Rewriting the Stars - A MothPool Fanfic

A piece I wrote a long time ago, and finally decided to share. Takes place in The New Prophecy, a few moons after the Great Journey.

Mothwing sighed as she looked up at the moon. She wanted to fall asleep, it was the middle of the night, but she couldn't. She had too many thought keeping her awake, but one in particular... Leafpool.

The cat who made her feel so insecure, yet so safe. So... Desperate to prove herself. She wanted the ThunderClan medicine cat's approval. She felt... Strange around her, but she couldn't quite place a paw on how. At least, she couldn't until recently, when she realized she was in love.

What was she thinking?

They were medicine cats, Mothwing couldn't love her! And Leafpool didn't feel the same way about her, she was sure of it. A tear slipped from her eye. Why couldn't life be easy? Why couldn't she just tell Leafpool she loved her, and the ThunderClan cat would say she felt the same? Why was there a rule against having a mate? Why did they make life so complicated?

Mothwing slipped out of her den, and into the clearing, the moonlight illuminating her golden fur. She continued to walk, out of camp, and to the Moonpool.

While the Moonpool held none of her beliefs, it was still a place of comfort and safety. A place she could be alone, since it was rare to find other cats. A place she could be herself.

She padded up the path that led to the starlit pool, her paws slipping into the pawprints that were set in the stone. However she did not expect Leafpool to be there.

"Leafpool?" she mewed in astonishment.

"Mothwing," she tabby greeted as Mothwing lay awkwardly down next to her.

"I, uh- What are you doing here?" Mothwing mewed, trying to break the awkwardness.

Leafpool sighed, and rested her head across the slightly larger she-cats shoulder. "Oh, Mothwing," she sobbed, and the golden molly could feel her tears wetting her pelt.

"Hey, hey, it's okay," she soothed, rasping comforting licks between her ears. "You can talk to me."

The lighter brown tabby sniffled. "It's just... I've been thinking about you, Mothwing." The RiverClan cat quirked a brow. "I... I miss you, Mothwing. I feel like we never get to see each other any more."

By now, Mothwing was crying too, her face buried in Leafpool's fur. "I love you," she blurted, and tensed, expecting the worst.

Mothwing was too scared to look Leafpool in the eye and see her reaction. "I know I shouldn't, but I love you too," she admitted.

Mothwing couldn't believe it. Leafpool loved her. "But we can't be together."

"Y-yes we can!" Mothwing protested through sobs. "We can leave! We can be together! Please, Leafpool... I love you..."

Leafpool shook her head. "No... This isn't the destiny StarClan laid out for us."

"But StarClan doesn't choose our destiny, Leafpool!" Mothwing exclaimed. "We choose it. We choose our paths, and I choose you over RiverClan. Please, Leafpool, don't you love me?"

Leafpool nuzzled her mate. "Of course I do," she said gently. "But I can't leave my Clan."

"Please," Mothwing choked out desperately, seeing as Leafpool was standing up to go. "Please! Nothing stands between us but you. If you just leave-"

"No," Leafpool repeated. "I- I can't! What about my Clan, my friends, my family?"

"You'll have me," Mothwing replied, her voice hoarse. "Isn't that enough?"

Leafpool didn't know what to say. "I'm sorry," she repeated. "But everything stands between us, Mothwing. Everything. I'm sorry."

She rasped her tongue affectionately over Mothwing's ear. "I'll see you soon." And she walked out, seeing as the sun would rise soon and she didn't want anybody to notice she left.

Mothwing continued to sob, as her friend left. Why? Why me?
