The tom walked into the den with fresh moss and started forming a bed, he removed the rocks from underneath the bed, these retired warriors deserved their rest. He gritted his teeth, he just wanted to e a warrior again! No. He couldn't think like that, this was his fault. He deserved this...or did he? All he did was love her, but that's a crime a betrayal of the clan, so it didn't matter anymore.

He exited the den, and walked in back in a few minutes later with a piece of moss soaked in moss ball. "Anybody need their ticks removed?"

--Brittleshore--

The grey elder lifted his head tiredly, curled up inside his nest. He blinked icy blue eyes awake. Ah, he could see two cats inside the Elder's Den. It seemed he had visitors. Brittleshore opened his maw in a yawn, revealing razor-sharp teeth that hadn't been dulled with age by any circumstance. Pushing his front paws out in front of him a stretching, Brittleshore felt himself slowly awaken. He turned his head, wondering why none of the other elders had taken up the young cat's offer. Brittleshore squinted at the cat, but he could not see him. He couldn't identify who it was. Ah, no matter, he would just avoid saying the cat's name.

"That's very kind of you to offer," Brittleshore meowed gently. "I could use some tick-removing, yes, if you don't mind." Settling down back into his nest, he watched, partly amused, as a she-cat- Creamfrost, was it? -padded up to him with absolute certainly and questioned him about her brother's love life. Brittleshore tipped his head to the side in thought, absentmindedly flicking his tail. "I'm afraid you're going to have to elaborate more on this situation, Creamfrost." He meowed, finally. "I would love to help you, but to do so I need more information. Perhaps, who has your brother fallen in love with? Why do you want to stop him?"

It was a bit peculiar in the elder's den. It smelled kind of funny, and it seemed decently sized considering only a few cats lived in there. Saltkit's eyes were wide as they scanned the den. Really, it seemed huge, at least compared to the nursery. Good Starclan, it was getting crowded in the nursery. Hopefully she could graduate to the apprentices' den soon, though she had a sneaking suspicion that, considering the absurd number of apprentices crawling around the camp, the apprentices' den wouldn't be that much of an upgrade. Hmm.. maybe she could just stay in here. Surely a pawful of old cats didn't need this much room? And! Being a warrior was about being efficient, right? So what was with all of this.. this inefficient use of space?!

Unfortunately, most grown-ups were awfully boring, and she was fairly certain that Kestrelstar wouldn't be open-minded enough to enact her excellent idea. Maybe she could do it under the radar? No, the elders would tattle. Unless she buttered them up? But how do you bribe an elder? They didn't seem to care about anything other than fresh moss and tick removal. She refused to mess with that stinky bile, and while she had no qualms about sneaking out of camp for moss, it may look suspicious for a kit to show up with fresh moss. Oh! Oh, what had her father told her? The old cats liked telling stories! Right, she could sit for a story.

"Hello?" She reflexively scrunched her nose as she spoke. Talking was so stupid. Why did cats do it? It looked so dumb with the flapping mouths and expectant eyes, like the motions were supposed to mean something to her, but her father had said that talking was part of clan life, and he couldn't coddle her like her mother did. She guessed he was right, and even if she didn't think so, she wouldn't dare say he was wrong.

--Brittleshore--

The grey elder lay sleeping in his nest, twitching his tail every now and then as he dreamed about green-leaf, when he could go swimming and the water wouldn't be so cold. But then a voice broke through his dream and Brittleshore rose, blinking blearily as he tried to clear his vision. Using his front paws,Brittleshore pushing himself upright, albeit with some difficulty. He blinked the last of his sleep away and saw a little kit in the den. Ah, a visitor. The last time he had told a story, gosh. Brittleshore winced, reminding himself yet again that he had a promise to live up to.

"Hello, young one." Brittleshore called out to the little kit, lowering himself back down into his nest for optimal comfort. "May I ask why you are here? Is there anything you need?" Brittleshore just left it at that, deciding to save his voice for later. There was only one reason he knew why kits would come to the Elder's Den, and it wasn't to remove ticks. But Brittleshore had a strange feeling this little kit was here for more than just a story. He didn't know. Maybe it was just a feeling.

But there were many dangers lurking around the corner. Would you like to hear about the time I broke my tail, or when I got my warrior name?" The old molly hated talking about her broken tail. That tail break ended her warrior life. She hoped no one else had to go through the same pain she had to go through.

I was climbing a tree and I slipped off the branch and fell into the river. I tried to catch myself and slammed my right back paw on the rocks and snapped the bone in half. (Open. Please only reply if it's more than a small paragraph. Nothing against shorter posts, but I'm in the mood for a longer roleplay at the moment! Thank you! :) And you won't find Poppy on the Allegiances at the moment because she's new and I submitted her only a few days ago, just so no one's confused.)

It was dark. The air smelled strongly of cat dirt. The carpeted floor around her was discolored and in bad condition. Splintered wood and broken glass was scattered around the ground at her paws. Light shone into the small twoleg den through a single window, revealing a single doorway leading into another room. The yellow patch of light slid across the room, distorting slightly until it faded away with the monster that had created it as it passed the house on the nearby thunderpath.

Turning her head, the cat saw the dark shape of another cat lounging on a lumpy, outdated, floral patterned sofa. Piercing blue eyes stared at her from the dark shadow, causing a shiver down her spine. Deep, dark, endless. They seemed to pull her into them. Fear immediately filled her mind. Those eyes. Always those eyes. Filled with indifference, disdain, hate, disgust, or nothing at all. The eyes of her mother.

The muted sound of a chair scraping from the other room shrouded in darkness. Heavy footfalls. The rough, low voice of a twoleg. She scrabbled back. Frantically, she looked at the couch, hoping for help. Any at all. Nothing. No cat sitting there. No dark shadow. No piercing blue eyes. She was alone. Not this. Not again. Glass shattering. A stabbing pain in her left flank. A cry of surprise and anger from her sister.

With a jolt, Poppythroat woke up, breathing heavily. Sunlight streamed into her den, casting shadows on the ground before her. The old she-cat's breathing slowed as she lay in her nest. It was the same camp. The same sky. The same rushing of the river, ever present. The same sunlight warming her dark ginger pelt. She was at home. Her real home. The only real home she'd ever known. Her gold eyes shut once more. Peace.

It seemed a moon never passed without the elder having that dream at least once. Bad memories of a life she once knew, a long, long, time ago. It seemed like the beginning of time, and yet it was still as vivid and clear to her now as if it had happened yesterday. Her life before she was a clan cat. Her youth. The more she was reminded of how bad her life had been, the more grateful she was that she had found Riverclan and had been lucky enough to become an apprentice in it. She often wondered what her life would have been like if she hadn't left that prison of a twoleg nest. Most likely, she would be dead.

With a deep inhale of breath, the lean molly hauled herself to a sitting position. Her short pelt stuck out at certain places, unruly from the short nap she'd taken. Poppythroat knew she needed to groom herself, but for the moment she soaked in the sun, eyes still closed. She could hear the sounds of cats in the clearing. The laughter of kits. The excited mewing of apprentices. The more relaxed tone of warriors. She took it all in. The solitude of the elders' den. The quiet stillness. Ah, how she enjoyed this. Her alone time. Time to hear herself, and the world around her.

But, she couldn't stay like this forever. Opening her eyes once more, Poppythroat started the needed job of grooming herself. She wasn't very old, compared to some other elders, but she was starting to slow down. Every now and then the ginger elder enjoyed going out into the territory and hunting or dusting off her fighting skills, just in case. In her mind, she still had a lot to offer to the clan. And who knows, maybe she's right.

Silverfish walked into the den, seeing Poppythroat in the far corner. She padded over to her nest. It seemed to be calling to her, saying simple things like "sleep" or "nap", but Silverfish ignored it. She couldn't bring herself to sleep. It was odd, but she felt like something would happen if she got in the nest. Nothing bad, but she felt uneasy sleeping at the moment.

Instead, she just padded over to Poppythroat. She sat quietly for a moment, but then she felt her eyes get heavy, and soon she was asleep. But before that, she got a good look at who was around her, just in case something bad happened.

In her dreams, Silverfish saw a ShadowClan she-cat that she recognized as Sunburst run straight towards her. It was odd, because Sunburst didn't run to her, it was more like through her. When she turned around Sunburst was talking with a RiverClan tom, whose name Silverfish couldn't remember. Was she sure it was a RiverClan cat? No. It just looked like one. She walked over to the two cats, and asked them what they were doing, but they didn't notice her. It was like... she wasn't there. So she tried again, but she asked louder. They didn't hear her. Then, just as quickly as it began, it ended.

Silverfish woke up and saw Poppythroat still in the corner. Odd dream, but it was over. Although, that didn't mean Silverfish was going to forget it. She told herself that she would talk to Sunburst at the next Gathering and tell her about the weird dream. She kept saying in her mind the same thing. It was just a dream. But that didn't make it stop feeling so real!

That it took this long for Snakeheart to have this conversation was partially his own fault. Sure part of it could be said that thunderclan didnt help, the attack came at a bad time and the medicine cat had been frantically busy with the dead and dying he was tasked with healing and maintaining the herb stores that had been on the decline after the long cold winter. Saying that though..... This was a tough but short conversation and there really was no excuse for him avoiding this for so long. Still he was eventually here padding into Skystars den to talk about the future of the medicine cat role and the simple fact that Reedpaw... didnt want it.

Mintkit brought the rest of their shared squirrel into the elders' den followed by Beekit. She hoped they wouldn't bother no one, but she needed to take the prey to someone who would finish it otherwise it would quickly rot. No one should get sick because of this.

The smell of prey spread among the willow stems and the elders would probably smell it by now. Would someone come up to her, or will they have to ask someone directly? Mintkit stared at Beekit uncertain about what to do, without leaving the squirrel out of her mouth.

Bluebellkit shuffled into the elders' den timidly, clutching a mouse in her jaw. She'd wanted to go listen to a story, partly because stories fascinated her and partly because she wanted to hear what life was like before she was born. "Erm.." She managed to get out. "Hello.. I was told the elders could tell me a story... is anyone willing to?"

Even as old as she was the calico instinctively stirred at the sound of her sons dull claws scraping the soft earth of the elders den. Her eyes open as she roused herself from sleep, Slatestripes hushed voice slipping through the entrance into her waiting ears. Getting older sure isn't making waking up any easier. The tired she cat stifled a yawn as she looked up at the shadow in the shape of a cat, barley visible but for gleaming amber eyes.

It must still be dark. Her acknowledgement of the time of day quickly sobered her thoughts as she realized what Slatestripe had to say must be important. "What is it dear?" As she spoke she padded past him to the entrance flicking her tail as a sign for him to follow so that they might be out of earshot of the other elders. She waited for her son to draw closer to her, concern gnawing at her stomach.

Amberbright heard the mewling call of a brash kitten and the paws of another before she saw them but decided quickly she was going to play with them a little bit. The sly old black and grey calico shut her amber eyes tightly and lay with her paws crossed in front of her. She let her shoulders fall low emitting snoring sounds acting as if she were sleeping. One of the kits climbed up her long slender body, exclaiming excitedly that her small figure was tall. What a pair of rambunctious rascals. The elder hoped she was not smiling as their antics made her heart fill with warmth.

The she-kit above her was squarely on her left shoulder and the other had posted himself in front of her muzzle. Suddenly her eyes flashed open, "Surprise!" Amberbright rolled to her left catching the she-kit by the scruff and pulled the tom into her chest with clawless pads. She rubbed her paws over his forehead ruffling his fur for a moment before letting go of both of them, dropping the she-kit in front of her. Slatestripe quietly followed his mother out of the elders’ den and into the light of the clearing. He glanced around, finding that nobody else seemed to be nearby. Not that what he had to say was top secret or anything, but cats got to assuming all sorts of things when one brought matters of ambition into it.

He took a few moments to find the right words to say. His dull claws scratched at the earth, leaving little indents in the dirt. The grass seemed to be yellowing with the passing of the seasons.

Finally, he said what was on his mind. “About a moon ago, I met Mintpaw. You probably remember her from her ceremony recently; she’s Fawnleap’s apprentice? Anyways, I taught her how to swim when she was still a kit. The first time we met, I found her collecting stones from the shallows by the nursery. It reminded me of Rainglow; maybe that’s why I was drawn to her. She showed me this one stone in particular.”

He paused. He’d spent the past moon wondering if he was truly crazy for trying to find meaning out of a stone. He wasn’t a medicine cat. “This stone looked like me. Even Mintpaw saw the resemblance. It was a black stone with gray lines, something like that. She found it in the middle of a bunch of other stones. All of these other stones looked different from one another. Like a Clan.

“And I guess I’m wondering… is that some sort of sign? I’ve been thinking about it for so long now. Is it… Is it some sort of sign that maybe I’m meant to be leader one day?”

As Slatestripe began his tale, the elder listened cooly. None of her body language gave any indication that this was anything other than a normal conversation. The orange orbs that rested on her face scanned her son with intensity and focus as she absorbed every piece of info he gave her. Mintpaws white fur and crisp cold blue eyes floated through her thoughts, as she did indeed remember the young cats ceremony. She stifled a purr at the thought of her son teaching a kit to swim. She knew he was a bigger softy than he let most knew, but handling a kit, however mature must have proved quite a handful.

Just another reminder of his dedication and devotion to the clan. She was also touched by the knowledge that their own family was so tight knit. After all Slatestripe had seen Rainglow in the young apprentice, showing his fondness for his brother, her other son. As he explained the stones and the strangeness of the event Amberbright sensed the tension in his voice. He seemed to be feeling uneasy acknowledging the fact that such an event might be prophetic. Good. The wise old cat was glad to see he hadn't let himself be overtaken by the self indulgent notion that he might be destined for leadership.

On the other hand as a mother, she could not be more elated by the possibility of her son aspiring to such heights. She steadied her feelings before she answered however. "That is something." She allowed her amber eyes to show intrigue at the story. The old cat gathered her small tail at her paws, letting it wiggle slightly transfixed on its movements. Thinking. She slowly raised her head after some time had passed, looking through her son who blended into the stary night. "Well I wont deny that such an event may be prophetic in nature." She spoke with a wistful far away tone, and just a hint of caution.

"However even if you or I are to believe that it is a sign from StarClan, the very nature of prophecy means you will be guided to this future." She gave his torn ear a quick lick.

"If our ancestors have chosen you it is because of the merits you already possess. I think you should act as if you never saw it, just be the cat you already are. One who is loyal, hardworking, and who looks after the clan."

https://i.ibb.co/4NzjzpV/cooltext417752208482045.png

Be the cat you already are.

That made sense to him. He felt the tension start to leave his body. He'd spent the past moon turning this whole thing over in his mind, again and again. He'd been desperate to find out if it was a sign from StarClan, because in his mind if it was that meant he had to act accordingly. But, his mother was right. If it truly was prophetic, that meant it was destined to happen no matter what. If it was just a coincidence, then his life would go on as normal anyways.

He affectionately flicked his tail over his mother's ears in response to her lick. "Thank you. Sometimes, if I'm being honest, I feel like I wouldn't be a good enough leader. I mean, I never thought about it before the whole stone thing. If StarClan has destined my paws to be on this path, then I don't know... What if I can't handle it? I don't know the first thing about leading a whole Clan! I can handle kits and apprentices, but they're different."

He looked up at the stars. "Then again, lately I've been finding myself thinking about how RiverClan could be different. Like with Slatewhisker's funeral. What if we did funerals differently? Made it into an actual tradition instead of just sitting around feeling sad and then burying them? Or with the rogue situation. Maybe RiverClan needs to work harder on our battle skills than we have been. We mostly just focus on swimming and fishing."

He looked back down at his mother when he was finished. Once again, he couldn't help but feel that these roles should be reversed. It should be her thinking about leadership; not him. Of course, she couldn't become leader as an elder. But if she was still a warrior; she should've been thinking these things instead of him.

Amberbright gave a soft raspy chuckle at the two vastly different responses. She folded her old paws daintily in front of her bringing herself back to a relaxed resting position. I love kits, they are so honest at this age. Her amber eyes gleamed with amusement as the black and brown tom with white spots placed himself at a safe distance. Taking a stab at why the kits might have come to the elders den the aged wily calico teased the tom, "Your gonna have to get closer if you wanna hear a story, I'm so old I don't know if my voice will carry that far." She let her voice be a soft whisper and she paused tactically before adding "I know a big brave warrior like you isn't scared of elderly kitty like me?"

Amberbright brought her head low to the nearer white ball of fluff below her. "Would you like that, little one. A story?" The tiny kits sparkling blue eyes drummed up her sense of motherly affection and she gave the she kit a quick lick over the head to settle her fur.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As she watched the silhouette of Slatestripe, she noticed he was allowing himself to become more relaxed. It felt good for Amberbright to be of some use, and to be able to assuage the worries her son carried on his shoulders. They were the heavy worries of a younger cat, not yet tested, feelings of being unproven before the world around him. As he spoke of teaching apprentices and kits she felt he was downplaying the significance of that experience. "It's not as different as you might think." The images of guiding her own kits filled her mind, chastising them when they disobeyed, picking them up when they fell. All the while walking the myriad grey decisions in between, avoiding the fine lines that might bring them to a full life, or a quick death.

"A great leader with his clan is always thinking of them as precious. Watching over them like a queen with her kits. He knows when they are giving sound advice, and when they need to be reigned in." The calico's body stiffened under her grey black fur, the old muscles making her sit rigidly upright. "If you feel you don't know the answers, turn to the cats you believe in. Relying on the very clan you are trying to nurture will build a bond of trust." She relaxed her face allowing her maw to widen in a smile.

"Even I don't expect you not to make mistakes. Sure cats will hold you to a higher standard, but as long as you recognize and attempt to reconcile those misfortunes you will have your clans respect. And respect is the highest honor a leader can achieve, don't let any cat tell you different. If they do I'll claw their ears off." Amberbright fell silent as she listened to the ambitions of her son. She was pleased he took the possibility of leadership so seriously, he was already considering ways to help his clan. Even as a deputy he could achieve these things as long as he could reach the ears of the disheveled Pikestar. His goals were realistic and achievable. She had raised a fine son.

Once Slatestripe had finished Amberbright had her eyes fixed into his channeling all her pride and warmth into his own amber gaze. "Those are fine plans!" Pride swelled in her spilling over into her voice. "As long as you temper that ambition with sound advice from the clan I think you will make a fine leader one day." She couldn't stop herself from stepping forward and nuzzling her son with an undignified purr escaping her throat.

Amberbright tipped her head back down to the excited prickling white pelt of the she kit who was clamoring for a tale as soon as possible. "We will get there I promise it will be the greatest story ever!" The elders voice was full of embellished grandeur. "First though, what are your names and what kind of story would you like to hear? As she asked the question Amberbright spotted Otterpaw entering the den and sheepishly inquiring after the needs of the group. She waved the young apprentice over with a flick of her gray tail. "I wouldn't mind some damp moss, my throat gets a little dry when telling stories."

Satisfied with their responses the aged warrior slid onto her side into her comfortable bedding. She squirmed around for a few moments trying to find a spot which would not agitate her battle tested body, nor any of its old aches and pains that seemed to get more bothersome every leafbare. The tri colored calico's amber eyes rolled back into her head thoughtfully searching for softly buried memories. A gentle breeze echoed through the den and she waited for the hollow din of wind against rock to pass.

"There have always been four clans under the watchful eye of StarClan." The elder began. Her voice was far off and soft, but layered with dramatic weight. "Great clans filled with many brave cats. Some were sleek with oily fur and taught to hunt along riverbeds, eating a bounty of fish. Their bravery to enter water and clever hunting techniques ensured they were blessed and well fed under Silverpelt." Her eye twinkled as she looked down at the pair of the kits sure they would recognize their heritage. "Others were permitted into the dense tall trees of the forest stretching high high into the sky." The old cat stretched her paws out over her head reaching as far as her limbs would let her, the words elongated to match her movements. "The many branches were full of more leaves than could be counted, and almost as many birds nested there. The cats here learned to climb and hide among birches and bushes alike."

The she-cat paused tactically before continuing letting her description sink in. "Yet still more cats were carefully settled in the dark foreboding pines, tough and cold their hearts were chilled by mountain air." Amberbright let her tone become low and intimidating. "They were survivors willing to do anything to maintain their piece of land and way of life. The fourth and final group of cats ran wild and free across the open moors. The wind at their backs giving them the speed and grace needed to catch their prey." Amberbright let her face be level with the pair of kits raising a brow with a serious look she prompted, "Can you guess who they were?"

The aged cat curled her tail beneath her back paws waiting patiently for the duo's responses.

Slatestripe purred and nuzzled his mother in return. “I understand. Being a leader is like being a parent, or a long-term mentor. I suppose you’re right, that they’re really not that different of roles. It’s just something that would take a bit of a different approach. I think I can do that, if I were to give myself a little time and patience.”

He let the conversation lapse into silence for a fair bit. He gazed up at the stars, wondering where he’d be a season-cycle from now. So much was always changing in RiverClan that it was impossible to predict. Who knew if he’d even still be alive. He was luckier than a lot of cats to have even made it three and a half season-cycles.

Eventually, he spoke again. “What do you think of Pikestar?” A few simple words with so much weight and meaning. His mother had lived through more leaderships than he, so he assumed she’d have a different take than most of the younger cats. After all, many of the cats in the Clan had only lived under Kestrelstar, Skystar, and now Pikestar.

He waited for her to give her thoughts before giving his own. He was curious if they’d align at all.

The small white kit who had forgotten to give her name proudly shouted WindClan, which made Amberbright chuckle a little. "Well that is one of the four I was talking about." Her head tilted to Webkit who was nodding in response to her question but she sensed the eagerness beneath his pelt though his small brown eyes did not betray this fact. "You kits learn these facts younger and younger don't you, well then let me get on with it." The old cat gathered her paws under her calico fur and took another breath before beginning.

"There was a time when I was still a very young warrior, that instead of four clans there were two, although we did still call ourselves RiverClan and ShadowClan among one another." Her amber eyes flickered up and down jumping from memory to memory like water rolling naturally from a river to a lake. The flames from her memories could almost be seen in the depths of the orange resting under her narrowed lids. "I'm going to tell you the story of Bucknight, a cat of cunning, malice and once given leadership of our two clans."
Her voice was heavy with truth and buried in the weight of her faraway memories.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy and content with her son returning her affection Amberbright let the quiet moment sink in. It was nice and cool under the moonlight, and the wind that passed into the camp made every reed and bush sing gently. The Elderly cat felt that elusive sense of calm that every creature searched for in life, she was at peace. Her soul clung to it, for the long years had taught her that it would not last, and the moment however brief needed to be cherished. As she squeezed out every drop of positivity from the soothing atmosphere stretching it to seem longer than it actually was, her son posed a loaded question.

She guessed he was also feeling the euphoric moment and more than a little scrutinized by the nearby hover of Silverpelt. "Hmmm..." The gray-black calico elder hummed with thought at stirring the recent events in her mind, measuring them against her own experiences with past leaders. After some time had passed she began to speak carefully, having decided to start with the good in order to maintain her blissful demeanor. "Pikestar has one important thing that many of our former leaders did not possess. He is cautious and mindful of the weight of his action on not just himself but our relations with the surrounding clans as well." Her words left her grizzled mouth candidly thinking on his reverence for dead warriors like Slatewhisker and the care taken to not recklessly attack other clans when loners were possibly killing some of their clan.

"Lionstorm for all his bravery was foolish to attack ThunderClan alone. It started a war full of bloodshed, and because no consulting was ever done, none in the clan can actually verify if the actions he took were just." Amberbrights words caught in her mouth, her normal questioning ways feeling like disloyalty to a cat she had admired for many moons. She knew despite her emotions that her logic was correct, no cat could verify Lionstorm story that Fawnhearted had died by ThunderClans hands. "If he had at least waited for backup maybe he would still be alive. Maybe we could have won more easily instead of sending two clans into chaos." A subtle sad frustration had entered her soft voice, and she fought the urge to look down at her paws.

"Most of the leaders in my time with RiverClan have shared this reckless nature, and Lionstorm was one of the more noble among them." Her thoughts flowed out in a stream of consciousness as she rattled off various leaders and examples of this trait as it came to mind. "Kestrelstar allowed himself to be guided and fooled by his inner circle into continuing the war because he knew no other way of showing strength. He allowed the death of Eelsting and his mother to change his judgment. In his confusion he did not look outside the higher ranks of his clan for answers. Many of us thought Snakeheart was a bad apple." She curled her lip at the thought of the two timing medicine cat, and at the same time felt glad that Fawnpaw was their medicine cat now.

"Sootstar had to brief a reign as leader for me to judge, but his absence probably just means it was too much for him. He should have stayed Sootflare, but only StarClan knows for sure." Her mind continued rolling back to the next cat "Fallenstar was more contained but his battles within his own clan and his squabbles with his deputies proved his anger, something he only reconciled at the end of his role as leader." His rash handling of the internal affairs of the clan had caused needless rifts that still persisted to this day. She passed over Russetswirl as he has been a worthy leader outside of appointing Fallenstar as the next to be in charge.

"Bucknight was probably the worst of all of them, he arrayed the clans in the forest against one another, even destroying the very hunting grounds we use. All just to satiate his lust for dominance over lands around the seastones." Amberbright returned to the present she felt her small withering tail grinding against her paws in anxiously. "In short unless the recent death of Shadepaw and Lynxfall have affected Pikestar as deeply as it did Kestrelstar I don't think he would drag us into anything unnecessary." She turned her paws over using them as a focus to move onto the next topic.

"That same careful nature of his though might also hinder him from taking action when needed, the weight of the events in the clan cause him to loose his composure and remove his ability to both console the clan, and gather info from it." She stopped abruptly from her blabbering. She was sure her son would have something to say by now. Amberbright smiled lightly with embarrassment. "Sorry I got carried away."

Two clans? Webkit thought, suppressing a huff. Did this elder really think that they would believe that there used to be two clans? There had always been four. "Shouldn't it be Buckstar then?" He asked.

Slatestripe listened intently to his mother’s words. A grim look crossed his face as he thought of the seasons-long war that RiverClan had endured with ThunderClan. The whole conflict had brought so many losses, only to end poorly for RiverClan. At the moment, in Slatestripe’s mind, their mortal enemy across the river had the upper paw. Perhaps, if past leaders had strategized better, they wouldn’t be in the position they were in. He nodded in agreement as his mother voiced her opinions on Lionstorm’s reckless decision to throw himself at ThunderClan without all the knowledge he needed to make a wise decision.

Slatestripe’s ear had been split in one of the many conflicts between the two Clans. A battle that felt like it was eons ago. He closed his eyes for a moment as bloody memories from times long since past rose up in his mind. He could still hear all the screeching. He could feel the warmth of the blood running down his face, as if his ear had never healed.

It had been a long time since he’d thought of those battles. He’d found his own way to move past them, even though he was reminded of that time every time he saw his own reflection. He focused harder on his mother’s words to quiet his own raging memories.

His mother shared similar thoughts about Pikestar as he. Once she finished, he chuckled at her apology for going on. “It’s fine, I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the leaders. Some of them I didn’t know as you did. I think the same of Pikestar as you. I admire his ability to carefully analyze situations to determine how they’ll impact the Clan before he acts. But, I fear he isn’t handling the string of recent deaths as a leader should. He’s hesitating, it seems. I’m worried the weight will be too much for him. He’s a strong cat, but what if he can’t find a way to lead while grieving? Perhaps I’m worrying for nothing, scarred by memories of our old leaders.”

He gazed back up at Silverpelt. “Still, more cats keep turning up dead all the time. I keep wondering… why haven’t we attacked the rogues yet? Is there something Pikestar is keeping from us? Why hasn’t he spoken to us every time a cat is killed by one of those rogues? Why hasn’t he chosen a deputy? I think he’s a good leader, but I worry how he’ll handle all this chaos. RiverClan needs stability.”

Amberbright absorbed her sons worries feeling her own fur prickle with concern at his astute thoughts. "We must give him a little more time to work things out, some cats take longer than others to process shock." Her first words were sympathetic and wistful and her next words nearly hopeful. "Perhaps he will come out of his inner crisis a better leader." Even as she said it the calico she-cat knew the words had not sounded all that convincing. Unfortunately experience told her heart that most cats broke under the heavy strain of leadership, it was much less often that she had been surprised in a positive way.

The scraggly elder mused over the possibility that Pikestar was hiding information from the clan. He certainly was capable of it, but to her it seemed more likely that he simply just refused to deal with the situation. Amberbright looked across the dark clearing out towards the leaders den, its entrance draped in invisible lichen that was hidden by the darkness. "I pray to StarClan that Pikestar is not foolish enough to keep all of us out of the loop without a good cause." If he was keeping secrets Amberbright hoped he was keeping a fair number of his close allies informed. A nagging feeling continued to creep up her pelt however that the leader was in fact isolating himself, and exposing the clan to danger in the process.

Her small tail was stirring up the dirt below her as Amberbright fixed her eyes filled with determination upon her son. "Slatestripe did you ever find anything out about the loners?" Her question was innocent, and very much tied to the fact that she herself had not talked with Fawnpaw yet. The old cat had decided to let the situation in the clearing simmer down before speaking with the medicine cat. Being an elder she had an easy method she could employ to gather information. At least my aching joints are good for something, she processed as a smirk crossed her face.

Slatestripe frowned as Amberbright asked about the outsiders. He shook his head. “I haven’t learned anything useful yet, but in all honesty I’ve been focused on the Clan itself. Holding that battle refresher took a lot of time, since I had to plan it and host it. And I’ve got my own apprentice to prioritize, along with the others I’m helping to train. And I still have to find time to patrol, and help out in the nursery…” His voice trailed off as he realized he was starting to ramble.

He quickly shook his head. “Anyways, I do hope to look into it more soon. Whoever they are, they certainly seem to cover their tracks well. I’m wondering if we’re dealing with some professionals. You know, cats who have killed plenty before turning their sights on RiverClan. Truly despicable monsters. I remember the elders of my kithood telling stories about them coming from the Twolegplace, drenched in blood with extra sharp claws. I stopped believing them when I got older, of course. But now, I’m starting to wonder if there’s some truth to them.”

He slid his dull claws out. He wanted nothing more than to rid their Clan of these terrible rogues, so that everyone could stop sleeping with one eye open. It seemed that the youth were especially in danger, but given that Slatewhisker had also been murdered the rogues clearly didn’t discriminate.

Slatestripe turned a pleading gaze on his mother. “Promise me you’ll stay close to camp, unless you’ve got a warrior with you. I couldn’t bear it if one of those rogues killed you, too.”

Her fur rustled with another cold breeze under the moonlight and the small frame of the elder began to shiver. They had been sitting just outside the entrance of the elders den for some time now, and the calico had been so engrossed in the conversation with her son she had not realized how cold she was beginning to feel. As Slatestripe made a kerfuffle about his duties she sensed the stress of his situation and longed to ease some of his responsibilities. As the black-grey toms voice trailed off and he shook his head Amberbright saw her chance. "Well with any luck your day to day patrols will root them out of hiding eventually. You just stay focused on the clan for now, you have enough on your plate." Her voice cooed the words softly, riding on a low and gentle tone like heavy waves rolling smoothly over rocks in the ocean.

Slatestripe carried on about past dangerous outsiders, his form tensing more and more with every word. The old she-cat considered RiverClans former problems well. It was true that enemies from twoleggplace had caused trouble on more than one occasion, yet her motherly instincts dissuaded the former warrior from confirming or denying such facts. Such an action would do little more than increase the pressure Slatestripe felt on himself, burdening his soul. Amberbright pressed up against him for both warmth and comfort. She added "No matter how professional they are every cat has to make a mistake eventually." Her words were calm and sure, the elder began to feel her worries for her son ebb away as she accepted some of the load upon herself. "Don't worry about looking into them, I will gather information in camp and relay it to you."

Her amber eyes observed the frenetic expanding and contracting of her sons ready but dull claws into the soft earth. With each retraction and expansion he was collecting a little more dirt in front of his paws until there was a small pile. He must be eager to solve this problem before it costs more young lives. Slatestripe had invested so much time training the young cats of the clan, more than most. It was no wonder that he would be so upset. The aged calico in her own way was used to preparing the youth for the tough world ahead, as such she shared some small sliver of his pain. After living so long and being the good attentive mother she was Amberbright could read her son like a book. It was a blessing at times, and at others a curse.

Lost in her own thoughts she was caught off guard by Slatestripe's own amber eyes meeting hers. In his orange orbs his fears were reflected clearly as day, and his voice too was heavy with insistence. She gave his torn ear another lick before answering feeling moved by her son's devotion. "Don't worry I won't do anything rash, and I won't leave camp," the greying she cat answered earnestly. She made herself taller and prouder as she spoke her next words soft but firm. "I don't intend to do nothing though. It's my clan too and I am still a warrior no matter what my age is." Ambrerbright felt the familiar well of pride searing through her fur. "You know better than anyone that I'm not quite senile yet, I wont let any cat get the jump on me."

Her whiskers twitched haughtily as her small form suddenly felt larger and younger than it had in moons. This mood was unusual for her but certainly not unwelcome. Amberbright made sure to keep her eyes fixed on her son to show him she needed this, that she was just as determined as he was to save their clanmates even as she abided by his wishes.

Slatestripe relaxed as Amberbright assured him that she’d be careful. He appreciated her offer of help, since the more paws they had helping out the better. She had the ability to spend much more time sitting around conversing than he. No cat would question it, since she was an elder and as such expected to talk with her Clanmates all day.

To say he was relieved that she’d be staying in camp was an understatement. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing the one cat - other than Rainglow - that he’d known for his whole life. Amberbright had always been there for him, caring for him and guiding him. Even at his age, he still needed his mom. And there was absolutely no shame in that.

He nodded in understanding as she insisted that she still take part in the Clan as much as she could. “I would never ask you to be uninvolved in your Clan. Where do you think I got my dedication from?” His eyes twinkled playfully. “I remember you always putting in as much effort as possible for your Clan, even when it was hard. I wouldn’t expect that to change now. I just want you to be safe, that’s all.”

He flicked his tail over her ears, repeating that familiar gesture of affection he’d used ever since he was tall enough to do so. “I’m glad you’re my mother. I’ve always been able to count on you, and in this world that means a hell of a lot.”

Amberbright watched the tension melt from Slatestripe, and in his eyes she saw the gears turning beneath them. The relief of her words, the acceptance of her pride as a warrior, and the veneration of those long earned skills mixed with his affection for her as a mother. As always when her son was around, he affirmed to her that peace followed. At least among the scrutinizing and cloudy thoughts of her conscience. He was always her reprieve from the dregs of reality, and the dangers of the world. She was so proud of him, and she knew he knew it, but wondered if such feelings could ever be fully communicated.

As her son's amber eyes lit up he took a sporting jab at her character teasing her for working so hard. "Well when you have two kits, one ambitious and rambunctious. And another who tries to sneak out to the river to collect stones like a squirrel collects nuts, hard work finds you." She let out a soft chuckle as she felt his tail float over her ears. "Well if you want me to be safe, the den behind me is a good place to start. If I stay out in this cold any longer my whiskers will turn to icicles." She gave a throaty purr as Slatestripe praised her, licking his torn ear reflexively.

She briefly considered all the troubles in her life that had led up to this moment and the joy of her relationship with her children. The untimely deaths of Thrushcatcher, Gentleclaw, Morningpaw, Meadowshine....If Amberbright had the choice of exchanging the lives of those cats for this moment she wouldn't. It seemed callous, but like anything it was a choice. No matter how she wrestled with what could have been, she knew her kits were more important to her than anything in this world. If she had not suffered then, such a bond might not even exist.

Through her sense of content the old cat's eyes began to list sleepily and her body felt achy from standing in the cold. She let out a controlled yawn while looking over her shoulder at the den. Sleep was grasping at the elderly cat, they had both been talking for a long time. She wondered if Slatestripe was tired too. Nothing in his small black form gave any indication of it, but perhaps her eyes simply weren't as keen as they used to be.

Slatestripe laughed at his mother’s reference to the antics he and Rainglow got up to as kits. “Yeah, we both probably gave you a few panic attacks every now and again. Sometimes I’m not sure how we both survived kithood!”

His tone grew more serious as she mentioned growing cold. They’d certainly been out here for a while, chatting into the wee hours of the night. Slatestripe wasn’t too cold, but he could understand how his mom was. After all, she was twice his age and burdened by arthritis. He stood and nodded toward the den.

“I understand. Thank you again for the chat. It helped me clear my mind in multiple ways. I’ll have to stop by and seek your services again, if I may.” He nuzzled Amberbright and then stepped back. He wanted to wait for her to go before he did. She’d spent her whole life being protective over him, so he felt in many ways he had to pay her back. His eyes twinkled in the starlight. “Good night, mom. I love you.”

Her son smiled sharing in her good humor until Amberbright joked about the cold. She watched his face transform into that usual stern look of concern of his he normally reserved for dealing with clan issues, or when he needed to assert authority with an uppity warrior. It was his I hope I don't need to tell you look. As he nuzzled her she nuzzled back, glad to be worthy of concern rather than feeling bothered by it. The brown flecks in her grey-black fur stood out against his similar color scheme. As the old cat settled with the idea of parting and the inviting allure of sleep Slatestripe expressed his desire to speak with her again, and offered her a fond I love you.

She responded with an open heart, "The den is always here as am I, but bring your brother sometime will you? I know he is busy but I feel like I haven't seen him in ages." It had been almost a full moon since Rainglow had stopped by and she wondered how her other son was doing. Amberbright was beginning to feel a little forgotten by him, though she tried not to show it so as to avoid distressing Slatestripe. She softened her amber gaze and allowed herself to whisper the words sweetly "Good night, I love you both with all my heart." Her words seemed to ring gently into the den, and she turned to follow the echos into the darkness. Eventually the tired elder found her typical mossy bed and lowered herself into it. Content her eyes closed quickly and she faded into deep peaceful slumber.

Amberbright
95 Moons

As Amberbrights words dropped from her mouth with dramatic weight, the white furred she-kit scooted closer. Her blue eyes told the elder she was hooked like a curious fish upon cats claws. Her captivation was entirely positive. On the other spectrum was Webkit, whose brown eyes narrowed with skepticism. He was hooked too, but his attachment to the story was born from completely different emotions. As she paused, he levied questions upon her about the nature of Bucknights name. It was a deeper question then the young tom realized. Amberbright's orange eyes flickered with approval at his curious scrutiny, it was a quality that would serve him well as he grew. It took me so long to acquire the ability and the confidence to question my clanmates. It comes to him naturally. The elder knew that if the kit figured out when to strategically ask those questions, he would be a great asset to his clan.

"Names my little warriors are more than just traditions. Star denotes a clan leader chosen by StarClan as you have just pointed out. Buckthorn as he was originally called knew this also, and so in order to defy Silverpelt and send a message to his cats along with the other clans he chose the suffix night. All other cats allied with him also took the suffix night, like Blazingash of ShadowClan who was arguably crueler than Bucknight himself who began this violent change in our lands. She became Blazingnight." The old brown black and grey calico measured her words carefully. The former warrior was trying hard to speak at a level the kits could understand. She had become adept at speaking down to her audience as many loved her stories, but she did always wonder how much exactly the young kits absorbed.

An air of caution hung on her next words. "Bucktnight may have brought chaos to the forest but don't be too quick to judge any cat so harshly. You never know when they will surprise you, for better.... or for worse." Her steady amber eyes floated to the side remembering the ambitious naive tom who seemed as if he would take on the whole world for his clan. Her tone was neutral rising and falling as the emotion of the story dictated. "When he was known as Buckthorn I was very young, I looked up to him you know?" Amberbrights face was wistful, and her mouth was slightly ajar as if she could still hardly believe the facts herself. "He seemed so brave. I wanted to be a warrior like him, because he reminded me of my father Thrushcatcher. I could not see what he would become. He was my clanmate, and somone trusted by Otterstar."

Memories of her fathers brown fur and amber eyes filled her mind. His image was vague and hazy after all these years, and the she-cat still felt remorse at not knowing either of her parents very well before their deaths. It was part of what drove her to the relationship she had with her sons, she wanted that closeness to be possible for Slatestripe and Rainglow. It was something she never had. The feeling of longing permeated her body, and Amberbright brought herself together more tightly into a ball folding her paws under her for comfort. Emotionally....and Physically. This story was bringing back so many memories, and she feared for a moment that she might be overwhelmed with nostalgia.

However her experience, and cool head prevailed in the effort to staunch the rise of those feelings within her. She had learned the lessons meant for her, now it was time for the aged cat to pass these timeless lessons onto the kits in front of her. In fact she never would be happy with her time as an elder if she did not offer this one simple benefit to RiverClan. Time had seemed to slow as she was lost in the past, yet she hoped it proved an opportunity for the kits to throw in their two cents.

(Thank you for being patient I had not forgotten about this thread, but it requires a lot of research and attention to detail since I'm actually pulling from cannon lore. Not to mention I have to weave Amberbright into the history in a way that doesn't rewrite it. I love the challenge, but it is daunting at times so I have to wait for days where I feel good enough to write such a detailed post. Anything less and I would feel like I did a disservice to my character and yours.

Webkit stayed silent. He did not want to jeopardise his chance of a story, although the elder seemed to be ignoring his rude tones, he wasn't going to push her too far. He shifted around to make himself more comfy.

With the brief intermission Webkit's spotted form seemed to be staring intently at her, while his friendly white counterpart squeaked with glee appearing to rock back and forth. Even as absorbed as she was in the telling of her own story could not stifle a soft purr. They were both so young and captivated, yet at the same time carefree. Youth really was a treat that all life got to experience at least once, and Amberbright loved basking in it. It made her own aching bones feel young again. As quickly as a slight grin had appeared on her content face, it disappeared as she focused on picking up the story again. "Buckthorn was always suggesting things to Otterstar, never afraid to step up to the plate or voice his opinion. That is a trait many cats value, especially when leading. Being in an important position of power often causes others to not tell you the truth."

The elder lowered her muzzle thoughtfully to her paws, deciding how best to demonstrate this idea to the pair of kits. Then she raised her gray paw pad and pointed it towards Cloudkit "If Webkit looked very tired, so tired he could barely stand, would you take moss to the elders den for him even if his mom asked him to do it?" Her question was pointed and weighed down by purpose. Even if the she-kit did not answer as anticipated Amberbright was sure she could demonstrate the effects of secondhand information via this display. She guessed though that within the little white impressionable furball there was as much kindness as energy, and if her wisdom held true then no alteration of the example would be needed.

With experience came the wisdom to potentially divine such situations, for she had met and dealt with many cats. Amberbright was accustomed to navigating social interactions to make her point among more than just kits. Even thinking that the aged calico was very aware she had been surprised before. With inner mirth filling her heart she reflected, Heck I've surprised myself. I never would have guessed I would take Wavecatchers place and provide the service of knowledge to my clan. Irony was a funny thing, she had never much thought of anything outside of immediate consequences in her youth. She supposed it was often a biproduct of age, most of the time anyway.

Amberbright listened intently for Cloudkits reply, the gears behind her deep blue eyes were turning as she stopped to consider the question. A huff escaped her darker colored friend sitting next to her clearly taking offense to any notion that he might ever need help. The old warrior suppressed a laugh, thinking of the many difficult patrols after battles in the midst of leafbare that she had been apart of. He will understand one day, he's just too young now. Scarcely had she finished her thoughts when Cloudkit answered her query with a decisive yes.

As Amberbright responded her voice was filled with praise and admiration. "That is a noble decision, and no cat could ask for a better friend than you. To look out for one another is what clan life is all about, a trait every mother would be proud of." Her delighted warm face softened back to a thoughtful gaze, and she looked over towards the nursery. "However now in an effort to help your friend, Webkit's mother thinks he completed the task and he is praised for it while you get no credit. As a result Webkit is the one being asked in the future to handle any tasks that she needs help with." Her amber eyes looked back up at the kits, they were set like jewels in their sockets and narrowing from concentration.

"Even the best intentions, and things done for the good of another can muddle the truth. Each little bit of misinformation takes its toll on the ability of a leader to make sound decisions. With the wrong knowledge they might send someone with a short temper to negotiate a peace between two clans. Being able to make the right judgments is everything for anyone who wants to be blessed with the name Star." Amberbright brought her small tail up from the den floor, not even really noticing her unconscious movement as she brought her mind back to the original tale. "So it was that Otterstar and others saw promising potential in Buckthorn. He was driven, straightforward and young."

Both kits were fully engaged as the wiry wily elder proposed her example, at least on the surface they seemed to be grasping at and working out its meaning. In the midst of that momentary quiet the old cats own amber gaze flickered over the pair picking up the unguarded emotions of the youths. Aside from intrigue there appeared to be a distance behind Webkits brown gaze, she felt as if he was looking through her. Perhaps to a future neither could see. Cloudkits own blue eyes were locked with curious intensity. Amberbright felt a ripple of shame as the lively she-kit asked about a peaceful future for the clan. I wish you knew nothing but peace little one. She mused sincerely, refraining from speaking those thoughts aloud yet. Not sure how she wished to respond.

The events of the last few moons rattled through her head, the body of Slatewhisker and others still fresh on her mind. The visible threat of rogues outside the camp and the dangers of a possible coup from within filled every shadowy corner of her imagination. Cloudkit must have seen some of the dead recently even as young as she was, though she might not understand the significance of it just yet. Her answer was measured as she attempted to be honest with the kits without worrying them unnecessarily. After all the last thing she wanted was a disgruntled queen coming into the elders den for a very uncomfortable conversation.

"Peace is something that is very tough to obtain, for either ourselves individually, or our clan. If we want it to last for any great length of time we need to remember to be respectful to other cats situations by addressing them without making ourselves look weaker in the process." Her orange hued eyes rolled down and to the left as if digging out a nugget of wisdom buried behind the sockets. "If we are healthy and well fed we must offer our strength to the weak so that we become an ally, not a target for a desperate clan. If we are hungry and weak we must pretend to be strong using trusted friends to lift us out of catastrophe." Amberbright let out a small sigh, "Sometimes you will give it your all and still things will not go the way we want them. The most you can do is work hard for your clan and keep that desire for peace in your heart."

As she finished speaking her eyes returned again to Webkits spotted fur. Due to her experienced intuitive nature, the she-cat felt the bubbling energy of ambition hiding in his small form. To what end that ambition might lend itself Amberbright knew that as of yet neither cat could tell. It's that same look Slatestripe gave me, still gives me. I hope he is guided well, RiverClan needs that ambition. Her tail swayed behind her moving back and forth like her mind moving from thought to thought. Slatestripe would make a good mentor for him, perhaps I will suggest it to Pikestar.

She considered that perhaps her son would be able to temper the small tom, ironing out any concerns she might have. Both her thoughts and the conversation had taken a heavy turn. Amberbright wondered if she was getting too far afield from the story she had been telling. Though she did not regret the lessons she was trying to teach the kits, the elder hoped they weren't disappointed by her sudden departure from the tale they had come to hear. Your being too hard on yourself, they are kits, you can get back to the story anytime.

Seeing the youngsters pondering her words, Amberbright took the time to settle back down. She let her previous worries fade and folded her paws so that they were overlapping one another. Once she was satisfied with her new position the elderly calico picked up where she left off. "So....Many cats were beginning to place their trust in Bucknight, my mentor Wavecatcher was not among them." The she cat remembered her brown furred, golden eyed teachers patented look of concern that always seemed to stiffen into stone at the first signs of trouble. He had told her then to stay away from Bucknight, though the apprentice of 8 moons could not understand why at the time.

"I know now that Wavecatcher was worried because Bucknight seemed to be making lots of friends around the camp. Friends would later support him in his attempts to rake control of the forest." Amberbright felt a sliver of guilt rise in her stomach as she remembered how she had brushed off her mentors misgivings. Why would anyone want to start trouble? Especially not one of her own clanmates. She had thought him paranoid. Irritation prickled her calico form as she inwardly chided herself for having been so foolish. I should have listened. The old cat tried to set her feelings aside, worried they would distract her from the story.

Her voice remained even, yet Amberbright did let some tension affect her words as she spoke the next line. "One morning suddenly Bucknight came back to us with several other cats who claimed Otterstar had been killed by a fox." The she cat tilted her tri colored head with her amber eyes narrowed theatrically and suspiciously. "It was all so sudden, and for the first time I could see that Wavecatcher had reason to be worried." Her memories echoed her distant feelings, separated by an ocean of time. The gnawing anxiety, and her uncertainty about her clans future had kept her lying awake in the apprentices den for more nights than shed like to admit.

She suddenly became curious, "What would you kits have done, if you suspected a clanmate was doing bad things?"

She could just make out the short haired soft figure of Lilacbreeze, who seemed to be searching for something. The calico elder got up and gave her old bones a thorough stretch, before padding over to meet her. I wonder why she is here? "It was all so sudden, and for the first time I could see that Wavecatcher had reason to be worried." Her memories echoed her distant feelings, separated by an ocean of time. The gnawing anxiety, and her uncertainty about her clans future had kept her lying awake in the apprentices den for more nights than shed like to admit.

She suddenly became curious, "What would you kits have done, if you suspected a clanmate was doing bad things?" ~SilverShine~

"I would rip their pelt off!" Webkit mewed instantly. He unsheathed his claws and battered at a strip of moss.

Slatestripe slowly padded toward the elders’ den. It was very late, so he was rather unsure if his mother would even be awake. He was torn between whether he wanted her to be or not. On one paw, if she were awake, perhaps she could calm his racing thoughts as she always seemed to. On the other, if she was asleep that meant she was taking good care of herself.

He hesitated at the entrance to the den for what was likely only a few moments, but felt like eons. Finally, he peered inside. The den was well-lit by the rays of moonlight streaming down through the branches high above. He thought he could make the shape of his mother out among the other elders. “Mom?” he called softly. Slatestripe hoped he wouldn’t wake the others. Cranky elders was not what he wanted to deal with.

Amberbright
96 Moons

Amberbright lay quietly, sleeplessly, in the old nest of her former companion. She had been unable to rest but she was finding comfort in her denmates familiar scent. It was still not yet stale, and a gentle reminder that their was hope for the only other elder in RiverClan to still be found alive. Just as her calico fur began to rise and fall with the subtle hints of approaching sleep she heard paw pads grazing the earth. Her ears perked up, and her amber eyes widened in the darkness beaming like searchlights in the darkened den. Mom? The easily recognizable voice of her son broke the silence. Feelings of relief and disappointment swept over the elder who attempted to move off her fixation on the missing Smallmouse.

As the old gray black cat lifted her head to see the soothing form of Slatestripe standing just inside the entrance, she called out to him. "I'm here Slate. Come on in it's empty right now." Amberbright gave her fur several licks, noticing it looked frazzled and haggard from her nerves. It wasn't only Smallmouse that had been worrying her. The fact that Slatestripe had been passed over for deputy weighed heavy on her mind, as she understood that it might be even more difficult for her ambitious progeny to contend with. He had not visited for some time since the event, and not seeing him around camp did little to settle her feelings.

She was simply glad that he was before him now. The loneliness provided by an empty den in the cold months of leafbare were proving to be hard on her, but she could be grateful for this moment at least. Even before her son fully made his way over to her she ran up and gave his torn ear a quick affectionate lick."Where have you been off to? I hope you and Rainglow haven't gotten yourselves into any trouble latley?" She could barely hide her concern as she passed her eyes over his grey stripped pelt looking for any hair or whisker out of place.

Slatestripe felt rather guilty that he hadn’t made an effort to come speak with his mother immediately upon recovering from his illness. But, at the time, other things had seemed more pressing. Not that he wanted to imply to anyone that his warrior duties mattered more than his mom, but, well…

He shook his head. He didn’t have to choose between his warrior duties and his mother. Both were equally as important, it was just that his warrior duties caught his attention before speaking to his mom did. That was it. It wasn’t any deeper than that.

He nuzzled her in greeting. A look of concern crossed over his face; she seemed rather frazzled, as if she hadn’t been well lately. His mother was normally very well-kept. “Is anything wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” His reason for visiting was momentarily forgotten in light of the frightening possibility that Amberbright was anything but healthy as could be.

Amberbright
96 Moons

As Amberbright pressed for an answer to her sons whereabouts he shook his head in response to her question. She wondered whether he was being deliberately vague, or if he simply did not feel like going over the mundane details of what had kept him away. As Slatestripe gave her a nuzzle she leaned in, simply happy to set her amber eyes upon her kin's form. It was in that brief moment of contact that she could smell the stale stench of sickness which clung weakly to his black fur. The elder had smelled illness many times before, the older cats in her den being no stranger to various breakouts of such diseases. As she lifted her head back to inquire after his health Slate launched his own question even quicker.

Caught off guard and with her mouth hanging open Amberbright answered in a bumbling but truthful fashion. "Oh-oh, wellll... I haven't been sleeping too well since Smallmouse disappeared. It's no big deal really, it's just that.. It's a little colder and emptier than I'm used to thats all." The words emptied from her throat at times sounding reassuring, yet at others petering out into meek nothingness. Realizing how unsatisfying her initial answer might seem, the calico perked her ears back up adding "I'm fine really. Better even now that you're back. She gave his cheek a confident lick, and tried to quickly change the subject. "Did you need to talk to me about something? I can tell you haven't been feeling well lately. Is everything ok?

As much as she did enjoy simply shooting the breeze with her son, he would not normally choose such a late hour to sit and chat. She felt he was here because it was of a matter of importance to him. Her stomach tightened a little with apprehension, but the graying she-cat did not let the feeling overtake her. Some far off instinct somewhere told her whatever problem it was, it was not immediate. Slatestripe hadn't exactly come running, or even raised his voice as he searched for her in the den. Following the anxiety was a wave of pride which she felt every time her progeny confided in her. For all my faults, I must be doing something right if he keeps coming to talk with me. Being a mother was one thing Ambernright could never regret.

Her ears twitched as another set of paws padded from the darkness carrying a large vole. Rainfur loosed it from her teeth to speak. The elder dipped her head before speaking "Thank you Rainfur, your too kind, this will help warm me up immensly." Her mouth watered a little at the sight of the creature, but she abstained for the moment focused on the conversations happening in front of her. The lack of sleep also was doing her stomach no favors, which at the moment was a bit upset if a little hungry.

Slatestripe was relieved that it was only loneliness that seemed to be weighing his mother down. That, and a feeling of longing for a friend she’d lost. He wasn’t sure if he should volunteer to go look for Smallmouse or not; it wasn’t terribly uncommon for elders to disappear, given their vulnerability and tendency to wander where they shouldn’t. The dark warrior didn’t want to say it, but he felt it was unlikely the elder would be found alive.

Slatestripe remembered something an elder had told him when he was an apprentice, when he inquired about why the oldest cat in RiverClan had one day gotten out of his nest and just… left. Slatestripe saw him leave from the apprentices’ den; when he called out to him, the elder had not answered.

The other elder had told him that elderly cats often had a knack for being able to tell when their time was up. If they didn’t have any cats they were close to, or if they simply preferred not to have a fuss over their deaths, they’d retreat deep into the woods to die peacefully. Sure enough, two days later a patrol found that elder, curled up peacefully in a hollow log.

Perhaps Smallmouse had left to do the same. Slatestripe wasn’t aware of any family the elder may have had, and it seemed his only friend had been Amberbright. He didn’t voice any of this, though, not wanting to disturb or frighten his mother. Not that he felt she couldn’t handle it; it was just that she was frazzled enough.

At her inquiry as to his reason for visiting yet again at a late hour, he hesitated. Would she find him foolish for worrying about this? His area of concern was one that he felt came naturally to most cats. Was he flawed because it didn’t feel easy or natural for him?

He cleared his throat. “Yes. My reason for being here. I figure you must know Mintpaw. I’ve mentioned her to you before. The apprentice who presented me with that special stone when she was a kit. I’ve been spending a lot of time with her as of recent, sometimes just hanging out and sometimes helping her with her training. Throughout that, I’ve found that I’ve started… to see her like a daughter of mine. That freaks me out. It’s a lot more responsibility than being a mentor. I feel like I owe her so much. If I screw up, there’s so much riding on it…” He trailed off.

The golden tabby looked over with her good eye to see a little black and orange kit, and she smiled. "Well, hello there, dear! What's your name?" She listened quite carefully as the adorable little creature spoke. Letting out a rusty laugh at the question of a story, Ranch Dressing nodded. "Why, of course, my dear! Hm, hm. What to tell you, what to tell you! I went on many an adventure as a youngin', and my brother went on many more. There was one time, when we were back with our old housefolk, that we went on a big boat." She spoke of the boat before realising the child probably doesn't know what a boat even is.

"A boat is a big nest, kind of, for some Upwalkers. They put it out on the water and use it to fish too! My housefolk would give me and my brother some of the fish they'd catch with their sticks."

But now, she could hear the faint arguments of the keepers and warriors over the meeting. "Well, if anything or Anyone is troubling you. You're always welcome into the Elder's den. I know I'm not right to be letting everyone have free passes into others' personal space. So try to stick to the entrance or my nest."

When Honeykit entered the den, she noticed how cheerful they were. "Why hello Honeykit, I'm Cloudpelt. " She introduced herself. A small smile reached across her face.

"Hello, Cloudpelt!" Honeykit looked at Cloudkit "see? I told you I had a name similar to yours!", she wagged her tail "Where were you? I was playing cat and mouse with Beekit and Ravenkit a while ago, I caught both of them!" she paused "what's wrong with you?"
Cloudkit was looking at his paws. he didn't really like playing with the other kits "Oh, nothing's wrong with me, Honeykit"

Poking her head in the den, the small ragdoll peered into the elder's den, scoping out the scene before padding forward with a friendly smile on her face. There were quite a few elders, five that she counted from where she was, and she wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable. Holding a bundle of feathers she had been collecting since the beginning of her apprenticeship, Birdpaw felt the need to share some. Definitely because she wanted to be a good cat (which she did) and not because it was causing an uncomfortable lump in her nest.

Maybe it could be both.

Dropping the bundle of multi-colored feathers, she waved her plumy tail in greeting. "Hi everyone! I was just checking in and seeing if anyone wants some nice feathers for their nests? There's plenty here, so just holler and I can bring you some!" She avoided claiming the feathers as her own that she had gathered, but also avoided lying and saying someone else brought them in. She wasn't going to lie, but she wasn't going to hog any recognition, because she didn't deserve any.

fluffy brown and white tom with amber eyes.

After sharing his words to the lazy-asses sitting in the clearing, Ferretsnap pushed his way into the elder's den. He looked around, tail flicking as he expected to see the elders of the Clan sitting in the den. Not that he'd mind if they were in there, as long as they didn't get on his nerves. Regardless, he was here to clean the nests so the elders wouldn't need to sleep on stale bedding. It must be quite uncomfortable for them.

Clearing his throat, he made his presence known before beginning to work, remaining silent. If they wished to talk to him, they could, but he was simply here to clean- he wouldn't bother them with pointless conversation unless they spoke to him first.

The small ragdoll was glad to hear an elder call for some feathers. It was someone she wasn't familiar with- must have joined after she fell into the river for a few moons- but still seemed like a wonderful cat! She wondered if this cat knew her dad, Pikestar- or was it Snowleap now?

Didn't matter. He was still Dad.

"I've got plenty!" She chirped, carrying her feathers over to the elder's nest. "I don't believe we've met, I'm Birdpaw." She decided to introduce herself before getting to work, looking down at the nest. Noticing it was a little... flat looking, she turned to hurry off to grab some extra moss, but was delighted to see Ferretsnap enter the den with moss.

"You're a mind-reader, Ferretsnap." She smiled softly, as the warrior silently got to work. Not knowing him as much of a conversationalist, she didn't want to make him uncomfortable. But once he got finished with her elder's nest, the apprentice would place the feathers down, lining the edges and scattered them on the bottom.

Noticing that the tom had the same milky look in his eyes that her friend Wormbite did, she decided to try and explain to him what was going on, since Ferretsnap hadn't said anything and she didn't want the elder to be confused about anything. "Ferretsnap just brought you some nice, new moss for your nest, mister! Do you want to try it out?"

“Juniperkit! Wait up!” She called after her.
She then took a running leap and narrowly avoided a collision. Then just as planned, Minnowkit waited with Juniperkit for a possible story.

Ranch Dressing had a long and interesting life, this she knew. She was happy to have found a place, at the end of her years, to call home. She'd just had a lovely meal of vole and settled down to sleep. The heat of the early morning lulled her to sleep quickly, and her eyes shut gently. Soon, her breathing slowed.. and then stopped.
