Let's face it. The Novellas have gone downhill. The first one I ever read was Leafpool's Wish, and I found it to be enjoyable, and it offered some 'out of book' background to explain some stuff that had happened.
then... Spottedleaf's Heart rolled into the scene in all of its dumpster fire glory. I haven't read the novella personally, so I can not offer any reasonable review of it, but I'm going to say what pretty much everyone in the Warriors Community agrees on.
It's trash. It's a horrible book and it justifies things that are uncomfortable and not okay. Bright Guardian Akira and several Youtubers have gone into detail about this book, so you can watch their videos for more in-depth details.
Well, I put that disaster behind me when I found out the guy who died in the first chapter of the first book was getting a novella- Redtail. I ADORE fanon Redtail. The selfless, loving dad of Sandstorm. The loving hubby of Runningwind, all of the personality that the fans have given the tortie boy. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I ordered the book with his novella in it. Was it going to be with him alive, or him watching from Starclan? I didn't know, but I went in with my hopes high.
I will spoil things, so I'll leave that part able to be skipped.
My hopes were crushed. We meet Redtail as little Redpaw, hopeful and a quirky little cat. He's.. lovable. Nothing really note-worthy. Then, he has a bit of anxiety over being a part of a battle. To me, that shows he was ready to search for other solutions, which I found to be.. likable. He reminded me a lot of young Firestar. Then, a hawk nearly gets him, which TIGERCLAW saves him. Thankful, Redpaw says 'thanks buddy, really owe you one there' *not actual quote*. To which Tigerclaw predicts the future and says 'you owe me your life!'- being WAY to cheerful and creepy. We then see Red as a brand new warrior.. sucking up to Tigerclaw. He wants the tabby to like him, and so he.. follows his every word. They go hunting, and Tigerclaw has Redtail BEAT UP A APPRENTICE. And Redtail LISTENS, despite feeling horrible about it (He later apologizes to the apprentice's mentor and seeks to make it right, which I actually found admirable about him). Then, he feels as if Tigerclaw would be mad at him if he said anything. Its.. bad vibes all around.
Okay, end of Spoilers. Basically, they made Redtail and Tigerclaw have a bully/ bullied relationship where the younger cat feels as if he owes the bully everything. To me, being bullied myself when younger, that was not an enjoyable book to read. The book had a lot of contradictions to Warrior canon, and it seemed really... out of place. I would have found a small novella about Redtail being a young cat in Starclan, feeling as if he had a 'debt' to pay to his clan or even him watching as Fireheart figured out his death to be more enjoyable. The only two novellas I enjoyed out of the three in the book were Tawnypelt's and Shadowstar's. Tawnypelt's was entirely in character, and Shadowstar's offered more lore and insight.
Your opinions? Is it just me that's upset about the newer novellas?
