when darkness falls, they emerge. the nightwalkers climb from their darkened caves, two creatures united by their way of life. they hunt in the night, and hide by day. only those who are nocturnal have been able to spot them within their journey. with piercing eyes that will strike your very soul, the nightwalkers will not take anything lightheartedly. they are hunters. they are murderers.
they are wolves.
one of them, a burly male with deep grey fur, was treading alongside his companion when an owl swooped above them. it cawed loudly, a loud hoo echoing in their ears. he dropped into a crouch and growled protectively, not wanting his friend to become hurt. his tail lashed with a quiet rustle of fur, dark green eyes narrowing to slits. the wolf's name— achilles. his ears pivoted to lay flat against his head before he leapt into the air, snapping at the bird.
it screeched a bloodcurdling scream as it escaped his grasp, flying away in fear. achilles fell onto his paws and shook out his fur triumphantly.
"i'll never get old of that," he barked to his companion, eyes bright. his tail now lashed with a sense of victory that he had chased away that blasted owl. it had been terrorizing them for many nights, and now it was finally gone. achilles yipped and padded forwards once again.

The other, a smaller sized feral, padded beside the dark wolf, his own ears swivelling and alert; just like his eyes. His golden-amber orbs surveying the scenery, he glanced towards his conpanion, before straight ahead. The deafening screech startled him, his ears pinned against his head and he crouched down quickly to prevent the bird from hitting his head. His hackles risen, he watched in surprise at Achilles’ surprising speed. The smaller wolf’s pale grey pelt shone under the light of the moon as he glanced down at the dead owl, expecting to see it twitch. But there was no movement; the bird lay as still as the chilly air that surrounded the two wolves. The owl’s neck was cleanly snapped; a successful kill that Achilles’ would be proud of. The grey wolf, who went by the name of Altair, glanced at the larger wolf in amusement. “Maybe not, but the birds are gettin’ pretty tired of it.” Altair joked lightly, his silvery tail swishing back and worth as he walked, though the fur along his back still stood up, being still a bit surprised by the incident with the owl.

achilles chuckled and swiped blood from his maw. "they should have learned by now," he said bluntly. his eyes narrowed once again as he looked around, head raised confidently. the alpha male lashed his tail as he stood a protective ground over altair, knowing the smaller wolf did not react well to surprise encounters. if he were to do anything in life, it would be to keep altair safe from all harm.
his paws left prints along the muddy ground, signalling that they had reached the river. achilles huffed and quickened his pace, moving closer to it. "come on, or we're going to miss the falling stars!" he broke into a run, although he stayed certain that altair was following behind him. it was too dangerous to be alone at night.

”They’re birds, Achilles.” The pale wolf said with a laugh. “They don’t know the difference between a hare and a lizard,” Altair joked. It didn’t annoy him much when Achilles got all protective, but he couldn’t deny that it was slightly embarrassing when they ran into other wolves. He could take care of himself, of course, though he wasn’t the best when it came to surprise encounters; his reflexes were a little slow in comparison to his burly friend. Altair glanced down at his paws as he walked, feeling the wet hm earth beneath his pads as shey grew closer to a water source. He nearly missed Achilles’ remark about the stars, but once he saw the dark wolf break into a sprint, he chased after. Altair was no where close to running Achilles’ speed- it wasn’t that he was slow, the grey wolf just had shorter limbs. For every step Achilles took, Altair took two.

achilles laughed and nudged altair. "that is true, my friend." he moved to lay on his side, staring up towards the sky. a smile seemed to curl onto his muzzle, a rare sight to see after an encounter with an enemy. every year, they would watch the stars lose their place in the sky, falling towards the ground as if they were leaves during autumn. waiting for altair,
achilles groomed his pelt and sniffed as cold, muddy water seeped into his pelt. the dark wolf's tail curled around his large body, though he allowed room for his companion to cuddle into his side.
they always did this. many passerby had begun to think that the two wolves were a couple, however they were friends. really, really close friends. even achilles had had thoughts about the way they treat each other. but the wolves were merely best friends that would risk their lives for each other. what does it matter if achilles's heart beat faster while they cuddled during the night? or if he felt a surge of protectiveness every time another wolf came a tail-length too close to altair? they were friends.
only friends.

Breathing heavily, Altair wonderful padded over to his friend, a sheepish smile on his maw, not having run that fast in a bit. The pale wolf padded over and laid down by his side, leaning into Achilles’ warmth. He stared up at the sky, his golden-amber eyes reflecting the shining suns. Altair sat like this for a bit longer, not taking his eyes off of the stars, folding his paws beneath his chest, providing warmth for the other wolf but also taking Achilles’ own heat. He sat his muzzle down between his paws and wrapped his fluffy tail around his small build. “The winter solstice is coming soon,” he said simply, thinking to himself. “It’s going to get cold soon.”
This was an example of Altair’s conversational side; to get them started he’d simply state facts, then hear his companion’s opinion on them. It was a simple yet useful tactic that the grey wolf kept with him at all times, simply because he didn’t have very many fantastical stories to tell anyone.

the wolf turned his gaze to altair. "then i'm glad my winter coat has begun to grow. but we'll need to find a tunnel to shelter in, though. since we aren't like some other animals, who hibernate during the cold days of winter." achilles leaned over and swiped a tongue across the smaller wolf's ear, nuzzling his cheek.
"this winter will be the hardest one to get through. the humans have taken most of the food around here, and the temperatures will drop lower than the past years. we'll have to fight to survive, especially with the diseases that have been passed around lately."
he sighed and rested his head on altair's, looking towards the sky as the first star began to fall. his heart beat fast, blood pounding in his ears. achilles hoped altair wouldn't sense the heat rising within his pelt, ears flattening with worry.
what was wrong with him?

The silver wolf nodded in understanding, laying his head back down. “We ought to start looking for tunnels or dens soon; they might all be occupied by hibernating animals.” He said considerately. Altair sighed quietly, closing his eyes but still fully awake. “We’ll make it through the winter; we always do,” he reminded. “We’ve handled humans and predators and the elements and came through victorious each time; I’m sure this winter will hardly be different. We may just need to prepare more, that’s all.” Altair mumbled optimistically. He felt the warmth rising in Achilles’ pelt, though hardly thought anything of it. His larger friend had always had a higher body temperature than he, and it felt rather nice in the cold winter air. Altair let out a yaws, ears pinned back as he did so, settling his head back down on his paws, before slowly drifting off.

as the silver wolf slept, achilles admired his features. they had been friends ever since they were pups, sticking together even as their families had been slaughtered by the pink-skinned creatures within the night. the two had snuck out during that time, coming back just as they heard the yowls of terror from achilles's younger brother. both achilles and altair ran in fear of being killed just as their families had been, and achilles had made a promise to himself to protect altair at all costs. that promise had withheld even as they grew into full-grow wolves, never leaving eachother's sides.
achilles's heart beat steadily, albeit faster than normal. his pelt rustled in a thin breeze before he leaned over and began to groom the smaller wolf's soft pelt, smiling to himself. yes, in the back of his mind, he knew what was wrong with him. it was obvious, with how he had been acting recently, no matter how much he denied it. achilles was slowly falling in love with his best, and only, friend. but he would never say that, of course, because he didn't want to ruin their friendship. even as the word of 'friend' sent a pang to his heart, and the sight of altair laughing caused a flutter in his chest, achilles would always allow the feelings to eat away at his mind if it meant he would stay with altair forever.

Slow rising breaths came from the pale wolf, his chest rising and falling as he peacefully slept. He twitched ever so slightly, shifting a bit to become more comfortable. Altair yawned once more, his jaws parting widely before setting his muzzle atop his paws. The small male wolf had dreamt several times of his family’s untimely deaths, often so that he lost sleep due to the nightmares that kept him from sleeping. But tonight he fell asleep with the stars shining above him, and that comforted Altair in a way. Seeing the stars made him think that his family was looking down upon him from their starry residence, assuring him that everything was okay. And it was because of this that Altair held an undying faith towards the stars, believing each one was an ancestor. Deep down he knew that this was likely untrue, but it gave him something to hang on to, and without this belief he doubted he could’ve made it this far. If not for Achilles being by his side day by day; he would not have made it this far. He would have been killed with his family by the cruel, hateful beings without fur.

as altair moved, achilles froze. what would the other think if he found his best friend staring at him with a look of pure, unfiltered love? he would certainly leave as soon as he realized the true meaning of the gaze. sighing in relief, achilles went back to grooming the silver fur of his friend once he settled to a stillness. his eyes closed and he breathed the scent that was unmistakeably altair, soon relaxing enough to slip into a deep sleep.
all worries washed away as he fell unconscious, finally gaining the rest he needed. the warmth of altair seeped into his pelt, a sense of security washing over him while he curled around the smaller wolf. his ears flicked, giving any creature that was awake the hint that he was dreaming. what was he dreaming, those creatures may ask. well, achilles was undoubtedly dreaming of a future that held no fears of losing the other, no fears of his love ruining everything.
oh, how he wished that future could be real.
