find what was asked of him. But he was only somewhat decent at this, and being a Clancat was still pretty new to him. He was still learning about their borders. So the tom was on a hardy look out for anything that would classify as a "border marker" , and he had yet to see one. His paws definitely hurt, he felt as though he'd been walking for forever. RiverClan territory sure did stretch out pretty far.

Ears perking up as a plant caught his eye. Nice and red, and one of the few live red ones he'd seen as well! Oh how exciting! Happily trotting over the Warrior bent down and snatched some. Although his bite was larger than he was anticipating. A few additional leaves and some plants he'd never seen sticking out from his maw.

Unknowingly, the tom had stepped well over the RiverClan border.

Fallowpaw opened her mouth slightly; she could smell a sweet scent coming from somewhere; she was unable to identify what it was as she had never exactly caught prey before and she also wasn't able to identify where it was located.

she twitched her whiskers in annoyance, she turns to her mentor, I can smell something sweet but I'm not sure where it is and what it is. she meowed dissapointedly.

"There's no shame in admitting you don't know," Softsong told her. "It's good that you told me you weren't sure - if you'd gone jumping off in any direction to try prove something, you might've scared it off."

Softsong opened her mouth to take in the scents.
"There's lots of smells here, so it might be a little tricky to tell what's what," she mewed. "The sweet smell you've caught could be prey - or it could be one of the plants. Lots of the plants Cowtuft uses are found around our territory. That damp, earthy smell is the fallen leaves beneath your feet, wet from the recent rains." Then she wrinkled her nose. "And that fishy scent is the stench of RiverClan cats. I'd wager one crossed the border recently." She lashed her tail. After she'd caught some prey, she'd investigate that scent properly and report back to Twilightstar.
"The direction of the wind, blowing the smells this way and that, can make it all the more confusing - that's why we use our other senses as well."

Softsong pricked her ears, listening for the telltale rustle of prey on the ground. "There," she hissed. "Do you hear that?" She pointed her tail to a shrew about 2 fox-lengths away, nosing around in the earth for bugs.

It wasn't just recent, it was filling her whole mouth with the awful stench - they must have just missed the RiverClan trespasser. Careful not to startle the prey, she followed to where the scent was strongest, keeping one eye on her apprentice as she did.

And there it was - a medicinal plant, well over the RiverClan border and with a huge chunk taken out of it. She bristled, tail lashing in anger. What did RiverClan think they were playing at, stealing herbs from WindClan territory? She'd report this to Twilightstar at once.

| Snowybreeze |
Heightened Perception [Smell] - Active | Rapid Recovery - Inactive

Massive paws made their way through the territory towards Sunset Grove, following after Frostpaw with a slow, easy gait. Much like his massive size and soft expression suggested, Snowybreeze was not one to rush through life, even during patrols. No... especially during those. Lest he... end up... covered in crowfood again. The thought alone was almost enough to make him shudder. His poor tongue, having to wash away the horrid taste. His sensible nose... devastated under the rank stench. And his upturned stomach, which was frankly not alright for at least a quarter moon afterwards. No no, taking it easy was much, much better in the grand scheme of things for certain.

Mismatched ears twitched one way and the other as the young warrior's sense of smell was slowly embraced with the overpowering scent of flowers and wood, the grove so different a location to anything else WindClan offered. While the quiet tom much preferred the open expanse offered out in the plateau, he would not deny the charm this place had. Despite the many scents that threatened to overtake his snoot, there was a delicate balance about the whole place, making it an overall welcoming, wholly enjoyable experience. Shaking his thick mane of fur, the Maine Coon mix looked around, keeping an eye out for both apprentices while also searching for the familiar yellow blooms the two of them had been asked to deliver. Gratefully, he was quite familiar with celandine at this point, and could quickly discover a nice batch of the eye catching flowers.

"O-over. Over here. There are. Quite a few. Celandine. To pick from," the tom called, raising a paw and motioning towards the two mollies for them to join him... unless of course they had already found some, in which case he was... being rather bold and domineering... which he would rather not be; oh dear...

Discomfort soon taking over Snowybreeze as he wondered if he should apologize for his most rude behavior, the gentle giant found himself shaking his mane once more in an attempt to collect himself. Neither seemed like they had found any herbs... and surely finding even more to collect was not bad. Besides, last time he'd been sent on a celandine collecting patrol, neither of his two companions had known what the herb looked like! He himself was only aware because of Cowtuft's meticulous description. So really... maybe he was helping, not being rude? Right? Right!

With this happy thought in mind thoroughly failing to convince him that he was being anything other than a very, very problematic cat - eep - the massive warrior dipped his head, carefully grabbing at some of the fragrant blossoms. Silently, he awaited for the others to finish, ready to follow them back to camp... or lead them if need be! Anything, really, to make up for his very uncalled for behavior from before. Honestly... what had he been thinking? Assuming Silverpaw and Frostpaw needed his help finding anything at all, when this wasn't even his patrol to begin with! It really fascinated him how he never seemed to be swallowed by a random rupture cropping up from the ground at opportune moments such as these. StarClan help him...

It was quite bothersome, really, thirty-something moons and having to follow an apprentice out into the territory for she was still unaware of every corner of these new grounds. But, raised with ignorance and domineering beings all around, she knew far better than to say anything. Stars, no. If this shy apprentice truly knew the way then all she could do was comply and follow - much as she'd rather take the lead, which was evidently not possible if she hardly knew where this 'Sunset Grove' was.

Neither would be any wiser about this lack of knowledge, however, as she confidently limped along the woven path leading to an area quite pleasing to the eye. Scents fresh scents of greenery peeked through the cold air, and for a moment Silverpaw was pleasantly surprised by the way WindClan's new (or at least, new to her) territory looked. Though there was no time for dilly-dallying, she was well aware that her injury was certain to have slowed the patrol down quite a bit - they ought to get down to business.

"Do stay close to, erm, him."
Instructing Frostpaw not to stray far away resulted in an uncharacteristic hesitance and almost apologetic glance Snowybreeze's way as she failed to recall the warrior's name, if she ever knew it. But not one to remain tongue-tied, the silver apprentice let the brief hesitance go as she broke away from the pair to further seek through the lands. After all, although she would never catch herself doubting a well-trained apprentice's abilities - she refused to stoop as low as the rest of them warriors - she would also not be held accountable if Frostpaw got lost, and she knew how to care for herself injured or not.

Meticulously searching the ground for these yellow flowers, her attention was soon picked by the soft-spoken warrior's call, as he appeared to have found what they were looking for. And quite a bit of it, too. Bothered as she felt by how useless she appeared to be during this patrol, time was wearing thin and there were more flowers than a single warrior could carry - presumably. Offering Snowybreeze a curt though polite and thankful nod, she returned to the ground and gathered up what she hoped would be enough. Through her flower-filled maw, she glanced between the pair of felines before speaking.
"We ought to head back right about now;"

'Stay close to, erm, him' glancing at Silverpaw as she spoke, Frostpaw gave a tiny nod of agreement at the instructions. She could probably take care of herself; she wasn't a kit, but still, it was sensible to stay with the older cats than wander off so Frostpaw wouldn't disobey.

Perking her ears at Snowybreeze's call, Frostpaw's gaze drifted to where the tom was indicating to. So that was Celandine? It matched Lightningstorm's description so it must be! Padding over to the yellow flowers, the young she-cat eyed them curiously for a few moments before discreetly watching her two patrolmates to see what they did and mirrored their way of picking just so she wouldn't do it wrong.

After getting a good buncn of Celandine she lifted her head as Silverpaw spoke again. "O-ok" she mewed in her usual nervous tone and looked around at her patrolmates for one of them to lead the way. Last time she had accidentally led them.

Fourshadow lowered himself into a crouch aiming to hit the dazed apprentice side. "you better be ready for a real battle Grubpaw! this is only practice" he said. Grubpaw reluctantly copied what his mentor did. Fourshadow leaped at him with stunning speed. Grubpaw jumped merely missing the tom's strike. He landed onto his feet and turned to swipe Fourshadow on the muzzle. The tabby flinch a bit but rectilated quickly knocking the brown apprentice to the ground. "hay!" Grubpaw yelped "no fair! you're more trained than me". Grubpaw scrambled to his feet only to be swatted in the face with Fourshadow's tail. "Nobody ever said battle was easy" Fourshadow pointed out. He sat down curling his tail around his paws. "that's enough for today" he sighed "better get back to camp". The two toms walked back to camp.

[CLOSED]

it's best for her to stay out of camp, nighthail has decided. she gets antsy, being in the camp too often. her paws start itching, chest starts feeling tight, and she bites back sharp words. her temper is short, she knows this. she doesn't like it. she wants to be soft. once a stray, always a stray, she supposes. she travels through the territory, the leafbare cold chilling both her nerves and her paws. she ends up at sunset grove, tail flicking side to side, slowly to a slow sway as she pads towards an aspen tree that occupies the open patch of woodlands.

pale eyes scan the area; filled with lots of herbs, more than other areas despite the cold weather. she can faintly hear and scent prey somewhere around. she thinks it's safe to assume that windclan is in need of both herbs and prey, but decides she should focus on prey right now. the pile was dangerously low, this morning she believes she saw maybe three voles and only one little lizard. she's not going to let her clan starve, or get close to, that's for sure. it'd definitely be easier with her dear sister, midnightpool, here but nighthail reassures herself that she'll survive.

parting her jaws, the long haired feline starts to track the scent of a mouse. she wastes no time catching the mouse and killing it with a swift bite. digging at the icy-snowy ground, she covers the prey. she scents a rodent - not quite sure what specifically - but she tracks it nonetheless. it leads her to a fat squirrel. dropping into a crouch, she tracks the squirrel and pounces on it, killing it with a swift bite to the neck. paws freezing, nighthail decides she'll catch one more piece of prey, go back to the camp and warm up for a bit, then come back.

she parts her jaws, catching the familiar smell of a rabbit. probably coming out of a tunnel in search of something to eat. poor thing. the black molly finds the rabbit, it's a quick game of cat and mouse before she finally catches it. she collects the rest of the prey she caught, and heads back to camp.

Scalescar followed the herb scent the best he could, it led him to sunset grove, w ile the place was pretty he still had to hurry before his tail got bit by Lightningstorm. His eyes intently searching for goldenrod before finding one, it looked badso he continued not wanting to giveLightningstorm a bad one, because that would still get his tail bit. After searching for a bit he finally found 2 goldenrod that lookedbetter then the last one he found.

He gently grabbed them and kept searching, his eyes still looking intently before he found 3 more that looked good, he grabbed them gently like he did with the first 2. The scarred tom lashed his tail side to side as he looked for more, it was harder then he had thought, with the cold killing herbs and snow burying the hrrbs, he could barely find any that stuck out. After searching for awhile he finally found a couple more goldenrod, once grabbing it he decided to go back to Lightningstorm and give the herbs, Perhaps he could make amends with the young medicine cat, but who knows how itnwill turn out, his paws carried him home as he thought about what he shohld say.

It was a beautiful place, except for the trees and whatnot. The warrior didn't like how much it blocked the open sky, but at least it provided prey and hopefully the herbs they sough.

"So, tansy. Should be easy enough." There weren't many flowers or plants that were still alive, but a few were sprouted up here and there. Flicking an ear in response to Deerfang, the WindClan warrior trotted over to a patch of rather poorly looking flowers near the roots of one of the trees. Bravebird ducked her head down to pluck one from the ground and placed it near her paws, knowing it would be better than nothing. "I... think so, yes," she replied to Lichenpaw after some thought. "...Go ahead and leave at least one. I'm not sure how all of the growing back stuff works, and I don't want to risk an angry Cowtuft or Lightningstorm if we overpick their herbs." She couldn't imagine the big black and white splotched tom ever raising his voice, but his younger trainee looked like she had a mad paw to cuff with.

Trotting over to another nearby tree to sniff around the plants there, Brave froze as her eyes spotted a rather unfortunate find. She lifted her tail upright to signal Deerfang and Lichenpaw to stop. She hoped that was enough to stop them as she started to back away slowly. Porcupine - and a hefty one at that. It seemed to spot her because she noticed how its quills started to raise slowly. The last thing she wanted was to deal with a swollen anything because of a territorial pin cushion.

Spotting what Bravebird saw, a big, snuffling thing with spines on its back, Lichenpaw paused. Was that a porcupine? Lichenpaw had never seen one before, but she'd heard they were prickly little things. So, cautiously, she backed up and flicked an ear to Bravebird and Deerfang, signaling she agreed that maybe they should go home. Good, it seemed like the patrol was ready to go home. Bravebird was readying herself to turn and run when she spotted a patch of flowers that practically glittered. Right near the porcupine was a patch of what appeared to be tansy - and it looked much more healthy than the stalks she had collected. Weighing the pros an cons in her mind, the WindClan warrior figured she could be fast enough to grab at least one or two before the creature retaliated - and she could always snarl to scare it away.

Moving like a snake Brave lunged forward with fangs bared and a loud growl, teeth parted to grab the flowers whole and yank them back. Unlucky for her though the pin cushion didn't seem to scare easily, because it not only raised its spiky quills further, but decided to ram right into her. Pain exploded around her face and made her eyes water. With at least two of the tansy successfully pulled from the ground (albeit a bit torn up), Brave reared back and turned, revealing that several quills now stuck out around her face. "GO! GO!"

Picking up her two flowers Bravebird started to sprint away from the grove, hoping that Deerfang and Lichenpaw were on her tail. There was a burning sensation in her face and while it wasn't the most painful thing she had endured, it definitely hurt to the high stars above. She wanted them out.

Alright, they've waited far too long now. If warriors can't be bothered to show up for patrols, then they shouldn't even be warriors. Twilightstar could demote them all the way down to kit for all Lichenpaw cared! It'd make her life easier. Muttering a curse under her breath, the calico got up and stretched before shooting a glance back at the other warriors in the patrol; Icedapple and what's-his-face, she didn't remember and she didn't care enough to ask. They'd likely never speak again after this anyway.

"I'm done waiting," she said to the other two crossly, "come with me or don't, but I'm not getting yelled at for another warrior's incompetence," with a quick lash of her tail, Lichenpaw exits camp and starts heading to Sunset Grove.

She's never hunted here before, only been to gather tansy for the medicine cats, but hunting's more her speed anyway, especially because she can use more than just her eyes and occasionally her nose (look, it's not her fault she doesn't know what every single herb in the whole world smells like!). Hunting, at least, means she can use more than just her one working eye, so it's kinda an upgrade, honestly.

[roll to scent: 18 - success]
Now that they're here, she breaks away from the group - assuming they even followed her - and begins to scout for any prey around. Honestly, she expected it to be a lot harder, but she scents an ermine almost right away. Immediately, Lichenpaw drops into a crouch, signaling with her tail that she's found something and not to follow her if anyone was even behind her (she heard pawsteps, so she assumed yes but she wasn't about to turn around and confirm). She doesn't think she's ever actually hunted ermine before, but they're little things and quite fast too, so Lichenpaw plans to go into this hunt like she's after rabbit - prioritize speed and a good leap.

[roll to catch: 12 - success]
Her strategy payed out, and, with a good leap and a small chase, Lichenpaw managed to get a claw pinning the weasel down so she could swiftly kill it with one well placed bite. Tail curling up proudly, the calico apprentice picked the thing up and found an area to bury it, feeling really good about her catch.

'Oh, so we're approaching the weird spikey thing, now, are we?' Lichenpaw snarked internally as Bravebird decided to attack the thing. Lichenpaw usually thought of the older warrior as smart but right now... yeah, right now was decidedly not one of those times. And when the porcupine protested the attack, managing to get a hit on Brave's face, Lichenpaw really didn't need to be told twice to get out of there. She clutched her one tansy tighter in her jaw, turned around, and retreated with Bravebird.

Hog Strike
|Windclan warrior| He/Him|
purrks: Beefed up tier 1 - Ultimate predator

Hog Strike gave a nod at the words that the apprentice was done waiting it seemed unfair to have to sit here for ages on end for some warrior. Hog Strike had a moment of hesitation, it seemed reasonable to continue the patrol without them but if they did attend just as the patrol had gone would that be unfair? That hesitation was cut short as he decided that he'd rather follow an apprentice with their head screwed on then wait for a warrior that was too busy to attend a simple patrol. If anything, Lichen Paw was smarter then that warrior already. Hog Strike followed close behind toward Sunset Grove.

Hog Strike strode in at first, then eased into a much more stealthier way of moving, he parted his jaws taking in the scents around him, he could scent a rabbit, vole and the usual scents this area carried along with other distant prey. He focused on one of the scents and crept closer, he wasn't taking any chances with missing prey. At all, he made sure every move was efficient. It wasn't his fault he was worried about fumbling and landing on his face if he leapt. He finally came across a vole, it's musky scent fresh and close. Hog strike took a moment to tense before he sprung out at the vole, killing it. The warmth of it was almost like a savoir from Leafbare's cruelty albeit brief. He perked up with the Vole in his jaws, although he was happy about the catch he wasn't fond of just leaving with a measly vole. Surely he could catch one more thing and help out a little more? Well it wouldn't hurt to do something extra, and if that rabbit he'd scent was still around it'd prove useful to catch it.

(+1 Vole )

Hog strike took a moment to bury the prey carefully, he'll get it after he caught just one more thing. Hog strike eased once more into a more stealthy movement, parting his jaws once more to intake the scents around him, Hog Strike focused on the scents, there was that rabbit again nearby, that'd be a breeze to catch, hopefully, Hog Strike advanced stealthily yet speedily his focus entirely on the sole rabbit. (pun intended ) he once more tensed, every movement was almost entirely instinctual for him. He sprung at the rabbit, and he saw it move, but not quick enough. Hog Strike landed down with a thump trapping the rabbit and biting down to kill it. With the fresh kill in his grip he padded back over to the vole and unburied it, taking that with him as well. Hog strike was more then happy, with a vole and rabbit to bring back and that seemed good enough for him.

(+1 Rabbit )

(Roll to scent: 17- success)
Icedapple scented a mouse, a bit rare but Ok, she’d catch it. Well, not RARE, but she just expected another rabbit or something, she didn’t know exactly what she was expecting honestly. She went into hunters crouch and stalked the mouse, getting ready to pounce.
(Roll to catch: 4- fail)
Icedapple overaimed as she pounced. The mouse scurried off. She sighed. Damn it! She thought to herself.
(Roll to scent: 15- success)
Icedapple scented the air and smelled two mice. They seemed to be scurrying along beside each other so if Icedapple timed it right she should be able to catch 1, if not both mice.
(Roll to catch x2 since there are 2 prey. 11- success and 14- success)
Icedapple pounced, trapping one mouse under one paw and the other under her other paw. Then she gave both of them the killing bite.
(+2 mice)

The winds were calm today, though the ground was still frosted over, annoyingly crunching underpaw. Any rabbit within a mile would have heard her, she bet, and that only irritated Swiftfire further.

But not all could be totally dismal, she decided as she looked back at the sandy colored apprentice tagging along. It had been moons since her last pitiful attempt to train her first apprentice, whom had disappeared shortly after she had taken up their training. It had left the tortoiseshell wondering if she had been too harsh, or too boring. She had even saved them from a rat nest they had foolishly bumbled into.

And yet she had failed.

She wasn't going to do that this time. Fortunately, this apprentice was healthy and smart, from what she had observed, and she paused on the edges of the Sunset grove, observing the undergrowth and trees for a moment, letting Hickorypaw catch up. Sometimes she forgot that her long legs could cover more ground than smaller cat. She wasn't around very many these days...

"We're going to start with one of the most important lessons any cat should know," Swiftfire said, turning her pale yellow gaze onto Hickorypaw, trying to gauge her firm but gentle(?) tone and the apprentice's reaction to it. "Hunting is the perfect practice for a young cat. First, we're going to start with your senses." Swiftfire turned back to the grove.

"Stand next to me and close your eyes. I want you to listen and scent, and tell me what you can smell for prey, and where you think it's coming from. If you aren't familiar with the scent, describe it." She sat down and tucked her long, thick tail around her paws. "We'll make it a game. For every correct scent, I'll subtract a day's worth of elder duty. I'll do it myself." She cocked her head to Hickorypaw.

"Sound good?" Would Hickorypaw find this fun? Was it a good idea? Swiftfire tried to keep the uncomfortable thoughts had bay, but the seeds of doubt had been planted long ago. She hated doubt. It was her enemy. She was so sure of herself with just about anything else, but mentoring? Was this her weakness? Her shortcoming?

No. She couldn't think like that. It was dangerous to think like that. Swiftfire fluffed out her pelt to hide her anxiety, grateful for the gust of wind to give her an excuse to.

Finally . . . freedom. Sweet, sweet, freedom. Hickorypaw lagged behind Swiftfire, golden eyes glued on the winter wonderland surrounding them. This was his first time outside of camp, and frankly, it was nothing like how he expected it to be. Although the wind was lacking today, he still felt the cold bite of leafbare, sending shivers down his spine so intense that he wondered what the point of his pelt was. His whiskers tingled with senses he'd never felt before -- the frozen grass, the crisp air; not to mention the rustling sounds of life all around him. Sensory overload, to put it plainly, but boy oh boy was he loving it (despite his usual lack of expression, his eyes were wide with wonderment). He could stay out here forever.

He didn't realize how much he had dragged behind until the rhythmic crunching of pawsteps came to an abrupt stop. Blinking, Hickorypaw managed to snap back to reality, realizing he was a few tail-lengths away. Ack, she's waiting-

Quickly padding to her side, it wasn't long before she jumped right into today's lesson -- hunting. (She sure doesn't wait, does she?) His ears perked as she explained the rules of today's training, seeming to make somewhat of a game out of it. Wait, did he catch that right? Elder duty will be subtracted for every right answer? He always figured elder duty was for the naughty apprentices, like a measly punishment of some sort. He supposed interracting with elder was horrid or something, based on the way he saw some apprentices act when given elder duty. Odd that she, a busy warrior, would be voluntarily doing elder duties at all. Hmm. "Oookay..." He breathed, shifting his weight awkwardly as she looked down on him. She seemed a little too eager for his responses, making him feel like some experiment. Also, why does she cock her head at him like some curious crow? Maybe he should be more crow-like, too? Crows are very smart, after all.

"I'llllll give it a shot." He eventually replied, shrugging his cluttering thoughts away. He gracefully took a seat beside her and curled his tail tightly around his cold paws, attempting to shield away the cold. Feeling a sense of readiness wash over him, Hickorypaw closed his eyes.

Inhale . . .

[ ACTIVATED PURRKS ; HEIGHTENED PERCEPTION + AGATHA KITTY ]
Exhale . . .

It isn't long before the silence is filled with harmonious birdsong. Wings, fluttering like heartbeats, can be heard from the treetops. The talons scraping above them, little tkk tkk tkks, as one shifts it's tiny feathered frame down nearby branch. "A bird," Hickory whispers, flicking his tail in the direction of it.

The wind is almost vacant, making it nearly impossible for him to catch any scents. His eyes tighten shut as he focuses a little harder. It's . . . vague, but he manages to catch a hint of something warm-smelling. Something similar to the way the fresh-kill pile smells when its really full. He inhales once more, still in zen-mode. He'd never tasted a rabbit, but he knew rabbits were common prey in his homeland, so surely that'd be a good guess. He slowly exhales. "Rrrraaabbit...maybe? If so, it's very faint. Like one hasn't been around for awhile."

He peeks one of his eyes open, side-glancing his mentor. "How am I doing?" He whispers, genuinely curious.

Swiftfire-Warrior-She/Her
Purrk(s): Ultimate Predator

She could tell he was a tad put off by the elder duty reduction. But even as a warrior Swiftfire herself would tend to the elders of the Clan, bringing them fresh bedding and food. It was a way to serve those who had finished their service to the Clan. It wasn't a punishment unless it was given as a punishment; Usually accompanied by a restriction. There was no shame in showing respect and honor to their elders, and even if Hickorypaw didn't understand it just yet, she would lead by an example.

The last incidents within the Clan had disturbed her greatly. The poisonings, the exile, the cats who had callously screeched for blood...the ones who had the minds of rogues. Was this what WindClan was becoming? A clan with no code? No morals? A clan of rogues?
The thought mortified her. If she had been leader....Cowtuft wouldn't have been exiled. A thorough investigation, the sharpest, keenest cats with sound minds and a respect for life would be chosen. She would have taken her time, demoted Cowtuft to an elder, observed the Clan and taken inventory of every herb and prey item.

But she wasn't the leader. She wasn't even deputy. She had no say in Cowtuft's fate, or the fate of the Rogue-Minded, as she was beginning to call them. The cats who showed their desire to kill for mere pleasure, or satisfaction.
She couldn't remember every cat who had spoken up in that regard, but she was going to try her best to steer Hickorypaw clear of them if she could.

The tortoiseshell and white she-cat kept a casual watch around while Hickorypaw began to taste the air and listen. When he mentioned bird, she turned her head briefly, an ear swiveling to pinpoint the direction. Correct. Another scent was found, and she was surprised that he was unfamiliar with it. Rabbit was one of their most common prey, but perhaps some of the less swift warriors were finding it difficult to keep up with their equally as fast prey of choice.

But not her. Swiftfire tasted the air, drawing the rich, even if faint scent of rabbit over her tongue. She felt a tingle of pleasure at the much welcome scent, and she pulled herself to into a crouch, flattening herself to the ground ever so slowly, her tail bopping his flank to signal for him to follow her lead.

"Very good," She whispurred, "But it's also cold. Scents may linger, but their strength will always be questionable. Listen." She pricked her ears, yellow eyes set forward.

It would take more than a few heartbeats, but eventually, a faint rustling sound would be heard, the crackling of frost, and a rhythmic thum-thump-thum of light-footed paws. Swiftfire could not see it yet, but her nose turned immediately to the left a bit, a smile on her face as she whispered once more.
"You're going to catch your first rabbit today," She gave the apprentice a glance from the corner of her eye. "You stay right here. I'm going to loop around and drive it toward you. When it runs right at you, tackle it and go for the back of the neck." She explained, adding, "Remember, only the fastest warriors can catch a rabbit at full sprint, so this is going to be a team effort. Can I trust you to be ready?"

Swiftfire waited for his response, her gaze serious. He was after all, in the presence of one of WindClan's finest hunters, and among the fastest too, if her name was any giveaway. She knew what she was doing when it came to hunting, her very element. But would he trust her? Could he trust her?

Today, she was going to find out.

At least the other two members of this patrol had the sense to follow her, and they'd caught a decent amount of prey already, too, enough to make Lichenpaw's single ermine look pathetic. Yeah, she wouldn't be shown up by a couple of no good warriors - especially when she was so close to her own ceremony. Making note of where she buried the ermine, Lichenpaw began to stalk away a little further, mouth open and low to the ground, trying to sniff out some prey.

[roll to scent: 15 - success]
Pretty quickly, she was able to catch the scent of a shrew and, hoping it was nice and fat (or at least not skin and bone), the calico tracked it, weaving through dead, tall grasses and over frozen ground. She was pretty confident in her ability to catch the thing, so, once she had it in her line of sight, the molly creeped ever closer, inch by inch.

[roll to catch: 12 - success]
[roll to scent: 14 - success]
She was right not to be worried about catching it. In fact, it was the most boring, mundane catch ever that she really had nothing to add to her thoughts about the thing. Deciding she wanted to catch at least one other piece of prey, Lichenpaw quickly buried the little shrew and moved on again, trying to scent something else. It was lucky that all the prey didn't seem to be hiding, because not long after she set out, she quickly scented mouse. It wasn't even that far away, perhaps no more than two fox lengths, and nibbling on some seed on the ground, distracted.

[roll to catch: 3 - fail]
Maybe she'd been too cocky about her skills, too certain she was going to catch it, but the moment she took a step toward the mouse, its ears perked up and it darted into a hole in the ground right next to it. Lichenpaw gave chase, but by the time she drew closer, it was already too far away and she couldn't reach her paw into the little hole to grab for it. Humility is a good trait to have, she has to remind herself, when her tail subconsciously starts flicking angrily. Between the three of them, they have enough prey to bring back, she reminds herself, and takes a deep breath before digging up both her shrew and her ermine.

After some minutes she says to the other two with her, "I think we've got enough between the three of us for now," She wants to call the other two useless, but, well, they'd caught more than her. Still, it's not a competition, even though she really, really wants it to be. She'd have lost, but it would've made this fun. (Seriously, why are these warriors letting her boss them around like she's the patrol lead? Are they trying to inflate her ego?) "Collect your prey, let's head back," with that said, the apprentice picks up her spoils and starts heading toward camp.

Pride swelled in the young apprentice's chest, curling the crease of his muzzle into a mini smirk. Hickorypaw had dreamt of this moment, many times over, wondering how good he would be at the basic warrior skills -- hunting, tracking, combat, herbology, etcetera; imagining he'd one day be an honorable member of WindClan. Well, if that still meant anything anymore. He was no stranger to the recent incidents, though he preferred to play the fool in order to escape the cruel reality. It's why he was so adamant to get out of camp. Who would want to live in immoral chaos like that? Sure, it was exciting, sometimes, watching arguments and accusations get tossed around like a game of mossball, but the excitement would always eventually die down to exhaustion and a headache. He wasn't quite sure how some cats kept going. He admired Twilightstar's level head during it all, aspiring to be just like her in these types of situations.

As his mentor's voice cut through his thoughts again, Hickorypaw's ears perked once more, opening both eyes now. A thumping caught his attention at the exact moment Swiftfire did, his eyes snapping in the direction of the rabbit -- to the left. "You're going to catch your first rabbit today," Swiftfire murmurs to him, the words oozing like sweet honey into his seashell-pink ear canals. His blood is rushing now. This is the moment he's been waiting for. Adrenaline makes his tail tip twitch, urging him to prematurely leap towards the rabbit, but the weight of his paws hold him back. He must be patient. "Okay," He replies to her offer quietly, licking his chops, "I'm ready."

She could practically feel his eagerness. deep inside, she felt a spark of pure warmth, a memory resurging. Her first hunt. She had been told she would succeed with no shortage of the same confidence she had said the same to Hickorypaw. Only that her mentor had been distracted at the last moment, failed to give her the signal, and the next thing she had known, she had been in the rabbit rodeo, clinging for life to the back of a buck hare. After some panicked scrambling and bucking, both she and the rabbit had fallen into a sinkhole. It had broken its neck on landing, and she had a torn claw and a twisted paw from the ordeal.
Swiftfire felt that her own apprentice wouldn't have nearly as complicated a first hunt. He was a smart one, and she appreciated that deeply.

She quickly ensured he was in a proper ambushing crouch, gently adjusting his paws and stance, "Keep your strength in your back legs." She murmured quietly, "It's going to be more worried about me chasing it before it is going to realize you're waiting for it. You may get only one good opening.." With the last bit of advice, Swiftfire turned around and slipped seamlessly beneath a low-branching elderberry bush, her black and orange pelt acting almost as a useful invisibility coat beneath the bushes.

It would feel like an eternity had passed by, even for Swiftfire. Time always seemed to slow down around her when she was hunting. Through the branches and leaves, she watched for the rabbit, any signs of exit or entry. She would need to corral the rabbit after all, herd it right to Hickorypaw. She paused as the rabbit finally came into view. A plump doe, young too. Swiftfire froze in place, eyeing the way the rabbit had come from.
Moments later, she would be positioned under the roots of an oak, behind the rabbit's left flank. The rabbit was oblivious, which was perfect.

Swiftfire sprang from the roots, and the rabbit jumped, flipped and stumbled upon landing, allowing Swiftfire just a moment to slash her claws over the rabbit's right leg, wounding it and then she was sprinting back and forth, blocking the rabbit's zig-zagging efforts to escape.
If Hickorypaw could see, it was like a weird game of tag, as his mentor was a black and orange streak from one side of the grove to the other, corraling the rabbit exactly where she wanted and needed it to go. Realizing it was weakening and its burrow was unavailable due to Swiftfire's herding, the rabbit made a mad dash for its life.

Right where Hickorypaw would be waiting. Swiftfire loped behind on her long legs, darting sharply to cut the rabbit off if it tried to divert from its fateful choice. There wasn't going to be a chance for it now...

Runs through the territory had always relaxed Fallownose. This time, Sunset Grove was his destination. His long legs allowed him to reach his destination quicker than most of his Clanmates would be able to, and he was panting softly when he got there. Slowing to an easy trot, Fallownose frowned slightly as he noticed how stale WindClan scent was. It seems like no one had been out here for a while.

Fallownose slowed his pace even more, shaking off the flecks of snow that stuck to him as he began to brush his pelt along the trees to leave his scent. It wouldn't due for outsiders, much less another Clan (yes, he was thinking about RiverClan specifically), to think that WindClan wasn't using this patch of territory.

About half-way through the grove, Fallownose paused when he saw an icicle hanging off one of the lower branches of the cluster of trees. He felt a pang in his heart as he remembered the stories Crowdapple and Pigeonear would tell him as a kit about playing in leaf-bare, licking icicles, making snow-cats. He hoped that they were still alive out there and would oneday return, but Fallownose knew it was unlikely. They were old, and if they got stuck out in this weather it was unlikely they had managed to survive.

Shivering, the deputy was pulled from his thoughts as he realized he had been standing and staring at the icicle, allowing the cold to seep through his pelt and chill him to the bone. He shook himself again, this time to warm himself, no matter how slightly, instead of shaking out any debris or snow.

Fallownose was content to shove the memories away and continue on with rubbing his scent on every possible tree, but his yellow-amber gaze drifted back to the icicle. Maybe he could make a new memory, a happier one, even if his mothers weren't here with him.

Rearing up onto his hindpaws, Fallownose braced his forepaws on the trunk of the tree so he was eye-level with the icicle before opening his jaws and licking it. COLD! VERY COLD! INSTANT REGRET!

He pulled back, fully intending lick his lips until his mouth warmed back up, but he couldn't. His tongue was stuck. To the icicle. Well, this was awkward. He would get unstuck, right? It had to melt, he couldn't be stuck like this forever, much less have a Clanmate stumble upon him in such an awkward situation!!

Estelle [going to make quick posts in each landmark, so that way you don't have to wait for me to make replies and Silverpaw would have visited each landmark]

As soon as Silverpaw gave her consent to a quick tour, Leechscar set out without a word. A shiver had his pelt twitching uncontrollably as he entered the snow once again. He internally complained about the snow and cold the entire walk to Sunset Grove. The trees had lost their leaves, but the towering trees before him still bothered him endlessly. He was so used to the wide open land that was WindClan's territory that dealing with trees and woodland was irksome.

"This Sunset Grove. When it's not as cold as ShadowClan's heart, it's a good place for hunting, all sorts of prey hide around the trees and nooks. It's also a good place for herb hunting in the warming season." Leechscar explained briefly, ears raised to see if Silverpaw had any questions before he moved on to the next place.

Without further word, much like her mentor, Silverpaw followed the grumpy feline. She was beginning to think Leechscar wasn't as foolish as most warriors, good for him, and perhaps he even had a sense of humour? She held back a slight snicker at his comment on ShadowClan's heart, recomposing herself with a clearing of her throat.
...He was right, though. The trees were strange on WindClan territory indeed, but this wasn't the first time she'd seen Sunset Grove having visited it previously on a herb patrol - but it served her well to familiarise herself with these areas a second time. The trees made it a little more difficult to navigate. Not having any questions, she followed him to the next landmark.

Confused about whatever was happening with the leader of the patrol, clover takes it upon herself to lead Ravenpaw out onto the territory all on clover's lonesome. Bouncing along she hums herself a tune, keeping an eye out for any kind of movement amongst the foliage. What were they supposed to even be doing? Hunting? Patrolling? Maybe clover missed that part, head somewhere up in the clouds. Nonetheless she turns to stare at the apprentice tagging along behind her quick gait, head tilting off to a side.

"Soooo, here we are! I think, anyway. You have any idea what we got sent out here for? I'm gonna guuuuess... Hunting!"

Firestorm, not feeling too hot (she threw up along the way), took a second to catch up with Cloverhoney. Silly her, she should’ve been keeping up! ”I’m here!” she informed the other warrior, oddly out of breath. Goodness, this pregnancy stuff was taking a lot out of her.

Composing herself, she gave Cloverhoney a bright smile ”Alright~! Yes, we will be hunting~!” she said with a purr. Then, with a bit of a mischevious grin, she winked at the younger cat ”I’ll have you know I’m the best hunter in the clan, sick or not, so try to keep up~!” And with that, she turned and bounded away (huge mistake, the nausea was coming back in waves) in the search for some prey.

Seems like little Ravenpaw got lost somewhere along the way but Firestorm was here! She looked super messed up but hey she was here and that was enough for clover! A challenge is issued and the young molly can't help the grin that spreads across her muzzle. The best hunter, huh? Clover would see about that! Though she would like to play with the other warrior when she was feeling at her best, but eh, whatever! Time to go hunting and show off her skills!

[ Cloverhoney rolled a 6 to hunt prey. ]

Okay so maybe today wasn't clover's day. So what? Everyone had an off day every once in a while! Was it the way she was bouncing along through the brush? Or maybe it was the way she was humming to herself as she moved. Nonetheless, she couldn't seem to find a dang thing out here today! And the weather was decent and everything! Ugh, c'mon Cloverhoney, get your head in the game! Try again!

[ Cloverhoney rolled a 19 to hunt prey. ]

That was more like it! Thank you dice-- or, uh, well thank you fate! Yeah, that was it! Grinning wide, she stalks up upon a hare. A sizable prey animal... Truly a wonderful catch if she can manage it... Tail lashing behind clover as she creeps up on the blissfully unaware creature, her pounce is beautiful. Truly like she was flying with all the grace of a swan taking off from a pond! Landing upon it with claws extended, it's life is swiftly cut short and the corpse is buried to be retrieved later.

This was gonna be easy peasy!

Firestorm was no stranger when it came to not feeling well, however, she’d never actually had to hunt under these conditions before. Despite the queasy feeling in her stomach, she was not going to allow herself to be beat by some incumbent challenger. She was the best hunter in WindClan and she was going to show it.

Heading off in a different direction than Cloverhoney, the orange tabby quickly picked up the scent of her favorite prey – rabbit. Grinning to herself, she carefully tracked the scent to a clump of grass. Remaining hidden, she dashed out and pounced on the lagomorph. Narrowly avoiding getting kicked in the stomach, she managed to deliver a bite to the back of it’s neck – ending it’s life instantly. Panting heavily, she got up and looked down at the prey she caught. She hadn’t been anticipating for it to be that big. ”Bloody hell, it’s a good thing that thing didn’t kick me. Spots’d killed me,” She wheezed, struggling to keep the bile rising within her throat down. She needed more. Surely Cloverhoney would’ve caught more than just one piece of prey, and she would not be losing.

Covering the her catch up, Firestorm left it behind in search of some more prey. She made the executive decision that she would be ignoring any other rabbit smells and going after smaller prey. After all, she needed to do her best to protect the budding lives inside of her and couldn’t just be taking risks like that. What would she do if she took a kick to the stomach? Stars alive, she’d never be able to face Lightningstorm after that.

It didn’t take long for her to catch the scent of vole as she walked. Oh~ Spots was going to be so happy with her when she brought this back. Whiskers twitching with amusement at the sight that surely awaited her when she made her way back to camp, she tracked the smell until she could hear the skittering of the creatures. Yes, creatures. There were multiple, three or four maybe? Taking a deep breath, she focused from her positon in the grass before lashing out to catch them. When all was said and done, she was only able to snag two of them before the other escaped. Well, these would do. Killing them quickly, she took the broken bodies to the rabbit she caught earlier and went out looking for more.

One more prey item, and she’d have won for sure she decided. Stepping away from her catches, she didn’t make it too far before she abruptly released the contents of her stomach. Pregnancy was vile stuff, pain in the arse as Spots would call it. Why had she wished for this? Panting, she shook her head at the thought. Being a mother had been her greatest wish since she was a mere kit and she should instead be glad that her wish was granted (presumably) by the stars. ”Focus Firestorm,” She hissed to herself, gritting her teeth as another wave of nausea washed over her ”This is so you can have a family with Lightningstorm. Get it together.”

Pep talk out of the way, the fiery furred lass walked faster. She was losing her edge and she could feel it. She needed to get this done and get back to camp, and soon. Her grasp on reality and just where she was putting her paws was slipping. Some time passed, and she wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but by the time she came to, she had a dead mouse in her jaws and she was on her way back to the rest of her cache. In the back of her mind she could vaguely recall sinking her teeth into it, but outside of that, things were very hazy. Not good.

When she finally got to it, she slipped the body of the rabbit on top of her back, grunting at its weight. It was almost as big as she was!! Reaching down, she grabbed the rest of her catch and made her way back to where she had left Cloverhoney. ”I win.” She mewed softly, all bluster and theatrics long since gone as she led the way back to camp. This. Felt. Terrible.

Rather then ducking underground immediately and traversing through the tunnels to get to the hunting ground Crowtooth had forsaken his usual habit and instead stuck above for a bit. Partially this was as a favor to cats less experienced with the underground and potentially leery of the dark, but in part it was a distant worry about the damn minks. Not too long ago he'd been ducked below the falls fully confident only to lead his patrol right into a shredder of claws with no warning.

He was not keen to repeat this here.

If every time anyone ducked below was a risk until the mink were gone it was best to limit that risk right? Or maybe they were only below the falls and everywhere else was safe. Problem was they just didnt know enough yet, and prey still needed to be hunted.

Arriving at the grove the tom delayed the patrol from entering just for a moment so he could inspect the entrance, checking thoroughly for any sign of danger and finding none. Wonderful! Time to proceed.
"Alrighty everyone today we're doin' somethin' special. I found us a groundhog burrow! Theyre funky little critters, basically large gophers an' 'bout the size o' a rabbit, who live 'n groups! So while I don' tend ta find 'em often theyre the best when I do.

We're gonna go down an' do a wipe. 'f yer quick just dodge their bite an' front paws ta kill 'em, they're not agile or fast (an' 't doesn' do much damage 'f ya get got too, the bite just stings like a nettle). But 'f ya need help just shout an' someone can distract 't fer ya.

Lets get at em!"
Explanation done Crowtooth ducked in, scent marking the walls as he did as a sort of breadcrumb trail for the patrol to follow in and out if they did get lost. Groundhogs really did not require a ton of effort or explanation at all, they were fat large gophers who could never waddle away quick enough to escape. Finding them was most of the effort as their burrows were well hidden but with that done this group would promise to be a feast with minimal issue.

Almost as proof of his words the tom almost immediately encountered a groundhog, which had but a moment to let out an alarm bark at the cat before it was killed, turning the heads of the other groundhogs in the burrow. Poor stupid food rodent, at least it was quick.

...Groundhogs. Hm. Winterpaw hadn't seen any alive groundhogs before, only the ones on the Windclan freshkill pile. Crowtooth had described them as "funky", so he could only wonder what that meant before he went into the burrow to find out for himself. Winterpaw followed in after Crowtooth once a few moments had passed, and quickly spotted a...well, how the warrior had described them was quite accurate.

He veered off the path to corner the groundhog into a little side chamber, swiftly unsheathing his claws to slash at the animal, dodging all of its attempts to bite and claw him back. Eventually he pinned the groundhog down and slashed across it's neck, staining his snow white pelt with blood. Not like Winterpaw cared at all, he was just satisfied with his catch for the patrol. ...Now, how was he supposed to carry this thing along with him...?

He delayed their entrance; or more accurately, undoubtedly, he was checking the safety of these tunnels, if anything because of the minks. Silverrose couldn't help indistinctly trying to glance over the tunneller's shoulder as he did the quick sweep, half expecting thorough and lengthy instructions as soon as he was done. But, much to her surprise, his words were short and straight to the point. Stepping back to give some space, a silver ear gave a flick of acknowledgement before her head followed in a subtle nod. Groundhogs; sounded like silly little creatures. This certainly would be of interest and good practice.

The newly named warrior did not hesitate before ducking into the burrow behind Crowtooth, tail level behind her and steps careful as the light slowly faded away and her other senses took charge. Her whiskers gave a light twitch, ever so lightly brushing against a wall, silently noting the scent trail Crowtooth was leaving behind. And soon enough, she could already hear alarmed barks as the first two catches were made - shortly followed by a catch of her own. Scattering about, though not quick enough to escape the warrior (...that doesn't sound too bad), her claws sunk into the rabbit-sized creature with one swift movement, its life quickly fading away. That was one - and her eyes were already seeking the next target.

Groundhogs. Deadmoon couldn't claim to be familiar with the critters, and was mildly concerned by Crowtooth's description of them as funky. What exactly did funky entail, in a prey animal? Did it mean they were more likely to fight back? It was a horrible cowardly thought, but Deadmoon didn't particularly feel like getting attacked by a rabbit-sized rodent today. Or ever, actually. And the mention of swiftness being required....it made her a bit nervous. It would be fine, she was sure, there was no way they would be as dangerous as a cat. It would just be a bit embarrassing if she got injured and needed Lightingstorm's attention on a hunting patrol, regardless of their quarry's size. Her slight, stupid nerves delayed Deadmoon's entrance into the burrow until after Silverrose and Winterpaw had already gone ahead, and then she realized as a warrior she really ought to hurry up.

Stars, and Fallownose was with them too. There went any of HER hopes to lead patrols in the future. With a small shake of her head, a physical manifestation of her desire to clear her thoughts for groundhog hunting, Deadmoon followed the patrol's younger members into the tunnels. It was almost warmer within them, and the air felt a bit moister on her tongue. Regardless she was able to pick up a clear trail of rodent-scent, unpursued by her clanmates, and follow it. It had taken a side tunnel of some sort, a narrower one, as her whiskers informed her in place of her eyes. Evidently, one with a dead end of sorts too, as it was facing her and showing no sign of retreat when Deadmoon came into close quarters with the groundhog for the first time. It seemed willing to fight, and with no small amount of reticence she approached it, claws unsheathed.

Lunging forward with as much speed as she could muster, Crowtooth had said to be fast after all, the molly was able to secure a tooth-hold on it's neck. Unfortunately, this brought her face into close proximity with it's gnashing teeth and she winced violently, jerking away as a nibble was taken out of the scruff of her neck. Fortunately it was not long for the world after that, slumping to the ground as she kept a bit of distance. It had been something of simultaneous attacks, though hers had involved more force and been in a more critical location than that of the groundhog. With her prey downed she did her best to heft it up off of the ground to an extent, pulling it back towards the main part of the tunnel. If there were any still in the area after her patrolmates had done their work she could always try another one, but for now she was content with her large prize. Swiftfire had shown but Scalescar had not, and after some time in waiting in silence a single shared look between the two was enough to move them on to the patrol without the tom.

Though, for a change, eventually the silence had to be broken. "Fair warnin' we encountered mink last time I was here. It was only two an' we're pretty sure they were here huntin' incidentally an' dont spend time here so we should be fine. But prolly best not ta drop yer guard." Even if he viewed the other molly as foolish the tom would be damned if a clanmate got hurt on his watch because he was being petty. Especially not to the damn mink and the tunnelers tattered ears pinned at the thought of the vermin, muttering a "Stars damned pests are everywhere, too many ta deal wit' an' keep yer sanity intact." under his wheezy breaths.

Still, as warning stated Crowtooth was pretty sure the mink were just at the grove to hunt the same prey the patrol was coincidentally hunting, and did not dwell in the area so there was no stopping the pursuit of herbs here.

If for no other reason then the area was good for herbs, evident by the lingering cluster of broom the tom spotted. It was obviously fading with the season, barely hanging on, so Crowtooth fleeced it bare with no hesitation, frowning as it still didnt come up with a full mouthful and that he'd need to look elsewhere.

Swiftfire
------------

It seemed that their patrolmate was a no show. This caused her to grow irritated, and after that silent exchange, she trailed after Crowtooth.

She was more than happy to keep the silence. But then the old jabber-jaw started going on again, and the fur on her spine lifted. Swiftfire liked silence, but she still had a fair few opinions about the course of action the Clan was on board with taking.

"Tell it to someone who doesn't use the space between their ears," Swiftfire spat angrily. "Blindly following orders because there's a chance for death, is how fools get killed or used." She swung her orange and black head around to glare at Crowtooth.
"And I frankly don't care who is related to who," Swiftfire added, remembering Crowtooth's hard defense of that jerk Leechscar, "That doesn't give them permission to tear others down without any actual constructive input." Swiftfire sneered, "I never called anyone a coward. I called the idea of running to ShadowClan as cowardly. I think its foolish and cowardly to run to the next Clan over just because we have a problem. I don't trust them, and anyone who does, who agrees that this is the ONLY way we can resolve our little mink issue, is a fool. But instead of asking what ideas I might have had, I was shut down, berated, told to go 'take a walk' to cool off. Not ONE of you asked if I actually HAD any real ideas, which I did, but forget it."

Swiftfire had stopped walking, lashing her tail. "It isn't the only way we can solve this. But if you want to put your faith in ShadowClan, be my guest. I'll be watching for them to turn around and make you all look like the fools you are."
She could care less about some overgrown weasels. She took down bigger prey than a mink on a daily. Today, their prey was herbs. Less exciting, but whatever. So with her piece said, Swiftfire pointedly moved to the far side of the grove to look for herbs. She wasn't an herb cat, and she had no idea what they were looking for. Cobwebs, sure, but since The old grump had whatever broom was covered, Swiftfire turned her attention to finding cobweb. She was mildly successful, finding a narrow crag but the inside was simply loaded with old webbing.

With a heavy sigh, Swiftfire set about to her task, using her claws to fish what she could out.

Oh boy we were doing this now? Ok.
The tom remained silent through the rant, internally sighing as his ears dipped less in an angry way and more of a slightly annoyed one.

He listened, took in Swiftfires words, and once he was done bluntly stated "Bein' so blindly terrified o' shadowclan yer unwillin' ta use their forces in a fight against an opponent is completely cowardly. Its completely foolish an' dumb ta not take advantage o' the deal they will take advantage of, regardless if we do or dont do the same." he waited a beat for that to sink in and, lighter tacked on "Now I dont believe that (kinda, Ill expand), but can ya see how callin' someones ideas cowardly can feel the same as callin' them that?"

Crowtooth knew the first statement was biting and mustve stung, that was the point especially how blunt and cuttingly he said it but he hoped it at least shone a light on how the other side of the argument took things.

"See the problem here aint yer ideas Swiftfire, 'ts how and where ya said em. I know ya may view 't that way and ya may be half right but how ya pitched thin's was not constructive. And Ill admit, I among others had a bad reaction ta that, thats on us. But ya assumed we forget the past an' you didnt and thats patently untrue, an' ya lashed out wit' insults fer it."

As it always did when he thought of it the large and deep bitemark on Crowtooths throat ached, no matter how long he'd been living again there was no escaping that Dawnstar had killed him and even below a new calm the toms rage boiled. His life again for a chance to end her for good, even now.
"She killed me, she killed Twi, she and them killed an' hurt so many and no time can change that. I cant tell ya much but Swiftfire I was there fer the talks about the alliance an' its not forgotten in a flight o' foolishness. We aint blind.

But stars Im tired of loss Swiftfire, aint you?"
Sometimes the tom felt like an elder already, with how much his soul ached.

"I can explain the thoughts behind the decision if ya want, but fer now Ill tell why ya were shut down so hard. Ya came in wit' anger, wit' insults and wit'out an 'even' plan. Ya had one, sure, but ya had a plan made missin' key details an' one ya werent capable of hearin' constructive criticisms wit' either.

Both options are foolish an' cowardly, we're aware but actin' like we're not is frustratin', frustration that burst out as anger. One insult flung means more ta follow an' even now ya dont recognize the flaws in yer own plan. More frustration.

Yer plan has some merit, but so does ours an' had the insults stayed inside or everyone had the maturity ta let 't go meshin' them mightve happened. But frustration an' tempers an' we couldnt. All o' us shoulda taken that walk really."

Taking a walk was never bad advice the tom was finding and he was increasingly trying to put his prey were his mouth is and just go when mad. Admittedly he hadnt always been successful in doing so however.
For now though he tried to do so, to cool the building frustration by nosing through the foliage and turning up some more yellow bells and plucking them, and eventually spoke again.

"Continue ta be mad 'f ya want but Im too tired an' am done. We can either finish this in silence or try an' meet in the middle seeing the issues o' both plans and makin' the best o' both we can an' approaching Twilightstar wit' that together."

Things had gone well so far, not that the tom had expecting the patrol to go badly given all they were doing was beating up some oversized gophers. Seriously Groundhogs were just rabbit sized gophers Crowtooth did not understand why some prey had larger versions like mice-rats, rabbits-hares and of course gophers-groundhogs that acted the same but was a totally different creature.

Tangent aside he supposed something couldve gone wrong in that cats could panic at the sudden confinement and dark of entering the tunnels, but it hadnt occurred.

Not needing to step in and help anyone Crowtooth focused on trying to snag a second catch.
They were on high alert now, barking and trying to escape or bite at the patrol and the tom focused on the one closest to him that'd backed itself against a wall. A smart tactic for a stupid rodent, but not enough.

It took a couple of tries to get at the animal without being bitten, as it kept snapping with its weird little teeth, but eventually he managed able to slam a large paw down on its head. There! 'Threat' neutralized and now it was easy to chomp down on its neck for a killing blow.
If they kept up with the current pace even with a couple more groundhogs they could be done.

"Alright ya'll! Try an' nab another 'f ya can but lets wrap up an' head back! Anyone who needs a paw just ask!"

Deadmoon could hear Crowtooth's voice echoing through the tunnels, cutting through the panicky squeaks and squeals of the groundhogs enough that he was clearly audible. It seemed they were expected to go after another one, and then it would be time to leave. Sounded good to her, she at least had an idea of what to do this time. Not that she was likely to execute her plan flawlessly, that would be too much to expect from her. Though there was at least another groundhog relatively close to her little, offshoot tunnel, so there was something to practice on. Leaving her previous prize safely behind (at least she didn't THINK there was anything that would steal it down here. She certainly hoped not) she strode out into the main tunnel, sniffing intently at the walls and floor in an effort to determine what side paths the remaining groundhogs might have taken.

Without the aid of sight, it took a bit longer than she might have liked, but she was eventually reasonably confident that a groundhog was nearby and moved forward a bit more swiftly. A swift padding step, and then a small jog. Finally, a lunge, as she had managed to select a long enough tunnel that the 'hog didn't have a chance to pack itself into a corner as a form of protection. Her 'plan' to avoid its teeth wasn't even necessary! It almost swung its head around to bite her paw as she pinned it down with her weight, but she smacked at its nose and managed to swat its head away. From that point, it was simply a matter of moving quicker with her teeth than it could, and in that, she succeeded. This had gone shockingly well, and with a small smile on her maw Deadmoon hauled her second catch back towards the main group of the patrol. (+1 groundhog) Lillith Rani zozelen Estelle

Swiftfire
----------

She wanted to ignore Crowtooth and his jabbering. So what if how she said it mattered? If cats got upset, then that spoke volumes of itself. About them. She had her fair share of loss too. But her ears flattened after a moment, and she turned her face over her shoulder, glaring at Crowtooth from the corner of a pale yellow eye.

"I didn't get angry until someone began hissing and spitting nonsense at anyone who spoke up." Swiftfire growled. "Don't try and pretend I was the first and only cat there who spoke up or said something out of line." Swiftfire turned back to the crack in the stone, pulling out another wad of cobweb. "So maybe I could have worded it a little better, but beating around the bush isn't my style; I'm not afraid to voice my raw thoughts, even if it isn't appreciated by those less comfortable with a blunt attitude." The cobweb was set beside the first bundle, and she eyed the crack for a moment, deciding that there wasn't much else to take.

The subject of the alliance came up, and Swiftfire sighed. "Alliances shift and change like the wind depending on what interests the leaders decide to pursue. I don't trust any alliance, because it's never going to end well when it does. What does ShadowClan get out of it? We might not be ready to destroy each other, but I'm not a mousebrain; Anything they do to help us will have some cost...and what if that cost IS the lives we wanted to save from the minks?" Swiftfire looked at Crowtooth fully, her gaze clouded with worry and heavy thoughts. "Cats in these Clans are far more likely to kill one of us than a bunch of swarming weasels....We've had...one death from minks, right? And how many were killed at the paws of Dawnstar alone. That's one cat...."

Swiftfire frowned deeply, idly pawing at the cobwebs. "I'm not the most in touch with my heart and...sensitive side, I know. But no one has any right to say I don't care about the lives of my Clanmates. I would die for you, right here, right now, and I'd hope, no, I'd trust that you or any of my Clanmates would do the same if such a situation came up. It's not about being a martyr, or a mouse-brain. It's because I love WindClan, and I have cats I want to keep safe too, and I made a promise to StarClan that I would..."

Blue eyes flashed in her mind, and she squeezed her eyes shut to banish the image of the once-beautiful visage. "One of them had half his face ripped off by those minks, but you don't see me going crazy and trying to take them all on by myself, do you? It's a lot easier to make a plan when there's support, and openness, but being shut down the way I was..."
Swiftfire took a slow, ragged breath, "You don't know what my real idea or plan was. Should have given me a chance when it mattered. Now, all that matters is making sure we don't regret the course of action Twilightstar has chosen." Swiftfire swept her tail around, snatching up the bundles of cobweb into her fur.

"So in the mutual best interest of our differing opinions, we better get this back to Lightningstorm..." Swiftfire stalked past Crowtooth in the direction of camp.

Winterpaw's ears twitched when he heard Crowtooth's call from further along in the tunnel, instructing the patrol to finish up soon. The warrior did say he could call for help if needed, but Winterpaw could probably pick up the groundhog by himself. Maybe the fur was just making it look bigger then it really was.

(winterpaw rolls a 5 for groundhog carrying!)

...Or not. After about half a minute of trying to drag the groundhog along, Winterpaw looked around for anyone who could possibly help him with it, still trying to carry the groundhog all the while. Winterpaw wasn't going to give up, this was his catch and he should be able to honorably carry it back to camp too. Was there a way for apprentices to train strength instead of skill? Maybe he should ask Applefrost about some sort of lifting regiment.

He tried right? Crowtooth really hoped that the fact that he'd tried had counted for something. But really, there was no talking to those who just didnt want to listen.

The tom had blatantly admitted that he thought both sides were in the wrong to some degree, in actions and theory. He'd expanded on that he didnt trust shadowclan to uphold their alliance, but why he'd thought them the lesser evil considering the situation. The tom had not said that he didnt think Swiftfire didnt care at all, he'd be foolish to even think so. And he'd left the door open for both of them to bridge the distance to join plans that covered for both flaws of thinking. Swiftfire was walking away from that it seemed, turning that down flat.

What more could he do?

Crowtooth sighed as he dusted the lingering snow off of another patch of broom, fleecing it until he could carry no more of the herb. It was impossible to tell if the failure of this rested on Swiftfires shoulders really, for all he wished it was that simple. The tom knew he wasnt the best with words, had only now been trying to use them in the clunky way most apprentices learned through when first trying to be diplomatic. He couldve easily chosen wrong here and this could be his failure. Or no ones. The tom wasnt wise enough to tell.

What he did know was when some things were a lost cause, and for now he'd drop it no more capable of bridging this gap as he was drawing water out of a stone.

So instead with tired sad eyes he nodded, taking the opportunity that the herbs in his mouth provided to not speak, and they departed.

Her first catch cast aside, the silver feline's eyes had already locked on the second groundhog. Through the fray she noted Crowtooth's words, eyes narrowing as she stalked closer - or tried to, at the very least. With the rabbit-sized creature skittering about and biting her way at every chance, Silverrose swiftly moved from left to right, to right to left, avoiding tooth and claw at every moment until she got close enough to jump on top of the creature, claws sinking into its back to hold it down and deliver a killing bite. Quite unceremoniously, a rogue groundhog making its escape rushed past the newly named warrior, nearly sending her sprawling to the ground if it wasn't for the painful catch of her paws, ouch! Huffing dirt from her mouth (which did, in fact, touch ground), Silverrose broke into a chase within the confined area, quickly nipping at it until it was cornered and, eventually, killed. Hmpf. That's what it got for pushing her to the ground.

Things had been going really well! As the tom collected his two groundhogs he could hear the other warriors catch their own second and Winterpaw try and haul his one off. That was seven groundhogs total, windclan would be eating well for at least a week!

Yes he was all too satisfied as he padded out, leaving a clear scent trail for the others to follow him out and stepped into the light.

Only to find himself nose to nose with a mink.

The mink blinked, not expecting a cat where it'd come to hunt groundhogs, the cat blinked not expecting a mink when he'd only come here to do the same. There was a long moment of silence as both froze before a breeze fluttered passed and all hell broke lose.

Crowtooth dropped his haul in under a second and launched himself over with a loud snarl, bowling the beast over even as it reared up to claw at him.
"MINK! SOMEONE COME AN' HELP ME DAMMIT!"
The two creatures were a tornado of fur claws and fangs as the large scarred tom eventually managed to slam it against a tree, paw shoving its snapping head away as claws dug into the minks face. With Crowtooth using him body to occupy it and keep it in place as long as someone could dodge around the flying claws it'd be a clear shot to the neck for a killing blow. A move the tom himself could not make without earning a bite he did not want to take at this time.

Luckily from what he could tell looking around the mink had been alone, probably here for the groundhog colony too, and would be a pretty easy kill given they managed to outnumber it so severely and quickly had the upper paw on it.
Honestly this could be a good thing for the group, Crowtooth wanted a mink pelt for a.... plan he'd pitched to Twilightstar recently and had also wanted to check if mink could be eaten to turn this bad situation to one with a slight benefit to the clan at least.

As Crowtooth's call for help echoed down the tunnel Winterpaw instantly dropped what he was doing, running over to see what was going on. Minks, Crowtooth had said? When he got out of the tunnel and to where the black-furred warrior was wrestling with a... cat-sized, long and brown... thing, assumedly the mink, Winterpaw quickly ran to attack the animal it looked like Crowtooth was struggling to hold down.

(winterpaw rolls a 5!)

Although he did manage to slash it's throat, somehow the mink got a paw out from under Crowtooth and slashed Winterpaw across the chest. "Ngk," he hissed in a strangled voice, stumbling to take a step back. The cut wasn't even that bad, it just burned, but he could keep going.

(-1 groundhog!)

That sound. Everything was so peaceful. Everything was going so smoothly. So easily. But of course, something had to go wrong. Crowtooth had gone, his yowl had reached her ears and in a flash of silver fur the warrior dropped the groundhog she had caught. Blindly rushing through the dark tunnel the horrid scent of that horrid beast filled her nostrils. Not. Today. Large leaps pulled at the healing wound on her hind leg and her left front paw's stiffness complained with dreary pains. But Silverrose did not care, she was not going to let this thing bite away at her patrol again. She failed once, she would not fail again.

Light at the end of the tunnel. It stung her eyes. But there he was, Crowtooth, fighting tooth and claw to restrain this monster -- and Winterpaw. Her heart skipped a beat with horror as the apprentice got slashed across the chest, fuel added to the rage that filled her mind. She would not fail again. Swift leaps avoided the mink's trashing movements, the opening created by Crowtooth and Winterpaw's diversion quickly spotted: she did not have to see it twice. Without hesitation her legs sprung up, arms outstretched to wrap around the mink's throat as much as she could, white fangs biting down on the mink's throat with all her might.

Before long, a metallic taste filled her mouth and the air in her lungs, red blood dripping from her maw in gushes. The throat, such a weak spot. But Silverrose only bit down harder and harder, claws digging into the beast to hold on despite its jerking movements, until slowly but surely, the beast began to fall. It began with a downward surge, a loss of strength and height as she felt the life begin to leave its body. It sent a chill through the silver warrior's bones, but she did not relent, not until the mink was down and dead on the ground. For several more seconds she held on, she had to be sure, certain. But it was dead. Reluctantly, Silverrose let go with a shudder. Red covered her chest and maw, and the warrior grimaced at the unholy sight, swallowing down the adrenaline and nerves pumping in her veins to keep a composed demeanour, though her mind was reeling.
"Are you both alright? - !"
She turned their way, eyes studying Crowtooth then Winterpaw.
"Winterpaw, you-"
She swallowed down her stern tone, replacing it with calm and serious.
"That was immensely dangerous. Are you feeling alright, can you stand?"
She hated the drip of concern in her voice as she joined the apprentice's side, offering him a shoulder to lean on.

Of course things had gone too smoothly. Of course Starclan, if they still felt like meddling in the affairs of the earthly, had sent something to cause them harm. Crowtooth’s yowl, though distorted by the bouncing and beating it took off of the tunnel walls, reached Deadmoon with the emotion, if not specific wording, very much intact. She took off immediately, groundhogs forgotten, pelting through the underground passages as fast as she could.

In the end, her efforts were for naught. Silverrose and Winterpaw had extinguished the threat, a mink clearly dead at their paws and the apprentice’s injury being fussed over by the new warrior. She was wholly unnecessary, a useless afterthought to what had surely been a dangerous confrontation. Nothing new there then. Deadmoon wasn’t needed for anything beyond manual tasks an apprentice could complete, the stronger cats would handle the fighting.

While logically she was aware that her mind was likely producing complete and utter drivel in response to her placement in the tunnels being deeper than the others, Deadmoon couldn’t help feeling a bit…..expendable. It was good the mink was dead. It was good that her patrolmates were safe. This was the best outcome of an unfortunate situation, and she probably couldn’t have brought it to a better end. Her lack of utility stung still.

It was as her family had reminded her as a kit. She had striven to ignore it, but it echoed in her mind now. She could be useful, if she worked hard and kept her head down. Did as she was told without trying to reach for more, because at the end of the day she would never be fast enough. Strength and could develop, but her paw would never allow the top speeds reached by other warriors. Windclan was swift, like the wind. It was written in their lean shape, and in the very prey they ate.

She didn’t have that speed, and she got along without it, but right now she missed it. No, desired it. Coveted it. Shaking her head to clear it (thinking so much and doing so little, as ever) she mewed softly I’ll just…..go back and get the groundhogs. before turning back into the tunnel. Deadmoon made her way down it slowly, there was no need for haste, and began dragging her prizes back. She had been proud. Thought she was doing well. And then her satisfaction was pierced like a paw pad by a thorn, evaporating so easily it had almost never been there. She thrust her head out into the sun, prey on back and in her maw. As long as everyone was safe, everything was fine. Rani zozelen Estelle

There was never a single damn moment of peace in this life and though it was probably not appropriate to say what he did in front of the apprentice the circumstances changed things. So, as the warrior desperately held the snapping mink away from his face as Winterpaw tried and failed to get him free Crowtooth cursed like a sailor in a manner Twilightstar probably wouldnt be impressed by should she have overheard.

Silverrose to the rescue however, as even as the tunneler was occupied by shoving the beast back further from both him and Winterpaw and snarling as a too close bite plucked out a couple of his whiskers, she at least was taking care of it.
She seemed satisfied too with the kill, at least that was Crowtooths read on it, shoving the limp body of the beast off from where it'd slumped on him. He let her deal with Winterpaw as he panted, turning to look over the area again just to make certain that mink was a fluke and they didnt need to bolt.

Which it seemed was the case, the toms tattered ears twitching to Deadmoon as she peaked out from the tunneler and he grinned tiredly at her as he rasped "Thank. Would appreciate 'f ya could take as many o' our groundhogs as ya can. Dunno 'f Winterpaw will wanna take his own catch back after this mess an' while I can take mine an' the mink itd be nice 'f I didnt have ta."

If she'd be able to take four groundhogs rather then her two plus Winterpaws one he'd slide one of his two towards her, but if not the tom would pad without complaints to collect the catch and call this thing done.
"Alrighty that was an unwanted shock I can say fer sure. Winterpaw dont do that again until yer confident but thanks fer tryin' ta help me, ya got honor. Head back, Deadmoons got yer catch an' be sure ta check in wit' Lightningstorm just in case.

Silverrose good save, next time I want a mink dead Ill know who ta call. Ya'll did great even wit' the upset so lets head back an' get some rest."
After this they all deserved it and they were done here.

Grab the groundhog(s maybe), grab the mink, and they were off.

Winterpaw repressed the hiss that threatened to escape him, taking Silverrose's offer to lean against her- slightly against his will, considering that he more stumbled into her side. "I'm sorry, Silverrose," he meowed with a slight tremble to his voice. Not because of her criticism, the warrior was completely right, but because Winterpaw's chest felt constricted. Some blood dripped down to his already stained white paws. "Thank you for stepping in. And yes, I'm feeling okay. I'll be able to make it back to camp... I doubt it's too severe." Not like Winterpaw knew the first thing about injuries. Really, though, the way Silverrose was able to run in and take out the mink like that was impressive. And she still seemed quite composed.

Winterpaw nodded at Crowtooth as well once the tunneler told him, like Silverrose, not to do that again. It was understandable, he was an apprentice with no battle experience, and also got hurt trying to help his patrol leader. But Winterpaw for once wasn't thinking that far ahead, instead just focused on trying to make sure no one got hurt. Crowtooth thought that meant he had the virtue of honor, apparently. Not something Winterpaw would think of himself, but he supposed it could be applicable to him...

Winterpaw waited for the patrol to be ready to leave, and for Deadmoon to gather the groundhogs left behind (Winterpaw would be able to carry his even less now), wondering if he was going to have to lean against a shoulder the whole way back to camp. He... kind of hoped not.

Rabbitpaw
He/him | WC Apprentice | Moons: 6 | Purrks: none | Part Manx cat

Rabbitpaw perked up his head as he turned to look at the warrior who had decided to drop by the apprentice den. Rabbitpaw had been taking a slight break after everything that has been happening lately, luckily more good than bad for him at least, but with the idea of having more training he was already hopping to his paws with a bubbly bounce to his step. "Oooh! Me, me! I want all the training!" The apprentice exclaimed excitedly, nearly tripping over his own lanky paws to get to the warrior, settling right in front of her to make sure his interest was known. He wasn't actually sure what training they were going to do but he wanted to surprise Crowtooth with already knowing it. Oh maybe it would be hunting or fighting or something equally as cool and maybe afterwards he can show some of his kit friends how to do it. He knew how much he always wanted to practice things when he was stuck in the nursery.

Though...to be fair, he was only made an apprentice like...a couple days ago so it wasn't all that surprising. He looked at the warrior with wide green eyes, "What're we going to do? Oh! I'm Rabbitpaw by the way, just in case you don't know." He tacked on the introduction because he realized that he didn't quite know the warrior in front of him and he wasn't sure if she knew him.

Dovepaw had just been enjoying a nap as Bravebird had peeked her head into the apprentices den. They looked up, their eyes drowsy, and listened to the warriors words.

"Hrmmm? Oh. Uh sure, I'll go" his voice was laced with drowsiness but it was slowly leaving their voice as they started to wake up. Then, the apprentice slowly clambered to their feet in the den and started to walk towards Bravebird.

Two answers... well, that was better than nothing. Bravebird grinned at both of the apprentices as they joined her in the clearing. "Hello, Rabbitpaw. Nice to meet you," she replied with a forced grin. This was one of the newer apprentices if she recalled correctly, named during... She blinked, dismissing the thought from her mind as she glanced at Dovepaw as well. "We'll start with a quick run to wipe away the sleepiness, and then we can work on some fighting moves. Sound good?" Starting with fighting would be good. It would be a way for her to do what she loved to do most and prepare these kids for what was to come.

Without much else said the lilac warrior turned and headed out of camp, only breaking into a sprint once she had left the clearing. Since they had moved to the cliff that she and Fernpaw had found all those seasons ago, Bravebird had made it a habit of racing out of camp and down the slope. It gave her momentum, and for a brief moment as she felt the wind tangle its fingers through her fur, it made her forget her worries. It was just her, and the moors, and the wind...

She didn't go full speed though, and occasionally glanced over her shoulder to make sure Dovepaw and Rabbitpaw were keeping up. They were coming up on the small patch of woodland - Sunset Grove, she recalled, and Bravebird slowed a bit and turned, glancing at both of the 'paws with her. There were no sign of the minks thankfully, but she kept an eye out for porcupines. Stars... did not want to go through that again. "How're you both feeling? Awake and ready for some training?" Of course, she'd let them catch their breath first; endurance to the level she had required consistent training, and for apprentices not used to that yet it would take a bit of time to acclimate to.

Silverrose heaved a sigh of relief, seeing both Winterpaw and Crowtooth were alright… Or at least, as alright as they could be, considering the apprentice’s injury. Thank goodness nothing worse happened. Even so – still thinking the apprentice’s actions were foolish – she nodded at Crowtooth’s words. Foolish, but painfully brave. He stood chance of becoming an honourable warrior, if he didn’t let himself be overtaken by hubris, just as every other warrior. Noting Deadmoon’s presence, and the tunneller’s request for her, Silverrose briefly looked back at Winterpaw.
“..Thank you.”
She stated blankly at his compliment before following up,
“I’ll help Deadmoon with the groundhogs, you concern yourself with the mink if able. Winterpaw – wait for me here, we’re going to see Lightningstorm as soon as we return. You’d be off far worse if that wound got infected, you don’t know where that mink has been.”
Her ears flicked, instructions clear. She allowed Winterpaw to rest on the ground if needed, easing her down if so, before disappearing after Deadmoon to gather the groundhogs that were left. Carrying them with her maw, as many as she could, the warrior returned moments later once again silently offering her shoulder for Winterpaw to lean on should it be needed. The warrior would remain next to the apprentice for the rest of the road back, wanting to make sure he didn’t collapse.

Rabbitpaw was happy that Bravebird had allowed him to join her and Dovepaw for training, he had a lot to learn if he wanted to be ready to protect Windclan from Riverclan and minks! The warrior started with bringing them on a run through the territory which was amazing, it was the first time that Rabbitpaw really got to just run!!! Not confined by the walls of camp or having to stay with the group. It was the first time he really felt the winds of their territory and it was the moment that really felt like Rabbitpaw was Windclan, that he was one with the wind and the territory! He was Rabbitpaw of Windclan and he was going to be the best apprentice and warrior that he could be for his clan. Starting with this training, even though he was already planning so many trainings and had a spar with Lightningpaw. Eventually, Bravebird slowed to a stop and Rabbitpaw halted as well, gasping for air now that he realized just how much his lungs had lagged compared to his legs.

They were now in a woodland, Rabbitpaw hadn't been given any tours yet so he didn't know what it was called, he made a note to ask Crowtooth or someone else for a territory tour soon. His green eyes lifted from the terrain to the warrior as she spoke again. The blonde apprentice heaved one more big breath, held it for a moment in his burning lungs, before exhaling and lifting up. "More than ready! Will we be running back to camp too?" The little tom tried not to be too excited at the thought of another run but he couldn't help it, that was so much fun. He couldn't help but be anxious. He didn't know if they were near any borders or near where any mink sightings have been but he trusted that Bravebird wouldn't have led them to a dangerous spot. He pointedly squashed down the flashes of the meeting that showed behind his eye lids every time he blinks as he thought of borders, or more so, the Riverclan border. Everything was okay, just focus.

Rabbitpaw turned his attention to the apprentice that was also here, Dovepaw. The blonde apprentice hasn't been able to meet many of his fellow apprentices yet, mostly just Lightningpaw, and that was it. "My name is Rabbitpaw, I am happy to be able to train with you!" The tom gave to the other apprentice in greeting, tilting his head slightly as he awaited to be given a greeting or introduction back from Dovepaw.

At the enthusiasm of Rabbitpaw, Bravebird grinned and flicked her tail. Crowtooth was a good choice for his mentor; he'd be certain to foster that sense of excitement within the young tom. "More than likely, yes. Just as important as hunting and battle training is building your endurance. A WindClan strength is being able to out-speed our opponents - tire them out and then come at them with enough blows to knock them down." Trotting a bit further into Sunset Grove, to a patch that was a bit more clear, she turned to face the two. "We'll start with basic fighting moves, and then try a bit of partner fighting since there's two of you."

Turning first to Rabbitpaw, Bravebird squared her shoulders as she faced the apprentice. "First basic move you'll need to know is the front paw blow. You'll take your front paw, lift it like this, and strike down on either your opponents head or shoulders." Lifting a paw, she aimed to swipe at the air in rapid succession, each time bringing her paw down hard enough to create a small breeze. Then she glanced towards Rabbitpaw, and with the same sheathed paw brought it down gentle on first his head, then his shoulders. "In a real fight, you'll do it with your claws out. You can also change it up to have your paw coming from the side, like this-" Taking her paw again she aimed a gentle paw on Rabbitpaw's cheek - nowhere near hard enough to hurt, just a gentle tap.

"Now, if a front paw blow is being used on you, best way to dodge is to yank your head back, or duck low to the ground. Side to side also works." Really, any move backwards or out of the way would suffice. Bravebird glanced at the two with a nod. "How about Rabbitpaw, you try the move, and Dovepaw, you try to duck. Then, you can switch."

Rabbitpaw smiled, excited at the prospect of being able to run again soon but for now he needed to learn, learn, learn, so it's battle time! How else will be able to protect Windclan from fish and minks alike! The warrior started to explain and the blonde apprentice fixed his green eyes on her, carefully watching the way she moved her paws and body as she swung out, woahhhh! That's so cool! The tom bounced in place once and then stilled as Bravebird turned to him and gently bapped his head and shoulders. Rabbitpaw giggled, though you weren't supposed to laugh when you got hit, but it was very soft it was like playing!

Then Bravebird showed another way before motioning for Rabbitpaw to try to move out on Dovepaw. Yes! He's going to be so good at this and then Dovepaw is also going to be so good at dodging too! Then they'll both be so great! Rabbitpaw turned to face the other apprentice and steadied his paws under him like he saw Bravebird do, and then he used a paw to shoot out at Dovepaw, aiming for the other's shoulders with a sheathed paw. Regardless of that hitting or not the blond apprentice then, even though he knew that Dovepaw wasn't probably going to try and hit him back, jumped backwards a bit to put more distance between them. In a real battle, this would be so his opponent can't lash back really quick! At least, that's how it would work in his brain.

After a moment he glanced towards Bravebird with a wide grin, "Howwasthat!" His words came out really quick and almost non-understandable even to his own ears, so the lad had to slow down with a scrunched up face, as though it took more effort to speak than it did to practice fighting. His words tumbled out unintelligibly two more times. Until finally, "How. Was. That? There! Wh-why was that so difficult?" The second question was aimed at himself more than it was at Dovepaw or Bravebird. Still he didn't linger long and moved on to waiting for Bravebird's feedback instead.

BRAVEBIRD
she/her | windclan fury | 45 moons | active purrks

DOVEPAW

Dovepaw had already learned how to do this skill. In fact, it was one of the few things Heatherwhisker had taught them before Heatherwhisker had gone missing. Despite knowing how to perform the skill, he didn't say anything to Bravebird about it. Instead, he just listened to the warrior explain everything to Rabbitpaw. They paid keen attention to the form of Bravebird's paw.

Soon enough, Bravebird had finished the demonstration and told Rabbitpaw to try it on them. Dovepaw turned and got into position as they waited for the blonde apprentice to try it out. But before Rabbitpaw's paw could make contact with Dovepaw, Dovepaw batted Rabbitpaw's paw away just like Heatherwhisker had taught him. The move was muscle memory at this point. They blinked their blue eyes as they watched Rabbitpaw's paw get deflected by their own paw.

Then Rabbitpaw jumped back like he had anticipated. Dovepaw wasn't planning on hitting back anyways. He didn't move closer or farther away, he just turned his head towards Bravebird as Rabbitpaw rambled. Which Rabbitpaw's words were fast and hard to understand.
